Cafe Jacques in Edinburgh, City of

The cafe is small but doesn’t feel like it sitting inside. The service was great and staff very friendly and quick service. Had a cappuccino which was really good and very big at a great price and Mum had a lovely cake with her coffee which was delicious and very fresh and came with some cream. Will definitely be back & would recommend for coffee & cakes. The people beside us got heated croissants & was saying how lovely they were and fresh also. Thank you for a pleasant coffee and cake.

To be honest it was the worst breakfast I’ve have ever had and to make matters worse it was also expensive. I’ve will never return.

There was a Kurdish lady employee who was so friendly and nice. It was raining and she insisted to get us a taxi. Once we arrived at our hotel, we were told that charges has been paid. Many thanks for your hospitality, and I do recommend you visit this cafe. Food was also really good. 🥰🌷

I stopped here for breakfast. Great atmosphere, lovely small cafe but feels spacious inside because of the tall ceiling. I would give this cafe 5 stars if they upgraded their forks. Service was outstanding! Great cup of tea too.

The food at Cafe Jacques was terrible. Nothing was fresh, the baked potatoes were overcooked, and the pastries were dry. The coffee was just okay. The only redeeming factor was the great atmosphere, which earns it two stars.

Staff weren't too welcoming, and we felt like we couldn't stay and enjoy our coffee.

Best tomato soup I've ever tried. The staff is super nice and accommodating. We would have liked to take the children to one of the original pubs on the Grassmarket, which is difficult due to the age restrictions and you feel like you are not welcome. So we went to Jacques Café and were super happy with the choice. Thank you very much.

Very unpleasant welcome after having had a cappuccino on the terrace, we were asked to drink it in 10 minutes because we were not having any dishes.

A simple menu which is reasonably priced. Helpful staff and quick service. We sat inside but outdoors tables are also available!

A wonderful street pavement Cafe in the heart of historic Grassmarket right next to some of Edinburgh's oldest and most famous pubs An amazing place, especially now at festival time for people watching. Today we only had Chai Latte and some delicious cakes but other food looks great and breakfast looks very attractive (See Menus). You cannot miss the cafe with its distinctive blue colour. Inside is small but they have an incredible ceiling painting. Staff were so friendly and helpful. I just wanted to sit there all day soaking up the festival atmosphere. I would like to recommend especially the Honey and walnut Marlenka Cake. An unusual treat popular in Czech Republic 😇 Thank you Cafe Jacques for a wonderful time.

If you want to spend £14 on a frozen burger and undercooked frozen chips with no seasoning you'll love this place

Not the very best burger I've eaten

I’ve been to many tourist traps in many cities and this has got to be the worst. Terrible food at inflated prices.

Unfortunately I am unable to rate the food, service or atmosphere at Cafe Jaques simply because they turned us away because I have a medical alert dog with me. I tried to explain that my dog was registered, insured and extremely well trained and that access was required by law, but that was all ignored as they body-blocked us and backed us out of the cafe. I did think about reporting them to Edinburgh City Council and the licensing authorities but decided that a review stating our problem would probably have more effect. Any premesis, including food premesis, are required to allow assistance and medical alert dogs to stay with their owner under the terms of the Disability Act. Please, please, read up on and follow the law. It's not a pleasant experience to be escorted from the premesis so very publicly and unjustifiably and was very upsetting.

This cafe is situated at Grassmarket in the busy area of Edinburgh.This is a cosy cafe shop with sitting outside too.The menu has lots to choose from.The food was nice and hot but fairly basic.The coffee was very good though.The staff were nice and very quick in moving your plates.Overall nice decor and nice staff.

Located right on the western (castle) end of Grassmarket, we stoped in here for breakfast this week. A small but inviting space with a warm & inviting operator. We ordered juice and a cooked breakfast. Juice was a generous size, which was very welcomed. My cooked Scottish breakfast was fresh & honest. Not the most exciting I’ve ever had, plain white sandwich loaf toasted bread and not an overly large serving, but hot & enjoyable, and very fair value.

Very friendly service. Good coffee, food was OK but not very special (a little bit poor quality.) All the pastries looked very good but we didn't taste any. It's a good place to have a nice little break with a cup of coffee when there is cold outside, but I don't recommend ordering food.

Der Kuchen und der Kaffee waren gut, nichts besonderes aber auch nicht schlecht. Die Bediengung war freundlich. Das Preis Leistungsverhältnis ist eher unterdurchschnittlich. Vor allem habe ich hier für das Flair und Ambiente ein Konzept vermisst. An der Decke eine Lampe mit Palmblättern hinter dem Tresen frische Orangen dazu eine Kuchenauslage mit eher englischen Kuchen die unten wiederum mit ganzen Früchten dekoriert war und dazu dann doch wieder einer Burg ähnliche Steinwand, passt alles irgendwie nicht zusammen und nicht zu dem Feeling unter dem Schloss. Es war in der Summe OK aber auch nicht mehr.

We've been travelling to Edinburgh for many years now and often stay in the Grassmarket area. Cafe Jacques has become our go-to place for breakfast when we're in the area. It's in a great location right on Grassmarket. Friendly staff, cosy small Cafe with a good menu offering something for all tastes/appetites. We've always enjoyed breakfast here and were not disappointed when we returned earlier this month. Very reasonably priced as well.

Absolutely delightful retreat from the cold. Their tomato soup was tasty and homemade accompanied by a soft baguette. Fish and chips were very tasty. Love the crispy crumb on the fish. The honey walnut cake is an absolute delight. So light and not too sweet.

Don't take the croissant! Could have been frozen and was totally flat... Answer to owner: That's inaccurate! The croissant was warmed up and it was awful... It's not believable that you would remember every guest and therefore make the accusation that it's my fault, because I was in a hurry. I had plenty of time!

We bought only a coffee, but this was completely not tasty and for this price...

Not great food - very disappointed. Also, if you have allergies, I recommend staying away. They don't mark their allergens or all the elements that go into their meal. I got a sandwich there and it came with pesto (it didn't mark it on the menu) and then the pesto ended up being made with tree nuts rather than pine nuts. If not for my waitress double checking for me, I would've been sent straight to the hospital. The rest of the staff didn't seem to care much when I brought up the need for items being correctly described on the menu (and ideally allergens flagged). Please be careful here, or better yet, avoid altogether. Their apathy is going to get someone hurt.

Lovely little cafe along Grassmarket. Plenty of breakfast options, which I think were well priced! Plenty of delicious cakes to chose from.

Do NOT go here for anything but coffee. I made the mistake of ordering fish and chips. But that's on me. First time in the city, walked a mile towards the castle and this was the only little cafe I happened to come across that had fish and chips. And I worried that the pub on the corner was a tourist trap because there are practically zero pubs west of here that serve food. Still, their freezer case that the food comes from is RIGHT THERE in the FRONT. Walk on past this joint to the royal mile unless you want a coffee, because that's what anyone else seemed to order.

Good coffee. A bit overpriced. But good enough location to enjoy. Great options for breakfast or lunch. Nice seating indoors as well as outdoors. Good work by the owners.

Definitely not value for money. The £7.50 for 2 plain pancakes on a plate were like shop bought and put in a toastie/ panini press to warm them up. Had to send one plate back because they were hard and burnt on the edges too. The coffee isn’t great (tasted burnt) and the cooked breakfast was only just on the side of cooked. £48 for 2 adults and 2 kids: 2 small cooked breakfasts and 2 coffees, 2 pancakes and 2 orange juices. Wouldn’t waste my money going back there. There are plenty of other wee cafés that do way better food for the same price or less. Avoid this place and walk further up the street.

The food was okay, filled the gap but nothing to brag about. The service was friendly, coffee a bit weak. Felt it was all a bit overpriced for what you get.

10 quid for a burger that I could source from Aldi for 1 quid. Chips were decent to be fair, but the burger was a shocker. Won’t bother going back.

I think you get what you expect from this wee cafe. It was OK, not much else to say.

We knew that the place didn't serve good coffee (this is certainly mediocre at Jacques Café), but we stopped there anyway as it was practical. The reason why I'm writing this review is because a particular member of staff didn't observe Covid regulations (the person in question wasn't wearing a mask neither inside nor outside when getting very close to the customers; the person in question was even queried about this, but didn't give a f*). It was a very uncomfortable experience. If you would like good coffee as well as safety you could go to the likes of Milkman or Artisan Roast, say.

Lovely late lunch at Cafe Jacques, very glad to see it was able to stay open even with the covid restrictions. Lovely staff and hearty food... and of course had to take a bit of cheesecake for dessert. Yum

Nice enough breakfast but cheap tasting sausage, plates should be warmed first and cheap quality brown sauce/ketchup which you wouldn’t expect for a nearly £9 breakfast. Hash brown was lovely!!

We had a full Scottish breakfast and coffee and it was reasonably priced and very tasty. We sat inside but there's outdoor seating as well. Staff are very nice.

Vinimos un martes esperando que comer fuera para ayudar. Pero desafortunadamente no nos dimos cuenta de esto hasta la mitad de nuestra comida. En primer lugar, la comida era de buen precio y barata. Mi novia pidió una tortilla y yo pedí un desayuno escocés, la tortilla salió primero y mi novia la describió como insípida y sosa. Diez minutos después, después de que mi novia terminó su tortilla, salió mi desayuno. El desayuno escocés era bueno, sin embargo, toda la carne parecía barata y de la sección de precios inteligentes en Asda. No valía los 20 que pagamos. Aparte de eso, el servicio estuvo bien con las dos mujeres siendo amigables, sin embargo, el hombre estaba de mal humor.

Nice little quite spot with nice big window to sit at to have a little bite to eat. Really cheap compared to the rest of the street but just as good! We had a toasty and a bacon sandwich which are really basic items but they were lovely and we defiantly got a few extra portions because the sizes were generous. Very clean and set out accordingly to social distancing. Would go again, thank you!

Visited Jaques for some lunch,Ordered 1 fish and chips & 2 bagels.We were presented with over cooked freezer food, a fish the size of a Birdseye fish finger & a bagel that required a chainsaw to cut through it.Any decent reviews on here have been provided by family members or staff at most.When I asked for 3 waters our 2 options were tap or still. Obviously we went for bottled water, this was handed to us hotter than the coffee looked.For £33 you can hit the road Jacque.The only decent thing I can add is that the guy serving us was friendly.I added a £1 tip to add to the fridge bill because the shreds of Lidl iceberg lettuce were colder than the water, Good luck Jacque

Unfortunately not good at all. We had pancakes, and I had bacon with mine, which he opened a chest freezer next to our table and got a pack of frozen pancakes out of. And they were big ones though picture on menu looks like American pancakes. The pancakes were dry and tough with no/not nice flavour. And the bacon was very salty. Both myself and my sister hardly ate much of it. And for 2 frozen pancakes, bacon and a latte was just under £11. Very expensive for not good food. We also noticed the scones were in big frozen bags also. Will not unfortunately go back, and unfortunately cannot recommend. .

We were here around Christmas time and got the Scottish fry and it was absolutely lovely! Such a humble cafe with really nice cakes and friendly staff
