What has happened to this cafe ? It’s a few months since we were there when we enjoyed a lovely lunch and not for the first time. We arrived today to find the cafe now only open at weekends and the only food served was on the blackboard….Choice of soup, some Quiche a sausage roll or a spiced chicken and bacon pasty. 3 of our group chose the pasty….. it was truly awful, mostly very thick dry pastry with very little inside, the filling was completely dry and definitely no spice. A polite complaint was made to one of the staff who just simply said sorry. I’m afraid that this cafe in wonderful Salts Mill is now most definitely not to be visited again….such a shame.

Having had coffee in the downstairs cafe at Salts Mill we hadn’t fancied any of their offerings for lunch today so tried out the Cafe in the Opera on the top floor. Beautiful spot with tasteful furniture, good views, attentive staff and a good selection of lunch choices. Food and drink arrived promptly and was really good. We shall be back!

Waited as requested for a while to have someone come over to show us to a table . Then when we requested one by the window we're told it hadn't been wiped down. Never mind, after that start things improved! Decent cup of coffee - though not particularly large - and a tasty cheese on toast. Delicious with tangy apple chutney and side, salad. Impressive that when we'd said we would be sharing the C on T it arrived halved and on2 separate plates. Nice touch.

Nice, spacious surroundings. Much quieter than Salts Diner, which is SO noisy! Round tables, set well apart, with great views over Saltaire. Classic, appetising lunches with good puddings. Short menu with daily/weekly specials. Reasonable prices. Perfect for a catch-up, as it's possible to have a private conversation. The Mill is full of interesting,after- lunch, browsing. Brilliant books, art materials, stationery, houseware and more. Lots of art to see, particularly Hockney. Great place.

Staff were quite slow and inattentive. There was a fair wait to be seated - it was busy(ish), but there were clearly empty tables. After ordering the wait was way too long. We saw people who arrived after us get theirs brought out as we waited and waited. When it did arrive it was so disappointing. We had both ordered spinach filo parcels - it sounded lovely on the menu. It was meant to be a light bite, but even by those standards the portion was meagre. There were several greasy little parcels that looked like cheap supermarket frozen party food, a tiny clump of leaves with too much dressing (greasy again), a few tiny pieces of apple and a teaspoon sized blob of something creamy and unpleasant. This disappointing offering was £7.50 and absolutely not worth it. Salts mill is such a wonderful place, so it's a real shame the cafe doesn't match.

My husband had the fish soup which was sublime and much spicier than he expected, but not too spicy! I have the feta filo triangles, more triangles than I expected, could perhaps have withstood a little more feta, but beautifully freshly made.Service was painfully slow, there were 4 staff and only about 10 covers, so the reason for the slow service is unclear...We finished with scones and clotted cream, mmmm so thick! The Bolton Abbey is as good beef as one could possible wish for, superbly cooked and served. The chicken liver parfait, prepared in house was smooth and full of flavour. Profiteroles are just perfect as was the home made Bakewell tart. All washed down with Saltaire Blonde beer made for a perfect lunchtime. Hubbie and I popped along to Salts Mill for the new Hockney exhibition. We have eaten here before and definitely prefer the calm of the top floor to the family hubbub of Salts Diner. I plumbed for the fish pie, with buttered kale, and have to say if I only got to choose one meal for the rest of my life, it would be that. Packed full of fresh fish, just the right amount of sauce and a topping of fluffy, cheesy mash - the pie was accompanied by an often neglected green veg (no soggy broccoli here!) I actually felt moved to pop over to the pass to thank the chefs. Bravo guys, a triumph on a plate!

I have been to this cafe many times as the food is always well presented and delicious, however, today we were left waiting on arrival for 10 minutes before being shown to our table. We waited 15 minutes and needed to approach a waitress who had served later arrivals first. We then waited 15 minutes to be told the dish I had chosen had run out. I ordered soup then and waited another 10 mins or it to arrive. When it did it was so salty it was inedible and I sent it back(it took me another 10 mins to attract waitress attention to do this). I then ordered a desert as other people in my party had finished their first. This was ok. We asked for the bill and waited 15 mins then left without paying to go to the toilet. We returned 10 mins later and paid. We could have gone home instead. all in all a very disappointing visit and it took us 2 hours to have a simple lunch. It has put me off from going again, what a shame.

After a happy few hours exploring the delights of Salt's Mill, we headed to the Café Opera for a spot of lunch. We seated ourselves as instructed by the sign at the door and then sat there for 15 minutes while the staff steadfastly refused to acknowledge our presence. Eventually my wife went up to one of the waitresses and insisted she came over and take our order. We then sat back and waited for our food to arrive as chaos unfolded all around. Waitresses were rushing hither and tither trying to clear plates that had stacked up on tables while customers sat there being ignored (they weren't all as pushy as my wife). Some people gave up and left while others crowded the counter asking for either some service, some food or their bill. Others of a more saintly nature just sat there tolerating it all. The only thing stopping me giving this place one star is that the two bowls of fish chowder we ordered were actually pretty good. But the service really was shocking. On departing my wife asked to speak to who was in charge so she could give them some feedback. The reply was 'no-one' which perhaps explains a lot. Enjoy the art and the shops but do yourself a favour and eat elsewhere.
