Caldwell Tavern in Newcastle-under-Lyme

Average on food and service ordered wine and had to prompt and remind waitress to bring the bottle. BUT to get a £100 parking fine through the post 9 days later was a right kick in the teeth. We visit Toby Inns many times and you usually cannot miss the car park booking screen and are always advised as to it's requirements before ordering food. First (and last) visit to this restaurant and got nothing so forgot to register car as we never saw the screen to remind us. We didn't see any notices externally but I'm sure they are present so no joy for us there. Goodbye Toby Inns.

£100 parking fine spoilt my visit no one tells you to input your car reg. And its not on website. I will avoid Toby now plenty of places to go without fear of parking fines. Used to visit alot with friends and family so feel Toby have already lost out on custom because they enforce fines. Just another money making racket. Stear clear!

Went in weekday morning in January, and there was plenty of parking space. It is great to dine in the traditional and classical style of interior, which makes me feel eased and comfortable.

We come most Sunday's. Great service and food 👌 Always a pleasure seeing Stacey who cuts the meat, very friendly and welcoming. Saves doing the dishes after 😂

We went for a birthday meal. Atmosphere was nice, service was nice and food was OK. only problem was that the meat was a bit dry and tough but had quite a bit of flavour. Since the new renovation you now have to put your car registration in otherwise you apparently get a £100 fine. we booked online and stated that we had a wheelchair with us, the staff were very accommodating to this.

As usual, lovely good quality food. However, we queued for 25 minutes before we got to eat... the chef needed either a prod with a sharp stick or a pillow. We would still class this Toby as one of our favourites despite today's blip.

Toilets needed cleaning a bit more

Very tiny bits of meats do these chefs go to tiny cuts school, was still hungry when we left, fill up on your vegetables but come on tiny cuts of meats should be ashamed Toby carvery,

The food here is always excellent quality but sometimes the service is lacking the pub maybe short staffed or busy which I understand but surely that's the manager issue and not the customer left waiting

We arrived on the 7th January and the car park was extremely icy as it had been snowing I am a pensioner and a liver transplant patient so was very worried about falling, I put my disabled stickers in the car window and went into the Toby at Talke, a member of staff came and showed us to a table the carvery was very dry and bordering on cold on top of this because we weren’t informed when we entered the pub by the member of staff to register our car reg into a machine we got £ 100 fine which in this current climate for a pensioner is an amount that is hard to find not a good experience!!!

Very happy with the staff, service, and the food was delicious lots of choice in the veg which was fresh and the pototoes were amazing yorkshire puddings so nice gravy mmm 5* rating would reccommend will be back.

Absolute prison food! Two Beef Calvery meals & two Cappuccinos for £27 and we get given meat from the scraps off the floor in an Abattoir… couldn’t even find ONE decent piece to cut away from it to eat!! The “Chef” deserves to be Tasered serving “food” like this..

Lovely venue, clean and lots of space. We came here last year but apart from the very nice / competent manager, the three junior staff (I assume they were junior) were pretty useless. They didn't really attend to our table, I had to go and ask to order, the drinks took ages (it was less than half full) and when paying, the manager had to come over and sort out the till because two of the junior staff couldn't work it out. And they just laughed it off or blamed the till, despite the manager sorting it immediately. It took 10 minutes to pay. I love a good Toby and this is one of them, but I hope they have some intense staff training before we go again. I'm not usually critical of staff because we're all human and I still left a tip - but the service was not great when it wasn't even busy or taxing for the staff. Hope this constructive feedback helps because this is a great Toby Carvery.

terrible won't be doing it again

I had 3 Dutch friends staying, we were absolutely horrified at the price of the carvery. I had no idea the price varied depending on the day, had I known this we would have come midweek. I had to apologise profusely to my friends.

Breakfast with Santa - Waited 20 minutes to be seated, Food was Cold, Santa gave my 8 month old baby a kitkat for his gift from Santa. Baby’s can’t eat chocolate till there one. Absolute waste of money.

The Restaurant has had a refit recently and was very clean and tidy, the Staff was very pleasant and the Carvery was excellent

Just been to breakfast with Santa and Santa was the only good thing about the visit. Food was luke warm. Pancakes had nothing to go with them - when we asked the staff for some syrup they provided a tiny tub with a millimetre of syrup. When we had to ask for more, the staff member didn’t even acknowledge the request, just looked to a colleague and said ‘they want more syrup’. This is breakfast for kids, if they didn’t want people to ask for additional food (we weren’t the only ones), then they shouldn’t put pancakes on. We just paid over £40 for this and it was not worth the money at all. Shocking service!

Been going for years with no problems but sadly last visit has left a bad taste £4.15 for a coke is ridiculous and staff was unhelpful and didn't even know new price of the Carvery which is the reason you go there sadly since the redo is gone down hill will wonder if will go back we ended up going somewhere else for food which was far better

£15 for a carvery and a coke is a rip off. What used to be decent value is now far from it.

Breakfast is great value. Environment is pretty dated, but perfectly serviceable. *On the way out, I noticed you need to book your car in to avoid parking charges*. It would be easy not to notice, and finish up getting a fine.8

Went just after the reopening the place is really nice to be honest I think it is better for the food than before

When entering we were told 'theres no pork' but it turned out they said there was only pork and we heard wrong. This was at 19:45. The pork itself was pretty much all fat. And there was only a tiny selection of veg and the sauce bowls were empty. Honestly for over £10 a plate it was really disappointing honestly. I don't know if this is how they normally are at this time of night but I wouldn't come back

There's been a very good upgrade to the premises, but more importantly the food is still served by friendly staff, and is still delicious. Glad it's back open again.

I went for a breakfast date with my sister, we went at 9:30, it was lovely and quiet, a couple other families there. But it was so relaxing and very welcoming. The staff came over the check everything was ok. They provide fried eggs at the self help bar, but you can ask for scrambled eggs to be made to order.

Awful. Myself and my husband went for our dinner about 7:30pm. We were shown to our table by a young girl and asked what we wanted to drink. She didn’t seem to know anything about the menu? We went to the carvery and waited for a chef to come to us after about 5 mins he appeared looking like he had been dragged through a hedge backwards and not very happy. ALL the food was dry and shrivelled up. It wasn’t until we sat back down we realised our food was stone cold! We were only then given our drinks and the young girl asked if our food was ok. No it wasn’t. She didn’t seem that bothered and said she would get someone to check the temperature. They didn’t.We didn’t have to pay for our food not that we ate it, and we left. And we won’t be returning.

Food was great and place is very nice since the renovations.

We come every week for breakfast. Food is always fab, if we get here late they advise we go and check what’s left before we pay which doesn’t happen in other places. The carveries are always lovely too, plenty of choice for all meals. The staff are all really friendly, especially Caeris (don’t know if that’s spelled right!) they make the time to chat and all know our little boy’s name and come over to say hello to him. The place looks lovely after the recent refurb, definitely one of our favourite places to eat 😊

Looks great after refurbishment had nice Sunday lunch. I do wish the carvery team would give you proper slices of meat though. I don't think thin bits look good on a plate. Don't get me wrong we enjoyed it but the meat needs to be cut better.

food was cold, had to reheat it in the microwave. no beef that I ordered and the turkey was full of fat and grisle hardly any was enable. I asked for vegetarian gravy and got normal thick cold gravy that was inedible. On the whole it wasn't a good Sunday lunch 😒 Very poor!

Ordered a carvery takeaway for 17:00 but didn't arrive until 17:43. Food cold, had to microwave to heat it through. Order plated incorrectly- missing a meat that was ordered to child's meal, stuffing added to childrens meals instead of adults, poor portion of meat all round, very small scoop of mashed potatoes, yorkie puddings dry like a frisby. Overall, very disappointed and will not be repeating

BEWARE! Served with a £100 parking fine... Apparently there is an iPad at the front where you have to register your car! Would have been nice if someone from Toby Carvery had told us this, very poor and won't be going back.

They have cut down on the amount of meat they give you, food counter is nearly always got food over it, staff that serve you never happy, table are never properly cleaned or floor around tables, and know they have the cheek fining you when you legitimately park in a disabled bay, because they have a new check-in screen for your vehicle, euro carparks who know watch the carparks via cameras made 15.6 million last tax year, Toby carvery you are on your way out So you ask to try it again which we did yesterday 02/11/2024, all I can say is would never go again and would not recommend anyone to go there, we arrived at 3.50pm waited at the front desk after waiting about 3 or 4 minutes for a member of staff to greet us we were shown to our seats by a very miserable young guy who did not even wait until we say down before he asked if we would like drinks, we were sat next to a till point, by the time the guy turned around to put our drinks order in he had forgotten what we had ordered, all the staff looked miserable, we were not given any information by any staff member what to door what we were eating, carvery or menu, we went to the carvery counter and my 80 mother in law went before myself and my wife where she asked a very miserable young guy for her meat and asked if she could not have it to thick, he sliced 3 small pieces which were that thin you could see through them so she asked for some more and a bit thicker, he batted his eye and cut 2 more slices without even speaking to her, he then askedy wife whateat she would like, she asked if there was more lamb as all that was on the counter was a bone and a few scraps, he replied no there is no more left, then a female cook said it's in the oven cooking and won't be ready until 5pm so you will have to have something else. Myself and my wife had only gone in for the weekend lamb so decided not to eat at all which none of the kitchen staff seemed bothered about, I went back to our table while my wife helped her mum. I asked if there was a manager available to speak to I was told yes it's Charly, She came over and had already been informed why I wanted to speak to her as straight away she told me there was no more lamb until 5pm, she said it was because the lamb had been put in the oven late, I told her this was poor management and planning she replied, " that is your opinion", we had a bit more of a conversation but the whole time she just did not seem interested. We were given my mother in laws meal was given to her free which was only just warm as all the trays were stacked high and well above the heating point. Just to add the pub was very quiet aswell and staff just standing behind the bar, my mother in law has just moved to the old peoples bungalows across the road and when talking to some of her friends this morning she was told that 3 of them left there meals because of problems with the staff and food the first week it reopened. I have never seen this pub so quite on a Saturday evening and the food as poor. The refurbishment is very nice but I think the staff and management need a lot more training. Very very poor

Food was cold hard and just didn't taste nice

60 Dirty plates covered in yesterday's mushy peas (they expect you to eat off) and the worst breakfast I've ever seen, I can't say ate because it was so bad a few bites were enough to know this place isn't for me. The hash browns would've made for good construction material though, they had the hardness of a house brick. Edit: Thanks for responding but I'm complaining about the quality of your food, even if it was cooked properly it'd still be garbage quality wise. Are you able to change your suppliers and staff just to satisfy me? No your not, so it's pointless me contacting you.

Good food and generous portions friendly staff

The restaurant had not long re opened after being closed for a long time. It should have stayed closed! No ice cream, no decaff coffee and here's the best part....a table of 6 paid for our bill, a table of four!! How on earth the wait staff messed that up is beyond us. The manager was rude, obnoxious and expected us to pay a bill that wasn't broken down so we knew what we were being charged for. She stood and argued, yes argued with us for over 5 minutes before finally sorting the issue. Absolutely abysmal service, should not be allowed to stay open. Toby please feel free to contact us and we can go into further details and name and shame the manager!

To hot needs to turn the heating down, staff are rude and a bit indoctrinated, trying to charge me for an adult meal even tho I have had a kids meal. Also have told people that we cant have kids meals because we are over 11 years old. Food was sloppy but yorkies were nice!

Always a pleasant visit at Talke with delicious fresh food and now that the refurbishment has taken place it felt great to enjoy yet another meal in a lovely, fresh and welcoming environment. Looking forward to next time already!

Although it's closing for a refurb it should still have everything on the menu but it doesn't which is disappointing. Got charged twice for the carvery as well so had to faff about getting a refund.

Only have a 1 star because I couldn’t give 0. Absolutely terrible. Advertise that you do Yorkshire pudding for breakfast but bring 6 out in the hour that we were there

Turned up at 11.10am to be told they weren't serving food untill well after 12pm, no where does it state you dont serve food between 11am-12pm. We wasn't standing around for an hour so went elsewhere. You may also want to train your staff on how to talk to your customers because we were spoken to like they had stepped in something. Won't be returning. Ended up taking our business elsewhere that was serving food.

Great Toby Inn, food is great and lots of it, staff very welcoming and friendly, service is great, we use this branch all the time now for the breakfasts. We'll worth a visit.

Went for dinner with a mate, told by the manager over 30/35 minutes wait. So I had a drink at the bar, watched other walk-ins getting seated. Waited nearly 40mins when spoke to the manager his reply was "well you didn't make a reservation!" After a few words about being seated he was just rude! Very poor attitude towards myself. I could see they were short staffed but don't take it out on your customers. Be a while before I go again. Endon is much friendlier and helpful!!

This place is rubbish. Only two meat choices and we were told the beef was too fatty although it looked fine, seemed to only want to give you gammon. Got the tiniest amount of meat. Basically paying for a plate of veg. Avoid.

Just been for a King size carvery. Great food. Was going to knock a star off coz I'm way too full and sweating like a pig but that's probably my fault.

I left a few pigs in blankets and abit of Yorkshire pudding and devoured everything else plus the cider and coke zero were great.

Nice food and was seated straight away at 12:30 on a Sunday which was great, and unexpected without booking. Food was nice, the usual for a Toby Carvery. Staff seemed under a lot of pressure to turn over tables and it showed in the service towards the end. Otherwise good experience.

Very good place not busy at the time we went on Thursday after 1.00pm great service. had the roast the roast potatoes need work on not crispy and the yorkshire pudding need work on as well apart from that the meal was good .
