Seems like this place has changed the name a few times. Ramo's is off the sign. Doesn't matter. We had delicious fish and chips, condiments, and sat along the canal and enjoyed our meal. Perfect, and 8 British pounds cheaper than others there.

The fish was freshly cooked to order - came out delicious. However, myself and a few other customers were told off for adding to our orders after he had started cooking it. Even adding an extra item that was on the menu could not be tolerated. The one man cooked, packed, and served as cashier. The queue was long on a weekday lunchtime. If he ran his shop with a better attitude, or some help, it would be a much nicer experience.

I went with my two young sons for a pizza and fish and chips last night. The man was very abrupt from the start. All the food was cooked to order, he even had to microwave the tub of curry sauce, the service was so slow, we were waiting nearly 20 minutes in the rain. I went to pay, he took a good minute messing about with the screen on the till then told me it was £24. All I said was "£24?" As I’d worked it out to be less. He then grabbed the food off the counter and told me to go elsewhere. I then offered him the money twice and said I must have worked it out wrong and he carried on shouting at me. I then said again, here’s the money, I’ve got two children to feed and he carried on shouting at me to get out. I have never come across such aggressive hostility before and was very upset and shocked at what had just happened. I then felt sorry for my sons who’d been stood waiting and were now soaked through without any food. I had worked it out correctly and he was overcharging us by nearly £4. The little, bully of a man is obviously in the wrong job. We went to the Chinese restaurant round the corner in the end and had a lovely meal!

We tried quite a few fish and chips during our time in Scotland and this was by far the best fish we had. The fish was fresh and dipped in batter just before cooking. The chips were also very good especially with vinegar (if that’s your thing!) I definitely recommend you try here if you are in Port Augustus 😊

CONCLUSION. Catastrophique.

Come for the fish and chips, cooked while you wait and served up piping hot right from the fryer. Don’t come for friendly service or decor (none to speak of). On a nice summer evening we took our food to a picnic table alongside the canal, and enjoyed ourselves. Note: for two adults in our 60’s, one order to split was plenty of food.

Frozen chips, rude service, don’t waste your money. Called in for lunch, ordered fish & chips, and chips & curry sauce. Owner proceeded to put frozen chips in fryer and battered fish, put a lidded tub of curry sauce in microwave. Two other ladies were waiting for their orders, and two gentlemen then came in and ordered food. Wanted pizza but owner said curtly that he had no cheese! The gentleman then placed an alternative order and then wished to add onion rings, the owner seemed reluctant to add to the order but did then agree. The owner then told the gentleman to wait outside which I think he did not understand, this request/order was then rudely shouted several times! I have never witnessed such rude aggression! My husband and I were very close to walking out, but our order was just being dished up. Fish & chips served in polystyrene tray, and my curry sauce was poured all over my chips! Not what I expected, but tbh I didn’t want confrontation with him! The chips were undercooked and spoiled by all the curry sauce congealing on them. My husbands fish was ok, but quite thin. All in all a complete waste of money as most of it went in the bin. My advice is avoid!

We ventured into Fort Augustus for a look around & having previously scoped Trip Advisor for food reviews, decided to purchase lunch from the Canal Side Chip Shop when it opened at 12.00. Best decision we made, the fish & chips were honestly the best I’ve ever eaten. Hubby had sausage & chips, youngest had chips, with 3 drinks & sauces £30 in total. We sat outside in the canal side benches in 23* heat watching the world pass by. We’ve already said we’ll return for tea later in the week prior to heading home. Would definitely recommend.

Absolutely divine, we came to Fort Agustus for a nice family walk on our holiday, we decided to go for some lunch before heading to the Loch Cruise site, we saw a lovely corner fish and chip shop and thought how nice it would be to have some warm tasty food before the coldness of the loch, best decision we made, the food met and went beyond our expectations of a Chippy, it was absolutely amazing, brilliant prices aswell, we fed 5 of us for £40, and they weren't shy on the portions either. Great food Great portions Brilliant staff Absolutely would go there again and will be recommending to people who are thinking of going to the village

OMG this is the worst fish & chips in the UK!!!!! Selling this rubbish to tourists will give us all a bad name, but hey - they are making a fortune by selling rubbish. I wish I had looked at the reviews first. I can't believe that some people have given good reviews, honestly do no go in. I went last night, they take your money first, then the bag of frozen chips are pored into the fryer - zero taste but no real chippy would do this. The 3 fish were tiny & came out covered in black bits which he tried to pick off then gave up & put into the box. When the mushy peas were put into a tiny coffee cup with no lid & about 1 spoon of peas I complained - £1.50, they smiled. The fish was dry & tasteless, cant be fresh. Signs on the wall state that the wait is worth the quality, what a joke.

Popped in for chips for a sunny canal lunch stop. On arrival the male fish frier growled it will be 5 minutes for chips. They were £2.50 each for a small stingy portion of oven chips and then the serving lady decided to try and rip me off by another fiver. Tried to charge me £14.50 for 3 small chips, a bottle of pop and a bottle of water instead of an already pricey £9.50. Good job I'm on the ball. Steer clear and go to Monster fish round the corner that sells real chips at a decent portion. The only thing saving this place is the great view of the canal.

After two days without a hot meal I would have been happy to eat fish and chips from anywhere ... But here! When we entered on a busy Saturday night there was no sound of frying, no sign of any freshly cooked fish above the fryer, just the steady sound of a microwave going ping out the back. The chips tasted like the frozen ones from Iceland or Farm Foods, the fish was edible (just) and tasted as if it been freshly sourced from the same place as the chips, and the spare ribs - some form of reconstituted meat product in batter with no trace of ribs. The best I can say is the curry sauce was ok and did a good job making this all taste bearable.Apologies to all those tourists who come here looking to sample traditional fish and chips, you'd be better off eating a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and a sausage roll!We did remark "canal" when we tasted the food, or something that sounded very similar.Maybe it was just a (very) off day?

And we payed around 5£ for each meal ! Moreover, the staff was very disrespectful and not professional. We even payed for ketchup ! Don't go there !

Freshly made fish and chips and a lovely lunch by the canal -- a great option if you stop at Fort Augustus to see Loch Ness to take a cruise or just enjoy the view.

As a proud Yorkshire man and a self confessed connoisseur of the greatest dish on the planet it is with a heavy heart I write this review. Not least because I was with some highly regarded friends and colleagues and I had chosen not this establishment as the source of the evening meal together.Quite frankly these were the WORST fish and chips I have ever tasted! It was if they had been sourced from a pile of cardboard or parchment. Even when the chips were immersed in a curry sauce, which can only be described as mustard coloured water, and the chips were almost drowned in the same, they were inedible! The fish was thin and tasteless and the vendor could not even tell us what the fish was. Suffice it to say the vast majority of the food went in the bin and at £70 for 10 lots of fish and chips, coming from Yorkshire, that was a painful act to perform. We will not use this establishment again on our next visit to this beautiful place we visit regularly.

Have tried Canalside chip shop as well as the one next to the main car park in Fort Augustus. Fresh fish was delicious and cooked to order. Batter perhaps slightly overcooked but I like it really crispy so was delighted. Chips were nothing to write home about, just bog standard out of the freezer job I think. But again cooked to order and not offensive in any way! Just not spectacular... The chips served by the other chipshop down the road were average as well, and the fish not as good, so would choose to walk up the canal and visit this one if you are in Fort Augustus.

I've read some of these reviews and it makes me wonder what shop or who wrote these reviews.. we had to wait, but assumed it would be worth it as they were getting cooked from fresh.. wow what a shock we got, fish was over cooked and Inedible. And for the chips they were frozen chips taken out the frezzer and shoved in a deep fryer.. again inedible swell.. would not recommend this chippy to anyone.. .

Sunny day in Fort Augustus, combined with some other establishments being shut or having poor menu choices led us to opt to have F & Chips, canal side. Great fun, lots of activity at the Caledonian lock side location- boats going through. The haddock was chunky, of good size and freshly cooked. Chips were lovely too- & the local Inn provided a good drink to complete the experience. Recommended. Fish £5.00 Chips £2-3.00 a portion.

Really good food, cooked fresh and very tasty. Pretty good value for money, and conveniently located right next to the locks!

Got here right before they closed for the evening and placed a couple of orders for takeaway. The fish was fried up while I waited. I'm not a fish and chips expert but they seemed fine and we were satisfied. Would return.

I've been looking forward to fish and chips for a while so to find Canal Side chip shop on the canal we thought we would give it a try. I think the best part of our meal was sitting on the lock wall watching the boats sailing to Loch Ness. This i'll do another time with chips from one of the other chip shops.

We only ordered chips from here, we had to wait for them to be cooked but they were not very nice and we threw most of them away

Bought some chips and deep fried haggis from this place. The people that run it are complacent in the knowledge that they are fortunate enough to be in the middle of a tourist resort and right by the canal. Very miserable attitude and also had the cheek to charge 10p for 1 sachet of tomato ketchup, after spending £14 with her - advice - go to the chippy on the main drag - Monster Chippy.

We had to wait for our order to be freshly cooked, but as the sign says, the management feel it is better this way. No argument from me. Then, sit canal side and eat, we did on a fine sunny afternoon. Jolly good!

Having brought haggis pie needed some chips! As chip shop is on canal thought I'd give it a try. As food is cooked fresh waiting isn't a problem, but have to say chips weren't worth wait

Unusually for a chip shop, this one has nothing pre-cooked waiting for customers to buy it - so it's not exactly "fast food" but with it all being made to order, it is deliciously fresh.Usual chip shop selection, decent prices, friendly staff, and the wait is only a few minutes, so worth it for the very nice food.

A more than decent chip with a good selection of fish, pies and meats. Not a great choice for a vegetarian, but the portion size of the onion rings was impressive.

Stay away from from this place I went with my partner and the minute we walked in the restaurant was cold and I had to wear my jacket the full time I was in. The food was tasteless, I have had a better microwave Indian out of Iceland and it came to a whopping £85. Also we asked for one rice and we felt that the owner talked us into getting 2 because they were “small” they definitely were not small one would have been enough for 2 people money grabbing we felt.

Slow. Nasty and tasteless. Avoid with every being of your heart. The one down by the river is much better I can't recall the name but far tastier.
