Cafe Rio, SUP & Kayak Hire, Maidencombe Beach in Torbay

You wouldn't find this little gem unless you were a local or walking the coastal path. Great little cafe on the cliff side on the path down to the beach. We stopped off Sunday morning, it was very busy, as was the little cove/beach . Great location.

Such a friendly place, they couldn’t have been nicer to us when we visited making us feel welcome and helping us to enjoy our holiday in Maidencombe. From early morning coffee, through relaxed lunches to the Pizza night with a local seal expert and local music Cafe Rio was fantastic.

Absolutely beautiful experience. Food and drinks reasonably priced and great quality, and staff were super helpful throughout our visit to the beach. Kayaks for hire were great fun and again reasonably priced. Service was fast and nothing was too much. They especially took great care regarding my allergy requirements. Ever so thankful for the staff who made our visit a splendid one (even on a rainy day)

Good location, good coffee and snacks

Amazing coffee, very clean & the staff are super friendly! Can’t beat the view, we even saw 2 dolphins swimming past.

This is such a lovely location the staff are very helpful the food is good and it has lots of places to sit and watch the world go slowly by.

If I tell the truth it will become too popular but that would be simply selfish, wouldn't it? A most wonderful location with views rarely beaten anywhere in the world. On a good day you can see Portland! A steepish climb down to this really friendly cafe where the staff are always cheerful and polite. Food is freshly prepared and at busy times can take a while but it's worth it. If the queue is too long, order and you can take a pager down to the beach that vibrates when your delicious sandwich, roll or plate of your choice is ready. Menu pretty wide for a small establishment and each carefully made. The location, the cafe and the staff, the selection and quality of food and drink make this a venue that will be best enjoyed now, before the masses hear of it. Note: check tide times as high tide takes up almost all the beach. Note2: closed over Christmas from 18/12 to 12/1/23. I promise it well.worth the trip.

A hidden gem !!!!! Found it by chance. Cafe Rio serves amazing coffee's and excellent food. Ice creams are amazingly good. Paud car parking at the top, cash only, NOT expensive. Toilets 🚻 by car park before heading down to the beach, clean and ideal. Not to many steps down to beach which is a bonus. It is NOT a private beach and yet it is secluded. Perfect day to spend swimming, paddle boarding etc. A must do Maidencombe beach !!!!!!

This is a great cafe and hire place. Great atmosphere and food. The staff are always pleasant and extremely knowledgeable of the local area.

Absolutely brilliant! I fail to find the words to justly compliment the experience at Care Rio given by a family and staff who care. The staff, the food, the rental gear, the chat, the view—all are better than you’d ever expect down a path near the shore. Prices are less than you’d expect for the quality. I’ll simply say: visit or you’re missing the most memorable experience on the coast.

Cafe has lovely friendly staff and the hier company are so helpful and give all the relevant information it is a magical cove and after a busy day on the beach a nice drink in the thatchers taven garden perfect way to round of the day xxx

Great place to stop off for a break if you're walking along this stretch of the Southwest Coastal Footpath. The coffee was excellent and the cakes etc. were very tempting (I resisted). Wonderful view across the bay.

Had lunch and a few beers before having a swim. Small beach hut bar but many choices for food and drinks and the staff are great too. Well done girls ♥️

An amazing place Linzi and team are on the ball, great service, friendly staff, good food and drinks. Chris is great with kayak and sup hire. The cove is out of this world, safe swimming in a sheltered setting.

Well worth the gentle down hill (a little more taxing uphill) walk to this delightful Cafe, watersports hire and popular little wild /sea swimming beach. The Cafe staff are genuinely helpful, good natured and cheerful~and the consumables reasonably priced.

The staff are very friendly. The cafe looks so clean and shiny, I mistook it for a brand new place. We arrived by kayak and had lemon cake and coffee. Fantastic place. We've even recommended it in our kayak route book Paddle the South West out June 2023.

With a view like that, and a spot on a green cliff, overlooking a beach in Devon, a pretty cafe does not need to do much to get 5 stars. But... the staff were friendly (I dont know why, but as soon as I leave London, everyone calls me 'love...'), the food was fast and tasty and my milkshake was fab!! I felt like a kid again!!

We paddled here from Babbacombe Beach. Didn't know it was there until some coasteerers told us about it. Food is amazing, the best Lemon cake ever! And coffee was perfect. Lovely staff, great atmosphere and gorgeous sea views. A must visit!!

Great little spot to enjoy well earned lunch after a lovely walk from St. Marychurch along the coast path. Accessible via limited car parking in Maidencombe (car park requires several pound coins). Well serviced, great views, good menu snd reasonable prices. Enjoyable even in inclement weather!

Had a lovely swim this morning on the beach and then coffee at Rio .Great coffee .great atmosphere .a view to die for and lovely friendly service . The sun was out as well perfect morning. Well worth the short walk down there .

What a superb little cafe situated with incredible views of the bay! Great menu selection and such friendly staff. The last thing you would expect on a walk down to the beach. Loved our lunch, the Sausage Hot Dog with onions and cheese was simply superb. Definitely going to be going back.

Such a lovely spot. We went down for a coffee post Sunday lunch and got to see a seal. The lemon cake is lovely, and the coffee quality is excellent. Lovely owners. 💖

A remarkable surprise cafe accessible from a public footpath and next to the beach with views of the sea. Good breakfast and lunch suitable food and drinks too.

We ate breakfast here. The coffee was particularly nice, especially in the morning sun. There were lots of options, including vegan.

We've been here a few times. Quite busy and hype during holidays. — Rio is open even on off-peak when parking lot is closed. There are table seatings around the cafe vicinity and please dispose off your own rubbish instead of leaving them on the table/stairs/beach.

We came here for SUP hire on holiday and we ended up ordering some lunch afterwards. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The BLT sandwich was superb, especially the bread. My coffee was also lovely and bonus points that they did decaf! The views from the cafe are also stunning.

What an amazing place! We visited twice during our stay in Devon. The food was great and the staff were very friendly. In the words of my daughter 'that frappe' is better than starbucks'! We took our paddle boards along with us also and the walk from the car to the beach took a few minutes which was great!

This little cafe is just lovely. It’s run by super nice people, their coffees are superb, and the menu is impressive for such a small place. It’s our usual pit stop on our walks, and we’re always welcomed back like old friends. The location is wonderful with the view over the little bay, very impressive in any kind of weather!

A genuinely great coffee and more besides! When you try a new place and ask for a flat white, it is not without a preprogrammed sense of low expectation that they even know the difference. Not here! Great coffee, well made and a superb breakfast to go with it! Totally recommend this superb cafe with a great offering and superb views to go with it! Keep up the good work!

Friendly place in lovely location. Winter opening and menu in place from 1st November so unable to gat a sandwich, but enjoyed tea, pastie and cake - all good!

Rio Beach Cafe is a treasure to discover, we enjoyed some lovely hot pasties and a lovely strong cuppa, the cafe is located at the foot of the steps leading to the beach, there is plenty of seating just above the cafe, a definite place to visit and observe the lovely beach/cove, just below.

Good food and hot drinks at a reasonable price, all the staff serving food were really nice and friendly. Also hired paddle boards one day, good value, top quality equipment and a lovely man talking us through it all…..oh and then there’s the view, what a stunning location.

So good to see the cafe reopened. Lydnsay and her father have done a fantastic job getting it into shape. Great menu with the usual cafe favourites plus vegan options (recommend the Vegan pastie), 5* coffee, kayak/paddle board rental & friendly staff. This is what Maidencombe has been missing for many years - the results are already being seen with a busy beach, and queues at the cafe. Views from the cafe are also unrivalled. Worth visiting for a morning dip and coffee, day on the beach or just to say hi and see the views.

First visit to Maidencombe beach, came across this little cafe, I don’t normally write reviews as I am a very fussy and always end up being disappointed, NOT today! Excellent quality of food and coffee, the granary bread and sandwich fillings were perfect, fresh and delicious, coffee latte was of excellent quality made with fresh milk, something on the menu to suit all tastes, even treats for the dogs after a swim in the sea, the seating areas are cleaned so well you feel like you’re the first customer to use them, all of the staff were so friendly- what a difference to be greeted by a friendly smiling face, you can see in to the kitchen and it is immaculate, well done cafe Rio!

This is an amazing spot with beautiful sea views. I had the crab sandwich with brown bread which was very good and a vegan magnum, which is mot easy to find! Car parking is quite small so make sure you avoid to arrive at busy times
