Cafe Italia in Calderdale

As a family we love this place, been several times and everything is spot on every time, can’t understand the negative reviews, eaten at hundreds of place around Halifax over the years and this is tops, loverly atmosphere, service and food plus great birthday sing a long is the personal touch, for Italian food it’s 5⭐️.

Very friendly and welcoming. The food is authentic and tasty. Good size portions. Lots of choice of drinks. They do specials as well as their normal menu. I would highly recommend. Parking nearby.

Not a great experience today at cafe italia. Starters are overly priced. Going on £10 for one starter so we avoided those. All my family ordered pizza, my gluten free was £2.50 extra even though I witnessed the chef going to the store next door to buy a FROZEN base. He then carried it through the restaurant infront of my eyes. To add, my grandma’s pizza was burnt to a crisp so she hardly touched it. I complained about this and the nice waiter did knock this off our bill. We also enquired about the chips, the waiter admitted they were processed and not home made. It is meant to be an Italian style restaurant but nothing is made from scratch. FROZEN pizza base and pasta from a packet. Plus FROZEN chips. We won’t be returning. FROZEN produce at crazy prices. No thanks.

First time here and can't believe I've been unaware of such a gem. Only small but a perfectly formed Italian bistro. Superb food, very affordable prices and great atmosphere. Guiseppe the manager is a star with a great sense of humour. I had the best lasagna I've had in years, and the seafood linguine was tops. Will defo be back. Suspect booking will be required on weekends etc.

Edit 2024: called in again whilst on holiday and I had an excellent, authentic carbonara. Delicious. Mrs C had the spinach and ricotta ravioli. My first visit here since arriving in holiday. On a busy Thursday evening they managed to squeeze a table of three in. I had the pasta al Forno which was delicious. A couple of glasses of very good sangiovese went down well. As did the complimentary garlic pizza 🍕 which was delicious.

The food was lovely and atmosphere and service was spot on, but when you are spending £340 on a family meal you would normally expect the round of limoncello drinks would be on the house as they are in most Italian Restaurants

My partner and I visited this place, having looked on Google for nearby Italian restaurants and exiting the motorway for it. I’m an independent wheelchair user and am constantly astounded at the ignorance of the Equality Act by business owners, but I was astounded by the chef’s response to being asked why he didn’t have a (cheap, foldable, portable) ramp, as required under S.20 of the Equality Act 2010, “We don’t have many wheelchair users”. This is what is called a self-fulfilling prophecy. They discourage disabled people and want to make them feel unwelcome. Indeed, once in, we found the place extremely cramped and both waitresses cold and rude. The place was small with tables crammed together. I requested white wine, but the waitress tried to upsell me to a large and forgot my Coke. My partner wanted some water whilst he decided what to eat; they didn’t bother to even bring a jug with ice. Looking around, and find the atmosphere not especially welcoming, we saw that the plates were extremely small. I also lived in Rome for many years, speak fluent Italian, and cook Italian food well myself. The examples I saw on the plates of other customers were extremely small and underwhelming. The menu wasn’t inspiring. They shouldn’t judge people; I run a business and if we had found the atmosphere and food pleasant, we would have spent substantially. I would unfortunately consider the poor reviews here from other customers more indicative of the experience; we saved our money and bought a snack from Tesco and ate it in the car before getting back on the motorway. It was more enjoyable. The owners should also be aware of the danger of being sued for failing to comply with basic accessibility requirements under UK law. Frankly, I could but can't be bothered.

It's such a shame they cannot put on a better show. Even though the food looks to be cooked freshly all the fish and shellfish is sadly frozen and the sauces are the same in a lot of the dishes. The menu prices are not cheap so they need to raise their game. Certainly, Italians would not be satisfied with the quality on offer. Come on, give us the fresh food we all live to eat in Italy!!

The chefs are Sardinian and Sicilian, Antonio and Pietro. Truly authentic Italian cuisine my wife’s absolute favourite ( when available) Fegato alla Veneziana (veal liver excellent if you like liver us oldies do ) mine linguine with crab meat . They even made me Seadas which are fried pastry filled with ricotta and drizzled with honey Traditional Sardinian dessert the restaurant is only small but excellent . Everything is made there, you can see them making it . Giuseppe head waiter, as do the others speaks good English so no problem there . Try it I’m sure you will love it . Ps going tomorrow

Definitely will be going back ,food was delicious and the service was really good .they fit us In at the last minute on mother's day which we was really glad of .First time here and I'm really glad we did go ,can't fault this place . Really clean as well

Amazing food and staff. We had the platter for two as our starter for the first time. Beautiful selection of meats, cheeses, salad, olives etc. The olives came in a home made bread basket. My son said it was the highest quality and nicest bread he'd ever tasted. Also the calzone for my main was amazing. Highly recommend

Probably 1 of the best Italian restaurants you wish to visit. Food is top draw. We can't go anywhere else for Italian food now we have been here. Its simply the best.

Been a few times , my father was Italian from Puglia so both my. Wife and I know good Italian cuisine . Antonio is the head Chef he is Sardinian ,and his cooking is delicious .I recon he could make a great meal out of fresh air!!. Giuseppe the waiter is so accommodating a traditional Sardinian sweet is called a Seada it wasn’t t on the menu but he made me one from scratch . By the way you have to kook it the prices are reasonable. And the hours are so accommodating we go mid afternoon. If you go later you will probably have to book in advance you won’t be disappointed I am sure if you go . By the way I had Lobster linguine er indoors lobster ravioli excellent .

It's been a while since I had a proper Italian meal. And this was it. Highly recommend it. Beautifully cooked, fresh and super tasty!! Looking forward to the Sardinian night. 👌😁

We had a starter, main and desert. All of the dishes were cooked fresh in the kitchen which is visible from the seating area. The food was amazing and the service was great. We went during the day when it was quiet. I will definitely be going again.

Highly recommended. Fantastic authentic little restaurant. Who doesn't love feeling like they're in the heart of Italy? The food is amazing. I love the prawn and tomato linguine with a side of mixed veg and rosemary focaccia. Never seen anybody unhappy with the food, or the portions size (they're very good portions) Ceasar salad is a very refreshing starter or ask for it as a main dish too! Very good range of drinks, at competitive prices. Very accommodating staff for my dairy intolerance and never had a problem. Even when we have ordered to take away the food was still as amazing! Sardinian Nights are a must for any food lover. Such value for money and amazing atmosphere too.

Ordered 2 coffee's extra hot no froth at counter,over appr. 10mins they came for order at table. Whilst sat there we watch 1 person of the 9 we counted making and serving 1 drink at a time. After approx.25 mkns.our coffee's had stood on counter going cold while staff talked. When it eventually arrived,1 cup at a time,it was half full of coffee and the rest was froth. I sorry but we got up and left whilst they were talking at counter when we sent 1st cupback. After explaining why we were leaving,we left and we shall not be recommending it to our friend.

OMG this place is amazing, such an atmosphere in a small space, staff amazing and we were made to feel really welcome, food is FABULOUS !!! Fresh and tasty and proper Italian, in fact the whole place smells amazing. We were recommended to eat here and we certainly were not disappointed ! Thank you

Very tasty food, staff lovely and friendly, service great, just a couple of down sides, starter mussels, not many for the price, usually we're ever we eat, we get a good dish full and can share as as a starter, plates for mains were cold but food was nice and tasty.

Very friendly service with nothing too much trouble. Small, homely business which I like. Excellent fresh made pizzas and lasagne. Shame they use frozen prawns though but I understand wine. Can't comment on the wine as I was driving, so soft drinks only. If you take young children 1 pizza between 2 would be a good idea to avoid waste. Will visit again.

It was OK. Portion size of main was disappointing and chips looked like oven chips and were cold. Booking a table for 2 required a £20 deposit which I found offensive. Heard very good things, however I won't be rushing back.

Incredible food as always in a beautifully authentic Italian setting. I ordered from the standard menu the meatballs and diavola pizza which were delicious as always. I challenge you to find a lighter and more aerated pizza base anywhere! However, my partner ordered the mussels from the specials menu and the sea food bisque was simply divine. The flavours were reminiscent of fine dining quality. All in all, an outstanding dining experience!

1st time visit and will certainly be going back

authentic Italian cuisine, very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. This was our second visit in as many weeks, we were very impressed with the dishes we chose, the staff were very friendly and attentive, and the price of our meals was very reasonable. The restaurant seating area is quite small but gives you a real cosy feeling, and the kitchen is in full view, which we liked, we will certainly be returning soon!

First time I have been to your place I ordered a vegetarian pizza with no onions on to take out because the restaurant was very busy and I waited roughly about 10-15 mins I met a retired football player who played for the top teams in this country and in Italy and the staff were very friendly and I enjoyed my pizza

We doubled off the motorway for this place, glad we did. Sandwiches were more whole ciabatta with filling, pizza was great and platter for one was a triumph. Great place, nice people, excellent food.

My second visit First visit was fine however on this visit we had to wait 1 hour for our meal appreciating that it was very busy however I ordered a straightforward spaghetti bolognaise and it was devoid of meat and very disappointing I doubt if I will be back

Amazing food as always. Ordered the lasagne, which never fails to deliver, and my partner had the chicken special which was cooked to perfection. All of this in a restaurant and atmosphere which is true to an authentic Italian dining experience. Front of house always very welcoming and a delight to interact with. Forever keep going back for more!

Had some cracking pizza during lockdown, it was so good, lovely soft base, fresh ingredients on top. The staff was great and really friendly. Ordered by phone and collected about 20 minutes later.

Called late last night with 5 of my family, staff where very accommodating and everyone agreed the food was lovely, will be back soon.

Fabulous food and drink always!

Booked a table at cafe italia for my granddaughter and her boyfriend. I was not made aware that tables had a very limited time. My granddaughter was upset when she rang me to pick her up only 1 hour after she had arrived at the restaurant. She told me that she had not had time to have a desert and that she had been asked to leave exactly one hour from her booking. The young couple had not had time to have a relaxing meal. They had been looking forward to enjoying a meal and chatting. 1 hour is not enough time to chose a meal order and eat. The worse part of the experience was that they were asked if they had finished whilst still eating - several times . They felt very rushed and their custom was unappreciated. If you are going to this restaurant make sure you chose what you having online because you will be rushed. The prices are not cheap . Too expensive to be eaten like fast food. Food was lovely but would not go back .

After ordering some amazing takeaways from Cafe Italia through lockdown, we were looking forward to visiting in person. Both the food and service was exceptional, absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend, we will definitely be visiting again!

Ordered last night. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of everything I ordered. So much so I’ve ordered again tonight! So impressed!

Last week our friend recommended this restaurant and we visited on Sunday. Tonight (our next takeaway night) we visited again. Spicy meat balls and a pizza to share. Fab on Sunday and if possible better tonight. Beautifully made, cooked and served. My only problem is we never visited the restaurant before lockdown, it will be one of our very first stops when we are free.

Had the take away meal on new years eve and it was excellent. Want the lock down to be over to go into the restaurant

Rang at approx 7.30pm on NYE after being let down by local takeaway. Was advised that my request for 3 pizzas would not be ready until 8:45-9.00pm. I offered to collect and was told they would be ready for 9:00pm. I arrived at Cafe Italia just before 9 to a chaotic scene. The Chef was shouting loudly in the kitchen with other staff attempting to pacify him. They knew nothing about my order but told me that I could still have the pizzas. I received my pizzas a short time later and staff apologised for the mix up. I drove a short distance home and the pizzas were secure in my car. When I opened the pizza boxes, 2 of the pizzas were barely cooked and all the topping had fallen off the pizza base. There was only 1 pizza that looked presentable with the topping still intact on top of the pizza where it should be. Absolutely appalling service. Disgraceful to think it is appropriate to serve food in this way

We had a lovely meal and great service, the staff were friendly. The only downside was they didn't make us aware of the offers like the early bird menu. Can't wait to return.

I cannot rate highly enough this little gem of restaurant, went with a friend this week the food and service was second to none. Calamari so fresh and the vodka prawn pasta dish was the best pasta dish I have ever tasted.

We went for an evening meal after work, 4 friends. I booked by telephone and we were greeted at the door and lead to a table. Service was spot on, but unfortunately the staff were all oriental which kind of spoilt the Italian vibe. The food arrived swiftly and was, average. The pizzas were ok, slightly underwhelming, and the choice was very limited. I went for chicken and mushroom tagliatelle, which was ok, nothing special. As I have said, it was all average and I doubt we will return.

Great little place for a feast of fabulous Italian food. All dishes were excellent and top quality. The calzone is a true delight and a must when you visit.

33rd wedding anniversary tonight at Cafe italia. Brilliantly looked after and magnificent food. Can't wait to return.

I ordered some food and received it with all bite missing. Will definitely not be returning. I thought nothing of it and contributed to thank him for my food. My daughter then continues to show me a ‘Snapchat’ of one of the main workers there and he states he actually Ate some of my dish. Disgusting

We were recommended to try their delivery service during lockdown. We placed our order yesterday for delivery last night. They were very helpful. We ordered Calamri Fritti, Caprese Salad, Two Calzones, Panna Cotta and Tiramisu.Our order was delivered on time. There was little notes on each item stating "take care" which was much appreciated.The food was excellent and we will most certainly use their service again.

From arriving we were hounded about the time we had to leave. Not really a great start. Every restaurant needs to turn customers around to utilise a table & make money. Made us feel rushed, constantly checking time. Not what you want for a casual meet up with a friend, or any meal out to be fair. Starter sharing board for two was fantastic, beautifully presented & delicious. My friend had ravioli for her main, it was nice, but starter sized portion with a mains price. I ordered a pizza, the artichoke was missing. I asked they said “oh yea I forget to tell you”. More like you wanted to see if you could get away with it. She said she would known something off the bill. Conveniently she forgot to do that too. The pizza was very nice though, & the tiramisu that’s we shared was good. Would I go again, if someone else really wanted to. But there are lots of other restaurants I would rather go to in west vale & else where.

What an amazing place. We had my Mum's 70th Birthday Party here last year and the food/venue was perfect. I can't recommend this place enough :)
