Stayed here for a business trip, never been to Harwich before and wasn’t sure what to expect! Brilliant welcome by the friendly bar staff , clean room , good choice of food and an overall good environment! The chap who runs the place helped me with some questions I had about the area and was a very accommodating young man. Would recommend to anyone needing it for business use or personal use. You won’t regret it. Very good value for money, will stay here again most definitely. 5 stars!

Prima pijs- kwaliteit

Het ontbijt is karig en bestaat voor uit voor verpakte producten. Klacht over douche was niet te doen omdat manager smorgens niet aanwezig was. Niet voor herhaling vatbaar!!

I used to drink in what was then known as "The Garland" as a teenager. A lot of water has flown under umpteen bridges since then and not having been in it for more years than I care to remember, I thought I'd take the other half in there for a drink to show her where it all began. We only stayed for one drink - and that was one too many. Locals surrounded the bar and seemed not terribly keen on creating space in order to get a drink; the place was full of kids including one that was riding up and down on a scooter. The noise levels were horrendous because of the children and it clearly wasn't the place to go for a quiet drink. Add to that the oppressive gun metal grey decor and it isn't excetly a calming atmosphere. Some people might quite like that but I won't be going again. In fairness, I've been told the rooms have been refurbished and people I've spoken to in the area say they have heard the rooms are quite nice, but I can't vouch for this as I didn't stay there.

Visited here for lunch and was very surprised at how good the food was. As others have mentioned, you can watch the chef cook your meal if you like, or sit in the garden to eat, which is what we did as it was a lovely day. Everyone that I was with complemented the food, and nobody found it too spicy. The naan breads were particularly good, and not like the bought in ones that you usually get in most restaurants. The price of the meal was good value for money, and I will return.

Wow!Were the Laila Grill in some fashionable corner of London - or even Colchester(!) it would be getting rave reviews in fashionable publications. It is thoroughly authentic, and very high quality and is worth travelling many miles for. The dishes are so full of flavour and while it is true that some have a bit of zip to them, none are overly hot. It is perhaps too authentic from the locality. Customers who are used to a tikka masala in redish, sweet sauce devoid of fresh spices but with a tablespoon of redish oil floating on the top may be a little disappointed.....

Delhi born Head Chef Anirudh Bhandari,is a master blender of these fresh spices/herbs with the main ingredients whether fish ( our favourite) meats or vegetables. Always a thrill to the tastebuds- not insipid "english inspired" indian mush. The price is most reasonable as a bonus! Also Becky our most recent waitress exuded extra happy local friendliness. We’re regular visitors to Parkeston – indeed, not only do I remember the days when the Captain Fryatt was The Garland Hotel, on the day we visited we had been tending the grave of a relative of mine who, I believe, actually knew the real Captain Fryatt. For drinks we’re members of the Railway Club, but it’s always been difficult to get something really good for an evening meal without going to Dovercourt or Harwich – there’s Morrison’s café, the Fish and Chip shop (in Garland Rd.) or The Mayflower (selling standard, rather unimaginative, pub stuff). That’s not the case any more. The Laila Grill at the Captain Fryatt is open lunchtimes and evenings, and, at very reasonable prices, is serving some of the best Indian food you’ll find anywhere (and I say that as a former resident of Bradford, and someone who remembers the Kastoori in Tooting). When working in Leeds, some colleagues from Mumbai used to complain that the food at the local curry houses was too greasy – it was, they said, more Pakistani or Bengali than Indian. I need to tell them of the Laila Grill: the food there is much fresher, much lighter, than that you get in a normal 'Indian' restaurant, and I’m sure they’ll like it.Viv had Palak Kichidi – a vegetarian concoction of rice and vegetables, with spices – and she absolutely loved it. I usually struggle to finish a whole portion of curry, but not here – I had the Amma’s Fish Curry, and it was quite possibly the best curry I have ever tasted. Our drinks totalled two glasses of beer, and two of wine, and one of mineral water: our bill came to only £36.80. For that price we got a meal of a quality for which you’d have to pay double in some areas of London. If there is any justice in the world there will soon be people wending their way from London by train to Harwich International station, and then meandering to Garland Road for a curry – it really is a food experience that should not be missed. We’ll be back.

We did arrive a little late for lunch and there we're only 2 other diners but we were well greeted and made comfortable. We ordered and did have a bit of a wait but was worth it as the food was freshly made and very tasty. Being Asian ourselves we know a good curry from the slosh but Laila exceeded expectations. Fresh, tasty, well flavoured food. We will visit again for dinner and glad we have somewhere which cooks real indian food where we can take family.

To be honest, I don't even know why I paid, the meal was just awful. Although the service was very friendly and adequate, the food itself was unbelievably awful! First, the poppadoms! £1.45 each, and although you get chutney, you don't get onion salad or mint sauce - that's a new one! My partner had a Prawn Korma, and it was like no other korma he'd ever tasted! It was a watery sauce, that tasted purely of butter - nothing else. The Saag Paneer consisted of overcooked spinach, and two small cubes of paneer. The naan was drastically over cooked, almost like charcoal in places. As for the Chicken Tikka Masala, it was possibly the worst dish I've ever had. There was a thin layer of shop bought masala sauce on the plate, with some cremated chicken breast on top! Also, the chef had decided to chuck burnt aubergines, onions, peppers and cloves in - I wasn't sure if I was eating a chicken masala or a bloody stir fry.One thing I found funny, is that the waitress and chef asked 4 times whether the food was okay, it was almost as though they knew it was awful and couldn't believe we weren't dissatisfied! Usually I'd complain, but I couldn't be bothered! This place isn't cheap, and certainly isn't what you'd get at most Indian restaurants up and down the country! Grab some quality food, McDonalds isn't too far away! Avoid, avoid, avoid!

I am in 2 minds when writing this review. Firstly what a place! Great little restaurant, really authentic interior with the benches and decorations. Open kitchen which in a Curry house is quite rare showing they have nothing to hide. Food all freshly prepared and none of this cubed dry chicken thrown into preheated sauce! Service was very good and a bonus in that drinks come straight through from the pub so some pretty fine beers as well. Starters were amazing. Freshly prepared and none of this pre-heated rubbish. Food itself, authentic and very tasty. You could see the attention had gone into preparing each dish individually with care and attention. Now comes to my disappointment. Like someone else has already written the food was simply too spicy. Maybe I am not used to it anymore but I found it difficult to really enjoy because of the heat. Also quite disappointing was the price charged for poppadums. 1.45 each was a bit on the steep side. So would I recommend this place to anyone. Most certainly but with the warning that they need to be aware of the heat level and to maybe go for the onion bagee instead of the poppadums! If they toned down the heat I 'd be there every time I came over on the Ferry.

Authentic Indian - a little gemTucked away in Parkeston (walking distance to Harwich Int Port) the Laila Grill serves "Indian street food" in a bright welcoming setting. The waiting staff are friendly and helpful guiding visitors through the relatively small but varied menu. The Kitchen is open to view and the Chef Aniruda takes great pride and care in preparing delicious fresh dishes which he's only too happy to describe and guide you through. I visited this restaurant on Sat 22 August at about 19.00hrs.The premises is built in a small residential part of Harwich known as Parkeston. From the external the premises looks clean and smart. On entering the Laila Grill, you note a bright clean airy space. The kitchen is open plan which is always a good sign, as you can watch the chef in action. The style of the restaurant is laid out in Indian dhabas which are informal canteens for people from all walks of life, a great idea and concept. The wooden benches are well spaced and if you want more intimate they do tables for two with chairs. In addition I noted some couples eating in the garden area as it was such a gorgeous summers evening. The waiting staff were all presentable, well mannered and polite. Service from them was good without them being overbearing. Now for the food !!!. The style of this establishment is Street Food the chef ( Ani) uses a what's known as an Inka Grill, taste the food and you realise why such grills have taken the catering industry by storm. This was a kind of pre meal before a night out so we didn't want anything too heavy We had Chicken Farcha to start a chicken dish served with yogurt and a light salad tasty to say the least. Little did we realise the best was to come, We ordered a Full Tandoori Chicken from the grill some Garlic Nan's along with some rice and sauce. Having been brought up in Southall I can honestly say I've never tasted such amazing food, I could have eaten 10 chickens succulent tasty crispy tender words cant describe the explosion of taste in your mouth. The garlic nans were cooked to perfection along with the rice sauce and fresh salad. Ani the chef was keen to seek feedback when it came to time to leave, a pleasant polite professional chef who was keen to seek feedback is always a plus in my book. The meal along with 4 drinks came to £37.00 fantastic value in my book.I would give this place a 10/10 for quality politeness and value for money.Do yourself a favour and get down to the Laila Grill you wont be dissapointed

The Laila Grille is part of the Captain Fryatt pub although it has its own separate entrance. The decor is fresh and bright and reflects the street cafe atmosphere. The food is not your typical Indian restaurant menu fayre and the menu requires some navigation aided by helpful staff. We opted for pappadums and pickles, beware of the chilli pickle it's hot followed by starters of Malabari Prawns and Chicken Farcha all thoroughly enjoyable. Main courses of Murgh Palak Tat-a-tak and Chicken Malai Tikka with rice and Paratha arrived and was plentiful in quantity and very tasty. The meal was excellent value. First, do not be confused ....this is not pub food. The fact that the restaurant is associated with the pub Captain Fryatt does not make this a 'pub restaurant' (the pub does offer usual pub food such as fish and chips, etc). Laila Grill is an Indian restaurant that offers 6 starters (try the assorted pakoras for 3 pounds, or about $ 4.50 USD), 13 main dishes (fish, lamb, chicken, vegetable), and 7 tandoor dishes (chicken, fish, lamb, veg). A variety of rice and nan are also available. While there we had the assorted pakora (10 pieces), lamb salli (very tender, no fat or grizzle), miloni tarkari (vegetable stew(good but we thought it could have been flavored more), garlic nan (exceptional, light and fluffy and full of flavor). Our bill was 23 pounds with 2 diet cokes ( $ 35 USD). We thought the portion size was adequate for two people. The server was attentive and did frequent check backs. We would eat here again.

The Laila Grill at the back of the Captain Bryant pub should not be confused with other "Indian" restaurants, because it's Indian, not Bengali like 90% of UK Indians. So, you can expect different dishes and a different experience. This was my 4th visit in recent months and I have to say that I am always interested by the fact that the menu doesn't offer me 56 varieties of the same curry, with one different ingredient to mark them out, but actually offers interesting, occasionally slightly bizarre but always tasty varities of street food, snacks and dishes. Do not bother eating here if you normally eat tikka masala and want to try something similar, you're lack of adventure will invariably be disappointed. Do eat here if you are open to trying tastes and flavours that you've not seen before.Tonight, my son and I had chicken roll to start with - that's a curried chicken wrap, shredded chicken, strongly spiced, OK, I had a bit of bone, but it was delicious and I don't mind knowing that they use the whole bird and nor just bland breast meat. I then had Dal Gosht, an excellent dark, mildly spiced lamb stew with a very nice roti. My son had a very good portion of kofta lamb with naan - very tasty and filling. My wife had a hot prawn curry and mushroom rice, the curry had bags of flavour and the rice was a generous portion. Add a pint of ale and four soft drinks and you get a bill for under £40 and a very comfortably full feeling. The staff are attentive and friendly, the kitchen is open to view (I've seen my fair share of restaurant kitchens professionally, this one is immaculate) and the chef even asked me how my meal was. The menu is not as extensive as most Indian restaurants, it doesn't need to be, theres plenty of choice, much to interest you and if you like vegetarian dishes, some very different options. Will this appeal to everyone who eats at their local Indian? No... but if you want to step away from the ordinary, you are bound find something here that's to your fancy.

It was a delight and surprise to find the Layla Indian Restaurant at the rear of the Captain Fryatt in the depths of Parkeston, Essex. Undoubtedly the best Indian cuisine east of The Cafe Spice Namaste. I say Indian cuisine as distinct from the Bangladeshi/Bengali cuisine that is available in abundance in all of our high streets. The menu is quite different and may confuse or dissapoint some people who are only familiar with the previous cuisine. The food is cooked fresh with subtle spices and delivers amazing flavours. The quality of my meat biryani was excellent although possibly lacking in the flavour of massala paste. The decor and ambience of the place isn’t great but the the Layla is about food with the chefs cooking within sight. Highly recommend to try.

It was the second time we ate in this restaurant. We like the Indian feel decoration. The food was very good and good for value. It is the best Indian restaurant in the area. It attaches with the Captain Fryatt pub that offers lagers £1.99 a pint between 12pm and 6pm, all day on Sundays. So we had good value of drinks in the pub and had dinner. Will definitely go there more often.

Thought we would have a change from our lovely MANNINGTREE local Indian , bad mistake . Cheap cuts of chicken in the korma , chicken tikka smelt disgusting we didn't dare eat it as it smelt like the chicken was off . Poor excuse for a naan , looked and tasted like stretched pizza dough . Absolute waste of money and will never return

Went with a friend for an early eve meal. Had the place to ourselves. Incredible tastes and presentation. Gorgeous restaurant. Cannot fault a thing. Delicious starter, portions not so huge that you feel you can never eat again, but still so satisfying! And also, v reasonably prices.Highly recommend, and I'm fussy!

Six of us whilst waiting to board our vessel sought refreshment and relaxation at The Captain Fryatt. The barman was friendly and obliging and the surroundings satisfactory. It was a hot day and the central heating was being tested which made our brief stay similar to staying in a sauna. The front door was eventually opened to ventilate the area. The choice of beers was good and of a good standard. We decided to take advantage of the in house Indian restaurant a decision later to be one taken in poor judgement. One of our group ordered the fish stew and and enjoyed it immensely the five remaining group members felt their meals were totally void of flavour, watery and lacking authenticity. The other main irritation was that of a noisy toddler running amok and polluting adult space. Like many other adults I share the view that children should not be allowed in pubs.

I have enjoyed living in East Anglia since moving out of London many years ago. However, one thing I really miss is good ethnic food. I had all but given-up hope of finding an Indian restaurant anywhere in East Anglia, which served food with anything like the vibrancy of Indian food widely available in Brick Lane or Drummond St. I have followed up recommendations from colleagues and associates, that such and such a restaurant will be different, only to find the same dreary curry slop. Well, the Laila Grill is something very different. Located in a pretty run-down area, near to the International Terminal, the restaurant is at the back of the Captain Fryatt. This place looks promising from the moment you walk in, no flock wall paper, no tables wedged against the wall, this place is airy, brightly coloured and spacious. There is a big TV, with a proper Bollywood film playing. The interior is modern and inviting, whilst still celebrating its Indian roots - I felt like I was in some cool place in Islington or Camden. The kitchen is open plan on view. The staff are great friendly and efficient. The menu is great, no sign of a Madras or a Korma, but interesting and appealing home cooked dishes. I had a fish curry, the spicing was fresh and tasty and the fish pieces were cooked just right. In case I haven't been clear, this is a Great place, that deserves to be very successful. Did I mention that it was also great value? Highly recommended.

My husband & I dined here last night, it was excellent. Not your normal indian restaurant but an authentic street cafe. We liked that you can watch as your meal is being cooked. The food was amazing full of flavour, the portion sizes were perfect & the prices were very reasonable. We had the Calcutta chicken roll & chicken farcha for starters, chicken malai tikka & galouti kebab for mains. We will be visiting again for certain.

Giudizio personale eccellente

Stayed in the attached inn with my wife the night before a sailing to Hoek of Holland. The rooms were fine for the price but the meal we had next door was genuinely superb. Friendly service, a lovely room to eat in and great, cosy atmosphere. Our dinner was some of the best Indian food I've ever had, freshly cooked with great ingredients and much more flavour than most 'curries'. Recommended.

We ate at the Captain Fryatt because we were staying overnight there. What a happy accident! The food is based on Indian family recipes and was some of the best we have ever tasted. Could be worth moving to Harwich!

An original and refreshing approach to Indian food - based on the street food and run by the local spice factory that imports its own spices, flour and rice. The Laila Grill is a welcome addition to the local scene with delicious tandoori and pot food and exciting starters. The prices are excellent. A meal for three including a drink comes out at about 36 pounds. You can also buy the imported basmati rice and chutneys in the restaurant.

Had dinner here on the 2nd August. The approach to the restaurant could be off-putting as sits amongst streets of terraced housing. The pub, The Captain Fryatt, fronts the main street and a quick look in the bar wasn't encouraging, however, if you go down the side of the building there is a direct entry to the restaurant with its much warmer feel and welcome. The restaurant is nicely decorated, quite modern and most importantly, very clean. The young waitress was very helpful and attentive and was happy to explain how the ordering worked and provide more information about the menu.We all ordered something different for starters and then shared with each other, with all the dishes getting a thumbs up. The main course was very very good and nicely presented and the portions were a good size. I had the fish option which was really tasty and aromatic with lovely flaky fish pieces. The accompanying Naan breads were particularly good. The smell of of the cooking and spices certainly whets your appetite and we will certainly be going back to try other offerings on the menu.Best of all, the cost of the meal was very reasonable and it won't be long before we go back. Good service and really good food - well done.

After the previous review I waited until the return trip from Holland to post this. I enjoyed a good feed at the Laila Grill @ Captain Fryatt with no ill effects. The veg Pakora arrived plentiful in number and piping hot (I actually burnt my mouth being used to usual luke warm offerings elsewhere). The lentils were well spiced and satisfying; the tandori roti and rice & veg were good (mixed frozen veg but this was fine). The waitress was friendly and the chef prepared the meal in view of the restaurant. £16 for starter, main, beer and after dinner tipple so good value. Pleasant decor, probably much nicer than the pub. I recommend.

The Laila has not been open long in its current form, but is now owned (I believe) by one of the major importers of spices into the UK. This is very much apparent in the cooking. We chose the Laila for a Father's Day lunch, having heard mixed reviews but wanting to try "Indian Street Food" in Harwich. The brutal honesty is that this is not a "fine dining experience", but that the food itself is absolutely fantastic and we will definitely be returning. The menu offers dishes I've never heard of, so was very keen to try. Between 4 adults we had as starters a couple of portions of batata wada pav, a ragda pattice and an akuri roll. If you know what they are, then great. If not, full descriptions are in the menu. All were incredibly tasty, a triumph of flavour over heat, and a real treat for those of us raised on British-style curries and keen to try something different. As mains we had ra-ra gosh, lamb korma, and pindi channa. Again, these were not dishes served in the normal UK way. My mother in law, not the most adventurous diner, loved the korma which bore no resemblance to supermarket gloop. My wife raved about her dish as comparable with food she'd enjoyed in Singapore.Although none of us are vegetarian, the menu choices for veggies are amazing (Sue had 2 veg dishes just because they looked so good). About a third of the menu is what I'd call "authentic" vegetarian i.e. a proper recipe, not just with meat taken out.Although not terribly obvious, the Laila does cater for kids- just ask when you're there. A fully enclosed outside seating area also takes a bit of pressure off if your wee ones want to unwind.Overall, if you're local then you really should try this. It's half a mile from Harwich International train/ ferry port, so if you're passing through give it a go. And if you arrive on a cruise ship wondering what to do, give it a go. Really good food.

Indian food lovers have come to know the regular type menu with a few additions for the 'Chef's Special, this was different, they say street food but not what I expected. We had 4 starters, 4 mains, 2 Rice, 2 Naans and drinks which came to the princely sum of £50 and we were extremely satisfied without the overfull heavy feeling. All cooked to order in a clean relaxed contemporary setting, you can see the chef while he works too.We went early before boarding the ferry to Holland and it was very quiet so can't comment on service or atmosphere when it's busy so we will have to go back and try it again!!! you may not recognise the names on the menu but delicious and there is a description on the menu - I can recommend the Chicken Angara - a skewered chicken dish from the Tandoor.Harwich has some very good 'eateries' and this is amongst them

So we're sitting talking to friends in the Alma. The Captain Fryatt is an Indian Restaurant now! My wife insists we try it! But I'd rather go to our favorite in Manningtree. "Oh you don't want to try anything new". Better the devil you know! I say! How wrong I was! Firstly, (which I like) the food is prepared in view of the clients. Our bottle of Merlot wine costs only £9.00. My wife has the Vegetable Pakoras (only £2.95) Beautifully presented with two accompanying sauces. Almost a meal in itself (my wife passes me several pieces - YUM!!!) I try the Dahi Bhalla - North Indian lentil dumplings topped with sweetened yogurt and date chutney, topped with spices and coriander (out of this world). We followed this with the Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori King Prawn (3 but £2 each extra prawn) and Kadai Chicken accompanied by vegetable rice. Well! All I can say is (heavenly). Unfortunately my wife was right again(and I hate to admit that). The waitresses (of whom there were many) informed us that the chef could tailor dishes to our preference (hotter etc). To be honest there was no room for a desert even if I had wanted one. Some might say that the menu was not as comprehensive as other Indian restaurants in the area, but when the food on offer is that good who cares! To sum up. Surroundings nice, Staff polite, smart and efficient. Food to die for! And fantastic choice of background music to match! With out doubt the best Indian food in Harwich and at a good price including the wine! Anyway, don't believe me (or my wife!!!). Give it a try you won't be disappointed.Opens at 12pm for lunch and then 5-30pm for the evening.

Laila Grill is an interesting restaurant serving Indian Street food from an open kitchen to the rear of the nicely refurbished Captain Fryatt pub. It is bright and clean, with friendly staff. The menu has a good selection of dishes and many I hadn't tried before. The veggie friend who was with us was happy that there were quite a few options on the menu and we all ordered far too much as we wanted to try new things. The absolute highlight was the fish tikka - but we enjoyed everything we ordered although probably the only downside was the lamb in the lamb dish was a little tough. We ordered two starters to share between 4 and some popadoms, the veg pakoras were lovely with a nice selection of veg in them, and the potato and chick pea dish was nice and spicey! The food was nicely spiced and arrived hot and fresh. The accompanying breads were also good. We ordered a desert to try between us - not having a sweet tooth and all full but we wanted to try something different. The carrot and ice cream was definately different and actually quite nice once you got over the "carrot for afters" idea! The restaurant was bright and fairly busy when we were there at 7 pm and by the time we left all the tables were full so I would recommend booking at the weekend especially as we found the prices very reasonable for what we had. It is in a bit of an out of the way location but worth a visit and definately a pit stop if you are going over on the boat - we had a look at the bar which has been nicely refurbished and they also accommodation which looks nice. Also does takeaway.

Not many people visiting Harwich take a detour to Parkeston Quay, the old naval base and barracks with a few dockside streets. Captain Fryatt's pub has been purchased by the Basmati rice importers Surya Foods and converted into an agreeable and very good value hotel and an outstanding restaurant which serves Indian street food - the best I have eaten outside India. This is not your typical UK Indian restaurant, but serves unusual superbly spiced dishes. The chef is from Karnataka and is most obliging - my request for Gulab Jamun was speedily produced even though it was not on the menu. The owner eats here with his business contacts, so quality is assured. On leaving you can, if the fancy takes you, buy 1/2 cwt of Laila rice or some of the excellent pickles and chutneys to enjoy at home.

It's one of the best curries we have ever had in a long while. Staying at the Premier Inn, we found Tandoori Nights while Ten Pin Bowling 🎳 on Google, so we ordered and collected on the way back to the hotel. We grabbed a bottle of wine from Best Supermarket up the road on Rosemary Road while it was being made. Fantastic flavour, good portions, and great service with a bit of banter with recommendations. We stay in Clacton a lot, so we now have our regular curry house. Tikka Masala, Lamb Balti, Potato Bombay Aloo, Rice and Nan £30 bargain.

Amazingly tasty dishes, that were all well timed & delivered by a very friendly service. The place it's kept clean and tidy, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to dine out. Very reasonable in pricing for the fine quality of food given. Easily the best place for Currys in the area. Been local for 25+ years. Go here! - JIIM (@jiim_music)
