Cafe been here for years so must be doing something right. Called in for a coffee and toasted teacake which was fine. Close to bus station.

Visited here last saturday with my mum (our monthly outing together). As we passed from the bus station this place looked busy but we have found in the past there usually the best places.. wrong!!!! The food was average as for service; it was full of young girls who clearly had no idea as to what they was doing. We had to constantly ask for assistance from get go including asking could we order. We eventually had our meals which was brought out by one of the staff who was in the kitchen; (not sure how professional that is). Although she was much politer than the other teenagers and serviced us with cutlery and drinks which the other girls had forgot. Wont be going back in a hurry thats for sure.

Called in with my partner for a breakfast ,cafe was empty apart from two other people but the service was shocking , waitress was more interested in talking to friends who called in , ordered drinks , she brought mine over but then went back talking , leaving my partners drink on the side , with no sign of her bringing it over , we had to shout her over , food was ok but the toast was like warm bread , what really bothers me ,is the amount of people allowed to go in the food prep area carrying shopping and wearing outdoor clothing , I witnessed 10 people coming and going through the food prep area , surly this is a cross contamination risk ??? ,With nobody stopping them it must be a normal thing ! .The manager might be interested in staff giving away free drinks to colleagues coming in on their day off too .When we came to leave it took four attempts to shout the waitress for the bill as she was too busy talking to friends again , I would have thought in this day and age ,in a competitive market , customers are worth keeping .There seemed to be more visitors than customers and now I can see why ! Never again .

In need of something to warm us up on a November Saturday, this place satisfied everyone. It was packed and we had to wait for a table, but the atmosphere is really friendly and easy-going. The family whose table we took said they aren't local but they travel in for the all day breakfast and shepherd's pie, which was enough of a recommendation for my sister and brother-in-law. Brother-in-law had the large breakfast, including black pudding, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes etc. Sister had the most enormous shepherd's pie, plus a bowl of multiple veg, that she simply couldn't finish. Both got top marks. I plumped for old favourite egg and chips, with two perfect fried eggs and only £2.50. Iced tap water was also provided, which was very welcome. With a cup of strong coffee to finish, this was a very reasonably priced lunch, with good service and helpful staff. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Stopped of a Cafe select as we just fancied some good old fashioned fish and chips, the fish and chips were ok and the service was also ok,nothing bad to report just a nice simple cafe, but it could be better. But at the end of the day it’s a small no frills cafe so you can’t be expecting all bells and whistles:-)

sorry Howard called at select this afternoon 6th june with a friend and the mrs 2 of us wanted pudding and chips but they had none so i picked half chicken chips and peas mrs picked hotpot and friend had liver and onions with chips the liver was dry and lacking any gravy the hotpot was just warm and dry and the crust could not be cut I tried myself and was impossible to cut complained and they changed the crust which was exactly the same the chicken looked good untiI I cut into the middle which was still frozen the cook came over and apologised and said it was hard to judge if the chicken is cooked or not !!! not a good answer on health grounds this was after waiting about 40 minutes for the food and not busy only three other people in café probably the worst three meals I have ever been served anywhere in the world didn't charge me for the chicken but maybe we shouldn't have paid for any of it only the drinks and the bread use to be good food here but everything seems to be done on the cheap come on Howard something needs to be done this is the second bad meal I have had here only went back because our friend liked to eat here so we took him back after being poorly only to find out later when he ate here it was only egg and chips that he had not much chance of spoiling that will never go back!!!!! don't go here !!!! terrible

Clean and pleasant surroundings and friendly staff lured me into this cosy town centre cafe. Was very dissapointed by the "Lancashire Hotpot" Very bitter crust and generally the wrong consistency. I have had Hotpot on numerous occasions in other establishments and up to date have never been dissapointed. Unfortunately I am unable to comment on the other items on the menu. The coffee was ok incidentally.

I'm not sure how anyone could have a bad word to say about this place. I live local and I go in on a regular basis and have never had a problem. Great staff, a great selection of different foods and reasonably priced. It's filled with regulars. The majority of the reviews are 5 rated for a reason. We can't all be wrong in thinking it's a brilliant cafe. Look forward to seeing everyone soon for my big breakfast! I think I'll have a cheese toastie to take away with me for my lunch after.

I'm not usually one to complain but I could not share this review soon enough! We visited this cafe for lunch on Boxing Day bank holiday and were surprised by the amount of staff they had working there. The decor is awful. The restaurant was quiet so we were easily able to find a table and as soon as we sat a member of staff came to take our order without giving us chance to see a menu. We ordered a cheese toastie and chips however when it was served to us by, what was effectively, a careless child it was in fact cheese on toast. We complained that it wasn't what we ordered so the girl took the food back to the kitchen put the cheese on toasts together and brought it back as a toastie. Now, we aren't stupid and we are more than aware of what she did. I should point out that on the menu cheese on toast is £2.25, a toastie is £4.25 and comes with salad and crisps. The plates and cutlery looked dirty, the mugs were chipped and mismatched and the salt and pepper shakers were odd. Basically full of imperfections. The food was good. Nothing special, small portions, not worth what it cost, but edible. When we went to pay the bill we were seen to by another careless employee who tried to overcharge us by charging for a toastie when we were given CHEESE ON TOAST. It was only £2 and to be frank it wasn't about the money, this was purely a matter of principal. That she thought it was okay to over charge me. She seemed confused when we said that we had cheese on toast and not a toastie. She was unaware of the difference between the two. Eventually after I kicked up a fuss the price was right. Overall, AVOID THIS PLACE! The decor is tragic, staff are lazy, careless, and rude, and the food is very over priced! It would've been cheaper AND BETTER for us to go to costa. And we certainly will next time

Lets be straight, this is a cafe and not a posh restaurant, the welcome was bright and breezy when we entered on a rainy day. Tables were limited as they were busy and the hard working staff were constantly rushing around, but all smiling and acknowledged customers making warm short conversation when possible. Being in Wigan we went for the pies (home made steak & ale, chicken and mushroom with lots of chunks of meat & flavour), real potato chips ( not from the freezer) and a choice of veg. (Only mixed was on the menu but we were offered anything available. If I was to be picky I would say the pies were warm and not hot however the food was great and plentiful, lovely service and will now be a must if in the area for lunch.

Ordered a "Medium" Breakfast. The Sausage, measured in length was no more than 2inches and approx half an inch thick and the rasher of bacon was no bigger than half the palm of my hand, i only got one of each. The rest of the plate was filled up with the least expensive items ie beans, tomatoes, mushrooms which visually made it look value for money. I thought there might have been another rasher of bacon under the egg but after searching the plate nothing was found. If thats the medium breakfast I wouldn't like to think what the small breakfast consists of. Cannot recommend for breakfasts & I certainly will not be paying another visit.

Two of us wanted to try The Coven veggie place over the road but the third (Wiganer) member of our group is an avowed meat eater so we ended up here, first for a coffee, then back for a meal as it all looked so good. The coffee was excellent - it stayed hot, which is always a bonus for me. When we returned we were spoilt for choice from the large menu offering a variety of things - in our group our confirmed meat eater had the chilli with rice and chips, easy-going gave up on vegetarian thoughts and had a massive lamb roast, while I had a veggie panini with salad and chips. Looking round, other diners had plates piled with pies covered in thick gravy, with mash and veg that looked like proper traditional comfort food. The chips were thick and delicious and we all enjoyed our meals. The first waitress was extremely friendly and informal - possibly not everyone's cup of tea but it made the whole ordering process relaxed and fun. We had iced tap water - always a bonus - and she apologised that the veg with the roast dinner weren't fresh as they had run out (it being quite late in the afternoon). This was refreshing honesty. Portion sizes were inevitably large and, sadly, we couldn't fit any of the pudding choices in - with all the usual suspects on offer to tempt us; cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding, apple pie and custard etc. This is home cooked traditional food as it should be, with no airs and graces. I really enjoyed the whole experience and will be bringing my very fussy son for sausage and mash soon (there being a vinyl shop just along the way). Recommended.

In the small street of Hallgate in Wigan, next door to the fine fish and chip shop, Mr Chips is Cafe Select. The Cafe Select is actually part of Mr Chips and provides a restaurant. A warm welcome from the friendly team of waiting staff, where an incredibly varied menu is provided and of course a lot of the diners just plump for the fish and chips from Mr.Chips.Nothing is too much trouble for the team where, apart from the menu choices, you can almost mix and match anything that's on the menu. Famous for the three choices of "all day breakfast" you can choose from the breakfast, the bigga breakfast or even the megga breakfast. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, but be warned, if you're looking for lunch, get there early as it's often extremely busy between 11.30.am and 1.30.pm. but once inside, you'll soon see why.

Booked for a bottomless brunch as a group for a birthday we went early to put balloons on a table when we went back for the brunch we had been moved upstairs to a dark room were no one else was with no one in the bar all the entertainment was going on downstairs felt like we had just been shoved out the way they had either overbooked or accepting walk in when they were already full. After being left ignored upstairs for 20 mins we had to ask for someone to take our drinks order and we got back what you here for I didn’t no you were up here! 30 mins after our order being taken a member of our party complained the reply was we are just arranging done complimentary wine for your table (this must be the wine he had just walked in with in a Tesco carrier bag !) and none of our party even drink wine! We were all that annoyed with waiting we got our money back and went and spent it on cocktails in weatherspoons! The whole experience was a shambles and spoiled what was meant to be a birthday day out with friends. That was my first and last visit to hedera and i definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone!!
