Had a beautiful birthday breakfast here at Butternut Squash. The delicious French toast and omelette was amazing. Then I was surprised with a strawberry filled shortbread cookie for my birthday! Such sweet women! Thank you 🫶🏼

Decent no frills cafe 5 minutes walk from the beach. How we have missed this gem for so long I don’t know. Excellent value breakfast with friendly service. Worth the walk up from the beach front. Nice selection of cakes also.

Went with family and friends here on Fathers Day. Very welcoming, varied menu with all dishes very affordable. The food and drinks were very tasty and would recommend.

Lots of places on the beach to eat but very happy we went with recommendations for this place. Good no fuss menu with decent prices. Friendly happy staff. No fuss down to earth place just as I like.

Lovely little cafe on a quiet side street in Portobello. Clearly a busy local favourite serving breakfast and lunch. Surprise on the menu: full vegetarian Scottish breakfast. I had the eggs benedict, which was very good. My husband had a bacon bun: delicious. My niece had the full veggie Scottish brekky: very good. Service was pleasant and efficient.

After living in Portobello for a number of months, I'd say this is my favourite restaurant here for brunch or lunch. No airs and graces, so if that's what you want look elsewhere. It's usually packed full - locals know how good the food is and what good value. It is simple stuff, but so fresh and tasty and helpings always generous. The bacon rolls are fabulous, and so are the sandwiches. And the ladies who work here are just lovely.

The cafe was absolutely rammed (always a good sign I think) but we were able to get a table outside in the unexpectedly warm February sunshine, and didn’t have long to wait for our bacon and egg rolls and pot of tea. Excellent quality, good value and friendly service, not surprised it’s popular!

We got outside catering for my sister’s 30th birthday and it was amazing! The amount of food was incredible but the quality was even better. It was very reasonable priced and the service was excellent. Thank you so much for helping us have an amazing day

We often visit Portobello and have tried a few cafes in the area. This one was on our list to try so we did. My partner and I were seated at a table that needed cleared as we wanted a window seat. The staff member cleaned it but was a little slapdash about it and wiped some of the debris onto my knees. The service was a bit slow but overall the food was ok. Slightly pricey for what it was but ok. Very handy for both the high street and the beach.

Lovely food and friendly staff. We had a couple of meals here and enjoyed it. They’re dog friendly which was helpful and the place had a lively atmosphere obviously popular with the locals. Food was very good ( especially the breakfast) and would recommend

Lovely lunch with my Dad just at the end of a Friday lunchtime rush. Tracy gave us some really friendly and attentive service and the Kinder Bueno cheesecake was the fluffiest most delicious cheesecake I’ve ever had! Thank you!

So glad we booked a table at this very popular bistro, to enjoy a wonderful lunch with fantastic, friendly service after our leisurely hour long walk along the Porty Prom on such a glorious sunny Saturday! Food was excellent and portions very generous. 4 of us had the Caesar salads - wow, the best we have ever had! - and huge! Other two friends were equally delighted with their dishes - Mac & Cheese and Chicken Wraps. We will definitely be back and will thoroughly recommend! Second time we have been to this great cafe. Stopped in for some lunch on our way home from St. Andrews. Staff here are so down to Earth and friendly. Food is quick to arrive at the table. I had the full breakfast honestly could not finish all that was on the plate it was huge and tasty. My husband had the cheeseburger which he demolished so must have been good. What makes this place is the friendliness of the people that work there. Really close to the portobello beach also. We recommend!

A wee visit to this magic place. So enjoyed my meal, mac& cheese with garlic bread & salad. Amazing hot & well presented. The banter with staff enjoyable. Would recommend this wee gem if your in Portobello. The service was great toi. So worth a visit.

We had a lovely evening at Butternut Squash. Friendly service and excellent food, served on hot plates (which delighted me as I detest cold plates). Consistently good tasty food. Two course lunch for £7.50, very busy at 2pm got last table. Delicious mushroom & veg soup followed by quesadillas with wedges & salad, BYOB £1 per person corkage. Nice friendly staff. Lucky to have this in Portobello

We had an excellent breakfast here on Thursday (food, service and price for the food was 5 stars). However on receiving the bill I noticed that I was charged 75 pence for a glass of hot water!! When queried the waiter said this was due to the cost of cleaning the glass and heating the water. By the way the same glass of water if cold would be free.There was no indication when asking for the water that such a charge would be levied and such a charge was not listed on any menu hence the lack of transparencyToday I raised this issue of the charge with the new owner and whilst I acknowledged that a nominal cost might be involved (keeping the urn hot) I felt that 75 pence was extortionate.She advised me that as a new owner she was in the process of reviewing all the prices.Hardly a satisfactory outcome.

Anyone who knows this Portobello institution will know it’s lovely food and service. Fear not, the new owner is lovely and the food is maintaining the high standards. The restaurant has needed a refurb for many years and this is now on the cards. Lovely place.

My wife and I visited this restaurant for dinner receiving a great welcome on arrival. The service and the food were fantastic. Starters and mains of excellent quality and quantity were served. It is fairly priced and also has the bonus of being a Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB). The new owner is a great host and added to the dining experience. We will be back

Nos detuvimos un sábado a última hora de la mañana para un desayuno tardío. El café estaba bien ubicado (entre la calle principal y la playa), acogedor, espacioso y cómodo, y nos dieron una hermosa mesa junto a la ventana. El menú era extenso, y el desayuno de 11 artículos enumerados (además de té y tostadas) tenía una excelente relación calidad-precio (a los 6. 95, solo en efectivo). Sin embargo, el servicio desde ese punto fue muy lento: tuvimos que esperar 10 minutos para que alguien tomara nuestro pedido, y otros 30 minutos dolorosos para nuestra comida (sin disculpas ni notificación de la larga demora). En el lado positivo, nos dieron una recarga gratuita de nuestras tazas de café con escurrimiento largo justo antes de que llegara la comida. Cuando lo hizo, conté 10 artículos (supongo que un segundo pastel de papa contó como el décimo), con los hongos que faltaban tanto en mi desayuno, como (más importante) en el desayuno vegetariano de mi pareja. Y la tostada estaba fría como la piedra. Sorprendentemente, el chico sentado a nuestro lado recibió su comida completa con hongos, y con una espera mucho más corta. Sin embargo, la comida era buena, especialmente los haggis y los huevos fritos. Si se puede mejorar el servicio, sin duda volveremos ya que la comida era muy buena relación calidad-precio, sabrosa y el ambiente muy cómodo y relajado.

Elegí un ajetreado almuerzo el sábado para mi primera visita a este café de Portobello, así que tuve que esperar un asiento, un menú, la comida y los cubiertos. Una vez que la comida llegó, fue muy agradable y a un precio razonable, servido por un personal amable pero trabajadora camarera. Si vuelvo, evitaré los horarios de almuerzo del sábado soleado y elegiré un momento más tranquilo.

No soy fan de la comida inglesa, pero me llevo mi hija y su novio, a ellos les gusta mucha, lo mejor el servicio, la amabilidad, y lo que bien que se lo estaba pasando un grupo en la terraza. las quesadillas muy ricas.

En nuestra visita más reciente, tuvimos el excelente servicio habitual y la comida de Keith y la pandilla. Es un placer saber de antemano que hay algunos lugares locales en los que siempre se puede confiar:)

Our family have become fairly regular customers at Butternut Squash. You won't find a warmer and more genuine welcome anywhere and the food is amazing. Whether you have a scone or full meal, you will enjoy it to the max. What better dining experience than excellent food served in comfortable and friendly surroundings. It has to be one of the main attractions in Portobello nowadays.

Popped in for lunch to a friendly welcome. Had haggis fritters, Brie and Camembert as starters and grilled haddock with cheese and haddock stock pots as mains. Friendly service, near the beach, good food, what’s not to like.

My friend and I arrived there at 12-30 havingvalready booked our table and Icouln’t believes hiw busy the restaurant was. People were even eating outside. We had to wait about five minutes as the entire restaurant was occupied. We placed our order butvas usual we had to wait a while becausecas I said before they cook everything from scratch. They have a very amiable staff . Anyway my friend and I ordered the haggis fritters as a starter and it was delicious also it was beautifully presented. For our main ordered the smoked haddock hotpot which their version of Cullen Skink. which was also delicious cannot praise this restaurant enough and he price was amazing under £16.00 the total of the bill. We couldn’t believe it and the quality of the food was par excellence. We thoroughly recommend it o anyone who is n the vicinity or even tontravela distance to get there as they will not be disappointed .

Popped in for a late morning coffee when in Portobello and feeling peckish decided a round of toast was in order. The sourdough (I think) bread toasted was absolutely sublime! Better than some toast in some of Edinburgh's finest breakfast establishments.

We came as so many positive reviews. 2 adults and 3 kids. Don’t be put off by the outside as it’s lovely inside with very friendly staff and brilliant value for money breakfast. Loved the haggis and top quality food. Not everyone had the full breakfast but the bill was still only £30 and that included leaving a tip. Parking can be tricky but worth the walk once found a spot.

Just had breakfast at Butternut Squash. Great. Full breakfast and veggie full breakfast. Unlimited tea or coffee. And all for £6.95 each. Service was excellent. We will be back.

We're staying in Portobello in Edinburgh and went to Butternut Squash for breakfast! We had 11 items for 6.95 plus tea and toast! Lovely start to the day. Offered free refills of drinks too. Had a lovely chat to the people working there /owners! Do go and visit you wont be disappointed

Popped in here for lunch with a lady and gent who are disabled and are wheel chair users. They have seats outside which were perfect as it was such a lovely day. Young girl was so helpful. Helped us move chairs away so the wheelchairs could fit under the table. One of the party suffers from dysplasia and we asked the man who was serving if he could blend some food for us. He answered a stern 'No. We cant blend food when we are busy.' This service is absolutely discusting in todays society. Have never came across this before in an eating establishment. You should hold your head in shame youngman this was a 2 minute task.

We visited here for Mother’s Day brunch and it was delicious! With two adults and four kids the staff were so helpful and patient and we received our food so quickly and it was piping hot! Absolutely recommend the small breakfast and chocolate croissants!

Grandes opciones y puedes tener tanto o tan poco como quieras. El servicio es bueno y el personal muy agradable. Los precios son muy justos. Realmente vale la pena intentarlo y sin duda volveremos la próxima vez en Portobello.

Fuimos a almorzar en el día de la madre. Excelente comida, servicio amable. Es bastante pequeño, así que recomiendo reservar. Aunque estaba muy ocupado, Keith se tomó el tiempo para molestar a mi nieta, para su deleite. Tuve un delicioso plato de abadejo ahumado en puré de papas en salsa de queso, ¡delicioso!

Great bacon roll and refil of coffee served by very friendly folks. Good choice from the menu and there were clearly a lot of regulars there.

The restaurant is on the small side but the proprietors make you feel very comfortable. A good menu backed up with an excellent meal made this a very enjoyable visit.

Following a recommendation we were pleasantly surprised by both the quality of service and food at Butternut Squash. Not only are the staff friendly and welcoming, but the food is of great quality! Reasonably priced and very generous portions (only one of us managed dessert!) No card payments, so bring cash. BYOB - great evening meal.

I decided to have brunch at Butternut Squash and was not disappointed at all! They are lovely people. The place is very nice and the food was delicious.

Delicious food and absolutely wonderful service. I was 20p short on my order and the server paid no mind, as a traveller this generosity goes a long way! There are also plenty of vegetarian options on the menu.

It was an amazing experience, we were made to feel very special. Keith and Kay, the wonderful chefs in the kitchen and Barney the dog were very welcoming to us and all our guests. We asked for our own choices of starters mains and desserts. Kay helped us work out what to have on the menu, Prosecco to start, three courses plus cheese boards. The food was world class, beautifully cooked and presented with style and delivered with warm humour and calm efficiency. The steaks were cooked perfectly and everyone was speaking about the great food. Guests from London were gobsmacked at the quality of the cooking and several people were mentioning a return visit! There were many very clean plates for each course, I was nearly defeated by size of the delicious Raspberry Pavlova but managed to make it disappear somehow! Thank you so much you wonderful pair !!

As soon as went in the owner made us feel welcomed and the staff were very helpful and hospitable. It is a place where it is a good place to eat out but not feel worried about the price as you can take your own drinks for £1.00 which is great value. The food they offer is very good and tasty. Was here yesterday 29th October 2018 with 8 friends and the food was tremendous !! Freshly made, beautifully presented and tasted lovely !! A quirky little place which is very friendly and easily accessible ! The waiting time from ordering to getting the foods is quick and the friendly staff are on hand to help, whether it be getting you a glass of water to condiments nothing is too much trouble !! The prices are very reasonable and well worth it ! I would recommend this place 100% !! Will be back again and again !!!

Visited for the first time on Saturday. We were lucky to get a table, it was so busy and had a real buzz about it. We went for the full breakfast, link sausage, bacon, beans, black pudding, haggis, fried egg, potato scone, fried bread, mushrooms, fresh tomato and potato face (this let the breakfast down as everything else was great and tasty, especially the haggis). Toast and tea or coffee, with free refills, are also included for £6.95 per head. This was great, the coffee good and came with hot milk on the side without asking, which is a big plus for me. Looking around the food others were having good great too. . The service is efficient and friendly even although they were so busy. We will definitely be back.

Needed somewhere for breakfast where we could take the dog. Found this place and we were welcomed with open arms. Food and hospitality were first class. You need to visit here and enjoy the food.

The food was really great, and plenty of it. Service and friendliness also very good. I had the Daal starter with warm Pitta bread and a chicken main, all lovely. They do operate a BYOB and you are charged £1 corkage or you can buy from their own bar. Great food at a reasonable price, four starters and four mains and two drinks for £76.

Went for breakfast mid week and the food was great. Staff were great. And coffee was quite acceptable. Just what we needed after a night out.

We visited Edinburgh last week, and one day we ended up in Portobello with my husband. We were roaming on the streets when we bumped into this nice little restaurant. I only wanted to drink a coffee, but when I read the menu, I immediately opted for the 11-item breakfast plate with refill coffe or tee. And what a good decision it proved to be!:) The food was abundant, fresh, and delicious. I am a huge fan of the English and Scottish breakfast, and this was one of the bests that I've had in my life. And for a very reasonable price, I have to add.

Este café siempre está ocupado, el servicio es bueno y el personal es atento y atento. El menú es bueno y ofrece algo para todos. Hay asientos dentro y si el clima lo permite o su valiente también hay asientos fuera. Hoy tuve su sopa de Tattie & Leek. Pedí que lo sirvieran caliente y ciertamente lo fue. Muy agradable tener comida servida como está ordenada. Scott tenía el inglés completo y era una gran porción recién hecha. La comida es casera y las sopas que venden son excelentes. ¿Recomendaría y volvería, la respuesta es Sí y Sí? El último punto que lo sella para mí es que es un café amigable para perros.

Sábado fuera y tenía un encantador desayuno vegetariano todo el día con excelentes haggis vegetariano. Perfecto para los madrugadores en un descanso.

Fui su última noche con amigos por primera vez. Nos quedamos impresionados por la comida y el ambiente Excelente entrantes incluyendo sopa, un cóctel de gambas en tomar diferentes y una casa maravillosa hizo paté. Me encantó la carnes y abadejo ahumado que eran muy muy sabroso y caliente. Precioso y limpio y, a pesar de estar muy ocupado tuvimos nuestra comida que se sirve en el momento oportuno.

Surprised to read the bad reviews on this cafe although there is not many at all - can’t please some people! Normally go for lunch and its a young girl with dark hair who serves us and she couldn’t be any more friendly! Would highly recommend this place!
