Nice eatery at the end of the road --- literally! We were in the Road End Cottage across the way - so had to eat here upon arrival on a Saturday night. Good service - nice food. lovely view of harbour and when it gets dark the fairy lights are a nice touch.

We stopped in here as part of a small tour group but were not impressed, we asked for a table and were given a menu and noone came back for our order after 10 mins so we just left. Service wasnt pleasant at all and prices were a bit steep on the menu too. Others on our tour were last to be served and held our group up, not very well organised and lack of staff. Not impressed at all.

This is now called the Breakwater. We stopped for a light lunch on a sunny day. The views are stunning. The café itself is clean and simple. Homemade soup and sandwich were both good, and well-priced. The toilet was clean and very well maintained. A decent little cafe for a quick meal if you're in the area.

A nice little cafe with a great view and pretty good menu at reasonable prices. We ate the langoustine plate which was huge and served up with good chips. The homemade cakes were to die for. As only one other table came in after us I can't comment much on the service although it did kind of feel informal, but we were forewarned that the langoustines would take 20 minutes to prepare.

We travelled up to Ness from Stornoway, taking in the sites as we went. Our main reason was to see the harbour and beach but as it was 2:15 we thought we stop at the café and have a sandwich. For some reason on a Saturday, they stopped serving meals at 2pm. The only thing they had was pate with oat cakes and a few cakes to have with your drink. The place was packed and after waiting some time for our drinks we realised that nobody was eating. Eventually soups started appearing one at a time to random tables, not looking as though anything was coming out in table order. We sat for over 30 minutes waiting for pate, coffee and cake. Other diners were expressing their thoughts having waited over an hour for a sandwich and one couple where the staff had forgotten a soup. There must have been something wrong that day but I cant see that they would survive being so poor but we were never offered an apology or explanation for the delays. I'm pleased we hadn't travelled to eat specifically here. The harbour and beach made up for the disappointment.

Been here before and thought service was a tad slow then but this time it was dire...aka 'Faulty Towers' We chose the Langoustines and pot of tea...received the tea but waited 45 mins. for anything else to arrive...no side bowls finger bowls or napkins ...the platter arrived (without any means to be able to eat them or the chips) consequently the tea was now cold...had to go and retrieve cutlery myself napkins etc. While waiting we had watched when and how the food came out with no method whatsoever ...one table of 4 served 1 soup only....another served cake as a desert before her main served although her partner had nearly finished his mains! Would help the waitresses if they knew what table they had to serve as it was easy to see it was a free for all when they came out with any food (asking who ordered what) a simple system of giving the customer a number (matching order) would avoid all this.. Waitress did apologise to each table for the delays and mix ups...We were lucky In a way that no one else after us ordered the platter while we were there as someone else would have got it and we would have been still waiting to be served....might add there were only 4 tables taken so what it would be like if it was a full house ????

Our second trip to the fabulous Sonas Cafe at Port of Ness. The menu was amazing, although we don’t eat fish and had just had brunch, late holiday rise. We had lunch here with friends. Unimaginative menu but enough choice to satisfy the five of us. Two had soup (delicious) and mackerel pate (OK), one the whole roasted mackerel (good), one the smoked haddock mornay (bony but tasty) and one the steak sandwich, full of salad but tiny strips of overdone minute steak (not great). Service ok but slow................... Would come back for the view and cuppa but not much else.

We visited this place twice during a short stay on Lewis. The first day the server seemed very nice and friendly, the place is a great setting, comfortable with stunning sea views, and the tea, coffee, and cake we had were outstanding. So we went back the next day for lunch. I had the Port Ness lobster dish to try something locally caught. It was a bit of a waste of fresh lobster: quite bland, but I can't say it was poorly made, just not my cup of tea. However, my partner, who was delighted to see a vegan / gluten free meal on the menu, had a bit of a shock when she discovered what looked like a piece of pork in the sweet and sour vegetable stirfry. She was pretty hungry so she put it to one side of the plate and finished her meal. When the nice woman we had met the day before collected our plates she asked me how the lobster was, and completely ignored my partner, despite not being able.to miss the piece of meat on the side of her allegedly vegan plate. It all felt very weird and we can't work out what could have been going on. Also my partner's hot chocolate was made with milk that was on the turn and she felt a bit ill from it. You may wonder why we didn't question any of this. Sometimes things are so odd and you feel so unwelcome that it doesn't seem like complaining will get you anywhere.

Went with my mother and three kids after a trip to the beach. Sign said open. Like other reviews we thought the cake was quite pricey so decided against it however ordered ice creams for the kids and tea/ juice etc. We ended up needing to ask if there was table service as there was a bit of a lack of acknowledgement from the staff. The lady who brought us our ice creams was pleasant enough. However when I went to pay I found the lady at the till a bit short. It actually put me off leaving a tip and felt like an inconvenience tbh. I wouldn't go back. Lovely view but it was let down by the staff members attitude.

Cafe Sonas is in a beautiful spot overlooking Port of Ness harbour and is the only eatery around. We arrived about 3.50 pm on a beautiful afternoon and were pleased to see a good collection of baked goods. A lady in front of us was being served and we were hastily told we could only have take aways. Asking if we could have take away cake too never raised a smile. Several other people arrived and the queue went out the door. It was peak tea time. The lady was very short with us about the mixed order of drinks and when she was asked if there was a stirrer, meaning a wooden spatula as she obviously didn't want to do any washing up, she drew her hand over the cutlery tray and said sarcastily " We call this - cutlery".

We got here about 3 in the afternoon. The cabinet on the counter was filled with all kinds of delicious looking baked goods and there was a chalk board menu of nice looking food on the back wall. While still deciding, we heard the two ladies tell the 4 ahead of us that they were only serving the baked goods. So we chose our snacks and our drinks and got a table with a beautiful view. Well, we just walked in here to be met by a cabinet full of fab-looking home baking, and really fancied a coffee and cake. We got a snappish ‘what are you after?’. When we said ‘coffee and cake’ the reply was ‘we are only doing lunches’ and a quick view of the rear of the waitress’s head. Charming, not! There were free tables, and I thought my money was as good as anyone else’s but obviously not. We were travelling free camping across Isle of Lewis and selected this small coffee shop to have our breakfast because of the views and the location. When we arrive we were waiting for them to open for around 20 minutes and as we thought this might not happen, we looked for an alternative as we desperately needed a coffee, so we made ourselves an instant coffee, one of those you buy at a shop and pour boiling water on them... as this looked like our only chance to have something warm at 10.30 am...

A pleasant looking café with lovely views over Ness harbour. However, I agree with other reviewers that the afternoons are hopeless. We waited a while and no-one appeared to serve, although the café was busy. No-one came to the desk either and I didn't see any bell to summon them. It's very disappointing, as other cafes in this area, have either shut or changed to being guest houses (such as the Decca) and the fact that the Ness Historical Society museum is closed for refurbishment and the café is inclined to close early or is busy with groups.

We venture here after reading the great reviews. The location is impressive and the views are amazing. We had a great table overlooking the sandy beach and surfers. I ordered languistines which were mainly over cooked (they collapsed when I opened them). When I complained I was told that it was only the smaller ones. And that the larger ones were fine. They weren’t - although they were better. They made me feel like I was a difficult customer trying it on to get a refund. I’m really not that person. Others had the vegan wrap which they said was tasteless - basically tins of beans emptied onto a wrap. My daughter said the haddock pie was lovely.

While visiting Port of Ness, we came across this little gem. It is right at the end of the road just before the harbour. It is an unassuming looking building, and the entrance isn't much to look at, but.....boy oh boy! Have they got an outlook to die for??!! Staffed by two charming, mature ladies with lovely Lewis accents, this place serves everything from a cup of tea to a full meal. We were looking for tea and cake and were not disappointed. In fact, so impressed were we that we went in after our walk to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse for 'afters'!! The scones and cakes are scrummy! For us it was very welcome indeed and we can recommend that you stop here. However, if you do, don't expect a great range on offer and do expect to pay quite a lot for it. We get the problem for them - everything has to be hauled a long way to get it here, but these are Starbucks prices without their quality.

Agree with other reviews that it is nothing great to look at on first glance, but with the side extension looking out to the sea and down over the small harbour and sandy beach it makes the most of its position. It even has an outside seating area which with good weather would be great if you have the dog with you as they are not allowed inside. We only had room for a light lunch, but could quite easily have been tempted by the langoustines which were fresh that morning. Had soup and bread instead, which was certainly home made, delicious. We were speaking to another couple who had been staying in one of the local holiday cottages as they had been eating in the café almost every day and were very impressed with the quality of the food. Owner and staff were both friendly and helpful. As another reviewer stated, they were due to close for the season a few days after we visited, but definitely a place to keep on the revisit list.

When we first arrived looked at the menu and when nothing jumped out for the kids enquired, was told no. No explanation or alternative just we don't do kids menu! Look at my husband and thought ok can you do a cheese roll? The women serving said she would see what the kitchen can do but one person was off sick so this is why we have a limited menu. She came back and said yes and we ordered 2 cheese rolls, BLT, large bowl of soup and roll (advertised at £7! and came is a cup!) latte, tea, coke and water. Was then told as we were having lunch we could sit on a reserved table - we keep these tables for people eating! We went through and sat down and watch the chaos develop. The server who was abrupt but stressed came through with the orders and the food was a free for all - no organisation at all, drinks were not served and although we found the whole thing amusing waited a further 20 minutes asked for a drinks refund and left. The food we had was good but let down by the quality of service - a poor representation for Scotland. I have worked in this field before and this could simply be resolved by issuing numbers to the customers and writing the number on the order slip. The Cafe is in a beautiful location and could be a gold mine. Customer service is key and being pleasant is free!

There was only one table taken by a family so we were amazed that this establishment would turn away business. We realise that somewhere around £8 is not a lot of money but surely having bums on seats is better for business particularly when there is nowhere else to get a cup of tea. They don't deserve the business but the public deserve a good cafe in this area.

The young lad who brought the order to our table was very pleasant but was totally unsupported by the lady behind the counter. The lady in question took payment for our order and gave my friend in her change a £5 note which was withdrawn from circulation earlier this month. My friend explained that this was no longer valid currency and the woman insisted that they can still be used. As a result we went back to the counter and bought an ice-cream and gave them the fiver back. Such a disappointing encounter on an otherwise perfect day. Food was OK but nothing to write home about.

Popped in here for coffee and possibly the biggest scone EVER! Homemade buttermilk scones were absolutely delicious, and the coffee was good. The view was what really made the place stand out from the rest though - stunning view of the beach.

The menu was different each time I visited. I had cod & chips and salmon & beetroot salad both of which were made to order & very fresh. The service one night was 2 young girls who ran the place very efficiently.Prices were mid range with only quibble being paying for an individual portion of sauce/mayo in a dish this should be complimentary. There was adequate parking & beautiful view of beach.

Stopped here for a late lunch [1450] and only Soup and bread [cakes &scones] available so I took a bowl of Tomato soup & a drink [£6].When it arrived it was a very big bowl and 7 pieces of crusty bread. The soup looked to be made with real tomatoes and it was very nice. You get a nice view as well.

I visited at lunchtime and found the place charming and bijou with spectacular views. Mid price range for meals and I tried the leek and vegetable tart which was tasty but had clearly been warmed up in the microwave and the salad portion was more of a side garnish. The lady that served me was friendly and polite. The coffee was a little over cooked with a bitter taste and this was for a latte but the day was cold and there are not many places to eat in this end of the island. I would recommend it but menu items are not flexible but perhaps I didn't visit at it's best time.

Arrived to find absolute organised chaos. The cafe was full and only 2 members of staff but what a find and the waitress never lost it even though she was under great pressure. Neither did anyone leave the atmosphere was so relaxing with fantastic views across the water and golden sands. The food was fabulous - stuffed mackerel for me - absolutely great. Even managed a yummy cake to follow.Despite the lack of staff the one kitchen staff and waitress really had the place buzzing. It may seem as if you have reached the end of the world but this is definitely not a place to miss.

2 teas and 2 cakes. The cake was homemade and not bad. However at £11.00 this was a bit expensive for cups of tea, given we saw others with a large pot. But as they say any port in a storm. I'll take a flask next time.

Popped in here last week after visiting the lighthouse. We just wanted a sandwich but as they didn't have any, we had to order full meals. We were told to look at the large board in another room and come back to place our order. Having chosen, we were then told that some of our choices were unavailable. However, the food was served quite quickly and tasted good. Service was pretty friendly.

What a fantastic little place at the port of Ness. My daughter and I thought we would go in and have a drink only. However, when we opened the door and were faced with an array of home baked cakes and scones we decided to partake.. The treacle and apple scone I had was on another level-by far the best scone I can ever remember having. The scone was light-not heavy-like many scones can be. The flavours were subtle not over powering. My daughter had chocolate cake with gold topping-again she said it was light and very flavoursome. They sold langoustines which were caught that morning. The portions looked more than adequate as we saw when someone order herring. They did children's portions on the menu too. Fantastic vista,- everyone was peering out window after someone thought they saw an Orca. The staff were extremely friendly and nothing was too much for them. Would give Sonas 5 star all the way.

I stumbled in here dripping wet after a walk around the coast blasted by the wind and rain around by the Butt of Ness lighthouse and was met with a very warm welcome, further bolstered by some lovely soup and an epic scone. I'm an epic scone kind of person. The sun came out as I gazed down to the harbour. Restored. Thanks.

We had a platter of langoustines each, huge portions, and very good value for money. The third meal was mackerel, two, for under £8.00, which was so good my husband didn't want to share a morsel. The cup of tomato soup added with the mackerel, he said was the best tomato soup, he had ever tasted.

Stopped by for lunch, just arrived before the lunch rush. Our order took over an hour, and we cleaned our own tables, otherwise we would never have left. I will say the dessert was excellent, though the cafe does not make it.The servers were useless and wonderful. One barely would make eye contact, and could not take an order, the other was wonderful smiling and pleasant. As others have said the Langoustine were mushy, the food was incredibly bland, with virtually no taste between the french fries and the soup. But the worst art was this was such an over priced meal I was offended.

After walking along the (amazing) beach at the port of Ness; decided to pop into café Sonas for coffee & cake; having heard about it I knew it wasn't to be missed. The cake was beautiful. It was so light and tasted like it had been made that day. The lady who served us was lovely and couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. There are stunning views from the windows, which we were lucky enough to get seats beside.Café Sonas is well worth a visit should you find yourself in Ness.

Having spent summers on the sands at Port of Ness, it was great to sit in the restaurant overlooking the beach. Although it was August, it was certainly not beach weather. This wee café was busy, but we got a table and had an excellent and very good value light lunch. We'll be back when we are next in Lewis

My husband and I visited Cafe Sonas on a glorious August day and sat outside overlooking the beach. We both ordered langoustines. The girl arrived with an ENORMOUS platter set it down and said " I'll just go and get the other one". We almost fell off our benches. They were cooked in butter flavoured with garlic and lime and were quite simply TO DIE FOR accompanied by beautiful fresh bread and french fries.Excellent quality coffee followed along with a delicious whisky cake. Incredible value for money with the freshest local produce! As a previous reviewer said, ignore the Negative Nancys! I suspect they are used to city dining and haven't even thought about the staffing/supply issues invloved in running a catering business in such a remote area on AN ISLAND!Cannot WAIT to revist the next time we're in Lewis!

I have often heard how lovely it was here and that the food was delicious but had never managed to go so i finally got a chance to take friends over who were on holiday during the festival week....What a let down, i found every table piled with dirty dishes, staff were not at all helpful, there was very little left on offer from the menu, so settled on coffee md scones which took 40 mins to be served!!!! Other customers were also complaining..Beautiful setting and views ofcourse but i dont think myfriends would have left the island raving about this!!!!Perhaps we just picked a bad day.

This was my 1st time to the island as we came to see my friends who own a B&B here. We came to the beach and thought a beautifully placed cafe would be a perfect spot for lunch. After ordering 2 drinks we decided to eat in but the menu didn't really cater for light bite lunches and the only thing my partner and myself really wanted was the children's pizza and chips as we only needed a small something. After taking a table outside we were told by the girl who served us that they couldn't serve us the pizza as we are not children so would need to refund us. I was in shock. A sales a sale and I think shocked me more that the owner or chef must have taken the time to see who they were serving to deny the sale. Must admit I have never heard of a refused sale for something so silly.

We visited this lovely cafe by day and decided to go back and try it for dinner one evening. We booked ahead but failed to properly estimate it's distance from where we were staying. We were consequently 15 minutes late. When we arrived the whole place was closed up for the night with no sign of anyone. So warning if you book for an evening meal double check they are going to be open!

After a brisk walk at the lighthouse we were ready for coffee and cake and we were not disappointed by Cafe Sonas. I had the coffee and walnut cake and my mum had a cherry and raisin scone. Both were delicious. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the sun and the view of the beautiful beach. My only regret is that we were there so early in the day...11am just as they opened...because the main courses sounded absolutely gorgeous and we would have loved to have had lunch.

Visited this cafe one lunch time during our visit to the North of Lewis.I have to say I was a little sceptical of what it would be like, purely as the places to eat in the area are limited. However my reservations were soon squashed and we had a lovely dining experience. My partner had langoustines - a huge portion arrived, which was very inexpensive, and I had salad with smoked salmon, again this was lovely and fresh and very reasonably priced. The server was super, a lovely polite young man who couldn't do more to help us.I've given the place 4 out of 5, but this is really because when we were there the only tables outside were for 4 or more numbers and a family joined our table half way through our meal.Perhaps a couple of smaller tables would have given couples an option to sit and relax and enjoy the view.

Popped in here for tea and cake after a wander from our cottage down to Port Nis, aware of negative reviews so tried not to pre-judge! Bit of a wait to be served as it was very busy but young man at counter apologised and took our order, mix of tea, hot chocolate, cake and ice cream. Cakes, tea and choc arrived but was another 10-15 minutes before my daughter's ice cream arrived. It looked like main meals were being given priority so they were delivered freshly made but I prefer to all be served fairly close together as I don't like to start until food has arrived- just good manners! My tea would have been cold had I done this! My coffee and walnut cake was divine, lovely soft and light as a feather sponge with just the right amount of coffee cream topping. My son devoured his chocolate cake so guess that was pretty good too, same went for ice cream and caramel shortcake. Apparently the hot chocolate was so bad my husband didn't drink it even after putting 2 sugars in it! Cakes worth it, I don't mind waiting for good food but much prefer all eating together as a family as we would at home. Views are amazing out to Port beach and harbour if you can bag a window seat which we didn't as there was only one free table for four.

Cannot review the food as we did not get any, pretty looking place, sunny day, sat at table outside, waiter gave us some menus, said it was table service and that he would return in 5 minutes to take our order......nothing for 15 minutes, popped my head in to ask about ordering, to be told kitechen was closed and no food available, I explained we had been waiting for 15 mins.....Party of 4 French visitors who seated a minute after us were also told the same after waithing 15 mins.......we all left..... Kiosk up the hill was very friendly and good food!!!!!

This small family run hotel is a breath of fresh air. It greets you like a warm hug from the moment you enter. The rooms are furnished with good taste and good quality. The bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful with a wide choice of options. We had dinner on two nights. On Sunday it was served in the main dining room and on Monday in the bar/pub. The bar/pub in a separate building at the rear of the hotel is a wee gem with a great atmosphere. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone and hope to return in the future
