The coffee and service is absolutely first class at the Ortus. They use a local coffee roastery and have highly skilled barista’s who have wonderful customer service. The venue itself is light and airy and has good Wi-fi. I’ll go back regularly and would encourage you too!

The cafe is a little haven in the grounds of the Maudsley Hospital so read peaceful, relaxed and a sense of community. They have a great range of food whether for lunch, something to have with your coffee, or the kind of healthy nibbles you don’t always find. If there’s sun sit outside or grab one of the tables or the staging inside. Great service.

Part of the Maudsley Hospital training centre for NHS staff. Lovely building, which is light and airy. Lasagne was average and rather dry. Good coffee and cake. Peaceful setting with lovely trees round it.

This place is on of the best coffees you can try. We frequently come for starting the day, and have a coffee. John and the staff from this coffee, make the starting day just great. The coffee is very nice, beans are fresh and tasty. I do recommend to join this cafe and try out all the options they offer for coffee, lunch and snack time.

Nice little cafe inside a modern building serving lunch, coffee and cakes at OK prices. Specially good in summer time because you can sit outside and enjoy the sun in this little Oasis in the heart of Denmark Hill. Also good for working, studying or reading.

For us, a convenient neighbourhood cafe, about 200 yards from home. We have eaten here a number of times. Food: very fresh, healthy salads, with "health oriented" drinks available. Display is a little odd - I always get thrown by what is available at what price - but that said, the price when totted up always seems pretty sensible. Ambience: pleasant light airy. Full of intelligent young medical people. Not intimate - more utilitarian. Location: handy if you are near Denmark Hill station and don't fancy the Phoenix or the George Canning with their more pub ambience. Recommendation: yes - we will be back.

Popped into this pleasant-looking café for a coffee and something to eat at lunchtime a couple of days ago. The coffee was good, and the staff were friendly, however, the sandwiches were all neatly piled up on the top of the counter thus enabling everyone in the (long and slow moving) queue to breathe on them, or worse. Personally, I find this very off-putting and unhygienic. Returned later that afternoon for a coffee, and couldn’t get out of there fast enough. There seemed to be a few mothers congregated in the outside area, with their children (I think there is a junior school nearby). These mothers appeared to be completely oblivious to the fact that their children were running around and screaming – honestly it was deafening. I am at a loss to understand why the staff allow/tolerate this unbelievably unsociable behaviour, which makes Ortus thoroughly unpleasant for other customers. This café is actually surrounded by people trying to work too – I would be seeking employment and coffee elsewhere!!

Lots of room to sit, bright atmosphere and the food is delicious. I had a pastrami sandwich with sun blush tomatoes, rocket on sultana and fennel crusty bread, it was amazing. Coffee could be better but still hot and tasty. Very friendly staff. And prices are excellent.

My daughter visits every week with either myself or my mother. The cakes are divine and my daughter loves the soup. Nothing is too much trouble for the busy staff, and the seating area (particularly in Summer months when they add blankets on the grass as well as outdoor tables) is spacious and comfortable. There is always some interesting conference or event going on as well. We love it.

The place does really good coffee and amazing chocolate cake. And although I haven't had lunch there, the portions of salad my friend had was massive and proper chunky salad items, not just the usual fare. I love that this place isn't busy, as it means that it is quite chilled out, and in the Summer months, hey give you mats to sit outside on the grass on. Love it- and the staff are really chirpy.

I really like this cafe. For weeks I used to go there every day on the way to the hospital and later on I went there often when I was on maternity leave. The staff are always cheerful, the ladies who work for the learning centre, as well as the cafe staff (especially the tall guy, who speaks French). It's very child friendly, often they helped me to get a high chair out or cooed over my daughter. There's a little play area, books, baby changing and lots of high chairs. In summer they lay out picnic blankets for the visitors to use, what a fab idea. Because it's a bit out of the way i've always found it quite tranquil and to have a nice vibe. Coffee is very good as is the food. Definitely recommend.

Terrible experience! I work nearby and used to go with coworkers. Their Sunday Roast is excellent so I made a reservation to go with friends on Sunday 22nd September. They offered me two slots at 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. I chose 15.30 and it was confirmed by Sonata. When the day arrived I called early in the morning to let them know if we could postpone it to 4:30 pm because my friend was late, they told me it was no problem. Our surprise was that when we arrived at the place they told us that they did not have our reservation, despite having a written confirmation, and that the kitchen was closed (even though you could see the plates of food coming out of the kitchen to the tables) and that this Sunday was its last day open. If they close the kitchen at 4.30pm, how can they offer us to eat at 5pm? A whole bunch of lies...they left us stranded and didn't bother to offer an apology. The bar staff was the most unhelpful. We had to leave the places without eating and the whole experience was a great disappointment. I will never set foot in this place again... And I absolutely do not recommend it to anyone. They don't value clients!

One of the best places to try and learn about exclusive English wines, couple this with Julia's passion and knowledge of the products you can't get any better. Add the passion of the recent explosion of gin into the UK revival what's not to think you should not arrange a visit?
