Cafe Rebecca in Southend-on-Sea

This is by far the worst place I’ve ever eaten a meal. The place stunk of old oil and was filthy.I asked if the cod was fresh it wasn’t it was frozen purveyor bought cod.At £10 I would at least expect it not to be riddled with bones, the fish wasn’t even trimmed.Frozen chips and not many of them.Only saving grace was the owner had a bit of charm and there was a nice dog in the cafe.Dreadful dreadful dreadful. Avoid

Stopped off here for a quick bite to eat & sat outside in the sun. Lovely & clean tables, friendly staff & delicious hot food. Will definitely return soon & would highly recommend. Lovely little find!

Only eat at this place if you have money to waste and are very hungry and desperate.Went here for brunch on recommendation from other reviewers. Well is all I can say is people need to get out more.There are plenty of good places to eat in and around Southend other than this place.The gentleman that took are order well is all I can say is you are no Gordon Ramsey. Whilst trying to tell him how would like our food cooked, he kept talking over us and saying he knows what we like. Well you didn’t know as it came out over cooked even after it was bought to your attention of the over cooked items you still insisted that it was cooked to our liken. The sad thing is even though you knew we was unhappy with our food you did nothing to make it better other than keep up an argument.Unfortunately your food is bland overpriced and your portions are small. I would have tried to give you a better score if only you didn’t insist on arguing and tried to put things right. I feel that if a customer has ordered there food to come a certain way that’s what should arrive in front of them, after all they are paying for it. Your opinion that it was cooked correctly does not count as we are not paying for that.

Tiring of lockdown and needing fresh air, we decided to go to Southend for a good walk by the beach. Obviously we also needed coffee and lunch!We walked down from the town, spotted Cafe Rebecca and thought hmmm, looks nice. But being us we decided a walk to check out what else was there was a good idea. We walked right the way down to the aquarium and spotted.....nothing!! Nothing else caught our eye at all. Yes there are plenty of other takeaways all selling the same but Rebeccas just looks lovely. So back we went and bought coffees and bacon sandwiches. And I am so pleased we did. A lovely chat, really nice owner and lovely food. Place just stands out from the others. Hanging baskets and a welcoming frontage. We will definitely come back next time we visit.

Stopped by whilst out for a stroll. Beautiful fish and tasty chips. Could have eaten more! Kids loved the nuggets too. Highly recommend for the friendly service too. Will be back.

My wife and I decided to have a coffee and a snack whilst we were visiting Southend yesterday morning. We were walking along Western Esplanade and saw Cafe Rebecca. The sun was shining, so we sat down outside and enjoyed a tasty couple of toasties with some of the friendliest service you could wish to experience.Well done Cafe Rebecca, it was just the job !

Stopped off for the All Day Breakfast and a Veggie Breakfast - having noted the comments of a previous diner it very clearly says on the menu that these are set meals and cannot be altered. The food was freshly prepared and at £6.90 it was good value especially given the locaton. The all dayer consisted of two sausages, one bacon, egg, beans, sliced fresh tomatoes and fried slice. The veggie version had a veggie sausage, sliced fresh tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, a hash brown, beans and fried slice. There was more than enough to fill our empty tums. A large mug of tea at just £1.60 is a bargain for a seafront venue. Thumbs up to the staff and the lovely Rebecca.

We visited this lovely restaurant today, the fish and chips was delicious, lovely white cod, perfect batter cooked to perfection.My Grandson is autistic, we sat down outside and he was having a melt down, as other customers were looking at us, my Daughter decided we would leave, the owner of the restaurant approached me, he said that his own Grandson had autism, he suggested that our family could all eat inside, we would be the only customers, we took him up on the offer, and my Grandson calmed down.The food is top notch, and the customer services and kindness of this family was really appreciated.We often come to Southend, I highly recommend this lovely place, and I will definitely be returning.

We went there after passing it a fair few times on our walks and always seeing how popular it is, so thought that it must be good there. As a start one of the employees was rude, didn’t even look at you when speaking and snatching the menu’s up off the table. I asked for no mushroom or tomato on my veggie breakfast, but yet it still arrived with mushrooms on the plate. The food was soooo bland- the highlight of the meal for my tastebuds was my can of drink. Not only that, we wasn’t even asked how the food was. The lady herself, who owns the restaurant is very polite, it’s just a shame her employees let her down. It’s overpriced, unwelcoming and disappointing. Definitely wouldn’t go back there- and this is coming from a local, who purposely eats out at smaller restaurants to help independent businesses :(.

The owner who served us was one of the loveliest and welcoming I’ve ever had the pleasure of being served by! Such a nice guy and very accommodating. Lovely and fresh traditional food! Managed to accommodate all our requests! 5 stars well deserved! Yummy toastie pictured!

I visited here with my parents, my baby son and my dog. We were welcomed with a smile and were warmly invited in and felt immediately at home. (Finding somewhere with a crying baby, a massive pram and a dog can be hard!) We ordered our food and within no time at all it was ready- which was so wonderful as we were starving after a long walk down the seafront in the brisk wind. I can’t remember the owners name but he was a very lovely man and we enjoyed our meals a lot! And the price was extremely reasonable as well. We would all definitely recommend and will be returning soon.

Lovely little family run business. Freshly prepared fish and chips with super friendly staff, demetri was so lovely and helpful. We felt very welcome. They have only just re-opened so we felt very lucky to stumble upon this gem of a takeaway just at the right time. Well worth a visit. Excellent value for money too.

My son, dog and I were treated so well by the lovely owners. They were really kind and offered my dog a drink. They also have my son a complimentary lolly. The milkshakes were delicious. We would definitely return if we were in the area. Thank you for the perfect end to our little trip.

Against better judgement on background of sleep deprivation decided to take 2 year old and 4 month old to the beach in January as this is where 2 year old really wanted to go. Baby in sling, had woken up for feed, toddler not wanting to hold my hand, generally finding it a bit tough without a pram/pushchair for containment! Stumbled along trying to see somewhere open for some lunch, found cafe rebecca and we could not have been made more welcome! The owner (Rebeccas dad) told me he has 8 grandchildren and not to worry about noise feeding etc. Which was nice as toddler def not on best behaviour and baby unhappy til fed too! Had delicious hot chips but will definitely be back with other half to try more food, especially after seeing these reviews. Offered to put rest of toddlers chips in take away container too.I don’t normally leave reviews and only tried the chips but they were so friendly on what they could probably tell was a day not going to plan that I felt compelled to come on trip advisor.

I went here with 2 friends who are vegans. The gentleman who served us was so helpful and accommodating giving one friend the vegan version of the 'big breakfast'. The other had mushrooms on toast. My own big breakfast was huge so be warned you need a big appetite for this! A comfortable little cafe, the the gentleman was Rebeccas Dad and he was so lovely. Everything was fresh and piping hot. Will definitely go back. A little Southend gem.

We were in advanture Island so I checked trip advisor for somewhere to grab lunch. We picked Cafe Rebeeca due to the high ratings.It is just across the road from the pier entrance. There are tables inside and out. We sat inside by the door (word of warning the front door slides across so watch out for your elbow if sitting slightly sideways).The older gentleman who works here was very friendly and welcoming. The food was served very quickly. My son enjoyed the kids lasagne. I had the fish and chips, which was nice but the batter could have been crispier.

We visited here last night, we had seen that the reviews were already very good so we came to see for ourselves, my daughter is also called Rebekah so she wanted to eat in 'her cafe' ha ha. Well, what can I say, right from turning up on the outside we was met by Rebecca's Dad, he was so friendly and jolly, full of life and clearly proud of his Daughters business. That secured our place at the table. We made our drinks order that came in super quick time, drinks were amazing to start with, hot choc and tea were our choices. We then decided on what we wanted to eatHomemade steak pieKids fish and chipsBaby rugby burger andHawaiian hot dogHUUUUGE portions, all hot, all fresh, all delicious! Now onto deserts, Unfortunately the cherry pie had sold out, so clearly this is a very popular option, so we decided on Kids ice creamHot choc fudge cake and Brown derby.Wow.... beautifully presented, good size portions, the fudge cake was massive! The food was fantastic, and they make a lovely cup of tea, coffee and milk shakes, we sampled them all as we were there for around 3 hours meeting up with a large group. The staff were so friendly and very accommodating towards us. Really enjoyed our visit, thank you.

After walking up and down trying to decide the best place for fish and chips , we chose here ! Definitely a great choice. Warm welcome , lovely cuppa , and best fish and chips ! Pity we live so far away or it would be a regular haunt !

Hubby took me to southend for day we stopped at cafe rebeccas we had a warm welcome and lovely food. He had fish n chips and even tho i dont eat fish it looked lovely. I had quarter pounder n chips it was very good and quick.Would def go again.

We were on a day trip to Southend and stopped mid morning for a drink. We ended up having a toasted sandwich and pancakes with maple syrup - They were lovely. The Cypriot man gave us a warm welcome and the ladies who brought our drink/ food were friendly. We returned late afternoon/early evening and had cod and chips and scampi, which we enjoyed.

So many places to choose from but we went here based on a few reviews. Wasn't disappointed. Good location. Sharing platter was nice, looked like a lot of food but was just about right for 2 people. Bit more seating space outside than the others next to it.

Nice service, friendly and accomodating and the batter although wasn't crispy, wasn't too thick either. Scampi was decent and the only drawback was that the portions were small.

following an overnight stay in Southend on Thursday i didnt fancy breakfast at the hotel so after a long walk along the front i stopped at Rebecca,s .Im so glad i did. After a warm welcome I enjoyed one of the best breakfasts i have ever had.The food was cooked fresh using good quality produce.It was served hot and well presented.A small pet hate of mine is when beans are already on the plate,here they were served in a small pot ,happy days. I went for the big breakfast and it lived up to its name. Staff were friendly and the cafe was very clean.I had a chat with the owner who is greek.A lovely man who told me he has had the cafe for many years and its shows in the whole experience.Wouldnt hesitate again if visiting Southend. Always trust Tripadvisor and used app to find a good place, this came up, have to say T.A has never failed, today it did, maybe other foods are better but the jacket potatoes and service no!! Arrived and a to be fair a nice older man seated us and gave us menu's, however I had to go in after waiting and a girl said she would come out to take order, wasn't even busy! Drinks and jacket potatoes ordered, £6.50 for jacket and it was so small I commented to my family it was like a new potato, they laughed but no joke to charge so much for so little, tasted ok, nothing fantastic and small amount of tuna, the side salad to be fair was nice, had to ask for drinks and out came a can of coke and 2 stewed teas, we waited 15 minutes for these. Waitress apathetic, asking for salad cream took 2 attempts. I always give credit where due and rarely give bad feedback but all I can say is 'Don't Bother!'

This cafe has been on my list to eat at but I never had the time before. Now I am retired - it was a sunny day so we went for lunch. Our small dog Milo was with us and as we arrived we were greeted warmly, a bowl of water was brought out for Milo and we sat down. Lovely menu and with their help we had the most marvelous meal. Everything was cooked to perfection and presented really nice. The donuts machine was not on so we had pancakes - the best we had ever eaten - mine had the "works". The staff so friendly and polite and service was outstanding. Just wish I had been before, but now we know.

Walking on the sea front we decided whilst the sun was out and before the rain came we would stop for a cuppa in Rebecca's my daughter is called Rebecca so it was chosen for that reason. We only just sat down and straight away our dog was brought a bowl of water along with our menus. How lovely a touch was that, we only had an expresso a cup of tea and a toasted fruit slice each as it was only mid morning but I would have no problem eating anything off the menu the place is absolutely spotless and the owner I think is Italian and family run they have been there for over 20 years their love of their job showed in their customer care. Will defiantly return and hope to have something more substantial as the food we did see looked amazing.

For such a small place the service and food is fabulous. Ate there often and aways ensured great service. Staff friendly, helpful and so polite. BEest place on the seafront.

We come down to sealife for my daughters birthday and she fell asleep was looking for somewhere to eat, looked narrow and nowhere to put pram inside and was cold but the owner was very nice and helpful and said it was absolutely fine to come in with the pram in the walkway and helped us to a place down the back. Very family run little place but food was delicious had the big breakfast and so did my bf with a cup of tea, was really lovely, and his service was great, pretty sure he was serving and cooking, really was impressed. Could tell there were some locals in for food and other return customers, would definitely return here. Price was cheap and reasonable too, lovely little place with decent food and great service.

You must visit this place if you go to Southend for the best fish and chips. The dogs were welcomed The cod was white and flakey with crispy batter. Perfect in every way. Dimitris will even play some Greek music if you ask him ! Yamas

My friend and I stopped by on a cold wet February day with 2 dogs and were welcomed in to the café. Demetris was very friendly and we chatted and sang with him and had a fabulous time. The fish and chips was fabulous and nothing was too much trouble.

Happened on this welcoming, warm cafe by chance after visiting Santa with the family. Nothing was any trouble they couldn’t do enough for us. The food was very well cooked and well presented. Thoroughly recommend it.

Friendly place opposite fun fair pier etc. Outside seating , omelettes, some sea food, toasties, burgers bit more choice than most sea front eateries. Kids menu. Lasagne £8, King Prawns, chips, salad £12.50. Recommended.

This is an absolute gem of a cafe. We had the Ultimate fish platter to share, and the quality of the food was amazing. Very generous amounts and all served quickly. Excellent value for money. The owner was charming and very attentive. We look forward to returning soon.

Clean family run cafe selling really good food. Chips were crispy and fluffy fish was crumbly and perfect batter. Hot dogs were proper sausages and huge. And the milkshakes were awesome homemade milkshakes. We all enjoyed 10/10

Our family (2 adults and 2 children age 7 & 5) had lunch here in August 2018 during our vacation in the UK. The cafe is directly next to the seafront just on the opposite site of the street from Adventure Island. It is a small place with a huge amount of charm. The food is simple but freshly prepared and of good quality with generous portions. Our kids had Ham Egg and Chips as well as Lasagne with Chips. My wife had the Gammon Steak with Pineapple and I had the Bulldog Hot Dog with Chips and Onion Rings. All the food was very good, the wait was short and the service was friendly. All in all a great place for a quick lunch!

My friend and I went to southend for the day and decided to have a quick bite to eat and came accross this café. We had such a good time. The family who runs it is so nice, attentive and friendly. You feel like a VIP and are looked after so well. I would highly recommend and the food is lovely too.

My 60th, and a Southend girl. My friends said they'd take me home, so we've just had a great weekend in Southend. All Day Breakfast with Dimitri and his daughter Rebecca at the pier. Dimitri came to Southend 25 years' ago, and named his cafe after his daughter. I came 'home' to Southend with friends for my birthday. Cafe Rebecca is perfect for good 'native' Essex food, well cooked and a good price. If you're lucky, Dimitri might kiss you! S'Agapo Dimitri. ευχαριστώ

Along the front there are dozen and dozen of little cafes. Cafe Rebecca is built into an arch on the esplanade (like the others) on the estuary of the Thames.

I was very impressed with the excellent selection of food, very reasonable prices and excellent quality food.

We popped in on a drizzly grey day, and were very happy to be greeted by a super friendly owner, and a great menu for a small cafe. I cannot recall when I have had a better toasted bacon and egg sandwich! Good coffee too, and very reasonable prices. I would absolutely recommend the food and will be returning next time we are in the area.

Visited with my mum and son today, the food was delicious best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. Staff all very friendly. I would highly recommend Cafe Rebecca and will definitely go there again when we next visit Southend.

We had arrived in Southend for the first time by paddle steamer , looking for somewhere to eat - and were given a great welcome by the proprietor , and quickly served a tasty lunch - afterwards we called a taxi and the proprietor was kind enough to go out into the road to await its arrival and escort us to it

Simple seaside food. OAP fish and chips available for over 60s. Had inside and outside seating although outside you risk the seagulls.

Perfect lovely fluffy fresh donuts, served with a smile. Good pitstop for a snack before or after the pier.

We spent the day in Southend with our two grandchildren. When it came to dinner time we wanted something a bit different. We walked along the parade of restaurants and takeaways. All severing much the same. We can across Rebecca's. It's a small place, there's about 8 tables, small benches and 4 can just about fit. Not ideal for tall people. There's seating outside but and we had just had a deluge of rain it wasn't an option.

Went with family managed to get a table for six outside all of us had fish and chips excellent fresh fish and crispy batter with mushy peas. Staff very friendly and bought out two doughnuts for the sleeping grandsons to have later. If in Southend looking for good fish and chips would highly recommend

We were looking for a place to eat by the pier and end up going to Rebecca cafe. It looked like a simple family run place and we decided to give it a try.

I'm so pleased I came across this fantastic place on the 24th of August. The cod was beautiful in fresh batter. The staff couldn't do anymore to make me and my children welcome, even let my son make up his own kids meal that wasn't on the menu, which no other place would take the time to do. The only think that put a downside on my visit to Cafe Rebecca was the rude group of people on the next table. They were asked if they wanted a portion of mushy peas, then went in a rage at the lovely young gentleman who was serving them charged them for the mushy peas. I ordered a a portion of of bean with my fish and chips, it's clearly noted on the menu as extras at a cost. Anyway the owner let me and my children move to a another place table as my son was becoming upset. Thank you Cafe Rebecca for making us comfortable and for the fantastic food. We will be able to back

The food was nice (apart from the bone in my cod. ...) but when we questioned the bill the staff became incredibly rude!

IT WAS A VERY HOT SUMMERS DAY, CAME DOWN TO SOUTHEND EARLY, SO WE ALL HAD BREAKFAST TO START WITH, VERY DELICIOUS FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST, then dinner, later on after a long day out on the pier, etc. after about two-three hours later, we all came back to cafe rebecca to have our lovely dinners, which was fish and chips, which was absolutely delicious. FIRST CLASS ATMOSPHERE AND CUISINE. WELL DONE TO CAFE REBECCA

With so many other places nearby, we chose well here. The friendliness of the owners, the fantastic quality of the food and the reasonably priced and large menu made our vist very enjoyable. Why go anywhere else?

I have searched the name of this place on google maps after stopping there on Saturday afternoon and receiving amazing service. They were about to close but seeing us come in they said it was absolutely fine, we were very grateful . Food came out quickly and was very tasty the kids meals were great and lots of choice. The waiter (lovely guy from Albania) couldn't do enough for us and was amazing with the children, will definitely go back!

There are a few restaurants/cafes situated under the famous Southend Pier and we were approached by all of the cafe owners to enjoy a pensioners' bargain meal at a similar price but we were enticed by the Italian greeting at Cafe Rebecca. It was a very hot day and we almost felt we were in Italy, with the tables and chairs outside and the friendly Italian greeting. First of all we were given a large mug (on a saucer) of tea which we enjoyed until our meal was served. A medium sized piece of cod covered in golden batter with a fresh slice of lemon on top, accompanied by golden chips. The meal was delicious and the tea was superb and very welcome. Although we chose the pensioners' bargain meal, we could have dined on an amazing variety of menus which were displayed on the boards. You would have to have an enormous appetite to tackle an amazing dish to share with just about every type of meat dish you can imagine. There was also the offer of swordfish and lamb shanks, plus much more on the menus. You are certainly spoilt for choice. We received first class waiter service and have certainly made a note to pay Cafe Rebecca another visit when we are next in Southend.

Visited here on a cold Sunday morning in May with my Fiancee and 6 year old son. The positives of this café certainly outweigh any negatives (the only negative being the bill of £25.30). So the positives were the quality of the food, the prompt, warm and friendly service and the feel of the place. We had 2x veggie breakfasts, 1 portion of chips, 2 cokes, 2 teas and 2 OJs and the price as I said was £25.30. I personally think this is a little on the expensive side but you are paying for the location (café set in an archway which is a stone's throw from the pier and lift to the high street). We got there at around 1015 and there were a few tables being waited on but the service was quick. We had food to the table within about 10-15 minutes of sitting down. No complaints there or even how the food looked or tasted. It was hot when it came out (always a bonus). Inside, the seating area are benches with their own tables. Each bench could sit 3 people, so 6 round a table. There is also seating outside (3 to a table, 4 at a push) which is basically on the pavement. Outside however, you can smoke but if you don't mind that then you can quite easily watch the world go by.Overall a good visit and I think I had been there before a few years back and from what I can remember, not much has changed. We would go back but maybe just for a drink. Still, this is a good café in a good location and I suspect in the height of the summer or if the weather was warmer, it would be packed out with customers.

Stopped off here on bank holiday Monday to have a drink served by a very polite helpful waiter who even supplied water and dog biscuits for out dog.We had only been there a short time when the rudeness of an elderly waiter marred the moment as he rudely stated if ' you've finished (which my wife hadn't) leave the table as it's our lunchtime and we need the table'At this time there was anouther table available and at no time was we told you had to eat ,in fact we had stated that we were only having a drink to the original waiter.Won't stop here again there's nothing wrong with politeness.

We were looking for a place to grab lunch on a visit to the coast. Rebecca's had a wider variety on their menu than the neighbouring cafes, so we stopped in for a sandwich.We were greeted by friendly staff and our order was taken quickly. Service was fast and we were impressed by the quality of the food. The use of fried bread in the sandwiches is highly recommended and the salad was fresher than I have had anywhere else.The cafe was clean and tidy, tables were cleared quickly ready for new custom. There was a good atmosphere during our visit, with the friendly staff encouraging new custom. I will definitely drop in for recovery food when I run a Half Marathon in Shoeburyness in July!

A quick stop for drinks and a plate of donuts. Excellent, prompt service - homely mugs of tea and coffee and the best warm, fresh, soft donuts I've ever tasted.

I visited her with a group of young adults with learning difficulties. The owner made us all very welcome and nothing was too much trouble for him.

Stopped for caffeine and some lunch, very friendly staff, great service and the food was top notch - will be back next time we are passing through Southend sea front most definitely.

We love this little cafe. The food is really, really good and the staff are lovely. They have a good variety to choose from and they're great with the children. We first ended up eating here as we had vouchers for another venue but they couldn't sit us for over an hour - Cafe Rebecca is now our place of choice to get food when we are at the seafront in Southend. They make you feel very welcome and they cook excellent food!

Found this quaint little restaurant almost by accident, we were looking to see if we could find anywhere to eat whilst out with our dog , we were standing outside trying to see if dogs were allowed in when one of the owners came out and invited us in ( along with our dog) , we enjoyed a great meal and dessert ( couldn't resist as they were homemade and delicious) , the staff could not be more friendly or eager to please, and they even provided water for our dog as well , would definitely recommend this place to anyone , and will certainly return on our next trip to Southend .

Stopped in last week for a coffee. Very impressed with the cleanliness and atmosphere. I spoke with a young man who was only on his second day in the job and he was very polite and a credit to the place. I will definitely visit again, next time for food and a longer chat.

Called in for a hot drink before going for a walk on the pier.We had a great welcome from the owner and staff we decided to return after our walk. Excellent food enjoyed by all.We will defiantly visit again.
