Cafe Under The Spire in Gateshead

i attended with my parents and sister for my mums birthday lunch as this was the church that my mother was christened at. the location is very good, with beautiful views of the tyne and surrounding areas. When you go inside you can see a lot of effort has been made with the decor, which is very well done. we were met with friendly helpful staff. we went at lunchtime, and it was relatively quiet and were quickly shown to our table. my parents both ordered the burger and chips, my sister the margarita pizza and i ordered the salmon salad, which the waitress gushed at as it was her go to for herself. the food arrived in decent time, and all was well for a time. while initially we enjoyed our food, i realised, after i'd eaten the salady parts of my meal first leaving the salmon until last that while the fish was cooked on the outside, it was raw on the inside. i had eaten 2 or 3 bites before i realised this, and when i saw how pink it was (akin to a steak cooked rare), i felt very queasy and lost my appetite. fortunately i had not eaten enough to cause any stomach problems. it is such a pity; had it been cooked through i'd have given 5 stars. and to pre-empt the obvious question "why didn't you say anything?" - i would not have trusted any attempt to fix the issue given the gravity of the error. for balances sake, the other meals were cooked well and enjoyed.

This is a lovely cafe hidden away in a church. The staff make you feel so welcoming and are very friendly, not like the rendezvous cafe in whitley bay. Coffees cakes sandwiches and small mealsl like burgers and pizzas on offer and at the same prices as other outlets. Very comfortable and very different. Didn't want to leave. Will be going back. It supposed to be a birthday lunch in a beautiful place and it went absolutely terrible .. We didn't get drinks in the same time and even worse than that our meals arrived separately with a BIG GAP of time... I ended up upset and in tears when leaving this place as it ABSOLUTELY ruined our special meal in a very special day. I will never come back...

After reading good reviews regarding Vegan cake options, we decided to walk 45mins to get there and try it out. On arrival we were told that there were No Vegan cakes, despite it being a Saturday and had one been oped 30mins. Tea and coffee didn't taste good, so were left. Will not be back !

I attended here with my wife and dog. The decor is beautiful and quirky. The staff were incredibly welcoming to us both and our dog. They were helpful and seemed to enjoy working there, which is always an encouraging sign. The coffee’s were lovely, a very tasty flat white and our food - hot beef sandwich and poached eggs on sourdough were both really tasty. We will definitely return soon!

Lovely quirky place, but food is poor and over priced and service was adequate. There were 5 of us for Sunday lunch, the table they sat us at was cramped and uncomfortable - in hind sight we should have asked to be moved. The only choices were the types of meat - but one person asked for chips instead of mash - they put the chips on the wrong plate. The roasted vegetables were over cooked and the boiled vegetables were nearly raw. The gravy had a taste of masala, which was weird and very off putting. At £15.00 per meal it was totally over priced for what it was - it was not value for money at all. I have been here a number of time for coffee - but never tried the food and was very disappointed.

My sister took me and my sisters for the first time, she said you've been here before, she said you got married here, I couldn't believe it. This place is brilliant, great staff, which you get the VIP treatment every time. The food if fantastic, and has a great ambiance. This is now our happy place.

I’ve visited here twice now and absolutely love it. It’s really like no other place I’ve visited - an absolutely beautiful building (old church) renovated tastefully with some beautiful pieces d’art throughout. Food is lovely - a little different but very nice. We stuck to snacks - toasties first time and scrambled egg on toast the following visit. I understand they’re branching out and doing weddings too. Lovely place!

Went for lunch with my daughter,I ordered scrambled eggs on toast, a simple enough dish to make I would have thought,it was tasteless ,the eggs were overcooked and smelled fishy ,for £8 I expected more , I won’t be back.

I’d been wanting to visit for years and finally decided to go and try their evening food. The atmosphere inside, whilst really quiet, was breathtaking and definitely made it a memorable experience. The dishes we had unfortunately lacked quite a bit of flavour which was disappointing because I’d had such high hopes for the place. The service was also quite slow despite there only being 5 tables in.

Another amazing Sunday lunch. Lovely staff and very helpful. Forgot to ask if we’d like any condiments, but to be honest the gravy is so good here it doesn’t need any! Delicious 10/10! An absolutely quirky and very unusual venue. We had an amazing time. Good food, reasonable prices and very friendly staff. Thus is a unique and unmissable place to visit.

Quirky, friendly & great food. Food is home-made, I’ve eaten here a few times, Sunday roast & the curry- all beautifully cooked and really yummy! A little pricy for alcoholic drinks, but a special venue and great food. Would definitely recommend. Dog friendly too! 👍🏼
