Love this place, great food and service

Nice food great value for money on the pensioners special Monday to Saturday

5 people. Starters mains and desserts. Pies were amazing. Chicken burger was so tasty as was the veggie burger. Belly pork.. out of this world. Starters and puddings were perfect. 2nd visit for us as we travel from Liverpool and Lincs to meet up and will deffo go again. This is our perfect meeting spot but we are all too stuffed to drive home!!!

We visited the Canal Tavern as a party of 15 for a baby shower meal and the staff were wonderful. Communication before the meal with the pre order was excellent, and despite the fact that nearly every person ordered a different meal, we all thoroughly enjoyed our food. We are very grateful for to Canal Tavern for hosting us!

Best place for Sunday lunch by far, so much so we have become regular customers. Food always lovely & hot & quick service. Staff are lovely too. Large choice of meats & vegetables. You fill out a form saying what you want it's that easy. Never had a bad meal here & price is great

This is the second time we've been here, and both times were amazing. I can't recommend this place enough! Great food and lovely staff. Have three courses, not because you need three to be full, but because all three are worth it!

Brilliant pub, wide range of drinks available, always a good atmosphere. Usually go in here for food and everytime has been spot on, from starters to deserts, even the kids meals are great. Priced fairly for the quality you get, you do usually have to book though as it gets quite busy. Plenty of parking across the road, conveniently under a bridge too

We have never had a bad experience here, always good. The staff are friendly and the food is great with a good variety of meals to suit most tastes. My Partner is a big fan of the pies, my favourites are the hanging kebabs and the belly pork. We never have room for a dessert unfortunately! Sunday lunch is also very good.

Great food, very busy on a Sunday lunch so a delay in getting seated from our booking time, however the food was excellent but the dining area was cramped and lacked atmosphere

Been for lunch today. I had fish and chips and they were very nice, batter was light n crispy the fish was white and tasty. Home cooked chips and mushy peas.

15/11/23. Myself and my mum visited here today to see a friend of mine who has been laid to rest near by. We decided to try canal tavern for our lunch. Well what can I say. The whole experience was great. Shown to our table no pressure to order food looked at our leisure and was given plenty of time to order. Very very clean pub and very good customer service skills from all staff from bar to serving staff. So what about the food here? Well it’s a place that I will be coming back to very soon. Rump steak sandwich and I had the garlic mushrooms for starters. Cooked to perfection both meals. I will be going and and will try more types of food on menu. 5stars and much much more. Our friend who was laid to rest near by past away of a year ago from the date I date put above, just to anyone seeing this review we travelled from Barnsley to here and this lovely pub was recommended from my friends son and his daughter who are still in Thorne. We respected. VISITED AGAIN 27/9/24 had the mussels in thi green sauce. Wow absolutely delicious and amazing.

A wide variety of foods on the menu, Noddles, Burgers, Hanging kebabs, Fish dishes. Too full from a starter & main to manage a dessert.

Visited on the way back from family. Service was excellent - well looked after. Food was good portions and very tasty. Loved the funky mirrors inside. Outside could be developed further. Would visit again!

Quite a few gluten free options. I had a gluten free burger, which was lovely.

Can't believe how nice it was been in for a drink but couldn't get a table so this time went in diner time and booked a table for the evening still bisey but great food and service would recommend this place

A lovely meal at The Canal Tavern.I had muscles and they were delicious. They do discount for pensioners which was ideal for my Mum and Dad. Great food and service.

Had lunch here with mum n dad and we were all of the opinion our meals were outstanding, great service with a smile, friendly, and of a reasonable price but when you consider the quality of the food the price is cheap, my wife tried the Crispy Chinese Chicken Spice Bag which was very very good, me and dad and the Nephew had steaks, which were cooked absolutely as we asked and were of a brilliant quality and mum had the gammon from the pensioners menu which was gone before the plate rested lol it was that nice, great place, would highly recommend and give yourself a treat and visit for the best Sunday diner in Yorkshire it’s that good

Reasonable prices. Good range of drinks. Nice food. Good atmosphere. Always busy and popular with locals. Sunday lunch is well worth a try.

Another pub that's always makes you feel welcome, great beer, and a really nice Sunday lunch, although I have never had one as they are always booked up. Will keep trying, plenty of parking, outside table n chairs , nice walk along the canal as well

Always busy, the Sunday lunches are such value for money. Always book!! During the week, the menu is varied, giving you so much choice. The food is excellent!! Staff helpful and cheerful. A lovely pub.

Booked to have a Sunday dinner here after good reviews from friends. And have to say it was a really nice meal everything cooked to perfection.. Like the idea of the list to pick what you want so the staff can take it and bring you just what you ordered in good time too. Very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. If I had 1 criticism it would be that they do an oap option on the list which was perfect for mum.. But they don't do an extra option for those with bigger appetites. I'm 6ft 3 and can eat for England yet ended up with the same size meal as my wife that eats half as much as I do. So was left wanting . I would have happily paid for a larger portion if one was available. Maybe something to think about.

Excellent Food, Excellent service, absolutely faultless, hat off to the chef and staff, literally faultless amd enjoyed by all been twice now and will be going again in the near future. Highly recommend

Had a party of 6 where everyone had a different main meal and mostly different deserts. The food was excellent from the first bite and the last mouthful of dessert. Friendly staff... Prompt service of food and drinks.. pleasant atmosphere. What more could you want.

Absolutely shocking for the people of Thorne. I phoned to book the function room for a 50th birthday 30+ people with the £8.50 a head buffet + drinks( it was going to be an open bar tab) and was told it was fine I said I'd be in after work to pay. On arrival I was shown the buffet options and was about to pay for the buffet in full £255 when a waitress went to see someone in the back. She came back and informed me that it was now a minimum of 50 people although we'd been to a function not so long ago with a lot less people in it? Not much good for the people of Thorne unless you have a rather large family and friends circle. I've now booked at the Green Tree they can have my £500 -£600+ for the evening.

It's gone downhill. I was told over the phone that I could book the function room with a buffet for 30+ people and spending £8.50 per head plus drinks (it was going to be an open bar tab). When I went to pay for it 3hrs later they didn't want to know unless it's for 50 people. Oh well thanks to the Green tree they can have the £500 - £600 for the evening 😁

Family meal and every dish was very good

We had the belly pork bites in sticky Chinese sauce and the salt and pepper squid followed by the southern fried chicken breast on a Tuesday night. All the food came out piping hot and the dishes were perfectly cooked, well presented and very tasty. Service was attentive and pleasant. Reasonably priced as well! Couldn't fault it!

Visited for a Sunday Carvery after being recommended by family and friends. The food was fantastic, so tasty and plenty of it. Price was even better...£11.95 for an adult carvery! Worth every penny. Staff were so friendly and polite, nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be returning.

Needed to find somewhere for lunch whilst passing through on a road trip. Chose to try here based solely on the TripAdvisor reviews… and we were not disappointed! We had not pre booked and the staff were brilliant, extremely friendly and welcoming, finding us a table straight away. Their service was prompt and efficient and the food was excellent too. We left very impressed and would not hesitate to recommend if you are ever in the need of a good lunch provided with great service.

Wow, came here a few years ago and loved the place… didn’t eat but loved it…. But met family here yesterday for lunch… wow we LOVE the be New Reno it looks amazing! Our food and service was top knotch! Can’t want to visit again from Canada and come for lunch! Absolutely delicious. I had the pork belly bites, my husband had steak and Stilton pie (couldn’t taste the Stilton but still absolutely delicious) and our family members both had fish sandwiches !!!! Everything was amazing 🤩

Everything 5 star. Best and biggest portions I have seen

We have used this restaurant several times over a few years, and always found it great. However, this time, it was nothing short of terrible. The waitress/barmaid was curt and rude the whole evening, Times between ordering either drinks or food was a joke, as staff were at a minimum. The starters were of a reasonable quality, the mains were well under par, with Tikka Massala turning up looking more like a bowl of soup, and the rices were tepid to say the least. Where we were sat, there was two tv's above us, which when football came on, were loudly switched on, we couldn't see them, but the volume made conversation almost impossible. I can only assume a change of ownership, as it was a total contrast since we last used it, and won't be using it again. Shame.

This place looks unpromising from the outside but the inside is lovely. The main dining room is down some steps from the bar area so not wheelchair accessible unless there is an entrance directly from the canal. We sat in the bar area because we had our dog with us. We only went in for a drink but had to try the cheesecake after seeing someone else's!

The food was amazing the staff are great

This was my second visit to the Canal Tavern and it has had a revamp to make it even nicer inside. It's a lovely location and on a sunny day would be an ideal location for a walk along the canal. There's a varied menu with some classic pub dishes and some more interesting ones. I had a new item on the menu, crispy Chinese chicken spice bag, I wasn't sure what to expect but it was delicious, lightly battered chicken pieces and fries with stir fried onions and peppers with a jug of Chinese curry sauce. Other people with me had burgers, gammon, scampi and lasagne. All the food was well presented and tasty. There were 8 of us so the food took a little while to arrive but this was a good sign it was fresh. There was some music being played but it was reasonably quiet which meant it was a nice place to sit as a family and chat. The staff were friendly and the drinks were reasonably priced.

Service was kind and friendly and the food was phenomenal. It was the best food I’ve eaten at a restaurant for years. We rebooked before leaving as we’re going to make our way through the menu! Dress up or be casual, either way goes.

Great atmosphere, with good food any time of the week & friendley staff. Can get busy on a Sunday, for meals so, booking is advisable.

Food was really nice, I had the Chicken and Black Pudding pie, and the filling was delicious. The pastry was disappointing as it was unfortunately quite hard. The Garlic and Thyme Mushroom starter was exceptional. I would highly recommend for anyone in the vicinity if they were wanting food, and my friends thought their steaks were outstanding.

It is the first time we have eaten here. Our friends who eat here from time to time invited us & we weren't disappointed. Would like to come back again.

We stopped here on the way home from a weekend away. We didn't book, as we didn't know what time we would arrive. We were very lucky that they had a free table for us. As it was a Sunday, only Sunday lunch was available but this was enough. With a choice of beef, pork, or turkey, with lamb for an extra £1, you can get 2 meats, plus all the extra and lashings of gravy for those who want this too! Staff were nice, food was good and a decent portion size. We even managed to take a look at the nearby canal on our way out.

Excellent service. We hadn't booked, but they managed to find us a table, even though it was extremely busy. The food was great and good portions. Atmosphere was friendly and we stopped for a few more drinks in the bar area. Certainly worth another visit next time we're in the area and would highly recommend.

It was okay but nowhere near as good as some people make out. The wedges were nice but the burger was cold and not quite as fancy as it sounded on the menu. The onion rings were so greasy they were inedible and a pie someone else had was very small, I'm glad I didn't order that although there was a lot of empty space on the plates all round! The desserts were nice although brownie was more of a cake texture and more room temperature than warm as stated on the menu. It really wasn't worth the 45 minutes journey and I don't think we would come back, there's much nicer food closer to home.

I didn't recognize the tavern as I grew up in Thorne and spent quite a bit of my youth here new owners have done an excellent job ... and great to see the new tavern as well .....

Lovely food we had Sunday Lunch and it was cooked beautifully. Good sizes portions and the Sticky Toffee pudding was divine. We had two dogs with us and they enjoyed the experience. Staff were doing very well under pressure as the place was packed. Great Cider!!

Service a little slow but had parties on and the lovely staff were very apologetic. Food great steak perfectly cooked waitresses were all helpful and lovely. Only dropped a star as staff struggled to keep up. Venue was full... which says everything!

The hanging skewers are beautifully cooked, the drinks are prepared well, the Christmas quiz every year is the best I've been to, atmosphere and location are spot on. Would reccomend for a meal or a pint overlooking the canal.

Had a meal for six here. All of the food was of a high standard. Excellent service throughout. The value was fantastic. 6 main course, 2 deserts, a few beers, wines, etc, and a couple of wines. Bill, including the tip, was £25/ head. I will definitely come back when I'm visiting family and friends.

Just a great place to be....staff excellent beer good...home

I've passed this place many times but went in for the first time last night 30/12/23. What have i been missing? Food was slow to arrive but it takes time to prepare a good meal. It was worth the wait. Our party of 4 all had different meals and not one complaint! Will definitely be going back. Staff were very nice. Our spend per person included some drinks, main and dessert. A little gem at the side of the bridge.

Decided to go for a meal between Xmas and new year so settled for somewhere we’d been before and where we could almost be certain of satisfaction. We weren’t wrong. It was busy so the service was somewhat behind what it usually was, but food was excellent, the atmosphere was great and the staff at their very best. What more can you ask for?

Had a reservation set for 12:30pm for myself and my husband Heard very review about their food The first thing we noticed was that there not sufficient parking and we had to park a little way down the road not very far away but felt a bit insecure about leaving the vehicle there but this is nothing to do with the pub itself so it’s not their fault When we went in and got seated we were asked for drinks straight away and advised that their Sunday carvery was a bit different We were handed a price of paper with all the choices and had to tick what we wanted and then they would plate it all for us and bring it to the table so we didn’t have to get up and do it ourselves We both thought that this was actually a brilliant idea We were brought our dinners and it looked absolutely delicious The vegetables were nicely cooked, the Yorkshire pudding was big ( I couldn’t eat all of it!) the meats were wonderful Between the two of us we had beef gammon turkey and pork and all the meats just fell to pieces when we cut into them The atmosphere was lovely and warm and the staff were smiling and interacting with the clientele and being very attentive I could not fault the food here and the staff and will definitely be recommending to friends and family Well done to everyone there you are all doing a fabulous job 💜💜💜💜

I had some lovely Camembert with bread and tomato chutney and garlic mushrooms for starters. Lovely food and atmosphere, very good prices and the staff were very friendly. We will definitely be going back and have recommended it to family as its a great day out for a nice meal and a walk along the canal.

Came in today with my son who is autistic. The food was amazing the staff really friendly. The staff spoke to my son....made him feel very much at ease. The food was fantastic.....he had burger and chips I had sirloin steak...which was cooked as I asked ...medium well. We had sticky toffee pudding for dessert that not only looked amazing but tasted it too. Was also really helpful that they had a kids menu so my son could select he's own food. Highly recommended 👌

Pensioner's lunchtime special, two courses for £10 - main and dessert - really tasty and great value. Staff lovely and very helpful, but be aware that they can get very busy so waiting times can vary.

Amazing sunday lunch, the meat, i had beef, although you can pick 2, was so tender and lots of it, although it says carvery, you don't go and pick your own, but tick items you want on a list, we still got a large platefull, and it was put in front of us in less than 4 minutes from choosing, even though the place was busy, excellent friendly service, compliments to the chef and staff, amazing, you should be proud of your achievements.
