Caffe Tirreno in Northumberland

We have been going to Caffe Tirreno for many years. First of all it was run by Roberto and then managed by Dora and then owned and run by Dora. She is without doubt the star of the show. The hospitality is excellent and so is the food. This is a place we just keep going back to. The prices are incredible as well, offering amazing value. We ate here today 21.1.24 for the second time this month and I know we will visit many more times throughout the year. Thank you x.

Worth coming to Alnwick just to eat here. The best pizzas ever and a cheesecake so light and delicious. Forget the castle, just come here for a meal. Staff are so friendly too.

Lovely dinner pre show at the Playhouse. The pate starters was rich and delicious and the calzone pizza excellent, we also tried the crab linguine from the special board, and that was lovely too.

Stumbled upon this lovely restaurant. Nice staff, lovely food and good prices. Couldn’t fault the service, from all the team. Left my hat in there and they chased me down the street ( in the snow) to give it back. Food was hot, and tasteful. Service was punctual and attentive.

This restaurant was fully occupied when we arrived in hope. They phoned us half an hour later and we went back to have a lovely meal served by helpful friendly staff. We also had a bottle of a delicious Sicilian wine.

Great restaurant, doesn't take bookings, but still busy. Goats cheese starter was particularly good. Creamy risotto and good sized pizza Baileys cheesecake very nice - could have been bigger!! Complimentary limoncello Pleasant, friendly staff

This place has a great atmosphere and good service. The food is good, and reasonably priced. The only drawback is that you cannot book a table, and it gets very busy around 6.30pm.

Great little restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere, and authentic Italian food. They don't take reservations so top tip is to get there early.

We arrived , an odd number, and were quickly and easily accommodated. Staff were friendly, helpful , and efficient, making it a very happy experience. The large calzone type dish was signed in olive oil, like an artist's signature- very smart! The vegetarian risotto was excellent The panna cotta and tiramisu were a huge hit! It will be a very good memory for years to come

We came across this restaurant by chance, coming from Alnwick castle on a windy, rainy day and before we set off for home. I was with my two teenage children on holiday. The service was attentive and the food wonderful. It’s one of the nicest restaurants I’ve eaten in for a very long time. There was a wide range of choices, we all had different things and thoroughly enjoyed. Would highly recommend.

This is a fantastic Italian restaurant. The food is delicious and the staff are really friendly and efficient. You need to book however as it is very popular. Well worth a visit.

Came back for a revisit after last year's holiday. Sharing platter was lovely, with olives, dipping breads, homemade dough balls. Vegetarian risotto as deliciousas before and kids meals super value and great pizzas. Tiramisu light as anything, but the real star was the amazing cherry choc chip ice cream.Staff as friendly and attentive as ever, a must visit but book to guarantee a place, as was fully booked!

We ate out here on the last evening of our holiday and it was probably the best eating experience of our stay in the north. The food was good and reasonably priced, but it was the staff that made the evening - very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable without being overpowering. We were all very glad we'd managed to book here. The restaurant is quite small so it's essential to book as it was fully booked on the evening we went. If you're really hungry it's probably worth ordering a few sides as the dishes were leaning towards the smaller side. I'd definitely eat here again if I lived in the area.

We visited this place after trying to find somewhere which had gluten free options for our 7 year old. My wife asked if they could do anything for her, and the lady was confident from the start (very reassuring), and was aware of Coeliac Disease. My daughter had a vegetarian risotto and she loved it! I had a Calzone and my wife other kids all had pizza, all of which were outstanding. If we come back to Alnwick again, we will be sure to visit here again.

We ate here three times last week, the fact that we kept going back says it all.Had booked for two nights before we headed north and was so pleased we had. Relieved they could squeeze us in for a third visit.Lovely food, great staff, what more could you ask.

Fortunately we booked ahead for our meal (make sure you book ahead as it is very popular) thank goodness we did as it was delicious and everything tasted freshly made. Staff were friendly and service good. The (home made) desserts were scrumptious! Well worth a visit when in Alnwick.

Fortunately we booked ahead, as the restaurant is small and was fully booked. We expected ‘average’ Italian food, but we got really very good food - unexpectedly good. Excellent pasta with formaggio sauce, excellent crespelles. Friendly (slightly eccentric) service. We would go back! The table next to us were booking again… recommend +++

Great food, kind, helpful staff who took us in, two dripping wet cyclists, and gave us time to sort ourselves out, dry off and eat and drink lovely food and wine :)

The food we had was fine ( chicken in a nice sauce and a pizza) but the service was not great. We had prebooked but it was an hour after our arrival before we had our meals which, especially under the current pandemic situation, was not acceptable. We spoke to a young server who was pleasant, and she did take 10% off our bill, but we would much rather have paid the full price and been served at the right time. We were told that it would have been better if we'd ordered a starter as that can be provided more quickly. She also said they had just a small kitchen so were very busy. In the current Covid climate, and if the kitchen cannot cope, then fewer bookings should surely have been taken. We knew and accepted that some dishes take 20 minutes to cook, but we had been seated for an hour before our meal came. The place was too busy.

Decided to hide from the rain and treat ourselves to lunch. Gorgeous meal. I had caprese starter - lovely mozzarella my husband the potato skins - huge portion. Both had spaghetti bolognese / v authentic and delicious. Finally wonderful ice cream. A thoroughly enjoyable 3 course meal with coffee and one drink each for £50. Fantastic! The staff - delightful and the service was very good. All in all a great lunch - thank you!

We recently visited Alnwick for the day as part of our holiday and were wandering around the town when we seen this place and decided to stop for a late lunch. The food was really tasty and the portion sizes spot on. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and made sure everything was ok with our meal. Lots of hand gel on each table and at the entrance too for covid prevention. If I visit Alnwick again I will definitely be returning

This is what would be called a Mom ‘n Pop restaurant, which for Italian food is exactly what you want. Smallish restaurant, great menu, great service, great ambience. Excellent menu backed up by a really good specials board. The food is clearly all made in their own kitchen - even the Baileys and chocolate cheesecake. The bruschetta starters, one hot & spicy the other with goat’s cheese, were delicious. Main courses, one pasta with spicy sausage sugo and the other lamb chops with salad, were outstanding. The puddings were to die for. Every single thing was five star. Oh, very nice house wine.

True Italian hospitality, paired with delicious food - Cafe Tirreno is a fantastic visit for a taste of a Trattoria, with a wide ranging menu of delicious, varied items. Some of the best Italian food I’ve had in the UK!

Food is really lovely here. The staff are very friendly and are doing a great job with social distancing and keeping everyone safe. We had takeaway, and it was great to have such a tasty meal cooked for our family. I am coeliac, so very much sensitive to gluten and have had no problems eating here. I definitely recommend.

The food was delicious, service perfect and they were very respectful of Covid rules on distancing etc. We felt very comfortable eating there. It was a very good dining experience. We look forward to visiting again. Joanne and Andy.

We popped in on a cold evening to order a couple of takeaway pizzas and were delighted with them. They stayed hot and fresh despite a rainy walk back to our Airbnb flat (about 10 mins) and we had to stop ourselves from going back the night after for more! This will be our first port of call next time we're in Alnwick, hopefully eating in next time. The staff were lovely and obviously do their best to give everyone a good experience- they deserve to be busy and will hopefully ride out the next few tricky months.

We were staying in Alnwick one night so checked the reviews for this restaurant before our visit. Due to Covid precautions it is very difficult to get a table so booking is a must.The owner was kind enough to send a menu with gluten-free options marked, which was really helpful.The food was fabulous. Lots of lovely big prawns in a delicious sauce and a lovely bottle of wine to go with it.The staff were lovely and the service was great.Highly recommended.

Loved having lunch at Cafe Tirreno. Covid protocols taken very seriously and lovely woman that served us was charming and efficient. Delicious italian food served simply and beautifully. Would really recommend.

We were so lucky to get a table at this restaurant. You will need to book as they turn away lots of people who arrive without a reservation. Great owner and staff, good prices and fab food. I had the king prawns in a spicy sauce. Lots of prawns, big portion sizes and very tasty. A great choice. Can't believe its not higher rated on trip advisor. Should be No.1 Recommended.

This was a real find. Very small, and because of Covid, even smaller with only 14 covers when we went. They even offered to call us if a table became available earlier which they did. Really kind and typical of the excellent service. I had pasta linguine which was stunning as was my wife's chicken. Followed naturally by some really excellent coffee. They have a nice wine list with some well priced house wine but we had a white Sicilian which was very good. If I lived in Alnwick I think I would have a permanent table! I just hope they survive so please do support if you are there.

Ate here twice this visit and it was excellent , the two girls running the place were friendly and helpful at all times.Best Covid precautions I have seen any where , you are met at the door precisely on your booking time and shown to your table , contact details are taken on arrival.Each table has a buffer table attached to it which means that staff do not have to lean over diners to deliver meals , a superb idea !! Food is freshly made and absolutely delicious - try the Calzone pizza if you have a good appetite !All in all a brilliant place to eat , we will be back next year

Fortunately, we had pre-booked as this restaurant only has 5 tables available due to social distancing. They were still offering a take away menu too. Covid safe measures were very evident from the hand sanitiser through to distancing. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a specials and desserts board. I enjoyed a chicken dish whilst my husband had a pizza. The food was freshly cooked to order and served piping hot. I particuarly enjoyed the blue cheese sauce with my chicken. We felt the pizza would have benefitted from a little more topping. The tiramisu is scrumptious too. We had the added advantage of 'Eat out to help out' so this was a 'bargain' meal with good quality, freshly cooked food.

We are holidaying locally and went this evening for a meal at Cafe Tirreno. The meal was excellent. Very friendly helpful staff, delicious food, home made puddings (make sure you leave room to sample these). Really good portion sizes. The kids were welcomed as much as the rest of the family. In addition, the restaurant has made adaptions to comply with all things COVID. Highly recommended.

We took advantage of the eat out to help out scheme whilst on holiday in the area. The restaurant is well set out for safe dining and the staff take cleanliness very seriously. We had starters and mains and the quality of food was excellent. The two ladies serving were very attentive and friendly, providing a very good service. Due to the offer, the bill was very cheap, but we will have no hesitation to go back on another occasion at normal price.

No wheelchair access and very bad Lasagne. The other dishes were great. It was sad that a member of our party spent the evening in pain as she could not use her wheelchair and did not want to disappoint the family by making a fuss. Yes it costs a bit to adapt a place; but everyone should be worth the effort.

We came here for an early evening meal and it’s one of the best places we have been to for Covid awareness. Lots of space and sanitiser! Service was excellent and the pizzas were delicious. It was nice to have the option of a smaller pizza to make room for desserts. I recommend the tiramisu and the Panama cotta. Excellent limoncello too.

Managed to book a table during our stay in Alnwick. Covid restrictions made everything so difficult but the staff were tremendous, everything very, very clean and the food was excellent. Such a shame that our accommodation just around the corner was so poor.

Great little Italian Restraunt coping brilliantly during covid. We had calamari to start which was lovely and crisp. My partner had a crab special and I had the tagliatelle di la mare. We both cleaned our plates for me my sauce was rich but not overpowering and the clams and prawn s soft and succulent. For pudding we had panacotta with rose ice cream and vanilla cheesecake with raspberries. Both home made and excellent. Attentive service and a good selection of Italian wine. Highly recommend but phone ahead to book.

We have just had an excellent meal tonight at this gem of a restaurant. All the family enjoyed it. I had the best steak Diane I have ever tasted - top quality and perfectly cooked. My family were full of praise for the panacotta and baileys and chocolate cheesecake. Very good value and excellent service.

Visited Cafe Tirreno twice for dinner during our holiday break in Alnwick.We managed to get a booking on the first night they reopened, 13th July. Our meal was so good we immediately booked for a second night. Cafe Tirreno was spotlessly clean, with the staff handling the covid19 situation very professionally, with good systems and processes in place. We were most comfortable on both visits and never felt at risk at any time.Food freshly prepared and piping hot.

Staying in Alnwick for the week and managed to get a table on the first night of opening after lockdown.The staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic too, we all really enjoyed our meal. Pizzas were delicious, as was the vegetarian risotto. A lovely atmosphere in the cosy restaurant. So glad we managed to get a table, would recommend.

We enjoyed the meal. Bruschetta to start,pizza for main all tasty,authentic and plentiful. Dessert of chocolate and baileys panacotta which was delicious. The house red was too dry. Staff great and ambience ok,very busy place.

If you like Italian food at a reasonable price you must visit cafe Tirreno! The service is excellent and the food exceptional. We have never had a bad meal.

Very average meal. Pizza seemed to be shop bought base with minimal toppings added in house. Roast potatoes seemed to have been cooked and re heated to order making them hardly appetising. They had also ran out of chips. Service was ok but nothing special.

Enticed by the excellent reviews we braved Storm Dennis to make it here. It started so well - friendly welcome, good atmosphere but that’s where it ends. Seated at our table we waited and waited for someone to take our order or offer us a drink. We then waited .... and waited .... and waited ... for one hour and ten minutes for our starter. Around us we could see other diners also becoming frustrated by the poor service.Our starters were tomato garlic bread - whilst the topping was tasty the only way to describe the bottom was to coin Mary Berry’s phrase “a soggy bottom” as sadly it was under cooked.Our young waitress then asked us if “Everything was ok” - I get the feeling she won’t be asking other customers that again in a hurry! Frustrated that we were now one hour and thirty minutes into our visit I queried the wait only to be told that “We cook everything from scratch” (If that was the case why couldn’t my daughter have chillies added to her sauce?) and “Well you did order a starter”When the food arrived - three bowls of tomato pasta and one carbonara it was ok. Nothing special but nothing dreadful either - and the manager did come and apologise. But sadly it just felt a little too late. Perhaps if they had been more attentive and aware from the start things would have been different but we won’t be back!

Although they don't take reservations, the staff try to accommodate. On arrival the staff were so friendly, we were served quickly with drinks and our food order was taken. I ordered carbonara, and I swear it was the best I've ever had!! We didn't have dessert only because couldn't manage it, but I saw what other tables had ordered and they looked amazing. I will definetly be back. Staff were brilliant and the chef is outstanding...thank you xx

We came here on a January Thursday evening. There was an extensive selection of dishes on the menu but we both chose pizza. They were huge delicious and well cooked, probably the best restaurant pizza I have had. Staff were cheerful, friendly and chatty. Well worth a visit.

I have been to Cafe Tirreno many times and it never fails to impress. The food is absolutely fantastic and the staff are the best. Very reasonable prices. This is our favourite Italian and we have visited Italian restaurants in many countries, including of course Italy. This is the very best and you cannot get better. 100 percent perfection in every way. Brilliant service every time. I cannot recommend this little gem enough. I encourage anyone to give a try. You will not be disappointed.

I am not used to go to italian restaurant outside the Italian border. However, having some time to spend in the afternoon I decided to have a break here. I found a very good cappuccino and a marvelous panna cotta with Baileys and icecream. Very charm atmosphere and a real Eros Ramazzotti soundtrack. In conclusion a small Italian cafe in this England corner where feeling to be at home

Whenever in Alnwick, my family and I choose to dine at Café Tierro, the food is always fresh and delicious and a warm welcome guaranteed. Top marks, 11/10!!

This is our favourite local restaurant and not just for the food (although it’s always great). Everyone is so friendly, the place is cosy and has a lovely, lively atmosphere. No matter how busy they are it is definitely worth waiting for.

Amazing as always, the service is fantastic and the food is perfect. We have never had a bad meal and try and visit at least once a month.

Called into Cafe Tirreno for tea/early supper when we were attending the lantern parade on a chilly and very wet day. We both had delicious pasta dishes, hot, tasty and very reasonably priced. The cafe was pretty busy with locals and call ins like us. The deserts were superb and home made - fabulous cheesecake wow!

With a rustic Italian taverna feel, Caffe Tirreno was busy with regulars and walk-in customers. The staff was very friendly although the service was relatively laid-back. Good menu and special selection. Food was very enjoyable.

You can't book k but we were lucky to get a table straight away. The Tortellini special was wonderful and the chocolate orange Panna cotta, devine.

Lovely food, very friendly staff. There wasn't a table when we arrived, hadn't booked, so they suggested we went to the pub next door & they came & got us when there was one free

Started out ok, reasonable starter but the problems began after my main meal of pasta was delivered, sauce was ok but the penne was undercooked and rubbery, typical of when Pasta is previously par-boiled . I brought this to the attention of a waitress who said the penne was al-dente to which I replied I prefer my pasta al dente but this isn't, its underdone, cue a couple of minutes later and the lady owner arrived at the table clearly unhappy to tell me that the penne served was al dente to which I disagreed , now I am of Italian heritage and have literally eaten pasta hundreds if not thousands of times and I know what al dente pasta texture is like but I was told in no uncertain terms that I don't know what al dente is , that I don't know what Im talking about , after I begged to differ, I was met with a volley of Italian which clearly was not complimentary, the meal was changed but the new one which came to my table was exactly the same !

Small informal family friendly restaurant. It isn’t possible to book so be prepared to wait for a table if they are busy. Service is quite relaxed, so not a good idea if you are in a hurry. We loved it and went back a second time.

Great Italian food at this cosy little restaurant. Everything is freshly cooked from scratch and very reasonably priced. Staff very friendly and although they don’t take bookings they will phone you to let you know when a table is free. Definitely recommend vegetarian spinach and ricotta cannelloni made with pancakes instead of pasta. Plenty of choice for non vegetarians too. Super food and equally excellent staff. They don't take table bookings but will come and fetch you from the next door pub when the table is ready. Happy days.

Staying at Alnwick Lodge and was told this was a good place to eat. Visited Alnwick gardens and castle and then found this place within walking distance. Really great food and reasonable prices. Would recommend and will revisit next time we are up in Northumberland.

You can't book this restaurant, which we found out to nearly our cost. Go in, place your name on the list if there's no tables, have a drink in a nearby pub, and they will call you when your table becomes available.

Lovely food at a reasonable price. Fabulous Tiramisu, which was home made and the best I have had. Well worth a visit if you can get a table.

Called in on spec and had to wait a while as it was packed. Worth the wait though. Staff were lovely and the food was well above average. All our meals were delicious Would recommend and will come back when in the area !

Tipped by a local we ended up in this very nice restaurant. Service from the sort you read about, but never encountered. Will probably not scale to big crowds, but hope you all experience such kindness and resourcefullness. Food was excellent, we had lasagna and some bruschettas. It was fast and fairly priced.

We visited this restaurant on our last dinner in Alnwick. There isn't a lot of choices in Alnwick, but this one seemed like a good choice.

Sat for ten minutes before ordering drinks and food a further ten minutes no drinks.I am happy to wait for food but basic restaurant craft is serve the drinks quickly.Keep your customers happy and with you and maybe sell more drinks.Food in the end was adequate a little disappointing after positive reviews previously.

The pizza and the pasta were both good. The pizzas serve one adult. The staff were pleasant and the food was ready quickly.

We visited this restaurant on a Monday evening and it was full. We were asked to take a seat and a table would be ready in 5 minutes. The staff were attentive but not intrusive. The food was very fresh and although we had to wait a while between courses as they were very busy it was worth it. We will go back when we next visit Alnwick.

I saw good reviews of this restaurant on Trip Advisor before we visited Alnwick. Our cotttage was less than 5 minutes away so we called in. It was only 6.45pm but it was full. The lady said we could either wait or if we wished try an adjacent bar and someone would come for us. Last time we had encountered this approach was in the USA.

My wife and I visited this restaurant on the recommendation of a couple of people in the town. It was simply dreadful. Given that the menu stated that everything was freshly made, my wife asked for pasta with chicken and mushroom (all ingredients were on the menu). She was told they couldn’t prepare this and so she ordered the standard chicken fungi (which is on the menu) and a side of plain pasta rather than veg/chips. When the food arrived she was scorned by the waitress who told her that this was exceptional and would not be repeated and to not ask for it again! We are still trying to work out what was exceptional as both items were standard on the menu. The chicken was terribly dry and the sauce was greasy and insipid, the pasta was standard supermarket fayre. I had the diavola pizza which was undercooked and the base sloppy. The garlic bread with cheese was also sloppy and the base undercooked. The bottle of beer was very nice.

We turned up on spec on Thursday evening and the restaurant was already pretty full. We were told there should be a table ready in about 30 minutes and they took our mobile number to ring us when it was available. They rang just as we were heading back in through the door. We found the service was attentive and not intrusive. We both had cannelloni - one meat and one from the specials board which was vegetarian - both were very good. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and would come here again. A good little Italian restaurant.

what a delight to find such an Italian Café in Alnwick.. Unassuming on the outside but warm and welcoming. Such amazingly good food, fairly simple but delicious. Service excellent. Thanks you so much - we will be recommending you and we will certainly be back.
