We had a delicious brunch time snack at the cafe du jardin. The entrance way is unassuming but don't let that fool you, this rustic restaurant serves delicious bites and thirst quenching drinks in a relaxed and informal French cafe style both outdoor and indoor tables and believe me this place gets busy. Our server, Albie was an absolute gem, he worked hard to ensure no one was waiting, very attentive and capable. As you can see from my photos the food is excellent. However I wished I had ordered one of the tasting plates as they look fantastic.

Visit for a quick lunch ruined a lovely & expensive morning in Lewes. Service polite but hopelessly slow. Food served impossibly hot with very hard "bread" accompanying a spicy soup, a "quiche" being a square of puff pastry over-dosed with too much cheese and a side of chips served in a bowl that was difficult to eat from. I'm sure it would be lovely given a couple of hours but best avoided if you only have 45 minutes.

Cute café with an outdoor courtyard next to an Antiques shop. Went there for coffee and cake but the lunch menu items looked yummy. After a delightful walk around Lewes incorporating the old Priory, Anne of Cleaves owned property and the Castle, we walked down the high street and over the river and found this little gem, full of character and reasonably priced. It had been a very hot morning, so a shaded seat in the courtyard was most welcome. A large pot of tea was ordered together with a pain au chocolate and a piece of orange cake. Delightful. A good pot of tea, a generous slice of home made cake, a lovely pain au chocolate, all pleasantly and efficiently served. Lovely. Thank you to all concerned.

Could have been a lovely morning tea stop, but service wasn’t great. Only one water seemed to be working and when I popped inside to get our bill and pay, I was gruffly told to wait at the table and someone would come ….. We had already been waiting 15mins for a bill. We stopped off for a light lunch while shopping. We sat downstairs (chilly room) and were attended to immediately but sadly the food took at least 30 mins and more like 40 to arrive. Mine came first and my husband's after about 5 minutes. There were only 2 other tables occupied downstairs and outside was by no means full. The food was good, but the long wait was not. We didn't have time for dessert or coffee because our car park ticket would have expired. When I politely mentioned this it on paying the lady apologised profusely and said "We just haven't got it together today"

Nice place something of a hidden secret tucked away in courtyard by reclaim building and furniture emporium style place. Can get busy and in cold weather worth wrapping up to keep warm. There are some inside seats down in basement area. Slight negative is they don't like you going to look at the counter and haven't always been friendly Insisting you sit down first and wait to be served. Which not great if you want to see what sort of cakes and pastries they have. However still like the place. Also great to explore the emporium style buildings and furniture shops.

It took ages to arrive and we were aware of an older woman running around looking continually stressed! I own a café myself and was quite shocked at how untidy the surroundings were and how unkept! We have been on a long lockdown and all had plenty of time to spruce up out outdoor areas so no excuse. The food was good but the wait very very long! Astonishing the lack of manners from one particular waiter. Just very rude and not welcoming at all, for no reasons. We tried to get a table for a group of 5, and when we sat down we got told we couldn't sit as the table was just for 4 ppl apparently....he just left us there, standing without saying anything else or trying to find a solution or just saying to wait for a bigger table..nothing. also, when we tried to look around for a bigger table he looked quite bothered, and definitely not willing to help. We then decided to leave. That's a shame for whoever owns that place, as your gonna end up with this kind of reviews just because one member of your staff couldn't be bothered to do his job, and actually just behave like a normal person with basic social skills. What an asshxle.

We visited the Café du Jardin with some friends quite by chance whilst on a visit to Lewes. We had been walking around the town and found ourselves in the area around lunchtime. We followed our friends into the entrance, initially I thought it was an antiques shop but the short passage off the street opens out into a large courtyard. The café has a very continental feel about it, and the scattered antiques and bric-a-brac also gave it a feeling of a past age it certainly had a good ambience about it. We were seated outside but a large canvas suspended above kept us dry from the sporadic rain. There were a good number of tables and many diners already seated but there was a good spacing between them. The café has a good menu and there were also some interesting meals on the specials board. I had the baked camembert whilst my wife had the leek & potato soup. The Camembert came in its circular cardboard container and was served with a chutney and bread, the whole dish being served on a wooden paddle shaped plate. The dish was quite enjoyable and I would certainly order it again on a repeat visit. The serving staff were friendly enough though when asking to change a tea cup with a tea stain in the bottom our waitress replied curtly “that is not dirty is it?” before fetching a replacement cup.Customer toilets were available at the rear of the courtyard in a brick out building and these seemed clean enough.Prices for what we received were comparable to equivalent restaurants we have used, it’s not expensive but nor is it a budget café. Payment for the meal was via a contactless transaction and was made at the table. A bit of a hidden gem which we stumbled across, but I would certainly recommend seeking this place out if you are visiting Lewes and looking for somewhere to eat.
