Broccoli Soup was watery and too salty. Cheese scones to accompany were unavailable at 1.00pm lunchtime. Bruschetta at £9.50 consisted of a very modest slice of toasted sourdough with some tomatoes and a small amount of mozzarella with a few salad leaves. Very poor value even for overpriced Edinburgh.

This used to be a reasonable spot for lunch, but I wouldn't recommend it now. the menu is now pretty minimal and lacks choice. I chose the soup which was clearly displayed next to the ordering point. We waited over 20 minutes while people at surrounding tables who had ordered after us were served. Worse, when our soup came, it was not the one we had ordered. They told us that they had run out of the soup we had ordered. So, without asking, they had substituted another. No question of allergies or even preferences. And 20 minutes to warm up some soup!

Unfortunately we had an utterly appalling time. I had booked what I thought was a £17 a head afternoon tea for a special afternoon tea for my mums 70th birthday. I had phoned a few days before to update dietary requirements and spoke to a helpful member of staff who confirmed my booking and stated there was no shellfish in the afternoon tea. On arrival we were curtly greeted by a surly member of staff who showed us to a small grubby table wedged in the corner between 2 large noisy family groups. I went up to enquire about the afternoon tea to be told they didn't do it and had stopped months ago. I explained that its available to book and I had booked it as a special treat for my mum. The girl disputed this but I explained I had even spoken to someone and had it confirmed. She said they could maybe put something together but 15 mins passed and all she had done was put some big chunks of unappetizing leftover cake on a plate. This was not what we were expecting or wished to pay £17 ahead for so we left . With the rugby about to come out we had no prospect of getting anything else anywhere else so we went to M and S and bought afternoon tea supplies. I am still incredibly upset and disappointed about the special occasion I had planned that was utterly ruined by grotesque incompetence.

Worth popping to the cafe here. Modern 1 has more food choice and has outside seating which is great in the summer but it can be quite crowded. Here, the table service was quick with no queue. Nothing worse than a long walk around an art gallery and no place to get a nice cuppa afterwards. No problem here! Here is a great little coffee shop with very friendly staff and a great selection of cakes and pastries. Chose the lemon and ginger cake with my coffee and relaxed for a while. Staff were chatty when I enquired the origins of the building, which I understand to be a Victorian orphanage which is now one of two buildings holding the modern art collection of the Scottish National Gallery. Impressive building, nice coffee shop. Worth a visit.

My in-laws, partner, and I, enjoyed a lovely lunch in Modern Two. The food was excellent, service was good with pleasant staff. We had booked a table but upon arriving the table hadn't been reserved for us which was disappointing, hence the four the stars. However, the maitre'd quickly organised a table for us so we only had a ten minute wait. (And we had a nose around the goegeous gift shop!) They were extremely busy during the lunchtime rush and we had another wait for our first course too, but when it eventually arrived, the food was delicious, fresh, and well presented. And the cakes and baking were gorgeous. I have to say, their coffee is excellent too. In all, it was a lovely lunch. And special thanks to the lovely maitre'd who was so helpful and friendly, arranging a table for us as quickly as she could. Perfect location for friends, couples, and small family groups but I'd say it's more suited to adults and older kids. Will definitely visit again.

We called in for brunch before visiting an exhibition. We have been before and thought it ideal for what we were looking for. My partner had the soup which was nice and amply portioned. I decided on the mackerel pate which again was a good choice but I was slightly deterred by our waitress. When I asked if I could have the pâté with bread instead of oatcakes I was told that all dishes come as described in the menu but she would check. When she returned to give us cutlery I had to specifically ask again before being told that it was not possible. I get it, not the end of the world but it wasn’t as thought I was rewriting the menu, especially considering other dishes (including the soup) were accompanied by a variety of different breads. Coffee and red wine complimented the meal nicely. Would highly recommend for coffee, meeting friends or just if you are seeking some solitude.

So glad we stopped at the cafe for lunch. I had the best roasted pumpkin risotto. Rice was cooked down to creamy perfection. (Don’t you just hate it when the risotto is semi grainy hard and it still gets served) None of that nonsense here, it was sooooo good. Dish was so tasty and roasted pumpkin just complemented, elevated and completed the dish. I have had three risottos this winter In Edinburgh and this was definitely the tastiest, best presented, best cooked risotto.

We visited here for lunch. It was busy but the gentleman did his best to find a table as quickly as he could. Other customers waiting were more 'nippy'. Food was slow in coming and the £8.90 sandwich was fine, if you like cheap supermarket brown bread. The salad was poor, and the 'handmade crisps' (which I read as chips and was looking forward to!) didn't come. I asked where they were and waitress - without eye contact - said they'd run out. No sorry, no alternative, tough. My wife's salad had pieces of cooked carrot in it and the oatcakes were foostie. I've been here several times, and enjoyed it greatly, so this trip was a big disappointment. I did get 15% off for complaining however. Have they changed suppliers? Staff? Short staffed? Low on fresh good food?

While the food was nice enough, the service was painfully slow. We saw our drinks order go to at least two other tables before finally coming to us. Was difficult to ever make eye contact with any of the waiters when we wanted them. My cappuccino was almost cold, probably from sitting on the counter for so long. I think they need more staff on busy days (it was a bank holiday when we went) and the waiters need to be more attentive to their tables.

Firstly, the coffee is good and there is a reasonable selection of food (only 2 gluten free cakes, though). The waiting staff are very pleasant. So what is the but? Well, firstly when we went there was only one waitress who was 'run of her feet' and so service was a bit slow but not too bad, and certainly, not the waitresse's fault. More annoyingly, if you sit in the room with the coffee machine (there are two rooms), the noise is awful. This is really a result of the poor acoustics in this old building but nevertheless, at times, it was difficult to hear the other person speak.

If the words ‘afternoon tea’ conjure up soggy white bread egg or cucumber sandwiches and cup cakes with lurid icing, sprinkles and silver balls that chip your teeth, then think again, and head for the cafe run by Heritage Portfolio at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two in Edinburgh. Our daughter gave us a voucher for afternoon tea here and a couple of days before Easter we took ourselves off for a treat. Watercress and courgette soup appeared on a slate platter with cheese scones with chilli jam and goats cheese, and three different types of brown bread sandwiches with delicious fillings - salmon and lemon crème fraiche, ham and wholegrain mustard, and brie with peeronata and spinach. This was no traditional afternoon tea, but a refreshingly modern take on the old favourite. Everything was made freshly for us – the description being ‘scratch kitchen’ (the reason afternoon tea has to be booked beforehand) with everything cooked, baked or assembled made from scratch. Fresh and seasonal produce are used where possible. The slate platter cleared, a cake stand made an appearance with an array of goodies that had me wondering how we were expected to munch our way through the contents of its three tiers. A tour around came up with mini fruit scones with cream and berry jam, cherry bakewell, caramel shortbread, apple and berry crumble, lemon posset, orange macaroon and caramel shortbread. My waistband was under strain at the glorious sight of it all.So if you intend to be in or around Edinburgh and fancy giving yourself a wee treat in interesting arty surroundings, or can persuade a daughter, son or husband to treat you (or give you a café gift voucher), then head for the Gallery of Modern Art Two, sit back and be tempted. You won’t be sorry.

For such a fabulous art experience and surroundings I was severely disappointed. The menu was severely limited and with a nut allergy and a gluten intolerant in our group there wasn't much to choose from for them. Actually there wasn't much to choose from for anyone. Croque Monsiuer and soup was the majority vote and we had booked and were all hungry, it took a very long time - at least half an hour - to get reheated soup (heated in the microwave, top layer coolish but almost dangerously burning hot in the middle) and a toasted sandwich. Expensive for what we got and the time it tookIt was OK is all I can say.According to one of our party the cafe across the road in the other gallery is much better value with a better choice and better service but you can't book

This cafe has great service and a beautiful setting in the subtly yet radically conversion of the Dean Orphanage into Edinburgh's Modern Two (and this building deserves a more distinguished name to acknowledge its past, its context and its specific significance, to the permanent collections, Paolozzi's gift, and the NGS' home). Teas (and, I assume, coffees) are varied, properly made and served, and accompanied by a good range of delicious cakes. More substantial fare is provided at Modern One, so the two complement each other and set themselves up well for a full day enjoying both galleries and their landscape.

My husband and I dined in the cafe on Thursday 23rd and I have to say it was the most delightful afternoon tea we have ever had. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, the service was just perfect! Would highly recommend this cafe to anyone. We will be back!

Not only was the room cold, the food was uncomfortably cold to eat. I got the feeling everything is made for convenience, sell food that would normally be sold hot as cold, then they don't have to bother cooking or heating to order, or pay for someone to do it. I could not wait to get out to heat up. Unfortunately I had a severe upset tummy afterwards and had to stay in the gallery for a lot longer than planned, so not to be too far from a toilet. I think the food was fine, but the exceptional cold it was served at upset my stomach. It would be nice to have the space heated and have some warm food on the menu, other than tomato soup.

Very friendly and helpful staff and fab afternoon tea. We popped in for afternoon tea after attending the two Roberts exhibition and can throughly recommend this cafe. The afternoon tea consisted of a slate plate with an expresso cup filled soup, 3 types of sandwich fingers each - ham, egg and cheese with the most stunning plum chutney, and a cheese scone. The sweets consisted of scones, brownie etc. All in all excellent!

I bought an itison voucher for afternoon tea for two. I'm so glad I had the voucher as I would have felt seriously short changed if I had paid the full price of £30. The cafe was really busy and there were only 2 members of staff on. They were lovely and didn't seem phased by how busy they were. The afternoon tea was comprised of a small cheese scone cut in 2 with a pesto topping, 6 tiny finger sandwiches and 2 small cups of soup. The sweet tray had 2 tiny, past their best scones, a muffin quartered and a brownie also quartered. Everything tasted lovely but there wasn't much of it and certainly not enough to justify the normal price of £30.I would go back for a coffee and a whole cake to myself though.

Our family party of arrived in plenty of time for our 2.30pm afternoon tea reservation & we did not receive anything to eat until after 3.15pm by which time we were ready to eat the napkins off the table. Each time we went up to the counter to tell staff that we were still waiting we received the same speil about "eveything being prepared fresh & this takes longer..." how long does it take to make 4 sandwiches & plate up some cake & scones?By the time we had waited 45 minutes & made our final trip to the counter to speak to staff (no-one was coming near our table to explain the wait) the waitress told us very loudly for all tables to hear, that the wait was our own fault due to our 'special dietary requirements'. All we had requested was not to have any meat in our sandwiches, smoked salmon fine, cheese, etc fine, just no animal meat. Surely not beyond the capacity of most restaurants?

After viewing excellent Two Roberts exhibition...Lovely meal, coffee, and space as well as fine service. My only distraction was the din from diners -?- but perhaps from piped-in music, which in many places is too loud and rather unnecessary. I do recall annoying, recurring <beeps> coming from the shop; I think the helpful staff there were taking inventory with hand-held wands that were part of the aural nuisance: Every single item=<beep!>. Talk about the unwanted sound of everything we want. Also, outer door at entry was being held ajar, letting in much frigid air. Brrrrrr.

Friendly service and good food made on the premises is a nice combination to see. For Mother's Day think about the afternoon tea option.

What a shame your reviewer gave this poor review and low rating on the basis of two coffees. Cappuccino was obviously offered and it would have Beeb strange had they not been served with chocolate dusted on top!Pity they hadn't tried the excellent freshly cooked food served efficiently and with a smile. I was there on 27th January with a pal and gave them full marks. Well worth a visit and the current exhibition on the two Roberts.

What a great find Cafe Modern 2 is for lunch and incredible afternoon tea - and now they are doing a delicious brunch too.Loved the Artisan Bacon roll with a zingy tomato relish and the Eggs Benedict were cooked to perfection, topped off with a rich and creamy Hollandaise sauce - perfect Sunday morning food. Wonderful surroundings and looked after by the friendliest and cheerful waiting staff in Edinburgh. Not to miss out we took away an outstandingly tasty Belgian Chocolate Brownie and Salted Caramel Slice - definitely going back again soon!

Popped into the café at Gallery of Modern Art Two for a quick coffee while out on a walk along the water of Leith recently. Had a very nice flat white and was tempted to have a piece of almond and apple cake which was also good. Staff very pleasant. Nice place to stop into at that end of town. The Art is pretty good too !

We visited Café Modern 2 on Tuesday 14 October and ordered 2 cappuccinos. There was a lot of bumf on the table about their 'made from scratch' ethos and local sourced raw materials. Unfortunately, they can't make coffee. Ours comprised 2 cups of hot milk with a showering of cheap chocolate powder, which we never asked for. When my wife informed the young male at the cash desk, who had made the drinks, about their dismal quality, he just shrugged - something we will be doing next time we visit the gallery and fancy a coffee.

Personale gentile e premuroso.

Pretty standard fair for a Costa but the queues inside can take a while to get moving. If you're short of time, make sure to go through the drive thru instead as that moves at double the speed of inside

We wondered around many other places and decided for this places because of the initial kindness of the waitress when we where passing by and had a question. Went back for lunch and had a great lentil soup, salmon with salad and green juice. We decided to go back the next day, as we wanted something different from the regular pizza, hamburgers and such offered around. It did not disappoint, great place, very small and wonderful views of the castle

This was my first time here, and It was very good! My only complaints were that the drinks came a while before the food & that the small breakfast egg was quite greasy. The food tasted great though & the presentation was lovely. The tables were cleared efficiently as customers left & it was overall a rather peaceful atmosphere. Would recommend.
