Great Indian restaurant. I went with a group of friends for a lovely evening meal after a jolly get together for a game. The food there was delicious, the owner and staff are lovely, despite the large number of us (9 people) there was no issue with a table accommodation and the service was that of lightening speed - I mean what's not to love. Definitely 5 star experience in my eyes.

Well this place was lucky to get two star rating from me. I went here with a friend for dinner, probably the worst curry I have ever had! The Lamb Samosas we had for starters were clearly from a trade cash & carry supplier and cooked from frozen, most definitely not worth the £4.50 price tag! As for the Lamb Curry which distinctively lacked pieces of lamb, I think there was around five small pieces. The madras sauce was dreadful, again this tasted like it was out of a tin and definitely not made in house by chef. My friend’s experience with his curry was even worse, ordering a prawn curry and was served up a shrimp curry. They changed it for a supposedly prawn curry which had three pieces of something but definitely appeared not be prawns! Seriously I have had better frozen curries from the well known frozen retailer. This restaurant’s quality of food has gone down hill rapidly! Maybe it’s time for a new chef Calcutta 16….

Our favourite Indian restaurant ever! Calcutta 16 serves exceptional Indian food. Excellent service and we always receive such a warm welcome. The restaurant is always very busy at the weekends year round. Our family favourite dishes are King prawn korma- HUGE prawns and gorgeous thick smooth sauce, Chicken tikka masala- all white breast meat and a delicious fragrant sauce, the chef’s special Lamb shaktari is amazing too (with a spicy kick). The naan breads are the best! Excellent value for money too. Highly recommend. Calcutta 16 is a must visit in Worthing!

Came with work friends for a birthday celebration. I have not eaten curry in a while so I do not really remember what I liked, but I know I do enjoy it. My friend recommended the biryani and I am so glad I listened to her (I had chicken dual biriyani for my main). It was delicious! Plain naan and a Cobra beer were great accompaniments too The appetizer of poppadoms with pickles was nice, I enjoyed the mango chutney. We then had a starter from the menu, I had the lamb kebab, not exactly sure what I was expecting but it came as a bit of a surprise, a lot spicier than I thought it would be too, but it was tasty. Desert was a mango sorbet, quite hard at first and not overly flavoursome as it was so frozen, but as it softened up the flavour became more apparent. In all a very nice meal and definitely one to be repeated! Highly reccomend Calcutta 16

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I would like to share the horrible experience I had with the place. I would like to specify this is definitely not an Indian restaurant so, none of the dishes I ordered had any Indian taste. First of all, it is mandatory in an Indian restaurant to serve water, or given the option of what water we would prefer. So, when I asked before leaving why we weren't served any water the server/owner (I think due to the attitude), he said customers get angry when they serve water without them asking and he also asked us if we like anything else and we didn't ask for water. Not only did he fail to admit that he forgot, he blames the customers. In India, customers are considered as God and water is always served first without being asked. Now, speaking of the food. We ordered masala dosa which is a popular South Indian meal. The dosa we were served was thinner than a tissue paper all the way, uncooked. It looks so big but, you can roll it into the size smaller than a golf ball. The potato filling was dry as if it was taken out of the freezer and stir fried. As for the so called chutneys, they looked more like sauces but, tasted mush worse. There was mustard seeds in the mint sauce, so the combination of the ingredients were all mixed. They have no idea what a proper Dosa chutney is. Next, I ordered an erachi fry which is a kerala beef fry dish. When I got home and opened it to have with my home made Parathas, the tin box had some pieces of meat which looked like it was soaked in a gravy and left to marinate, no aroma as there were hardly masala, probably some garam masala. I had to wash off the meat pieces and recook it. The aroma, colour and flavour was so much better. My friend who had joined me, also a South Indian had the same opinion of the dosa, so I'm sure it is not an individual view. She had ordered a Fish mulakkiyathu which I again a South Indian fish curry which is full of red chili flavour and lots of oil. But, what she got was a basic Bengali fish curry. I wish I could post pictures of what it looked like and how it should actually look let alone taste. But, I shall see if I can post them on a website that will accept pictures. All I would like to say is that if you are going to serve food that is not your delicacy atleast have the decency to learn how to prepare the dish correctly before you humiliate the dish. The people who are unaware of what the dish actually tastes will misunderstand our flavours forever.

I would like to share the horrible experience I had with the place. I would like to keep it short. First, we were not served water and when asked I was told that customers got angry for being served water and I didn't ask at the time I placed my order. Not an Indian custom. We ordered Masala Dosa which is a South Indian savoury pancake. It is usually thin and crispy but, the dosa we got were thinner than a tissue and not cooked. The potato filling looked like it was taken out of freezer and stir fried. Sauces were served as chutney and the ingredients were mixed. Chutneys served with dosas are mainly made with cocunut, mint and coriander for the green chutney, coconut, red chilies, mustard and curry leaves for the red chutney, coconut with dry roasted chickpea dal some coriander leaves for the white chutney. Takeaway erachi fry is a popular beef fry dish from Kerala. What I got was just meat pieces in a gravy which I had to wash off and recook. I have posted pics of both before and after. Beef fry is actually darker as it is well fried. My friend ordered fish mulakkiyathu which is a kerala fish curry steeped in red chili paste and oil. But, she got a basic Bengali fish curry. Please don't serve food as such as this is not how those dishes actually are. People deserve to experience the authentic dishes in its true flavour. So, please improvise the dishes and I will be grateful for that.

We went on a Tuesday evening for a quick vegetarian meal before the cinema. We were so very disappointed. From the Pappadoms to the onions in the salad to the veggies in the curries - all were tired and lacked any distinct flavour. The vegetable special (Kerela vegetable curry) was nothing really special at all! We were so excited about tasting the dhosa which was in fact greasy with a minuscule amount of filling! This is such a shame as we really like the food at the Shoreham branch.

This is a gem. We have found that in the last 6 months or so, most Indian takeaways have raised their prices dramatically. One example of this is many places charging over £3 for a plain naan. We had an impromptu visit to Calcutta 16 on Saturday night. After visiting the pub next door we headed over the road to the curry house. This was our first visit. We entered and warmly welcomed. Drinks order taken very swiftly and arrived in a flash. The menu has all the classic with a few of their own specials, that looked and sounded unique to them. One of which, despite not going for it, we saw on an adjacent table, their crispy pancake thing. Can’t remember the traditional Indian name but looked awesome with its filling. The food we enjoyed was very tasty and had their own way of cooking some of the classic dishes, which made it very tasty. The chicken in both curries ordered was the most tender pieces of chicken I’ve ever had a curry house. The curries where all of a high quality. We will be back again!

We moved here 6 months ago and this was the first Indian takeaway that we have ordered. Very pleased with the whole experience from ordering to delivery to eating.

Been here several times and never disappointed. Food is very tasty and menu different to other Indian restaurants nearby. Prices are reasonable, plenty of vegetarian/vegan. Toilets could be cleaner though.

My family have been using taste of bengal for 35 years+. Hard working family keeping consistency and reputation up. Tandoori butter chicken has been a family favourite over the decades and never fail
