Cafe Mauds Newcastle in Down

We had lunch here while on a short break in Co Down and we were very impressed with both the food and the staff. I had quiche, chips and coleslaw and it was delicious. My husband had chicken gougeons and chips and really enjoyed them. The lemon meringue pie was yummy and it is rare to get good quality green tea in a restaurant. It was the staff, especially the manager who made the experience so pleasant for us. She was so friendly and helpful, and even though they were so busy she took time to speak to us and made us feel welcome. We went back the following day and we were not disappointed. Again we enjoyed the food, and the manager and the girls were pleasant and helpful. We had a table overlooking the sea this time which was nice. We look forward to going back again next time we are in Newcastle, and we would definitely recommend this place to eat in. We give staff and food top marks.

Food was burnt and black.Disgusting.We had the fry me and my husband today.never will be back. The staff were not friendly

Absolutely shocking. As a family at Christmas we got four litre tubs, to say they weren’t full is an understatement but we let it go as it’s a busy time of year. I was in tonight to get 1 litre tub at £8.25 and to say it’s just over half full. It’s a joke. I asked the server to fill the tub full as I am paying for a full tub, the server gave me a dirty look and put the lid on. That is just rude, no customer service. I have been served by this young lady before and she shouldn’t be working with the public.

KFC is extremely expensive now. I won't be back for a while. I'd rather go to the Dundrum Inn for a chicken stack, a lot more chicken and not that much dearer.

I had promised an English friend the best ice cream in Ireland so we drove to Mauds today 7th Dec about 2pm. The weather was atrocious and we were looking forward to a nice coffee and ice cream. We entered the shop and in front of us were two rows of empty ice cream containers apart from two containers of indescribable unappealing mush, ok, it’s winter, I didn’t expect every flavour to be displayed. We chatted and waited at the “Please wait here to be seated” sign and waited, and waited, and waited while 2 employees were chatting and making coffee and another employee was chatting to them. Now, I understand if they had been run off their feet but there were only about an dozen people there and after 3 minutes of waiting, standing trying to at least catch someone’s eye we decided we would take our business elsewhere. Why give money to people who can’t be bothered to even look at you? All in all I was disgusted and very embarrassed by my experience today and certainly will not be through the doors again.

Husband and I went in today and ordered two sourdough bread cheese/ bacon sandwiches. They were amazing and we really enjoyed the beautiful view as we ate. The young waitress who served us was absolutely brilliant. She really went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. Would absolutely return

I went in to mauds this morning to get a scone to take out , the member of staff was very friendly and helpful and asked if if I needed butter jam or a tea she was so helpful and pleasant everytime I go here the staff can not do enough for me thank you all

Such a bad experience, ordered coffees, pancake, grenola and breakfast sandwich. After waiting a long time the pancakes came out and all seemed good, that's when all things changed. 1st of all the coffees came 10 minutes later. 2 should have been caramel latte but they was no caramel. We had to take them back and wait for service. I asked a waitress if she could put in some caramel she said she did not know what to do and would need to ask someone. The lady in charge came and instead of adding caramel she searched for the receipt to check we had paid the extra, she kept saying something about cinnamon and it was not till I get back to the table with cold lattes that I realised they had been put through the till wrong and now had cinnamon and caramel syrup. They should have been replaced how can a manager run a business like this?? Finally the rest of the breakfast came out, I should have had a sausage egg and bacon in the sandwich. All I got was sausage and miserly bit of bacon and no egg. It had to go back to the kitchen. There was no apology, it was like this is how the Place normally operates. I don't even understand why the grenola did not come out with the pancakes. The place really is a joke!

Wife and I ordered breakfast .waited 20 mins , 2other tables who came in after got served just b4 us. Staff all over the place . Had the same experience earlier in year. Thought it might hav got better. It worse. Won’t b back

The bucket of chicken was overcooked and a bit dry....portion of popcorn chicken was£4 something ..and not worth it

A fave when we visit the town. Straight in, met by a lovely staff member who offered us two tables , with a view to getting one big one as soon as it freed up , which was great. Ordered just coffees and drinks today. Short wait for drinks however it was very very busy with a long queue waiting on tables before we left. Prices reasonable.

If I could give zero I would, order completely wrong, food cold. Awful place avoid at all costs.

Terrible. Bathroom was disgusting. No toilet roll. When I asked staff for some the guy just walked away. No word of if he was going to get some or if he was going to hand it to me to do myself. Chips have the skin on them, not like they used to be. Everything was so expensive too. £1.79 or so for a bottle of water. Won't be back

Ordered 2 panini's and pancakes with bacon. Pancakes out pretty quick. My daughter (who is not a fast eater) had completely finished her food prob by 5-10 mins and We finally got ours ( and I did ask for an update). Now I know why you pay upfront! Very disorganised and slow, won't be rushing back!

Arrived mid afternoon . Was quite busy but didn't have to wait long to be shown to a table. Ordered at the till only to be told they had run out of vanilla ice-cream. I should have left at this stage. Ordered 3 ice creams. After about 20 minutes I asked a waitress whatvwas taking them so long. She disappeared and came back saying that they were being made right now. 10 minutes later still no icecreams so asked again. Was assured that they were being made. 10 minutes later I was about to leave and ask for a refund when they arrived. Ice-cream was tasty but they got the order completely wrong. Service was terrible Toilets were disgusting. Floor qwt and sticky with no toilet roll and only one toilet for whole cafe. I will not be back!!!

Why has the recipe changed?;the chicken is horrible the chips are worse and the staff have no idea how to deal with customers. The colonel would be turning in his grave at this mess

Passed the kitchen on my way to the bathroom, absolutely disgusting, no excuse for it on such a busy day, plates and cutlery lined up on the floor, looks like it hasn't had a deep clean in months, fire doors held open by a rock, raw meat sitting out on counters in front of house. A very rude woman who appears to be a manager talking down to young staff members, pressuring them into extra shifts, shouting at them over tables needing cleaned, staff seem stressed and how could they not be with such a rude manager? Avoid at all costs!!!😡😡😡

Slow service although it's clean and food is good

What a wonderful experience we had in Mauds yesterday! The food was excellent, the service very quick and the staff were amazing. Although they were very busy they managed to seat us as a group of 10 and when they realised we were staying in Newcastle for my dads 90th birthday, they brought him a slice of cake with a candle and all stood round and sang happy birthday to him which really made his day. I don't know when we have ever experienced such generosity and kindness while eating out. Such a great experience so good that we went back today for lunch.. a different set of staff but again went to no end of bother to find us a table and were so friendly and personable. Thanks everyone who works there and we will certainly be back next time we are visiting Newcastle.

Food here was very fresh, good, tasty. The service was good. Not many in but still good atmosphere. Would gp in again .

Usual KFC food so no complaints there. Friendly counter staff, but honestly the place is a mess. Twice I've been in so far and both times the floors and tables have been absolutely disgusting. Thank heavens I carry wet wipes with me. I don't think I'll be back again.

The best KFC in Northern Ireland.

What a fantastic find when we went to Cafe Maud, in Newcastle. The cappuccino was the BEST I have ever tasted. So delicious, I had another! As well as their wonderful pancakes, with bacon and maple syrup, plus my husband had scrambled eggs on sourdough toast. Food was ace! Service excellent. Highly recommend. We will definitely be going again and again!

We arrived this morning and a group of 6-8 cyclists ordered in front of it … we were only looking 2 Americano coffees and 2 sausages for our 2 year old son …. We were told the kitchen was backed up and there would be a 20-30 wait for our order …. When I questioned the wait for 2 sausages I got told they were very busy … 6-8 single orders should not be considered very busy when many other establishments in Newcastle are much larger and have less staff ‘floating about’ …. We are locals and rarely go here because of how slow the service is …. We decided this morning to give it another try after quite a few years but unfortunately the outcome was the same …. The best KFC in Northern Ireland imo. The food is always well cooked, the staff are very friendly and the building is very clean. Obviously during peak times, bank holidays, summer holidays etc it's very busy but they maintain the same standard year round.

Visited Mauds in Newcastle for quick lunch. You are told to grab a menu as u go through the door and find your own table. There is construction built outside the cafe, so you look through this when viewing the sea. We decided on a club pinini which was served with chips. This is usually large, so we bought one to share. The order is put in at the counter. A short time later, our pinini arrived. What a disappointment. It looked miserable. It looked like ciabata was used. In side there was a small piece of chicken, a small piece of streaky bacon ( in my husbands), some wilted lettuce and tomato. Also on the plate were a few chips and few leaves lettuce with ? Balsamic on them. It was v dry, but with some sauce, it was edible. Hubby had lemon merengue pie. The slice was v small for the price. He said it was nice. The staff were friendly and plentiful. We were disappointed with our meal and will be trying somewhere different next time we r in Newcastle.

Arrived for Drinks and treats and placed what we thought would be a reasonably easy order on aa quiet weekday morning. Ordered 4 hot drinks, 4 traybake/apple pies and 2 ice creams. One hot drink arrived within 30 secs, then 5 minutes later 3 more and one of the traybakes. After a 15 minute wait all of the drinks had arrived, been consumed as getting cold, but no sign of the apple pie or icecreams. The manager then went searching for the receipt for our table as if to double check that we had actually ordered what we were waiting for which made us feel like we were guilty of something. During the 25 minutes we had waited before the apple pie arrived, the manager/owner, spent her time pushing people through the till as quickly as possibly, getting the money off them and then trying to move to the next customer, no interest in people getting what they had paid for. Staff were like headless chickens, making drinks then shuffling though receipts to see who they had made them for. The food and coffee is actually quite good, which i would think could be the hardest part to get right, however the art of putting a traybake on a plate and getting it to the customer seems to be something that Mauds cant deliver.

On arrival you have to take a menu to your table and then come back up to the till with your order. So service was a bit chaotic as it wasn’t clear if people were paying, ordering or just looking at the cakes. The service was disorganised and lacked leadership. We were served by the manager who was disinterested throughout. The other staff were helpful. We were given two dirty glasses by the disinterested manager and later given milk with things floating in it. We had a lovely view out to the sea but windows in need of a good clean. Food was ok. This cafe has real potential but clearly isn’t meeting its potential sadly.

Nothing interesting & paying too much for small meal

The food was good but it was way too expensive it cost £6 for just a burger, when you can get a large Big Mac meal at McDonalds for the same price.

Where to start? 10 minutes to order 37 minutes to wait on three waffles and small sized mixim.By the time these arrived my tea had formed icicles and my patience hit sub zero! Poor show

Extremely dirty sit in area and greasy food, not impressed at all.

Despite sitting 2mtrs from the counter, I could not hear my order being called, staff muttering towards the floor. Even when I produced my ticket, mumbling incoherently. Whether it was mine or not, tasted good, fast, clean, plentiful.

Had a really nice lunch here with a friend. The place was really busy but staff were still super friendly and the food was delicious. We'll definitely be back
