I don't usually write bad reviews but that was genuinely one of the worst experiences I've ever had dining out. We came in at half 2 and did not leave until 4.The service was slow and the wait for the food even slower, had to remind the waiter three times about receiving our bread and olives only for him to return with two slices of supermarket seeded bread cut into halves with one of the slices being a crust! There was only two tables in (one of them being us) and we sat and waited for our main courses which took an hour and ten minutes! The burger was dripping causing the bun to be soaked in fat which also soaked into the napkin on the plate making it inedible as it stuck to the burger, the aubergine had practically disintegrated leaving just the skin and was like eating slop, the gnocchi was dry and bland and overall our experience was incredibly disappointing. We have never dined here before but safe to say we won't be returning! Especially after the 93 pound bill!

Had the fixed menu luch here today - our first visit. Food hot, very tasty and sensible portions. Careful with the buffalo wings - very spicy. Finished off with a desert which though limited in choice, was excellent. Good atmosphere and outdoor seating if required, but beware of nearby smokers. Will go back when we're next in Hull. Thanks to all staff, serving and kitchen, waiting for a very enjoyable experience.

Booked in as a party of 10. We had pre-booked our food because coming. Pizza oven was broken which means we couldn’t get garlic breads started. Opted for the bread and oils and received sliced bread out of a packet and a tiny bit of oil (after a 40 minute wait) another hours wait for mains. Beef was extremely salty, Yorkshire pudding cold, potatoes were so garlicky could barely eat them (we love garlic). Kids meal burnt but this was taken off the bill. Overall it was extremely disappointing and no one on our table was happy. Always loved it here but this has put us off now

Visited butler whites on a number of times and we have always had amazing service and fab food Went for our anniversary this weekend and nothing was to much trouble for our waitress I always have the mussel’s which are always cooked perfectly and taste divine and my husband always opt for the fillet steak , which is cooked just the way he likes it , we were asked throughout our visit if we were enjoying our meal and if we needed anything , we wasn’t pressured to leave the restaurant at all , we sat and enjoyed our bottle of wine -we have always had a lovely experience at this restaurant that’s why we always come back and recommend it to our friends Keep up the good work butler whites

Food was absolutely amazing and the team could not have been more polite. 100% worth your time even just for a drink.

We were a party of 25, family & friends celebrating our friends wedding day. Where do I start ... Not enough tables laid out. Hot plated food placed in front of a baby. Hair found in food. Chicken pink. The bride and her brothers food came after everyone had eaten, even though meals were pre-ordered - 2 hours after being seated. A full pot of steak sauce dropped down the mother of the bride's back, covering her hair /dress/shoes, and some part of the brides dress - thankfully it wasn't scalding liquid. Initial apology from the waitress concerned, but no concern after that. The bride was left to clean her mother, herself, and the floor, whilst been watched by 3 waitresses, until 1 offered to get a mop. Not a manager in site, infact she hid in the kitchen. Other diners proceeded to leave after witnessing what was going on at our table(s). Manager only emerged when she was demanded to be seen by family members. No applogy to the babys mum. No apology to the mother of the bride, who was devestated as she had to go home. My friend, the bride, was distraught, her husband was angry and extremely upset. The mangers way of handing this, was to offer a reduced bill, as long as we didn't slate them on social media. Still no apologies given, no concern shown, and no other correspondance sent. I am absolutely disgusted in this restaurant. I would NEVER recommend it, nor visit it ever again. Whoever the owner is, I am astounded that no e mail has been sent with regard to a wedding meal completely ruined by lack of service, professionilsm and compassion. Avoid Avoid Avoid

Excellent food , beautiful ambience, fabulous service and all round outstanding place! Took my 80 year old grandad - he said I’ve had some steak in my time but this trumps that!! Definitely be back and it’s 100 mile trip . Keep smashing it Team BW

Beware of the card charge when booking not being knocked off the final bill !! Food and service are good but noticed a week after our visit my card had been charged £20 for the booking. This was not knocked off the bill . Contacted them and was told a manager would ring me later that day to refund. Never received call. Disappointed with their lack of response.

Excellent Sunday lunch. A good choice of starters that were delicious. We had a different roast meat each so we could taste them all & none disappointed along with the huge Yorkshire puddings, crunchy roast potatoes & yummy gravy. The cauliflower cheese- a mark of a good Sunday Roast- was so good that even the one who doesn’t like cauli ate some! Good friendly service, lovely building.

We had a table booked for 830 - not very busy when we arrived. Starters lovely, but waitress couldn’t give information on what some of the menu items were! Also our steaks arrived without the advertised herb butter - waitress said they’d been cooked in it - they hadn’t! When mentioned again, she wasn’t interested. We had to ask for another round of drinks, never offered the dessert menu - we were the only table left in the restaurant at 945 and felt like we were in the way. The bill was presented to us without asking - when booking you are given a 2 hour time slot, we felt it was very rude and made us feel uncomfortable. Such a shame as we used to love the place - definitely won’t be returning.

Got told that there's going to be a wait as the kitchen was maxed. The restaurant was approx 50% capacity. Offered some olives and bread if we deferred ordering until they was quiter!! Ordered the prawn Thermidor which was nice but around 50% of the quantity it was three years ago! Ordered a Turkish pizza which was inedible!! Soaking wet !! The manager apologised and nothing to pay

Had been looking forward to a Sunday lunch here with friends however we were all quite underwhelmed tbh. We thought it was over priced, very average food. Poorest Sunday lunch out in a long time for us compared to other restaurants and pubs locally.

Starters were quite nice, one Salmon and I had Crispy Duck Egg. For mains we both had a steak (1 sirloin & 1 fillet ) both medium rare and they were perfect. Really tasty, 10/10 for the actual steak but unfortunately it was only accompanied by one very small half of tomato on a vine, one half of a very small mushroom and chips/fries straight out of the freezer and into the fryer. TBH the chips were like you’d get from your local kebab house !! ( for those who can remember……’Bun In The Oven’ had better chips/fries ). The wine was lovely ! The service was hit and miss, I think most of the staff need a bit of training. Don’t get me wrong, the atmosphere was ok, not a bad place to eat, toilets where clean etc but Butler Whites needs some Tweeking

We visited for a lunch/afternoon meal. We were promptly seated on a table near the window, it was clean and set already. The service was very prompt and efficient whilst with a smile. The food was excellent, two Sunday roast beef’s, a GF pizza and Vegetarian strudel. We had soft drinks to accompany. The roast beef was lovely, the vegetables soft al Dente, cheese cauliflower yummy, roast tatties crunchy and soft in the middle. The Yorkie was a belter and the gravy tasted homemade. The GF pizza had risen and was tasty, the strudel flavoursome and filling. £75 for 4 and a lovely Sunday lunch.

Amazing place , never knew this place existed

Positives: The food definitely couldn't be faulted and was absolutely delicious. We both had the Porchetta and it was amazing, with a side of honey glazed carrots and red cabbage and kale. Every mouthful was amazing. However, service was very, very slow. We waited an absolute age to get our first drinks (over 20 minutes) they weren't hugely busy as we'd booked nice and early. When the food was brought out we'd finished our first drinks but weren't asked if we'd like another and had to flag down a passing waitress to ask for 2 cocktails. Again, we were waiting a very long time. When they did arrive we'd finished eating but nobody removed out dirty plates for ages either. We'd finished our cocktails and would have had another one each plus a dessert but nobody came back to the table. When someone finally cleated the dirty plates we asked about a dessert menu. We were told one would be brought over. But it never was and we got fed up of waiting so asked for the bill. Waitress disappeared to get the card machine and never came back so we ended up paying at the bar. This is a moan as such, it's constructive criticism as the quality of the service didn't match the exceptional food, and that's a shame! Plus through not asking if we wanted a dessert and failing to bring a menu when asked that's a loss of the 2 desserts and 2 more cocktails we would have bought. However I can't say enough how amazing the food was and would still visit again. But it would be nice if the staff could be a little more attentive , notice when drinks are empty or that people have dirty plates and make sure they ask of dessert is required.

Visited for Sunday Lunch and was incredibly happy. The restaurant looks fantastic and is full of detail and lovely artwork across the walls. The staff were very attentive and helped out a lot with questions in regards to some of the more unusual names on the menu. Ordered the Lamb and it was rich, juicy and very tasty, mash creamy, buttery and full of flavour, cauliflower cheese was morish. The Yorkshire pudding had a bit more of a cakey consistency than I was expecting but it very much helped with soaking up some of the delicious gravy. My brother ordered pork and I tried a bit of that, melt in the mouth. Lovely. The Garlic, Thyme and Rosemary bread for starter was a great choice also. Very happy with my visit and would love to go again.

Good food, decent ambience, mediocre service.

Didn't have the best time, the staff were very friendly and kind. The cocktails were also good however, I ate the fish slate for one and right after I got stomach ache and was sick a few times throughout the evening. My boyfriend had the mushroom pizza which did taste good but the oil was running down his hands. We asked our waitress for the bill and waited an hour whilst she was partially stood about and even came back to ask if we want drinks which we said we were still waiting on the bill. Eventually a friendly waiter sorted our bill and we left. Then, as we were walking down the street the managers came chasing after us shouting which when we turned around she said we hadn't paid for our food as the previous waitress told her so. We said the waiter sorted our bill instead and then they were just saying "oh she's only 16 haha". It was really embarrassing as it made a big scene and people on the street were all looking...

Altogether a pleasant experience. Good ambiance. Good service. Not my usual way of serving beef. Used to thick cuts of beef. However was nice all the same. Veg was cooked to perfection. Cauliflower cheese was really nice with a crusty cheese top..No complaints here really..

Recently enjoyed a Sunday afternoon here with family. The restaurant was more or less full, luckily we had pre booked. Starter was a king prawn thermidor, followed by the duck. Both absolutely delicious.

The best team! Butler Whites hosted our wedding recently and the whole day was exceptional: the food, the service, the atmosphere. The venue is absolutely beautiful, too - highly recommend next time you're looking for a really great meal in Hull.

Great food. Had the Sunday lunch which was delicious. One of the party had steak which was very well cooked. So hurrah for the food and drink. Service was good to start but rather tailed off and a bit lacklustre towards dessets. Would visit again.

Its ok, might have been here at a bad time because it didn’t live up to its reputation. Not sure i would go again as the other eateries in the area offer more..

We decided to book this restaurant for our Sapphire Anniversary (45years) and celebrate with our family. From start to finish it was an experience we do not want to go through again. When we arrived they had not got our booking, some starters were over cooked,replaced twice. Mains were OK but not great and some only warm, my wife had the mussels and was up during the night with sickness???. After talking to the manager and just being fobbed off,we asked to speak to the owner Jason. He marched in with two doormen sat down at the table and because he saw 2plates ( sweets) empty said that there carnt be a lot wrong with the meal. After we tried talking to him he then became VERY aggressive and using bad language to the end that he then told us to leave the premises and banned us from it. Then his doormen started being aggressive outside. To Jason : After spending £245-00 in your restaurant I certainly will not be recommending this to anyone in the future. Came here for my partners birthday last night as I had read some good reviews online. We visited on a Friday evening so naturally it was quite busy and loud inside so we requested to be seated outside which was no problem at all - the table was sheltered too. We ordered the seafood slate and Henry's wings as starters, and the duck and a pizza for our mains. We both enjoyed everything we ate and I think the wings I had were some of the tastiest I've ever had in a restaurant. The pizza (I can't remember the name but it had beer-chicken and onion on it) was also delicious. We did wait a little longer than usual to be served/between courses (probably around 15-20 minutes at a time) but I think it is because we are used to visiting chain restaurants where everything is mass produced and microwaved that we even noticed the wait. Generally the staff were lovely and did everything they could for us. I've read a few reviews about the staff not being great but we thought they were really friendly and accommodating. If we ever come back to Hull this restaurant will definitely be considered again.

What an incredible experience in this restaurant, me and my family had the best night ever we definitely recommend this place and price is definitely worth it such an amazing chef, we are definitely going to come more often

Met friends here who we haven’t seen for a while and we wanted a good catch up with them but the young staff kept turning the music extremely loud. We couldn’t hear each other talk across the table. Asked for it to be turned down and it wasn’t. It was like eating in a night club not an expensive restaurant! Not the customer experience you expect when you’re paying £180 for four of you! Some staff were rude, throwing spoons down on the table. Shame as the food was nice and it should of been a lovely experience.

Disappointed! Have been here twice before and enjoyed it but not this time. Service was slow, drinks orders wrong and menu not as good as previous. Vegetarian options were just 1 main and 1 pizza both mushroom based. We both had pizza and it was average.

Inexperienced, rude staff. Wine was nice but didn't know how to pull a pint of Guinness.

Food was of high standard. Shame the service didn't match. Avoid the table sandwiched between the bar and a wall. I think this was the problem as the table isn't visible from the main dining hall (out of sight out of mind).

Love this place. The food is excellent. Unfortunately tonight I was disappointed with the service. Considering it wasn't busy I felt I should have had more attention. Twice I struggled to get a waitress to attend to my needs. My biggest issue was the fact that I was cold. We were initially sat at a window table. I asked to move table due to the cold draught from the entrance door. This was no problem at all, but even though we was moved to the middle of the restaurant it was still cold. Our food was lovely and on time. Even with my minor issues I would return again.

Not booked staff were all brilliant and welcoming. We were asked twice whether the food was ok and the food was piping hot and plentiful. We will definitely be going back. I had a lovely alcohol free fruit extravaganza.

I am sat in the glorious late summer sunshine, drinking lovely dry cider and enjoying the bustle of a vibrant quay here in Hull as good as Barbados today!

Nice steak but under staffed- taken for 60th birthday.

It's was ok. The vegi curry did look like they used microwave rice, but it tasted nice. Took ages for service but maybe they are under staffed. Definitely not worth the price. Shame as I heard good things but maybe I'll try again.

Meal for 3 on Friday 13 August 2021 lucky for us. Lovely meal, chicken wings starter gorgeous, main course steak tender then chocolate brownie dessert beautiful. Service with a smile! And a table in the sun. What's not to like. Thanks Butler Whites for a wonderful lunch!

If you enjoy paying West end prices for east end food then this is the place for you. And the wait time was ridiculous. 45 mins for a steak and chips ? Really?just get more staff and stop being tight! At those prices you can afford it. Also teach the chef how to cook a steak because the one he served to us was laughable .

Arrived at 2.30 and i asked to book a table for about 4.00. Was told to come back at that time as it would have quietened down. Went back at 4.00,was shown to a table, given drink and food menu, whilst looking through, another member of staff came and told me that they don't serve food after 4.00!! A waste of my time!!

First trip in for a while and first since the Covid pandemic. Food was excellent and so were the staff.

Enjoyed a lovely meal with friends. Food was lovely and cooked to perfection, service was great and all covid measures adhered to perfectly. Politely reminded of last order for drinks with plenty of time to drink before leaving. Booking was originally for April, but lockdown had obviously delayed this - Alex particularly helped us to rearrange and basically catered for our every need and numerous phone calls beforehand! More places need people as helpful as her! Will definitely be back!

Visited with our daughter and friends. All agreed the food was lovely, couldn’t be faulted. Very let down by the service. Daughter wasn’t even offered one of the drinks which was included on children’s menu, beer which was ordered never arrived but was included on the bill, asked for sauce which never arrived and had to ask for the bill twice. Waiting in between causes a long time. More staff needed as all of this really let the place down.

First visit to here. We went post-covid, felt safe, lots of measures in place. The food was amazing, we had calamari (best we have ever had), prawn thermidor (gorgeous), the potatoe bread (wow) - we was full with these starters that we didn't get very far with our pizzas - but they boxed them up for us. Will definately be back.

My partner and I booked a table for 8:30pm to celebrate his 30th birthday, we travelled from London and we’re in Hull for the weekend. The welcoming staff were lovely and sat us to our table very quickly. A waitress came over to us to take our drink order and we managed to order a cocktail which was not on the menu. We ordered two starters and a baked bread, all were lovely and delicious. We ordered two mains, I had the pork and my partner had the sirloin, both again were delicious. After our mains we had desserts, however this was a let down as there wasn’t a dessert menu, but they had desserts on. On asking what they had for desserts we were not told that the brownie I had ordered was vegan, until the waitress bought them over. The desserts weren’t anything special and the lack of a dessert menu was a slight let down. However, we both thoroughly enjoyed our evening, the atmosphere, the drinks and the food (except the desserts). On another note all the staff were very attentive and welcoming. We will be back and we thank them for a lovely evening.

Vegetarian options where very limited . Food took an hour to come, once came it wasn’t the best and over priced . Bald headed waiter with sloppy appearance stunk of alcohol, overheard him saying he had a hang over . I will not be returning.

After months of not being able to eat out we decided to try Butler Whites as it had been a while since we had last been. We were a little apprehensive about eating out with restrictions still in place however our experience at Butler Whites was brilliant! The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive. Thank you very much for a fantastic post lockdown meal!

Went for our first meal out since lockdown. Very well organised with a guy on the door and hand sanitizer, tables spaced out. We had tomato and presto bread for starters followed by the most beautiful Roast beef Sunday lunch. Very nice.

Lovely, well designed restaurant. The ambience is great. The problem for me is the lack of choice for vegetarians. One main meal option!! Therefore had to opt for a pizza, which was nice but not what I was hoping to be eating this evening. Disappointed with the food options but lovely restaurant.

Stumbled upon this place last night and from walking in to walking out the service was A*. Friendly staff prompt service and kudos to the chef because the steak and peppercorn sauce was next level.

Eaten here before and food is always good, however booked a table for 7:30 on Saturday and was really disappointed that they had run out of sirloin steak especially as 3 of our party wanted to order it ! Although the food we had was good when you book a table for 7:30 on a Saturday you expect they will have the full menu and not already run out of options!!

Very very poor service, the waitresses were walking with their eyes on the floor so that they wouldn't cross eyes with any customers and they would have to do something. Food was inedible, very poor quality and pasta was so salty you couldn't have more than 2 bites. Avoid!

Went here on my birthday i had a lamb stew type dish with cheesy mash on top and veg which was absolutely beautiful, my mrs had a spicy sausage pizza which she wasnt jeen in as had alot of oil on top, she only ate 2 slices but when asked how meal was mentioned about pizza and they knocked it off bill so cant complain about that, was handled brilliantly. Initially staff were attentive taking drinks order and bringing menus, but from then on the service was dire, nobody came to our table and we had to get their attention to ask for things. The waiting staff seemed to be wandering aimlessly with no direction from anyone. The food was fab and we couldn't fault it but the waiting staff need work. It used to be one of their strong points. Have still marked high due to quality of food and drinks and would return, but hopefully they can address this problem with training/right staff.

What a shame we had a bad Sunday lunch experience here as I’ve been on an evening which was lovely.From start to finish the service was really poor. We were brought the wrong drinks and had to go and sort this out ourselves as the staff weren’t about when we needed them. We tried to order food only to be told that the waitress was only doing drinks orders. Eventually food was ordered and arrived in a few minutes - never a good sign. It looked amazing and really nicely presented, however, there was no serving spoons in the sides so we had to wait to ask for those while the food was getting cold. Personally I found the veg and the potatoes lovely, the Yorkshire puddings were huge although a bit hard and seemed like they’d been pre-cooked and warmed up again. But the worst was the beef- unfortunately it was stringy and tough to cut - it was so stringy in fact my friend nearly choked on his as it got stuck down his throat! After a few scary minutes of me whacking his back to try to dislodge the meat it finally came out, but he was so embarrassed at the scene this caused! Not at any point in that episode did a member of staff come to see if he was okay which I found bizarre! When the plates were cleared we told the member of staff about this to which she just replied ‘sorry about that’ not would you like some water or how are you? We paid the bill and left.

Had a lovely dining experience on Valentines day! We were impressed by the outstanding quality and creativity of the menu. The portions are very generous so you could skip starters and go straight to mains. Staff were polite & attentive, and each table got a red rose <3. Ten years ago places like this didnt exist in Hull, the dining scene has improved drastically since the City of Culture award and Butler and Whites is testament to this .

We arrived on time and were promptly shown to our table. It was a very busy night. The waitress soon took our orders for food and which point we also ordered our drinks. The starter took a while to arrive but was worth waiting for. The Prawn Thermidor was beautiful. Unfortunately this is when our experience went downhill. Our table was not cleared for 45minutes and we still had a further wait for our mains. When questioning the waitress if there was a problem, we were simply told “we’re just super busy”. Sorry, but is this not a restaurant??Food was lovely on arrival but the delay spoiled our night.

Top class food, amazing food and a menu with plenty of variety. From the minute we arrived all of the service we had was fantastic but not too overbearing. I had lamb and the other half had the noodles both dishes came out steaming hot and we’re so tasty. The prices aren’t ridiculous either.

Just got home from eating a lovely Sunday dinner.I had the Barnsley chop and it didn't disappoint.Nice veg with it too.Will be going back to try the belly pork.My Brother in law had that and i had pork envy.He said it was really good.
