I love this wee authentic Italian cafe, great for grabbing a bite to eat and coffee and watching the world go by. Nice coffees, fantastic bakery food and the meals are tasty and proper homemade with fresh incredients.

Scottish/Italian food. We made a last minute decision to eat here because the menu looked nice. We were not disappointed. It has a small, cosy setting. Really friendly staff and lovely food. We both had the Potato and ham soup with crusty bread followed by spinach, beetroot and goats cheese salad with balsamic dressing. All of which was delicious and made for a substantial meal. My only criticism would be that although the coffee had nice flavour it was very strong and let down by being served with cold milk.

Fantastic food and service with ample portions which was important to my young adult son. We returned the next day for breakfast despite our hotel offering breakfast and dozens of other cafes nearby in Edinburgh. Simply couldn't beat the service and the food, coffee and tea quality. Tried tasty eggs, bacon, yogurt granola, eggs Benedict and scones - all delicious . Give this fabulous cafe a try.

I have been a regular at Lucano's Kitchen for years and never failed to be impressed by the food or service, however since the facelift and menu changes the quality has gone downhill dramatically. What used to be authentic Italian now feels like commercial chain Italian and the service was not only slow but often incorrect bringing the wrong drinks and not bothering to open the wine or pour it once delivering it to the table. What used to be one of my favorite spots is now far from special and a major disappointment to my return to Edinburgh after some time away. Will sadly not return.

I have been a fairly regular customer at this cafe over the last 15 years and have always thought highly of the place. From taking my children in for a milkshake before going to the museum to having a tasty spicy sausage roll for a quick bite, the standards and service were very high. I popped in today (first time in the last 6 months I'd say) and I saw that it has been refurbished - this is not an improvement. It has utterly lost it's charm. There was also a distinct smell coming from the toilets. I ordered two tuna melt sandwiches and to be honest, I felt I had been robbed judging by the standard of the food that appeared before me. They had used cheap supermarket basic bread, spooned some tuna onto it along with a shop bought cheese slice put it in a panini warmer for a minute and that was it. It was limp, soft, under cooked and just plain nasty - there were browning, UNWASHED salad leaves and onion slices on the side which I declined to eat. Along with two diet cokes, I paid £16 for this!? I'm unlikely to pop back in now - what a shame.

Staff were very lazy and just cleared tables, didn't clean them. I ordered soup yet no spoon arrived before or after it was served. Used to be a regular visitor (on and off for six years) when under old management and was an excellent place to go for a coffee. However, since recent facelift has rather gone down hill, especially in terms of customer service. Visiting today, was practically harassed into ordering then quickly bundled out as clearly seem to be more interested in getting festival visitors through the door and to top it all off, was openly criticised by the person on the till for not leaving a tip!If you are looking for a coffee in this area, there are a number of far better alternatives where as a customer you will actually feel welcomed (the nearby National Library cafe, The Elephant House and Black Medicine, located at the other end of Chambers Street are excellent alternatives). I personally will not be returning to this place and I would advise people to give it a wide berth.

Went there for lunch today and the venue looked promising but after sitting down we soon noticed the staff was untrained and uncoordinated. I have never reviewed anything on Tripadvisor as terrible or poor until we had the misfortune to visit this place for lunch. In between shows at the Fringe wee stopped here for lunch. My wife and I both chose a sandwich, tuna & cheese and grilled veg & cheese. Both were advertised as having salad. We both chose brown bread but expected something other than ordinary sliced bread. The salad was simply a couple of very wilted and unappealing bits of lettuce, which my wife refused to touch. The tuna was very dry, with no mayonnaise in sight and I can't even mention the very small square of very thin and tasteless cheese that didn't fill the bread or the fact that it wasn't even properly melted. If we had had time we would have sent it back and walked out. For £5.45 this was a terrible excuse of a sandwich. My wifes sandwich was equally unpleasant. On a positive note the coffee was good. Needless to say we won't be going back.

She brings the coffee anyway - with the bill. Appreciate it was the first night of the Edinburgh Fringe but that surely wasn't a surprise to them?

The bar staff looked extremely stressed and there was such a hectic atmosphere that we just assumed the drinks were on their way. A long while later we had to call someone over to ask and they looked at us bemused as to why we would want drinks. It turned out that the waitress had not placed our drinks or food order - disaster! I am not one for complaining and I wouldn't unless it was necessary but when you have to send a glass of wine back because there's a dead fly on the rim of your glass and when someone else in your party gets a burnt dish? It's not exactly good is it? With both these complaints all we got was an "oh sorry" and they replaced the glass of wine and the burnt dish. The food was actually pretty good but what an inconvenience having to complain not once but twice.Wouldn't recommend and wouldn't return I'm afraid.

I would especially recommend the pasta amatriciana which is something really special. I also think they make their own fresh pasta! It's fairly priced, and they have a special menu where you can get 2 courses for £12 which actually makes it really quite affordable - most of the main dishes they serve are on the special menu as well. The staff are always friendly and attentive. I usually go on a Friday afternoon for lunch, it can sometimes be a bit busy at that time with lots of people who work in area going so it can be good to call ahead.

I've stopped here for lunch on my last three visits to Edinburgh. It's always busy but one can generally find a seat within minutes. The service is always prompt and there is a good choice of food on the menu. I tried the vegetarian risotto which was excellent whilst my wife had a full breakfast. The kids menu is pizza or pasta and comes with ice cream as well. The coffee is lovely and one can have a beer or wine too. The location is good as it is close to the National Museum. A lovely vibe and a warm welcome as always.

I loved Edinburgh, don't get me wrong, but as a foodie who has travelled the world and found places selling great food everywhere, I noticed a distinct lack of this in Edinburgh. Luckily Caffe Lucano saved the day with the best coffee I could find in this city and some truly good food.We ate Seafood Chowder (see pic) which in itself isn't chowder but actually seafood soup very typical of Italian coastal towns and tasted great. We drank chocolate milkshake and their own blood orange drink which was really zesty and refreshing (see pic).Poached eggs on toast (see pic) were perfectly cooked - I mean PERFECT. Gooey egg yolk with a solid outside which the toast mopped up nicely. Eggs Benedict (see pic) was the best my dining partner ever had - Hollandaise Sauce was delicious. We ended with coffee (see pic) and with the food so good we ordered a Tiramisu (see pic) which has got little chocolate curls throughout to give it a chocolate crunch taste. This adds another delicious dimension to traditional Tiramisu which made this one the best ever eaten anywhere in the world. Thank goodness for their strong Italian heritage.Lots of Italians eating here too - always a good sign.

We jumped in here as it was near to our hotel - just arrived in Edinburgh and famished so needed a quick coffee and a sandwich before setting out to discover the city. As always, soon as we'd finished eating, we found a number of better cafes within just a street or two away. Nothing wrong with is place, it is what it looks like, a street cafe. We've heard that it ups it's game come the evening when it's more of a full Italian restaurant but I can't comment on that.

We came here on a Friday night and it wasn't completely packed, which was perfect. Had a nice table by the front window, so we enjoyed the atmosphere! Shared a nice bottle of wine and started with an appetizer of mussels and clams.. amazing! Huge portion for that and our main entrees. I had the carbonara while my fiancé had the risotto on special. Both were delicious and fresh!! We were full so we didn't try any dessert but would love to have dinner here again.

I was brought the wrong coffee, and not the brownie I had ordered to go with it, until I asked again. When it arrived it was terrible. I then had to ask twice for a glass of tap water. The service wasn't very friendly either. Edinburgh is full of lovely places for tea or coffee, so I will not be returning.

I visited here for the first time for breakfast. After being completely ignored initially by the staff and having to get our own menus we eventually were able to order the food. It was very basic and I felt poor quality considering the price - not great value for money at all. In addition, the food came piled on top of each other, so everything came covered in egg including the bread - I feel this is poor as it meant the toast became soggy and I was unable to butter it. The staff were rude throughout. I will not be back.

Precios acordes. Recomendable.

We popped in her for a spot of lunch before heading of to the Royal Mile for some touristy things and I it was absolutley lovely here. The staff were friendly and welcoming and gave us the list of specials which were very tempting as was the whole menu. The drinks arrived quickly as did the food.I had the Big and Beefy Ciabatta and this was gorgeous the steak was cooked just right and was still tender and the ciabatta wasn't drowning in balsamic vinegar as I've had in some places. My friend with me had a pulled pork ciabatta and wouldn't even let me try some she like it so much.Overall I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys these lovely Italian flavours and perfectly cooked meat that is tender and succulent. The service is excellent and I couldn't fault the staff at all. I will be going back!

Wow this place is a hidden gem! We came to Lucano's on a recommendation and it was the best night of our visit. The place was bustling but the waiters made room even though we were quite early. They were cheeky and comfortable and made for a fun atmosphere from the start. The best part of all was the food. The menu was creative (haggis ravioli!) but still had the basics - we had a mixture. You could tell the pasta was made that day (we checked afterward); it was truly heaven - well worth the carbs! The other ingredients were simple but bang on! Try the veg magliato - not a typical choice but an amazing surprise. The bruschetta was probably the freshest I've had in a long time. We couldn't finish only because of the large servings (not for lack of trying - we stayed a while!) then a glass of limoncello sealed the deal for a memorable night. Definitely going back to try that ravioli...It's rustic, a little quirky and definitely what I remember from those tasty trattorias in Umbria. Even better!

Had a nice lunch here. My partner had the cauliflower soup, which was really tasty. My cheese and onion toasty was nice but a little too much onion for my liking, however it was really tasty. Nice lunch spot, apart from some creepy people outside staring as us through the window whilst we ate and trying to take pictures (not a reflection on the restaurant).

We had a great family meal here on a Saturday night. We started with the Italian Sharing Board of tasty morsels. We had between us the amatriciana, pear risotto, carbonarra and a house special. The panna cotta dessert went down particularly well. The pasta is home made and the food is genuine Italian and served with a flourish. Thank you!

I had one of the best meals of my life at Lucano's Kitchen. I almost didn't go, because Italian food has become so ubiquitous that it's easy to take for granted. But I gave it a try, because it was a cold Christmas Even night and I was by myself and it looked warm and welcoming inside. And it was. And that was just the beginning. At the waiter's suggestion I ordered haggis ravioli with whiskey and cheddar. It could have gone terribly wrong, but it didn't - it went very, very, very right! A perfect marriage of Scottish and Italian traditions in one dish. The ravioli are homemade, and they are laid on a bed of mashed parsnip and sprinkled with sharp aged cheddar. It's a generous portion, but I ate it all. I had to. I don't know when I'll ever have food that good again.

It's always interesting to see how a place undertake changes after a new owner takes over. However, Lucano's Kitchen seems to go in the righ direction: With a philosophy based on bring fresh local products in & elaborate their own homemade pasta their are setting up the pillars to be one of the best Italian Restaurants in town! If you are bored of finding the same repetitive menus over and over again when you eat Italian out just give Lucano's a go: Italian recipes with twist, several daily specials, homemade pasta, a delicate tratment of risotto and also a nice selection of meat & seafood! What could I say about the staff? Under Giovanni's supervision you will find a staff more than pleased to accomodate your needs in order to provide you a charming and familiar experience on the premises. Just let yourself to be recommended by them and bforget about formalities! My only "but"? I miss a wider wine selection that matches the quality of the gastronomic offer!

Caffe Lucano is a small restaurant on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh. But the food is simply excellent, fresh ingredients well cooked - the mushroom risottos we had at lunchtime were delicious. Specials on the chalk board also looked worth trying. We were so impressed with the food and service that we went back after our prolonged visit to the photography exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland which is just round the corner, and the coffee and orange polenta cake was also excellent. There are better known names on George IV Bridge, but it's difficult to pass Lucano's without eampling what they have to offer

We went there for breakfast on two successive days. The vegetarian breakfast and the bacon roll were delicious and very filling. We went back in the evening for an amazing portion of salmon with avocado and cream chees/ salad, followed by great pasta with clams and gnocchi. The tiramisu was homemade and tasty. The restaurant is under stated but well worth a visit for breakfast lunch or evening meal,- in the old town near to Greyfriar's Bobby

I had lunch at Caffe Lucano on Sept 25. I ordered a cherry tomatoes and rocket pizza and I shared a focaccia and olives with my friend. It all was really tasty, the closest to authentic Italian food I had so far in Edinburgh - and I do not say that often! Service was also great, and prices ok. Would definitely recommend to both tourists and locals.
