Burger Shack in Exeter - Phone Number, Reservations, Reviews

Visited with friends for a drink and decided to have a meal. 3 of the 4 meals were ok but the 4th being fish and chips arrived with peas like bullets. When staff member was called over and told that the peas were inedible he replied 'sorry about that' and made no attempt to offer a solution, I then repeated that they were inedible and his reply was 'well what do you want me to do about it?' in a confrontational way. I pushed the plate away and was quite dumbfounded by his response and attitude so I said 'absolutely nothing' he then replied 'ok' and walked away! He then went to another staff member and they went to the kitchen area. I then went and got the manager and made him aware and he commented that he was one of his best employees. He took my meal away and it was replaced but I ended up not eating it all as I was left eating on my own as everyone else had finished their meals. They did not charge us for the meal but we will not eat there again! Since the refurbishment they are trying to be upmarket but failing! A totally disappointing experience and overall poor value for money!

Visited on a Friday evening with around 30 work colleagues where we were to enjoy the fruits of the burger shack and bar hut in the garden to the rear which is a lovely sun trap on a summer's evening. I ordered a veggie I burger and was advised it would take about 8 minutes, so decided to wait at the shack. What transpired was most disappointing, very poor practice and probably contrary to food hygiene regulations. As I waited, some burger buns were toasted on the corner of the griddle plate where meat products were cooking. The cook put fresh burgers onto the griddle, then, with no sign of washing his hands, prepared the next burger buns in a box where he started to dress them with lettuce, relish, etc. All the prep was done on a single green chopping board, the utensils used were used for all elements of all burgers and there was no sign of segregation of raw and cooked meat products, nor the vegetable products. The veggie burger was then placed on the same griddle as the meat burgers to cook!!! Needless to say, I raised the matter, whereby the 'cook' was quite incredulous and threw the veggie burger into the bin, suggesting I could get a different burger from the main kitchen. I pointed out that there were other vegetarians in our party who would be most upset in knowing they had essentially eaten meat products. City Gate, if you are catering for vegetarian options to meat products for an ever increasing section of consumers, please have the courtesy to treat them and their choices with some respect. Basic separation of the products should be a given and It would also be a good idea to follow basic food hygiene procedures and to use gloves, hand washing and separate preparation surfaces to keep your raw and cooked products from cross-contamination. We have booked another meal here later in the year for lots of colleagues and I shall be withdrawing from this unless there is evidence of significant improvement. City Gate, you should be ashamed. Clean up your act.
