Cafe Marmalade in Brighton and Hove

In the top 3 of my favorite places in Brighton, everything is lovely, food, service and atmosphere !

First time I've been to Marmalade. It was charming, welcoming and had a good selection of food and drink. Food was delicious and the coconut/chocolate chunk cake with my coffee was out of this world. Would totally recommend this place

Don’t go if you have a pram not pram friendly but very good other than that

Five stars does not do justice to Marmalade. Phenomenal and exceptional. If you haven’t been, go. You will go back.

A great, cozy coffee shop which is the only place in Kemptown that is open later than 4pm!!!! They have a lovely selection of salads (the chickpea broccoli salad was amazing), and loads of toasties but I wish they had a vegan toastie I could’ve had. They do have a couple of vegan cakey treats (today I had the salted caramel flapjack which was lush, but I’ve had their peanut butter loaf cake before which was also delish!). They also have a little grocery selection which is very fancy. I kind of find it funny people moaning about them not taking cash. Isn’t that pretty standard these days for smaller businesses?

Visited Marmalade on the way in to Brighton. Had coffee and toast. Unfortunately, the owner felt the toast was a big too long coming so offered me another coffee. We were so impressed with owners care for her customers, after a long days walk we went back to enjoy a drink before going to our accommodation. The owner recognised us and served us with the accustomed attentiveness. All the food and drink products look and tasted lovely.

All fantastic. The food is great quality and cooked beautifully. It’s so tasty and satisfying. I love the savoury stuff particularly. The cafe has a lovely atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and attentive.

I have no words to describe this place. It's a treat to come here for breakfast. Everything I ate was delicious, with lots of options, each unique and interesting. The staff is very kind, the environment is welcoming and peaceful, ideal for dedicating time to yourself or with friends. A magical place where I left my heart.

Wow! Everything about Marmalade is fantastic! The food is amazing, staff are lovely, atmosphere vibrant. Love this place, wish you were in Lewes too!

I recently noticed that the amount of coffee you get when you bring your own cup keeps reducing. My latest coffee was almost half a cup and almost 20% of it was foam. So I had around 45-50% of my cup was full. I think there is no point to bring your own cup, better pay a but more and get their cartoon cups!

Lovely venue, delicious fresh sandwiches, quiches, tarts and salads. 10% NHS discount for takeaway.

Packed, popular, and pricey, I gotta say their scrambled eggs were the creamiest, fluffiest, most delicious I've ever tasted. How do you do that! I can see why it's so busy!

Amazing place for great food and drinks! Very cosy, stylish and delicious! I want to stay there all day. 😊 I went for full breakfast, with rustic bread toasts, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and avocado. ( sorry, eat it before take a picture 👀) Then I have a juice of the day: beetroot, apple, lemon, ginger and turmeric. Yummy! Fantastic coffee! They’ve got alcoholic and not alcoholic cocktails as well. You can buy plenty of homemade items like jams, honey, bread, organic olive oil, cookies, eggs, fruits, chocolates etc. Highly recommend to visit. It located in Kemptown, close to Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Great food. Had soup although a bit peppery was nice. Amazing chocolate and Guinness cake. Nice coffee. Staff nice but forgot a few things but ok in end. Great cafe for catching up with a friend.

This little cafe is wonderful, what a find. So much beautiful home-made fare on offer. More than generous portions, and the excellent coffee in healthy sized cups, not your average generic high st fodder. Will definitely visit again when in the area.

Very friendly, pleasant staff. Delicious coffee (strong without being bitter) and a truly scrumptious homemade vegan sausage roll - filling not fake meat either. I will be back.

Stopped by on a rainy day. The hot chocolate was just what we needed, and the sweet treats were delicious. The location was great as we were on a walk near the marina

Absolutely love that place. I'm dreading moving out of Brighton because of these guys. Amazing coffee, amazing food, the best quiches in town! Super friendly and efficient staff. Simple but lovely Parisian style deco. What do they put in those fairy cakes that I have to eat 3 or 4 everything I go there? Amazing place!

This place deserves more praise - what a lovely lovely cafe. I visited today and ended up staying for a good few hours working because I didn’t want to leave! The place is Italian inspired but lives by no rules, serving up a whole host of cafe foods, from breakfast to brunch to sandwiches and some banging lunch options too, alongside the huge selection of cakes and bakes and sweet treats. Fully stoked like a deli with fine, local and homemade pantry items, the place is a foodie dreamland! The dhal soup of the day was UNREAL. So flavourful, creamy, and the perfect consistency. A large salad plate full of veggies and hearty salads was a healthy and filling choice too. I also had a creamy and delicious pumpkin spiced latte, though it was a little lacking in pumpkin flavour. The staff were lovely, attentive and the perfect amount of welcoming and chatty, checking up on my food and drinks and quickly taking away used plates and cups. Not to mention the atmosphere, which is bustling and busy given the small space, but charming and cosy! What a cafe, what a place, and the owners should be proud 😁

I had a light snack which was stodgy and uninspiring. I couldn't believe how many staff there were for such a small venue no wonder it's so expensive. The minute I finished my food the staff kept looking over at me as if they wanted me to leave so that someone else could take the table. Yes, it was getting busy but just chill! The whole place felt pretentious and quite frankly stuck-up. Great decor though.

Went here recently, got a carrot & walnut cake and a latte. The cake was DELICIOUS and really moist with such a perfect cream cheese frosting! It was barely even sweet (in a good way), it was just an incredibly enjoyable cake to have with a coffee on the side. If you want a cake that's worth your time - go to Marmalade! Side note: The interior is cozy and the I found the prices to be quite reasonable :)

Amazing place. I feel so lucky to have been there and the girls there are so beautiful with their fashionable dress code on . I want to see them every day

Can’t say I’m a fan but seems popular. Overly expensive for what it is, very slow service, sandwiches are all rather greasy, fridge open to the room so everything is not properly chilled. Terrible parking in the area, very cramped whilst waiting.

Love this place. Great atmosphere, food, coffee, and friendly staff. Go in there a couple of times a week. They sell great bread too.

Beautiful French feeling cafe. Rustic. Busy. Great food. We had the yogurt, honey and granola. Free jugs of water. Good coffee. Cooked breakfasts and take away sandwiches looked fab. Nice selection of deli goods and fresh bread.

We stopped in to Marmalade during a walk from Rottingdean and found the coffee and walnut cake we’d been searching for! Cake was flavoursome and moist. Iced coffee was delicious. Interior was charming and oldy worldly.

What a great location. We had the quiche with salad and a sandwich with ham. All super yummy. The ginger shots really kicked off the immune system. We definitely will come back in the next couple of days.

Nice but expensive. Busy little place which is always a good sign. However, while what they sell is decent quality, it is way over priced. A vanilla doughnut for over £3? Taking customer for mugs. Obviously they are taking advantage of it being the only one of its kind in the area.

Atmosphere, staff, food everything is perfect We will come back again.

Friendly café with nicely old-fashioned decor. Set back from the bustling center, a good place to be calm after the beach. A little high price for good but not incredible pastries either.

Best not to go to places that don't use cash... Croissants are half the size they used to be and not so good.

Very approachable staff. Lovely authentic interior. Limited seating, (not wheelchair accessible/ restricted mobility friendly). Only slightly pricier (£2-£5 per head) than other eateries in town, but flavours of salad and a delicious creamy chicken pie were excellent. N.B. This is, likely, the only really good (upmarket) eatery in an otherwise out of town area.

WHY DONT YOU ACCEPT CASH YOU UTTER HALF WITS!!! SO SO FRUSTRATING YOUR ostracizing those who dont use cards and our nations Legal currency. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU! 6 people that won't be returning and will be boycotting to anyone who's keen to come. A P###ed off local. 👊

Cashless, you utter bigots, your ostracizing a large customer base and putting off even more. A family of 6 that won't be returning and will certainly boycott any promotion to other customers. Costa takes cash! Who wants to go there though 🤷‍♂️.

The atmosphere was nice in the cafe, the staff were OK. However, very taken back by the prices for lunch especially for such small portions! Probably a nice place to go for just a coffee..... But not lunch.

For years I have driven past and thought I must go in there one day, today I did (perfect treat after a hospital appointment) sometimes it is possible to get tired of the city if you have one of those days I prescribe you a visit to Marmalade, it's no wonder Paddington said it was his favourite... adored the gallery seating above the counter, the super friendly workers and some great produce not just awesome pastries like Pastel De Nata but meals to heat at home or deli goods. The Cortado was absowoofly fab-u-lous. After grabbing your coffee stroll around this lovely area and remind yourself how damn good Brighton is.....

Pretentious venue with sour faced staff, not dog friendly (absurd when nice places such as The Savoy allow dogs!)

Really lovely food, very friendly staff! Not from Brighton but will visit again. We offered to move seats to accommodate a party of six, the lady was kind to give me a loaf of bread for our troubles. The bread is lovely!

Came here for a flat white and a chocolate cookie. Both were excellent. Sat on the upstairs balcony, great environment.

This is a little gem in JempTown of Brighton. Great French inspired cafe/ restaurant. Love the Deco of this cafe. Friendly staff and everything is made from local produce which means all food taste freshly made. I love it here, be it coffee and cake or lunch and light dinner. Worth visiting.

So it always has to be re-made (even though I tell them I like my coffee hot when I order), as I'm not willing to pay £4 for a cold cup of coffee. This week, visiting with a friend, I ordered the quiche which I have always enjoyed. The quiche was literally half the size and, as so often, not properly heated up. While the food is nice it is very overpriced. Cutting portions in half means I won't be back. It's a great shame as the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is lovely. But somewhere in all this there has to be value for money. Get real Marmalade, I feel you have lost the plot with your pricing and portions!

I like my coffee properly hot, so I always tell the staff this when I order but they manage consistently to bring a lukewarm cup of coffee, so it has to be re-made as I'm not willing to pay £4 for a cold cup of coffee. Frustrating. Time wasting. Next, I don't like the fact they no longer accept cash. Their reason is break-ins, however, they could put up signs at the door to inform people that no cash will be stored over night and they could have a powerful burglar alarm. Gorgeous cafe with exquisite coffee and goodies

Had always wanted to visit but a little disappointed 😞. Had bacon & sausage sandwich. The meat was just lukewarm like it had been precooked.

Friendly and helpful staff. Great food, really good quality. Ample portions. Reasonably priced.

Fantastic cafe. Have been coming for years. Food and supplies are top notch. Gutted that they have stopped doing proper breakfasts. Otherwise 5 stars! Please bring breakfasts back!

This is the best cafe I’ve ever been to. Every single thing are was delicious, such a good atmosphere and lovely things to buy. I went two days in a row and wish I could come 10 more, it’s unreal!

I have travelled past this place on many an occasion and never been in. Now, twice in a couple of weeks and I live nowhere near Brighton. Really friendly staff, food is great, oh the BLT. I will be back.

Lovely shop, definitely some of the best coffee in Brighton. I went in Monday and the service was great, fast and very friendly staff! The food was also amazing, would definitely reccomend a visit

Sorry, but the worst chai latte I've ever had -- it was mostly oat milk with a bit of flavouring in it. I felt I'd wasted the £4 on it. The vegan sausage roll was okay, but it had a strong curry flavour and wasn't labelled as such. Alas, it wasn't the sausage roll we wanted, but it was okay.

Marmalade is a wonderful little eatery with fantastic fresh food that changes daily. I especially like the salad options and like to mix and match 3 healthy salad options on one plate. The sandwiches, toasties, quiches are all delicious. Plenty of veggie / vegan options. If you like cakes you’ll be spoiled for choice. The staff are friendly and the service is excellent.

I've been here twice in two weeks, purchased cake, and a coffee paid mote the second time, and I couldn't work out why. I also found the cake dry the second time around. 8 think I'll be giving Marmalade a miss

Marmalade is a new discovery and I love, love, love it! The food is delicious and worth every penny plus the staff are really friendly but professional with it. The place is clean and you definitely feel relaxed even when it's really busy. Our new go to place when visiting fabulous Kemptown. Do yourself a favour and check Marmalade out.

A fantastic place for a healthy filling salad and quiche.

Fantastic sandwiches & the biggest, tastiest sausage rolls you could imagine. We were a team day-out with work. The sarnies were delicious & beautifully presented. I would strongly recommend & would definitely use Marmalade again.

Fantastic food. Good coffee. A little cramped but that is because it is so popular and is a firm favourite already. A constant stream of people coming in for take aways and eat ins, is testament to the quality of the freshly made food and drinks

This place really is a gem tucked away in eastern Brighton. Regularly used the cafe opposite for the last couple of years but now it has moved across the road. The food really is top quality; and for those complaining about the price. £6.50 is hardly expensive for a proper sandwich (and I mean proper !) everything is hand made and the desserts are lovely. Will come back to try the coffee …!

Had a late breakfast here on a busy Brighton weekend in late spring and really loved it. Really friendly staff and a great buzzy atmosphere makes this place feel special. We sat upstairs overlooking the cafe and really enjoyed it.

Lovely little restaurant. Friendly Service. Lovely rich coffee. Delicions toasted sandwiches. You can tell a lot of though has gone into balancing the ingredients. Not cheap but worth it. Only slight downside was a few flies buzzing around in the heatwave.

Very good coffee but sadly they don't take cash, even though it's legal tender, so for that reason we won't be back. What a shame.

Recently visited Brighton and ate here 3 times, breakfast/brunch, food delicious every time. Menu changes daily, but I can recommend toasted sandwiches, quiches and cakes. It's usually fairly busy but atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and staff are friendly and helpful,

Not very welcoming unless you like sour faces, small place that’s not certain if it wants to be part of the community or aloof to them, sandwiches normally sold out by 1pm (lunch time) seems very disorganised.

Coffee is amazing and I’m a very fussy coffee drinker. Staff polite and friendly. The vibe inside is very vintage, it looks like an old cottage. I love it!

Staff was friendly however the brownie was a very hard at certain points and there's no Wi-Fi available to customers.... ... Well at least so the cashier claimed, although a 2Ghz and 5Ghz labelled wifi appears but locked. My data was sticking in this area I'm not too sure why, but I left home to come here to study on a Sunday evening and wasted my time... the smoothie was good tho but don't waste your time. Ontop of this the follow day I was messaged by staff in the most rude manner, see pics attached

We've been big fans of Marmalade for a very long time, in its earlier manifestation, and especially grateful for its fantastic take-away outlet, a major boon during lockdown. So we were eager to try the new bistro. The service was efficient and friendly, the food excellent, the ambience attractive. However, it's more pricey than we'd expected, especially the wine. Most significant drawback? The music! Much too loud and intrusive. It's quite a challenging acoustic anyway, but surely conversation is what makes an evening when having dinner with friends ? We found ourselves practically shouting to make ourselves heard......

The new, re-invented Marmalade restaurant is brilliant. I've been on several occasions and love the ever-changing menu. It's small but perfectly formed - the owners and chefs have obviously put a lot of thought into it. The decor and design are lovely - so cosy and inviting. It's the sort of place I can imagine popping into one evening on my own with a good book to treat myself to dinner and a glass of wine. Staff have always been charming, friendly and attentive. The owner is obviously running this place her way - and that's absolutely fine with me! I'm thrilled to have this in my neighbourhood.

I love this place. Like a perfect rural bistro in Northern France. Great food, beautiful decor, lovely pictures, antique crockery and cutlery and a warm welcome.
