Pleasant time spent in this very charming restaurant, friendly atmosphere, excellent cuisine, I highly recommend and I will return there as soon as I have the opportunity; Moreover, the neighborhood is very pleasant.

We went for lunch and it was great! Fresh food (we had fish&chips and a haggis and onion focaccia) and a very lovely staff. Would 100% recommend!

We were in this week for brunch. We were a big table of 16 but food delivered promptly and was beautiful. I had the porridge and it was amazing. Lovely staff. Well done

This was the afternoon tea that topped the charts for the worst ever and my friend and I have had a few to say the least. If she had not booked and paid for it I would have made a real searing complaint. Firstly place had rubbish and debris on the floor, toilets filthy which clearly weren’t stayed on top of. The service was painfully slow. We didn’t get our ordered drinks didn’t until half way through our sandwiches. No tea, no scones, dry sausage rolls, dry traybakes with two tiny dry cakes. My friend’s sandwiches were stale and I fished out in front of the server two long hairs out of the bruschetta. 🤮 The whole thing turned our stomachs. Wasn’t cheap either over £40 and over priced. I personally think they ‘forgot’ the tea/coffee but after looking into this afternoon tea we clearly saw there was photos of previous afternoon teas which had scones etc. We must have got what they had lying about cause it was missing all the good stuff. On the very small positive my ham sandwiches were nice, and it was dog friendly but if you can’t do it right don’t do it at all. You should have been aware this fell short, no scones, no tea, no coffee, no macaroons, cakes Failed service. A refund should have been more in order. My friend is quite shy but was really upset she had took me there to her local place for substandard food.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We recently needed last-minute catering for a group of 20, and Butternut went above and beyond! The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation. Every dish felt crafted with care, and the flavors were spot-on. The team was so accommodating and made the whole process stress-free. This a brilliant cafe with friendly, welcoming staff and delicious food, prepared with great great l professionalism and love by the chef. We have Ben coming for a while and enjoy every visit. All comers are welcome from people popping in for a coffee or those wanting a hearty breakfast or lunch. At Christmas they serve a superb Christmas menu for the season. My wife and I were therefore sad to hear that since the pandemic there has been an increase in rudeness and surliness on occasions by some punters, which, frankly, astonishes us. A sad comment on the times we live in.

Great spot for lunch. Delicious wraps, omelettes and homemade soup. The team are all lovely too!

Ordered 2 full breakfast after 12 noon. Excellent food, full of flavours, beautifully cooked and you get haggis with it. Very pleasant, happy staff. Would come again.

Ordered chicken, vegetarian and vegan wraps. Portions were more than generous and the quality of ingredients and freshness was excellent. Service was carried by energetic youngsters eager to do a good job without being overbearing at all. Highly recommended

I’ve been coming here regularly since I moved to Portobello last year and I love it. The food is always great and it’s very good value for money. Service is prompt and efficient even if they’re busy and the menu has plenty of choice and is freshly cooked to order. I look forward to a bit of banter with the team and I’ve seen first hand how kind they are to visitors and regulars alike. Kids? No problem. Elderly relatives? No problem. Dogs? No problem. My menu favourites are the bacon and egg or sausage and egg rolls, scampi and chips and omelette. Always piping hot and with speedy service - when it’s really busy they always apologise if it’s slower than usual. Not sure what a few recent reviewers found to complain about tbh. It’s a great little spot, super dog-friendly (I’ve taken various four legged friends in with me!) and is the sort of local business we should all be trying to support. Thanks to the team at Butternut Squash for always putting a smile on my face.

Been going here for years. Even recommended it to friends so many times. Last 2 times visiting absolutely disgusted with the service. First time put it down to off day by waitress but after experience this week I'm done. Feel like I'm putting them out of there way to serve me. Not sure what has changed behind the scenes but the atmosphere and quality of food has gone downhill. Shame.

Service is curt, and not particularly friendly especially the older waitress. Outside table had rubbish on it which was never cleared away by anyone whilst we were sitting there despite them coming to our table several times. Food was basic and not great, definitely overpriced. It's pretty easy to do basic food well, it's annoying when it comes up lacking.

A fabulous little place located in bath street in Portobello. The food is great and all the staff are so friendly. Outside catering is outstanding too - delivered on time and fresh tasty food.

Such fab food unfortunately let down by very rude and unkind service. Don’t come here if you have an allergy as even with a large group of paying guests they don’t allow you to eat your own food, or in fact stay in the cafe at all as they are concerned you may become allergic to the food being served to the rest of the table. A poor and discriminatory excuse for not being a paying guest and so aggressively argued by the manager. Made to feel very uncomfortable and upset.

I was really rooting for this place, wanted to like it. The food was fine, good price, but we had a salt shaker break on one of our meals. Service crew didn't offer any sort of apology or replacement. They were curt, even seemed a little annoyed with us, as if it was our fault. Disappointing.

Have used several times while visiting my family. The food is delicious. Highly recommend the quesadilla and the chips are always fantastic. Will be back.

What an amazing place! I’ve always walked past and it looks busy lovely. First visit was breakfast and it didn’t disappoint- full breakfast and a veg breakfast 10/10 for quality, variety tasted amazing Back for lunch for baked potato chilli and cheese and haggis Bon Bon’s Family run, amazing atmosphere and service Cannot wait to work our way through the menu Thank you for the best little place I’ve been in years 🩵

Went in this morning 22/3/24 ordered 2 link rolls to take away. Never realized that it they were heated up in the microwave. The sausage looked gray and cooked the previous day. Ended up in the bin. Waste of £6

I would give a 2.5 overall if possible but Google doesn't allow for it. All the 5 star reviews must be from people with very low standards and don't cook much themselves. Had lunch with my mum here last sunday and it was very sub-average. I had the scottish breakfast. One piece of bacon (really? one piece of bacon?), one egg (tasted like the oil it was cooked in with no seasoning), no square sausage, one link, very tough overcooked tattie scone, hashbrown that tasted like the fryer, beans, over fried mushrooms and over cooked haggis. Very Meh and not worth the £8-£9 it cost. My mum had a baked tattie and tuna mayo. The baked potato had clearly just been blitzed in the microwave, skin wasnt crispy and there was no butter, salt or pepper. If you're selling baked potatoes they need to be spot on; crispy skin, whipped potato with butter and seasoning through it. The tuna mayo was over mixed so had turned to mush. Really bad for £9. A potato costs about 30p, if i'm paying £9 for it i want it to be the best baked potato i've ever had. Tea tasted like cheap non-brand tea that coats your mouth with a lining. Definitely won't be back any time soon. If you can't do the simple stuff good I'd be very skeptical that anything else on the menu will be any better. There was a cool dog beside me though so i guess not all bad.

Highly recommend this place, we ordered two Scottish Breakfast , it was ready in 10 minutes and it was absolutely delicious! Friendly staff and good customer service!

1st time in the little cafe as up in Edinburgh for the weekend, work related, definitely call in again next time I'm up that way. Spot on

Had an amazing night at Butternut Squash last week at the Spiritual Evening ✨ Started off with probably the most delicious pesto pasta I've ever eaten (& I can be fussy about my pasta!), amazing & friendly service & finished off with a fabulous spiritual evening of readings & conversations. Butternut Squash is lovely café based in the side street in heart of the Portobello area of Edinburgh. The café offers a range of freshly cooked food, snacks and blackboard specials. The staff on duty today Saturday lunch were attentive and kind. Loved the dark French onion soup and the halloumi chips and peri peri mayonnaise. Good coffee too.

Food was lovely. Unfortunately we ordered cakes for afters but waited for ages had to go to counter to be told they had forgot although it had been written down. The place was busy so that's a good reason we were forgotten. Staff very apologetic. Would go back.

Biggest variety in a vegetarian breakfast I've had anywhere in the world, and good value. Friendly service although the Cafe was pretty busy, and great to be able to take the dog l was looking after in with me.

Took my 90 year old mum in a wheelchair to BNS last week. We had beautiful home made soup, bacon roll and a cold drink. The staff were very friendly and kind, even though they were super busy, they managed a cheery disposition. Dogs are allowed, so great opportunity to see some lovely four legged friends too.

Lovely cafe just off the high Street. Solid middle of the road price point for tasty well presented spread. Portions are a good size and your kids will not be left wanting either with a nice range of the expected child friendly favorites. I've been with my blind partner and my disabled Dad. We were accommodated both times with grace and efficiency. Enough space to maneuver a standard mobility scooter or wheelchair. Never felt we were considered a problem. Highly recommended. Worth walking the extra distance from the beach for lunch.

Very rude staff. I bought a takeaway coffee and went on to use the toilet in which a member of staff made snide comments 3 times making it a very uncomfortable experience. Cakes were also uncovered and looked very unsanitary. Would not recommend

Lovely, family friendly cafe. Incredible portion sizes (we definitely ordered too much food, but this is our fault, not theirs🤣). We got the fajitas and a haggis, caramelised onion and cheddar ciabatta. Both were fantastic, onion rings and halloumi fries were also delicious. Great value, welcoming staff, will be coming back!
