Bushell’s Riverside in South Hams

We are on holiday in the area and literally stumbled across this wonderful restaurant for lunch, and we were delighted we did. Our table, as with others, overlooked the estuary (what an amazing view!); Sarah, the co-owner, was so friendly, attentive and accommodating (nothing was too much trouble); as for the the food (cooked by her husband and co-owner Jaime), well this was simply delicious in all respects, in fact quite outstanding, as was the whole presentation. What an experience! Certainly not one to be missed!

We had travelled an hour to get to your restaurant and were looking forward to having seafood with a view. You are advertised as open on a Sunday on Tripadvisor along with signs on your premises saying you should have been open. You were not. You need to update your Tripadvisor along with your own advertised opening hours.

2nd visit for this fabulous 2 course Sunday carvery with choice of 3 meats including lamb which was gorgeous served with large selection of fresh vegetables including cauliflower cheese plus homemade Yorkshire and choice of dessert. All this for only £20 members and £22.50 non members think this excellent value in a town that food seems to rise every time I go out. Great service from Sarah and resident barman Phil. Highly recommend but is essential to book as getting busier each week.

We went here with my wife and three children for an evening meal. It is a lovely family run restaurant with great views over t Kingswear. The kids menu is good value and we had Seaford Grazer for main which was really nice. The host is friendly and attentive and the food is good.

Perfect evening. Booking needed. Small cosy restaurant. The scallops were perfectly cooked.. sublime! Samphire was a perfect combination, fresh and crunchy washed down with an Italian white wine. The special was pan-fried lamb with daphinoise potatoes... all perfectly cooked and filling. Reasonably prices. If you didn't want lamb or steak, there was a choice of pizzas or fish and chips (fish of the day). The best part was the suggestion of Amaretto with Affogato to finish! Amazingly tasty! Highly recommended

Small, intimate with a rather large, stylish window on the world, Kingswear, mainly! Three of us, 2 starters, 3 roasts and 2 desserts, 4 (alcoholic) drinks for around £95. The starters, which were bruschetta and chicken paté, were good and tasty. For mains: 2x beef roasts and 1x lamb, which were delicious and served with cauliflower, brocoli and peas + Yorkshire pudding. I would recommend!

Great food but rushed service. Would have been better if they hadn’t shoe horned a further table in the small surroundings. Felt rushed throughout the experience as if they didn’t want us there.

Great spot in Dartmouth! The restaurant is quite small (probably only 7 or 8 tables). The waitress who served me could not have been nicer, the food was good, and the setting was very cosy and welcoming. Well worth the walk in torrential rain this evening!!

We visited on a very blustery wet evening with dog in tow. Our hostess was exceptionally welcoming. The restaurant has a beautiful setting looking out onto the estuary . It was smaller and more intimate than I expected with a relaxed atmosphere. Couldn’t fault the food - delicious mussels with chorizo, huge crispy fish and chips. The sourdough pizzas are excellent and also make a good sharing starter. Proper sticky, sticky toffee pudding. All sensibly priced. Overall the hostess and the atmosphere made for a very enjoyable evening on what was a miserable wet evening.

Visited late Feb for dinner with hubby. We both had a lovely meal….i had fish and chips and hubby had the 3 course menu ..with feathered steak as his main. Both meals were delicious. Overall lovely ambiance and great food. Well worth a visit!

Excellent high quality meal. We both went for the set menu. This was great value and the beef was so tender. Lovely setting and the staff where very friendly and knowledgeable . Would highly recommend .

A brilliant riverside restaurant with great food and excellent friendly service.

We were a party of 10 celebrating a 90th birthday. I booked on line and asked for a quiet area to satisfy our elderly relatives. The owner telephoned to get more details to make sure we were fully accommodated. The food was amazing, beautifully cooked, seasonal veg and plenty. Our 90 year old Uncle said it was the best garlic prawns he's ever had (and he's well travelled). This venue was perfect for our family celebration, not overwhelming for our two 90 year olds and informal enough for the two children in our party. We will definitely be revisiting this hidden gem on our return visits as we come to Dartmouth often.

I truly enjoyed the atmosphere of this family run restaurant. There is a good choice of locally sourced food as well as excellent choice of wines. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to spend a pleasant dinner with family or friends.

We went to Bushell’s on the last evening of our holiday, it was the perfect way to end a fantastic week in Dartmouth. As the weather was beautiful we sat in their outdoor area with views across the estuary. My wife had king prawns and I had a pizza, both were cooked to perfection and delicious. We are here to celebrate our engagement. Turned up on a very busy Thursday evening after our original booking elsewhere had fallen through with no where to celebrate. The lovely lady (who I’m assuming is the owner ) was very accommodating and re opened the out door eating area for us. We were then waited on by Miles who was very attentive and helpful. The food was absolutely amazingly cooked and the service was excellent. They very kindly gave us some Prosecco on the house after our meal which topped it off. We were very lucky to eat here and if you’re in the local are you absolutely should stop by!!

Dag ervoor binnengelopen om tafel te reserveren. 18:30 Was niet mogenlijk, maar 18:00 uur wel. Komen om 17:50 uur binnen en blijkt onze reservering niet terug te vinden, terwijl wij erbij stonden toen deze werd genoteerd inclusief telefoonnummer. Oplossing was: Sorry, maar gaat niet of u moet nu plaats nemen en binnen 1 uur en 20 minuten weg zijn. Dit klinkt echt als gastvrijheid zoals het niet hoort. Terugkijkend in reviews is onze ervaring niet opzichzelf staand. Dus wees gewaarschuwd dat uw tafel misschien niet beschikbaar is!

Okay for a lunch, menu offers a good selection. Tha pizza was tasty, sweet potato fries delicious and fish and chips above average in taste and below average price. The staff pleasant and loos clean.

Unfortunately had a pretty bad experience at this restaurant. Absolutely horrible service and the head waitress who lied to us twice. (The table she said was booked for 5 people was given to a couple, our table which was booked at 7:30pm for 4 people wasn’t available until 8pm and many excuses were given). Shellfish was lovely and fresh. King prawns and scallops very fresh and delicious. Fish and chips, however, the most horrible I ever had. Tasted burnt and dry, quite foul tasting. Toilet dirty, without towels or paper. Overall - pretty disappointed.

A lovely outdoor seating area with magnificent views across the harbour out to sea. No need to have booked, just turned up and got seated. A very nice parma ham pizza - I recommend the coleslaw to go with it. Chicken salad lovely too. Mind your head in the toilet!

A visit to the Bushell's was on our shortlist for our visit to England. The lunch (menu: Seaside grazer) was delicious. Fresh salicornia in the salad. Tasty prawns, crab meat, mackrell mousse, crevettes, squid, smoked salmon, crusty bread. Everything super fresh and plenty. Very friendly owners. Great location ( harbour view) We won't forget our visit to Dartmouth. We will come back whenever we can. Thanks!

Came here for lunch. Ordered the “grilled in the shell scallops” and “garlic buttered crevettes”. Both tasted amazing, really flavoursome and fresh. Service staff were attentive and helpful too.

I visited on Friday 11th March 2022 for dinner and it was lovely. Although the menu may look small, there's a good level of variety and also daily specials. We had the scallops and "specials board" hake and both were delicious. I visited again on Sunday 13th, for lunch this time, to try the pizza. The base was covered in a layer of flour which dried it out a little but it was still a nice meal and I would have it again. We were able to walk in both times with it being out of season but was advised by the lovely owner that they book up fast for summer so you're better booking in advance. Also they have outdoor seating by the river in summer which I look forward to trying out. Overall a lovely experience and I will definitely visit again.

Busy quayside restaurant with local produce and a friendly welcome. Limited inside space but tables on quay overlooking the water were very happy place to be. Torbay Sole special was delicious!

Great food and the staff were so friendly. The price is unbelievable considering the location and quality of the place and food. We even got to see a seal who berthed on the pontoon outside the restaurant. We will be back next year.

Sharing platter was delicious and a nice amount for two people. The calamari small plate was also very good. Would highly recommend both. Great location, with the outdoor seating on the sea front. First come first served for the outdoor seating so it's worth getting there a bit before opening lunch time on a sunny day.

We just stumbled on this place after getting off the lower ferry, which is just around the corner. It is currently offering a small varied menu and we both chose the arrancini with the rocket and parmesan salad. It was delicious.Service was good and outside seats come with blankets - a great little addition.

Grabbed a weekend in Dartmouth before lock down number 2, and chose Burchells for our Saturday night dinner treat. Warm welcome greeted us and we were seated immediately. Thought the restaurant lacked any ambience and was cold...I didnt take my coat off at all. However the menu was varied and when our meals arrived they were both delicious and beautifully presented. The restaurant itself seemed to not quite be able to decide whether it was fine dining as the quality of our meals would suggest - or cafe and takeaway.However - we live in strange times at the moment especially for those in the hospitality trade...so whatever it takes to stay in business must be very hard work and deserves congratulations for staying afloat. We wish them well and hope the situation improves for everyone very soon.
