Capital Fish Bar in Cardiff

Tried to order online and food never arrived. Just don't bother as you'll wait an ages for nothing to arrive. Just a waste of time and not worth the effort

I've never made a complaint on here before but I feel as though it's necessary. Me and my partner ordered some chips late last night (20/12/23). The chips were clearly cooked in old oil and as you can see from the image above had loads of black bits on them. The sausage and batter was also re-fried and came out very crusty and tasteless. Me and my partner now feel very sick this morning. Don't go here. Terrible service and food.

Hung up twice by them on the phone, they said hello and I said where’s my order please I ordered it an hour ago? .THEY HUNG UPPP!!!! Then ignored my next 6-10 calls! Then was an hour later with delivery! Places order at 6.30, was due to come 7.10-7.30 … finally arrived 8.10 cold! Vile £24 for a cold soggy chippy and a large curry sauce was just enough for one person so my family wasn’t happy plus my children waiting up late on a school night for what was meant to be a suprise weekend treat!! In response to your reply I do not appreciate being hung up by the man after I asked what time my order will arrive . It’s rude customer service

One of the best chippy in Cardiff. Everytime I ordered food, it's the same delicious taste with crispy fish and chips. Must try.

Ripped me off in store. They don't do Masala Fish anymore because I asked twice for a small/regular Masala fish and the guy charged me for a large regular fish. I am going back with the cold and mostly uneaten large fish tonight for a full refund. Disgusted in the blatant disregard of my order request and pushing the larger payment option on me last minute. Doubt the experience is much better when ordering online.

I have been ordering from Capital Fish Bar for years, they have had the best fish 'n' chips all this time. I ordered last month, and the food was awful. I thought I would stay quiet and let them off one bad experience, and hope they are better next time. I ordered for delivery on Saturday 12 August, a family treat, considering I have been trying to avoid takeaways of any kind. I ordered through Just Eat as usual. The Just Eat app showed that our food left Capital at 7.05pm, I live about 5 minutes away. Our food arrived at 7.55pm, by which time the food was lukewarm, 'sweaty' and greasy. However, again, the food was generally horrible, the portions were much smaller, and the prices were higher. Also, the menu said that if you order fish and chips they would give a free chicken pie. The offer (the hook) convinced me to order fish and chips, but they did not deliver it. I phoned Capital and complained. The person on the phone at Capital told me that the ownership changed about 2 months ago. He said that they had run out of pies, so they just left it off, no substitution, no phone call, just assumed it was OK not to fulfill the contract of sale and not to honour the offer they made that I had accepted. He also said that they only had one driver for the evening, who had to make lots of deliveries. The person at Capital has been there since the previous ownership, he does not approve of the practices the new owners have put in place, he said they are just trying to increase profits by ripping customers off. He agreed that portion sizes and standards have dropped, and prices have gone up, thinking that they will make more money this way. He said he would let the new owners know about the disaster of our meal delivery, and they would contact me on Sunday with an apology and some form of a solution. No-one called on Sunday or Monday. I called them back on Tuesday and I was told that they would call me back in the afternoon or Tuesday evening. No call came. I have called again Wednesday, they said they will call me later. I think they are hoping that I will just go away. Maybe I will, considering the food is now horrible, the service is now so poor, and their attitude to customer satisfaction stinks.

An example of portion size and quality - I ordered large fish, which in all of the pictures is much longer than the polystyrene box. What I received fitted comfortably within the box, with room to spare, and the greasy batter had stuck to the box. They used to have to fold the ends of the fish over to get into the box, and it was always a crispy batter, but not anymore. This time the large fish was the size of the previous small fish. The man on the phone agreed, and said that he had brought this to the attention of the new owners, but they don't care. He said he would let the new owners know about the disaster of our meal delivery, and they would contact me on Sunday with an apology and some form of a solution. No-one called on Sunday or Monday. Charged £4 for a large chips and tried to fob us off with a small because there wasn't enough to give a large bag. We were given £10 back but once we got home& saw the state of the food we had been given. It was disgusting and should have never been served. We should have been given a full refund. Whichever clowns were working there tonight didn't have a clue. An older gentleman who said he was only working today and two younger men. Its a pity because it used to be nice. Never again

Why would you send all your food in wrapped greasy paper when you know it is going to get unwrapped for then the curry is just going to seap right through everwhere morons idiots

I ordered a cheeseburger meal and a fish and chips. They forgot to fill chips into the burger meal, I called they offered to refill the chips but I am a 20 minutes drive away and the inconvenience of going back to the shop to get some chips, just isn’t worth it. The food was lovely though. Would recommend just check you have your full order.

I would have rated this higher as the fish was fried fresh whilst I waited and the chips looked good. Despite me asking for extra vineger and watching the guy literally soak my entire fish and chips with vinegar, there was no taste of vinegar at all. I don't understand why some of these fish and chip shops dilute their vinegar down. How much are they going to save? Pennies?

Probably one of the worst fish and chip shops I’ve been to the chips were not cooked. The sausage was burned and it was very expensive would never come here again

Absolutely delicious fresh tasty and super affordable prices. Delivers on time and well packaged. I Absolutely love the kebab in batter .. and the chip were so soft and perfect, no grease at all. I recommend this chippy to everyone. So many options that you won't find in other chippys. My favourite.

I'm not sure what was more offensive...the cold chips and lumpy gravy or the fact x1 chips and gravy cost me £6.30! I queried the outrageous price with the manager and was told it was a 'cost of living' issue. AVoid the small portions and overpriced food and go to Albanny Fish Bar instread

Cod bites were nice, huge portion of chips. Too big to be fair, a small portion fed two of us. Ordered an onion bhaji but was sent a Samoa, bit disappointing

First time I went it was the best fish and chips I had ever had. But I went recently and the chips were dry and the fish didn't taste as good. Did you change the recipe? Both times were great service and price. God bless :)

I’ve been going to capital fish bar for around 3 years now and never been disappointed. I Recommend it to friends and they all tell me the same. My son has just finished his fish cake and chips and has a big smile. Thank you guys.

This is the best fish bar I have ever eaten at. I cannot stress enough how absolutely delicious the fish is and I am genuinely impressed by how clean and well managed the shop appears to be. This will continue to be my regular takeaway for a while I imagine.

chips: 7 out of 10, not bad. But a little bit soggy after 10 minutes biking to home Cod: Solid 9.5 out of 10, really crispy outside, and tender inside. Really good Service: 10 out of 10. I ordered by phone in advance. When I arrived the shop, just perfectly timely got my food. Really good service. I Would recommend!

I was surprised to see that this place was as good as it was. Normally city Rd is full of fast food dripping with all kinds of rubbish, but nope, not here. Chips are amazing and surprisingly, the pies weren't too bad either... give this place a go, you won't be disappointed.

I have had fish and chips many times from Capital Fish Bar, but never reviewed it. Fact is, they have never put a foot wrong, it is always great, it is always hot, and we have enjoyed it every time. I love the masala fish, but my wife always has the regular fish and really too many chips! We love it!

This is the first time I have bought from Capital Fish bar. The food was amazing and the staff were helpful and friendly. I give this fish bar 10 stars 🌟 and would highly recommend this fish bar to anyone who is looking for excellent quality food at affordable prices. This was suppose to be my American partners first fish and chips. Very disappointed to say the least, chips were soggy and cold, fish batter was also soggy and the battered sausage too. No salt and vinegar. The curry sauce was decent Wasted $20 on a meal we could not eat and now feeling sick from all the soggy grease.

Good quality food, all freshly cooked. Staff are friendly and always serve you with a smile! Best chippy in Roath, no doubt.

What can I say, I'm in love with this shop yes it was my first visit but the customer service was excellent and the food.Wooow the fish was cooked fresh the curry sauce is the best I've ever had.My mom doesn't normally eat chip shop but I brought her a fish and chips too (we had the family meal)this morning we was all still talking about the food the night before. If you visit cardiff make sure you drop in here.

Visited for first time and i have to say the fish and chips was top draw big piece of freshly cooked cod lovely chips and the irish curry was lovely the gentleman serving even gave me some free food to try i will definately be going back on a regular basis

ordered twice from this place, great quick service, food is nice and would order from here again, although have eaten better fish and chips previously.

We go here regularly for takeaway fish and chips, the food is good and it's in a good spot on City Road.
