The atmosphere was nice in the cafe, the staff were OK. However, very taken back by the prices for lunch especially for such small portions! Probably a nice place to go for just a coffee..... But not lunch.

For years I have driven past and thought I must go in there one day, today I did (perfect treat after a hospital appointment) sometimes it is possible to get tired of the city if you have one of those days I prescribe you a visit to Marmalade, it's no wonder Paddington said it was his favourite... adored the gallery seating above the counter, the super friendly workers and some great produce not just awesome pastries like Pastel De Nata but meals to heat at home or deli goods. The Cortado was absowoofly fab-u-lous. After grabbing your coffee stroll around this lovely area and remind yourself how damn good Brighton is.....

Pretentious venue with sour faced staff, not dog friendly (absurd when nice places such as The Savoy allow dogs!)

Really lovely food, very friendly staff! Not from Brighton but will visit again. We offered to move seats to accommodate a party of six, the lady was kind to give me a loaf of bread for our troubles. The bread is lovely!

Came here for a flat white and a chocolate cookie. Both were excellent. Sat on the upstairs balcony, great environment.

Marmalade used to be my all time favourite ... until recently! I like my coffee properly hot, so I always tell the staff this when I order but they manage consistently to bring a lukewarm cup of coffee, so it has to be re-made as I'm not willing to pay £4 for a cold cup of coffee. Frustrating. Time wasting. Next, I don't like the fact they no longer accept cash. Their reason is break-ins, however, they could put up signs at the door to inform people that no cash will be stored over night and they could have a powerful burglar alarm. Lastly, on my last visit with a friend, the quiche which I have always enjoyed was literally half the size and, again, not properly heated up. The food at marmalade is nice but expensive, cutting portions in half means I won't be back. It's a great shame as the staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is so lovely. But somewhere in all this there has to be value for money. Get real Marmalade, I feel you have lost the plot!

Had always wanted to visit but a little disappointed 😞. Had bacon & sausage sandwich. The meat was just lukewarm like it had been precooked.

Fantastic cafe. Have been coming for years. Food and supplies are top notch. Gutted that they have stopped doing proper breakfasts. Otherwise 5 stars! Please bring breakfasts back!

This is the best cafe I’ve ever been to. Every single thing are was delicious, such a good atmosphere and lovely things to buy. I went two days in a row and wish I could come 10 more, it’s unreal!

I have travelled past this place on many an occasion and never been in. Now, twice in a couple of weeks and I live nowhere near Brighton. Really friendly staff, food is great, oh the BLT. I will be back.

Lovely shop, definitely some of the best coffee in Brighton. I went in Monday and the service was great, fast and very friendly staff! The food was also amazing, would definitely reccomend a visit

Amazing place, coffee and sandwiches!

Sorry, but the worst chai latte I've ever had -- it was mostly oat milk with a bit of flavouring in it. I felt I'd wasted the £4 on it. The vegan sausage roll was okay, but it had a strong curry flavour and wasn't labelled as such. Alas, it wasn't the sausage roll we wanted, but it was okay.

Extremely good food, nice for a breakfast or a lunch. Also nice such a place to stay for study/work. Absolutely recommended!

Marmalade is a wonderful little eatery with fantastic fresh food that changes daily. I especially like the salad options and like to mix and match 3 healthy salad options on one plate. The sandwiches, toasties, quiches are all delicious. Plenty of veggie / vegan options. If you like cakes you’ll be spoiled for choice. The staff are friendly and the service is excellent.

I've been here twice in two weeks, purchased cake, and a coffee paid mote the second time, and I couldn't work out why. I also found the cake dry the second time around. 8 think I'll be giving Marmalade a miss

Marmalade is a new discovery and I love, love, love it! The food is delicious and worth every penny plus the staff are really friendly but professional with it. The place is clean and you definitely feel relaxed even when it's really busy. Our new go to place when visiting fabulous Kemptown. Do yourself a favour and check Marmalade out.

A fantastic place for a healthy filling salad and quiche.

Fantastic sandwiches & the biggest, tastiest sausage rolls you could imagine. We were a team day-out with work. The sarnies were delicious & beautifully presented. I would strongly recommend & would definitely use Marmalade again.

Fantastic food. Good coffee. A little cramped but that is because it is so popular and is a firm favourite already. A constant stream of people coming in for take aways and eat ins, is testament to the quality of the freshly made food and drinks

This place really is a gem tucked away in eastern Brighton. Regularly used the cafe opposite for the last couple of years but now it has moved across the road. The food really is top quality; and for those complaining about the price. £6.50 is hardly expensive for a proper sandwich (and I mean proper !) everything is hand made and the desserts are lovely. Will come back to try the coffee …!

Lovely little restaurant. Friendly Service. Lovely rich coffee. Delicions toasted sandwiches. You can tell a lot of though has gone into balancing the ingredients. Not cheap but worth it. Only slight downside was a few flies buzzing around in the heatwave.

Had a late breakfast here on a busy Brighton weekend in late spring and really loved it. Really friendly staff and a great buzzy atmosphere makes this place feel special. We sat upstairs overlooking the cafe and really enjoyed it.

Very good coffee but sadly they don't take cash, even though it's legal tender, so for that reason we won't be back. What a shame.

Wow back to it's café style arrangement so gorgeous fresh home made foods, I had a cauliflower and cheese quiche light pastry with salads. So tasty shredded beetroot and a sweet potato salad. My partner had a hot cheese scone. Large portions. Pretty good prices. Not sure what happened when it became a restaurant but glad it's back to it's old format. It was crowded 1.30 on a Wednesday.

Recently visited Brighton and ate here 3 times, breakfast/brunch, food delicious every time. Menu changes daily, but I can recommend toasted sandwiches, quiches and cakes. It's usually fairly busy but atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and staff are friendly and helpful,

Not very welcoming unless you like sour faces, small place that’s not certain if it wants to be part of the community or aloof to them, sandwiches normally sold out by 1pm (lunch time) seems very disorganised.

Coffee is amazing and I’m a very fussy coffee drinker. Staff polite and friendly. The vibe inside is very vintage, it looks like an old cottage. I love it!

Staff was friendly however the brownie was a very hard at certain points and there's no Wi-Fi available to customers.... ... Well at least so the cashier claimed, although a 2Ghz and 5Ghz labelled wifi appears but locked. My data was sticking in this area I'm not too sure why, but I left home to come here to study on a Sunday evening and wasted my time... the smoothie was good tho but don't waste your time. Ontop of this the follow day I was messaged by staff in the most rude manner, see pics attached

We've been big fans of Marmalade for a very long time, in its earlier manifestation, and especially grateful for its fantastic take-away outlet, a major boon during lockdown. So we were eager to try the new bistro. The service was efficient and friendly, the food excellent, the ambience attractive. However, it's more pricey than we'd expected, especially the wine. Most significant drawback? The music! Much too loud and intrusive. It's quite a challenging acoustic anyway, but surely conversation is what makes an evening when having dinner with friends ? We found ourselves practically shouting to make ourselves heard......

The new, re-invented Marmalade restaurant is brilliant. I've been on several occasions and love the ever-changing menu. It's small but perfectly formed - the owners and chefs have obviously put a lot of thought into it. The decor and design are lovely - so cosy and inviting. It's the sort of place I can imagine popping into one evening on my own with a good book to treat myself to dinner and a glass of wine. Staff have always been charming, friendly and attentive. The owner is obviously running this place her way - and that's absolutely fine with me! I'm thrilled to have this in my neighbourhood.

I love this place. Like a perfect rural bistro in Northern France. Great food, beautiful decor, lovely pictures, antique crockery and cutlery and a warm welcome.

So pleased Marmalade is back as a bistro . We were big fans of the cafe. We both totally enjoyed our starters of smoked salmon and HM chicken liver Pate . Main courses of delicious mussels and chicken and chorizo stew. Plus wonderful cocktails .Apparently the menu is constantly changing . Friendly service and lovely atmosphere. Looking forward to visiting again.

First visit to the bistro, for lunch. Edited set menu, with 2 choices per main course, with some other options available. We chose the home-cured gravlax and moules marinieres-outstanding quality and taste! V friendly and efficient service. Unfortunately we did not have time to try the dessert menu, which had a number of delicious-looking options; will therefore have to return!

I was exited to try Marmalade’s new bistro menu unfortunately it failed to deliver on many counts. First and foremost with the food which was overpriced and underwhelming. Example, my partner and I ordered the roast cod with lemon and parmesan breadcrumbs which arrived swimming in a pesto like sauce. The fish was over cooked the source over powered everything and neither one of us could finish the dish. The house white was appalling. The waiter was inexperienced and annoying. There was a monologue on how to order which was patronising, as there was only a choice fo three starters, three main courses none of which came accompanied by vegetables/potatoes. These were all at extra cost. It is such a pity because the refurbishment is really appealing and we were regulars at the former cafe. I resent having wasted money on a meal my partner could cook significantly better at home. What a shame. Someone needs to re-think.

Popped in today for a spot of lunch....and we were not disappointed. Lovely food and really nice staff. Lots of choice of food, tables were close and it was very busy but expect that when the place is so popular. Certainly will be back

December 27th. Made a special, for a family breakfast, and it was closed (though it was supposed to be open). Very disappointed.

I called in for breakfast with friends on a cold, windy morning and was enveloped in a friendly atmosphere of people enjoying breakfast. It's a popular place on Eastern Rd. I had a very good scramled egg and bacon on toast, and a pot of tea to myself.

I mean wow! The photo doesn’t do it justice really. It’s quite a pricey breakfast for £9.99 I suppose, but worth it. The scrambled eggs were the best I’ve ever had, creamy and fluffy. And I love having the beans seperately so you can choose where to place them. Everything tasted amazingly fresh, lovely bread too. Would return more often if it wasn’t so busy as it’s a tiny little building for how popular it is.

After seeing this place always pretty busy, I decided to give it a go with my family... And still yet to find what's all the fuss with this place. Looks like a run down shop from the 2nd war world, and the food not so nice. Actually have to send back the soup as has a sickening smell. All the rest was average... Pricey and nothing special. First and last visit.

Wander slightly away from the city centre to Kemptown and you will find this excellent venue for brunch. Be warned, it's popular and be prepared to wait for a table. The service is fast, friendly and efficient, though, and they'll try to accommodate you quickly. This is not the sort of coffee shop to linger in with your laptop, but the bustling friendly vibe makes it a great spot for a bit of people watching over your morning capuccino. The coffee is excellent, as was the almond croissant I had on one occasion. On another I had a lovely yoghurt and honey granola with berry compote, but best of all was the smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast. I added an avocado on the side. It was a substantial breakfast with really creamy scrambled eggs. Turnover is so fast that everything you are served is always super fresh - there are few things in life more unappetising than dry and rubbery scrambled eggs. These are made to order and are outstanding.

We went for a quick breakfast on our way trough. This place is very charming, cosy, good food and the smell of freshly baked stuff made us hungry. I'd advise to pay them a visit!

Seen this place a lot whilst driving back from the hospital. Eventually popped in on Sunday morning and it was a delight although very busy even at 9am. We had scrambled eggs which were cooked to perfection and delicious smoked salmon- the portions are a good size to. I will definitely visit again, the only thing I didn’t like was the cakes being on display and not under cover and people queuing up to order and pay breathing and coughing over them- not pleasant .

Such a great place to get brunch! Don’t try phoning to book - you just walk in. But beware - everyone else thinks it’s great too!

Visited here with my adult children for a late lunch. There was a really good choice in the display and also lots of options on the boards. I had the macaroni cheese which I wouldn’t normally have whilst eating out as they can be very bland, this however was the most delicious one I have tasted. It was deep and creamy with a lovely tang. It was also super filling. The soya chai that I had was also perfect. The others had the salmon and said it was lovely along with the huge hot chocolate they had. Rustic looking little cafe with good table service. This was my third visit, I will return.

Brunched here with girlfriends after a night at the Dome. Gorgeous quiches and superb salads! Sourdough bread went perfectly with my friends sausages and scrambled eggs. Yum. Will visit again next time we are down in Brighton.

We are real foodies and this place is hands down exactly how I'd have a cafe. Great spread of choice (not too much) throughout the day (many places are sold out of this that and the other). I love their decor and the simple look inside. The breakfast was one of the best I've had and thinking about those scrambled eggs make me hungry again. The cakes were fab, drink choice solid and staff smiley and easy going which is what you need. The shop / takeaway across the road is ace too. Although further out, you can visit on the volks railway and the cafe is well worth a visit in my opinion. Try it out and you will NOT be disappointed.

Rustic cafe with great food and coffee can not recommend enough staff are very friendly only downfall is they get very busy but to be honest that's not a bad thing I geuss love it

I just wanted to make sure that all the staff that worked hard to ensure my partner and I had a delicious brunch last week were thanked for it. From the moment we entered we were greeted with genuine hospitality and passion. There was a lovely buzz and energy and everyone knew what their particular role was in this well oiled team. The service was relaxed but attentive, the decor perfect for me, white washed walls, rustic details, slightly nautical and a pile of food bibles that inspire this great little cafe. We were visiting Brighton for our anniversary and had breakfast on two occasions during our visit. If I lived here I would ask for a job. Food was honest and very tasty, excellent ingredients handled with care. I loved it. Go!

Come here quite a bit, great food and snacks, all freshly made on premises. Pretty decent coffees also. Had one of their scones with jam today. Lovely!

Omg we can’t wait to go back , we stayed at the campsite then went for a wander and found Marmalade . Staff lovely , food outstanding. We had salad , chocolate brownie ✅✅ , banana and pineapple cake . We left full but wanted to try more . Amazing . Puts so many chains to shame . Healthy , delicious, naughty what a wonderful food experience. X

While in Brighton we stumbled upon this café as we walked into the centre from the Marina and it was an excellent find! We arrived just before midday for some brunch on a Friday and we appeared to arrive just in time to miss the lunch-time rush as it wasn't long before there was a queue out the door. My partner and I both enjoyed a full english breakfast with coffee, the tastiest brunch we've had in a while. The set-up is casual, you order and pay up-front at the till but after seeing the queue out the door later this made a lot of sense and meant that we were able to leave when we were ready. Across the road they have a small hut that serves coffee and deli items. We popped in here to get another coffee for the remainder of our walk into town.

We are a family of four with different breakfast preferences! This place had something for everyone and we where all very happy with our meals! Further more is the service excellent and the food arrived quickly! We had the classic English breakfast, porridge, banana bread and eggs with salmon! Something good to know is that the portions are very big and sadly we had to leave a lot of food! Overall everything was amazing and we will be back again as soon as we can!

Popped here for a bite to eat - was busy (a good sign) - had to wait a few minutes for a table. Quiche (artichoke, peppers, onions, leeks and more) was light and full of flavour. Salad - at least four different ones with with fan mixtures (lentils, bean sprouts, mango, lemon, pomegranate....)

Quite simply the best place to eat in Brighton! Tasty, fresh homemade food in a lovely homely, relaxed setting. The place was packed when we visited and we had to wait for a while but glad we did - it was great.

Cafe Marmalade has the biggest variety for breakfast. I ended up eating way too much. And enjoyed two great coffees and took away the chocolate cake too.
