We have been going to this restaurant for years now. The food is beautiful and we have never had a bad meal yet. The staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. This is the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, the food is amazing and the staff are first class. I take the family once a month, our favourite dishes are Crispy Shreaded Chilli Chicken, Mongolian Chicken, Chowmein, and Peking Duck. Christine, Roy, Jenny, and Kim always go the extra mile for us. Highly recommend a visit

Being British born, Hong Kong Chinese, going to the Capitol Chinese Cuisine restaurant in Birkenhead is hands down, the best meal I have ever eaten out at since my parents took me to my first Chinese restaurant eating out experience when I was a very young boy in the early 1970s. The decor of this well established restaurant wins out over those who are located in London's Chinatown. The service was very attentive. The food was just the best. We had the won ton soup where the won tons tasted as though they were home made. Tightly wrapped and filled with the finest fillings. The spring rolls were also beautiful, stuffed full with delicious, crispy mix of fresh vegetables. The rice we had to accompany our dishes was super soft and fluffy - just as my parents would have enjoyed. a tea brighter than Jasmine or Oolong was available on tap too. So brilliantly beautiful and so beautifully brilliant.

We went to the Capitol for a family celebration. 9 of us, including 3 children, had the banquet menu. The food was delicious, including the vegetarian banquet, and was imaginative and well presented. The waiting staff were efficient and friendly and went out of their way to give the children a good experience.

Meal for 2 on a Saturday evening. Restaurant was empty! Started with barbecue ribs; questionable barbecue sauce as tasted more like bisto gravy with some garlic in! Hot and sour Soup was ok. For mains we had salt and power chicken, chicken with chilli and garlic; egg fried rice and salt and pepper chips, all ok but have better in takeaways elsewhere. Service quite slow for an empty restaurant, probably would not go back.

Ordered two starters of barbecue ribs and salt and pepper ribs. They were absolutely awful the barbecue ribs were in a bistro gravy sauce and the salt and pepper were rolled in some powder. We are regulars at this restaurant. Great food, great service and deserves more business than it’s receiving. Being located in central Birkenhead - this place used to be booming in years gone by - but very quiet now. Make an effort and get down there to try it out. Otherwise it will be one of the next victims of this dying town!

Disappointed, I moved from London and can’t seem to find a decent Chinese that sells what they advertise ( in particular shu mai). I ordered a takeout which cost just shy of £30 for four starters, 3 spring rolls bland!, chicken skewers they lacked any sort of peanut flavour and spice and the prawn toast was soggy! The only decent thing was the shu mai which I was happy about, they did for ONCE contain prawn!

Walking around Birkenhead on a Tuesday evening the food options are extremely limited to say the least! Opted to try the Capitol Chinese Cuisine, mainly as it was open and i was hungry. I was the only customer for the first hour, followed by a single couple who entered just before i left - it was a Tuesday, but still quiet. Lots of awards on the walls - though from closer inspection, they are from the late 1990's! Friendly staff who explained the meal options - opted for a 2-course meal deal eating in. Soup followed by a meaty main with egg fried rice. Happy to point out Gluten Free Options. Food arrived in good time - was filling but slightly disappointed, as it seemed to make been reheated at some point - all for approx £14 inc drink. Nice Chinese artwork on the walls and whilst the restaurant was clean and tidy - the toilets smelled like they hadn't been cleaned in a month. So overall a bit disappointing, in a town of limited options, with a restaurant trading on past awards from 25 years ago!

Ordered hot and sour soup. The orange glow from the bowl was more like something you'd get at chernobyl. It was so bright it hurt my eyes and had neither hot nor sour flavour, just sweet on sweet on sweet. The waitress took it back to try and get it right but the replacement was no different. The crispy duck was lovely. Then came the main course. I'd swear the sweet and sour sauce was just the soup reused as it had exact same flavour and look. The chicken was tough and had a funny taste too. Hubby had chicken and sweetcorn soup. Bland bland bland. And crispy shredded chicken in chilli and garlic sauce. I think they got a deal on the radioactive gloop as, you guessed it, it was the hot and sour soup all over again! The fried rice tasted like old chip fat. The service was great and that's what I gave the star for. If it was on service alone it would be top marks. Avoid at all costs unless you just want crispy duck. Oh and the jasmine tea came ice cold. I had to specify they used boiling water on the refill.

There have been a few changes to the wine menu again. I am pleased to say that Roy has done a great job in selecting wines that are excellent value. Starting with the whites, the La Cabane Reserve Marsanne/Viognier (number 5 on the wine list) is fresh, fruity and light. It is a good match for seafood starters such as Capitol King Prawn and Har Gow. Number 9 on the wine list is now the outstanding Savigny-les-Beune Blanc from Domaine de Bellene. This 2017 vintage will only get better over the next 2 or 3 years. It is a white Burgundy with a rich, deep colour and a well-balanced mineral and oak palate. At £45.95 , it is more than £36.00 cheaper than the Mersault Goutte d'Or Premier Cru (number 10 on the wine list) but is only marginally less refined and enjoyable (prices correct on 2 June 2019). If you want a grown up white at a reasonable price, this is the one to go for. There are also two new reds on the list. Number 20 is a Clare Valley (Australia) Shiraz by Barry & Sons. I have (in the past) been a terrible snob about New World wines. However, over the past ten years it has become increasingly difficult to maintain my view that French reds are always better than anything else. This wine is excellent. It has lots of luxurious berry fruit flavours and a hint of cinnamon. It is substantial but not heavy-handed in its execution. It is a good wine - not great - but is a good match for beef dishes, especially those served with a black pepper sauce. The other new red is number 23 on the list. It is the Rully Chapponnieres by P et M Jacqueson. As with the two new whites, there is not much separating these two new reds. The Barry & Sons Shiraz has no noticeable oakiness, whereas the Rully does. If it is an oaky red that you prefer than I still prefer the Chateau Mauvesin Barton (no relation), which is the same price as the Rully (£39.95). Now for the champagnes. Roy has chosen to add another fashionable brand - Laurent Perrier La Cuvee - with which I am not very impressed. In my opinion, at £49.95, it is overpriced. I would much rather spend about a tenner more on the Bollinger. However, if it is important for you to be seen to be consuming the 'right' brands, then choose number 26 on the wine list.

We ordered the chefs banquet which started with chicken and sweet corn soup, followed by a platter of starters, (ribs, prawn toast, satay chicken, spring rolls) and then a quarter duck. After this we had mains of beef in black bean sauce on a sizzling plate, sweet and sour chicken with rice. Actually writing it all out makes us seem pretty piggy but hey ho. We visited Capitol Chinese Restaurant on a Friday night with a group of friends. The restaurant was easy to find and staff were welcoming. The exterior could do with some modernising however the interior was up to date and fairly well decorated. We ordered a range of food between us including a starter each. The portions were a decent size and were at the higher end of average price for a Chinese. My fiancée claimed the spare ribs we chose were the best she had had in a long time. I chose a chicken and sweetcorn soup which was also nice. For our main course we went for crispy chilli beef and a beef in black bean sauce, which again way a pretty good standard in flavour and quality. We did make the mistake of having a rice each – the portions were massive so we could have probably shared one between two. Overall the restaurant seemed very pleasant and had nice food. If I was in the area again I would consider returning.

Food is very tasty and gluten free options are excellent.Only problem is that is a little pricey as a takeaway. Anything over £25 gives you a 10% discount and allows you to use a debit card without extra charges. My meal came to £24.80: they did not allow me to pay by card and I had to pay the full price as I was 20p under the £25 threshold. This does not particularly encourage me to return. As the restaurant was almost empty they should be offering incentives to all takeaway customers- a disappointing experience.

Having visited this restaurant for over 20 yrs it has always been a firm favorite of ours.We havent been for about 2 yrs and went last night as a late valentines treat,it was awfull. We ordered capitol banquet for 2 as usual, the soup was luke warm, crackers greasy, the platter had 2 nice items on it the rest were lacking in taste and heat, the chicken skewer was so tough i couldnt even bite it.then came the duck,i lifted the lid off the pancakes and they were fridge cold,i told the waitress who took them away and warmed them (in the microwave!!!) they were so hard i could knock them on the plate,we complained to the manager who just said "oh i am sorry ,do you want more" we declined and moved on to the main, the beef was lovely as was the rice but the sweet and sour chicken was just cheap nuggets in a teaspoon of sauce. The banana fritters were practically thrown at my husband. When we came to pay we were still charged the full amount and on apologies whatsoever for the pancakes. We left a good tip purely for the lovely waitresses who were working really hard.I will not be going back to the capitol again.i was so dissapointed.

I has sweet and sour chicken and that was just the chicken nuggets in sweet and sour sauce, ineadable. The beef in blackbean sauce was lovely. I had 2 glasses of coke but the 2nd was was extremely flat. £2 each for a small cup of juice per child. Like I said, staff are friendly and restaurant is lovely and clean but the food lacks.

I don't even know where to start.. camehere for a family reunion because we came here a few years back and it WAS good quality food.We had a banquet for four people (2 x chef, 2 x capitol) the chicken & sweetcorn soup was nice then it went downhill from there. The ribs didn't have no meat on very poor quality of starters. There wasn't enough pancakes or hoisin sauce to go with the crispy duck. At this point when the waiter & waitress cleared the table we ordered more drinks.. Still waiting for drinks 20 minutes later we started getting the rice for the mains so we had to prompt the women on the bar about our drinks apparently she didn't see out order on the bar. Then we were waiting ages for our mains to arrive, so the rice was cold. The portion sizes of the mains were small certainly not enough for four adults, the quality for the price was disgusting. If it was good quality food but small portions I would've understood, but the food was chewy over cooked and everything tasted the same.I even had dessert which is not like me at all, usually when I have a banquet at any other Chinese restaurant I'm left unable to move.. which is how I expect to be. Overall this visit was a massive disappointment will not visit here again and I would not recommend it. I had a lot more to say about this place but TripAdvisor won't let me post what I want to say..

Was with three friends for the set menu New Year banquet. The food was superb as was the service and entertainment. Not a seat to spare. And for those from Blackpool the Birkenhead tunnel is at the end of the street☺Unfortunately the card machine was down so I had to go to RBS nearby. I do wonder if this was a coincidence. Why though would you want all that cash on the premises. Given this is Birkenhead renowned for being such a safe & secure town!

We have been to this restaurant on many occasions but we were disappointed with the meal we had here for Chinese New Year. It was obvious that staff were trying their best with a very busy evening but the service and food were not worth the money. Parts of the meal were forgotten and we had to ask several times for the pancakes to go with the duck and when they arrived they gave us one each and we had to ask for more. We were left with empty glasses and when the main meals came out the rice was brought out first and then we had to wait for the main dishes. The entertainment was good with the dragons coming into the restaurant but very lame compared to our last experience a few years ago. At the end on the night we asked for the bill and were told they could only accept cash. My husband had to go to a cash point to obtain the cash to pay. I feel we should have been told it was cash only at the beginning of the night.

A party of us went to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a banquet. The food was amazing - set menu and they also had dragon dancing. Great food and staff. They were friendly and efficient. Prices were reasonable. Had a great evening would recommend giving it a try. Normal menu food also looked amazing

Just had a takeaway for 5 people that cost over £100. The quality of this restaurant has gone significantly downhill. The spring rolls both meat and vegetable were inedible. The hoisin sauce to go with the duck was so watered down that it just slid off the pancakes. The prawn toast is still good but not as thick as it used to be. Only two of the five main meals were up to standard and the portion sizes are much smaller than they used to be. Overall a complete let down. After using this restaurant for over 20 yrs it's goodbye from us. Wish it had never been sold the previous owners took pride in their food.

Visited here a few times since takeover. The food is lovely but have to say they could improve on some things. The ribs definitely need improving upon, have tried the different ones and none of them are really good. Maybe add a bit of star anise to them for the taste. Also the starters in the evening set buffet are really small, this needs addressing quickly. Hopefully we will see these improvements soon.

I would just like point out I'm not a local person, I work all over the UK. My order was yung chow fried rice, salt and pepper chicken, black pepper sauce and a portion of chips which came to sub total of £32.80, that is expensive. The food I received was not £32.80 quality, the rice had a weird smell to them, the salt and pepper chicken wasn't crunchy, black pepper sauce was ok but not brilliant. Overall I'm not going to say avoid the restaurant I'll let you make that decision, just be careful what menu they use for take out, they used the main menu (sit in) to calculate the price, she did say I would get 10% discount if I use cash.

There is no doubt that the owner is not as genuinely friendly as the previous owners and the food is not as good as it used to be but that having been said, they have managed to keep most of the previous owners recipes and are doing a reasonable job of producing good quality food. We stopped getting meals some while ago after initially being disappointed with the food but I guess we were just comparing with previous. We have gone back a couple of times and not been too disappointed. Definitely worth a try.

Ate here the other evening, the food was very good and the staff were brilliant as well. As in previous reviews the decor is a bit dated and the menu is a little on the expensive side compared with other Chinese Restaurants in the area but we had a Diners discount card which made it very afforable.

Always been a fan of this restaurant so was not sure what to expect since a management take over. However, we were greeted with the same warm welcome and a great menu selection. Now with the addition of a gluten free range. The service was excellent as was the quality of our food. Food was hot and high quality I could not fault anything here. Our hosts Christine and Roy - in my opinion - are providing the same quality and care to this great restaurant as the previous owner's.

We were too tired to cross to Liverpool that evening and had the Capitol recommended. We were not disappointed; great food and all the staff were good and could not have been more helpful or charming.

I went here last weekend with my family. I was the only coeliac member of the party, but I've never been anywhere that catered to me so well; the range of food available was much larger than usual, the staff were really pleasant and assured me everything was cooked separately. It's a good atmosphere, if a tiny bit expensive, but very worth what you pay. Would recommend to anyone, gluten free or not!

Having visited before and being very pleased we went back. We knew that from first visit it is more expensive than average, but I believe you get what you pay for and don`t mind every so often. We went for the tea time special, soup/mixed starter and a main each with rice. This was 14.95 each. we also ordered a quarter of crispy duck to share at 13.95. Food was excellent quality, but we were a little disappointed with the mixed starter that included 1 spring roll each, 1 veg samosa each a little pile of seaweed and a little pile of picked cabbage. When I have had similar elsewhere, much cheaper, the starter includes ribs, prawn toasts etc, so was disappointed, but everything else was first class, so we just know for next time to order differently. Restaurant was spotless, staff friendly and attentive, with the correct balance of not being too "in your face". Will definately eat here again!

Not just restaurant-quality but good restaurant quality for a lot less than the local takeaway competition. Definitely of the non-greasy variety. Yellow bean sauce was done properly (not naming any names but a nearby competitor's was basically plum sauce). Try the chicken with cashewnuts in yellow bean sauce. Get a second main instead of rice because they're such good value. Wishing the staff the best

A well presented takeaway, clean, hygienic, with friendly staff which offers a very wide variety of foods from fish and chips to omelettes, chinese food to pizzas. Highly recommended.

Place is a scruffy hole, only ordered chicken fried rice. £7.80 for a small container barely any chicken and a few pieces of spring onion. Very disappointed, not nice and tasted heavily of salt only. First and last order there.
