Bunga Raya in Stockport

As a Malaysian, I am very disappointed to say that their food lacks the authentic Malaysian taste some diners might expect. While the restaurant is praised for its traditional flavours and quality ingredients in the other reviews, the dishes did not fully capture the essence of Malaysian food. The menu provides a variety of options, yet some dishes may fall short of delivering the genuine Malaysian taste that local Malaysians seek. For example, I have tried their nasi lemak, mee goreng and masak lemak. To start off, although the nasi lemak had the basic components of what a nasi lemak would have, the sambal was not as spicy. Their mee goreng was made with spaghetti/pasta instead of the usual egg noodles that you would usually get at your typical local eatery back in Malaysia. Last but not least, the masak lemak was NOT masak lemak at all. It’s supposed to be a spicy turmeric based curry, instead I received a tomato based sweet curry. That was the biggest disappointment for me as a masak lemak lover. Overall, it's a pleasant spot for a meal, but those looking for an authentic Malaysian experience might find it slightly lacking. I ordered takeaway from this restaurant so I can’t say much about the service and atmosphere.

Really tasty, incredibly well valued. It is a little back room kitchen place but you cannot beat the value for money. Service is great… have and will come back again

We visited on Saturday June 29th . We had one of the set meals and a bottle of wine.we had prawn crackers first followed by the mixed starters which were battered king prawns, crispy pork dumplings , chicken satay skewers with spicy and satay sauce and these were amazing. The rest of the set meal was out of this world with nasi goreng rice, rainbow noodles, crispy duck, fish rendang (genuinely the best dish I've ever had - it is so good it is wrong 😲- I'm 57 by the way- so tried a few in my time around the world!) tomato king prawns and chicken noodles (we ordered this as an extra as I love rice noodle dishes) We couldn't eat all of it !! - we had this with a bottle of red wine. We paid £85 for two - but not sure of what the bill was (less than this) but always feel we've under paid because the food is so amazing. It's cash only so make sure you have the cash with you. If you haven't visited before you must try this. Different to Chinese - but in my opinion and everyone who's been on my recommendation better - since coming here many years ago we've not visited a Chinese restaurant and don't regret it !!

Excellent food and friendly service

A true hidden gem. Spotted this place whilst working and decided to give it a go from the vibes alone. Never tried Malaysian food so this was a first. Truly blown away all round. Quality of the food is unbelievable and you can tell it’s cooked fresh. Staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome. Overall, I still can’t believe that a sharing starter for two, three main dishes and three large beers cost only £50! It’s a bit of a drive for me but this is certainly going to become our new regular. I’m now inspired to attempt some Malaysian home cooking after eating some of the tastiest food iv had in a while!

Absolutely stunning restaurant The food is 10 out of 10, I recommend the crispy duck it literally melts in your mouth and the chicken dumplings are absolutely stunning, the dipping sauce that the spring rolls come with is absolutely mouth watering. I genuinely can't speak of this place highly enough, I would 100% recommend booking a table as its such a tiny place.

We were recommended to try here by Lee who has been visiting for years - what a great place. Everything we ordered was just the right portion size, cooked great & tasted fab. Starters were great followed by the Duck with satay sauce was hubsters choice , whilst i opted for the Drunken Chicken. Finished off with dessert. Will def return and most definitely recommend

Wow .. Super. Visited this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend and we were truly amazed. I could go every night, the food is delicious. All cooked to order and very reasonably priced. The fish dishes are superb and my husband adores the duck dishes. To finish pineapple fritter, what a treat.

Best food in stockport by a landslide. Service is brilliant and it's cheap 6 starters and 6 mains and 11 drinks for £110.

A nice cosy local family run restaurant, our first and we were expecting more authentic Malaysian food experience. Unfortunately we did not get the real Malay food

The food is a must try, it's really-really good and the waitress was very kind as well, as friendly as the prices. They don't accept card though, so make sure you have cash with you.

Amazing food ...5 star all the way

Our first time back in around 6 years, we thought we'd give it a try since Peter had moved on. We we're greeted with a smile even though it was a busy Saturday evening and we hadn't booked. Still fantastic value for money. Both mains were delicious, especially the Malaysian Satay Crispy Duck. If we visited again, we'd probably choose individual starters. We both went with the mixed platter which tbh was just ok, all deep fried. Remember it's cash only. I'd forgotten so consequently got drenched in the rain on my dash to the nearest cashpoint, which is twice the distance it was 6 years ago :-)

Everyone is so nice. The Char Kuey Tiau with prawn is sooo good. I went to malaysian restaurant in London but this is better

Bunga raya is a friendly family run restaurant. Although the menu is limited( chicken, duck, seafood & vegetables), nevertheless the food is tasty. However, its cheap as chips and a starter, main and 3 bottles of singha beer( the larger 500ml bottles) came to just over £20.

First time we have visited and defiantly wont be the last. Fantastic food and good service,. Very reasonably priced you do need to book.

Wow an amazing, authentic Malaysian restaurant. I have spent a lot of time in Penang, and the food here is just like being over there. Great staff and very reasonable.

Lovely cosy restaurant with nice ambience. Food is so tasty and extremely reasonable in price. Tip - if you have a large appetite order a couple of sides as well - the prices make it worth doing. My portion was the perfect size and didn't overface me like restaurant meals usually do, but my partner needed extra. Will definitely return.

Unbelievable food again.....this is street food way before street food was a thing......authentic and unbelievably good.....no better Malaysian around!!!! Stunning

Run by a delightful couple who do all the delicious cooking and serving. Meals are not massive but they concentrate on the lovely flavours of Malaysia cooking. Definitely recommend this small but delicious restaurant.....

Fantastic restaurant in Hazel Grove. Food is delicious with some great choices. All is so fresh tasting. Family run so has an authentic feel to it and the staff are really friendly.

Been coming here for possibly over 20 years when they were originally open in Stockport. Not been for a long time, but food was still superb and excellent value.

Gorgeous freshly cooked food and friendly and efficient service

I have been going here for years it’s Malaysian home cooking, my favourite dish is the Laksa a spicy noodle soup with prawn and chicken (up in my top 5 favourite foods), always have a big bottle of Singha love to have tofu starter and dumplings, I can’t speak highly enough of the family who run the restaurant they are some of the nicest people I have ever met; I try to pop my head in the kitchen to say thanks for the wonderful food.

We go here about twice a month. Been going for years. The food is cooked to order and always tasty. Friendly staff. This is a family business and is struggling in these hard times in 2020 with restrictions on opening etc so please support it when you can. Cash only. No card payments so try and remember that. Its only small and with distancing now in place its probably best to phone and book.

You would barely notice this place passing by and inside it is quite small and plain but it turned out to be a real gem.Three of us went and we didn't want too much so we shared a starter of mixed bits and pieces. We then ordered three different mains, all less than a tenner, and took bits from each. All three were very tasty and went well with the rice and noodles. The wine list seemed to be either House Red or House White so we had a bottle of the red which turned out to be a pretty good South African Cabernet Sauvignon and cost only £10. The service was very good and the total for the whole lot was £50. Exceptional value and great grub.

We went to this restaurant (6 people) and had a great meal at a fantastic price. It's only a small restaurant so you need to book, you are well looked after and definitely will be coming back here again

We were treated to a meal here last Thursday evening. This is the best food I have ever eaten!! The staff, atmosphere ,price etc were perfect

What a hidden treasure! This place is fantastic. Great service, absolutely beautiful fresh food & lovely ambience. So cute inside & it attracts lovely people to the restaurant. Would most definitely highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back again on plenty of occasions. Also very good prices. Only £33 for 2 of us to have 1 starter, 3 mains & 2 large bottles of beer!

Yet again we've been again to Bunga Raya and had set menu B and the food and service is exquisite. Book and go - it's a local family business and they're amazing !! You think you've had enough of Chinese / Thai - this is Malaysian and is different - and better!!

I have been here twice now and had different meals each time, the food is very tasty and authentic. The service is excellent! The only reason for the four stars is the menu is a little limited!

Top notch service with a great selection of dishes. Whilst its not indian or thai which most peaople are familiar with, the descriptions are easily recognisable and we got what we were expecting, not bad for a first visit. Good portions and tasty don't really cover it, it was better than that.

We were really hoping for this place to be as good as the reviews made it out to be. Sadly not. Great service and very reasonable prices were a good start. The char kuey teow was good too - nicely spiced, well cooked with plenty of succulent king prawns. The sambal ayam, unfortunately, was insipid at best - with nothing like the sambal kick we were expecting. And the Nyonya curry prawns were, well, more like something from a generic Chinese takeaway than an aromatic spicy fusion dish. Loads of juicy prawns though. Based on the char kuey teow, we'll definitely be back to try their laksa and maybe some nasi goreng. Hopefully we just chose our dishes badly.

Went with friends who have visited before, we received a warm welcome to this small restaurant. So glad we booked as the restaurant was full.

We were taken to this little hideaway by Old friends - and what a gem of a place. A very lovely greeting, a small compact ex shop but fine. Right on the A6 again so back street parking. Lots of food, lots of vino and about £90 for 4 of us, three courses and wine by the bottle. Weird cellar loos, but clean and tidy. Would def’ go again - simply to try all the good sounding fare

We had a group of 14 booked in, with a pre-selected set menu to save all the faff with ordering on the night. It was a good mix of dishes, with plenty of food and all very nice. Service was spot on (just with one lady), both food and drink were excellent value, thanks. I’d like to drop back and try some other dishes.

Lovely food great prices and wonderful friendly staff a must for good food

Estábamos ansiosos por comer en el Bunga Raya después de leer las críticas y recibir recomendaciones, sin embargo, estábamos muy decepcionados. Deceptively good. You would never guess from the decor just how nice the food was going to be. Home cooked Malaysian food. Super friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Would go again. Update: been several times since my first review. It has been consistently five stars every time.

We try to keep ourselves away from Bunga Raya because we don't want to spoil a perfect restaurant by going too often. We always go for the set menu b - it's amazing - the amazing family friendly atmosphere and the nicest food make it difficult to stay away for long. With bottles of wine at £9. This is the best value restaurant we've ever been to. Don't eat Chinese it's boring and lacks authenticity - Bunga Raya has this in abundance.

Went to celebrate our sons 15th Birthday on Sunday night. We've been wanting to go for ages but can never get a table. What a lovely place, so friendly the lady serving us was so kind She had put balloons on the chair for our son. The food was delicious and the service fabulous. Asked for a bottle of wine and was given a lovely bottle of 'good wine' of which we were only charged £10 ( the same wine sells in Sainsbury's for £8) She also gave the boys free Banana Fritters. We had a lovely night I would highly recommend

Small and intimate, food was amazing, very tasty. Don't expect 5* dining and a massive range of foods but for the price it was well worth it.

I am sure you are in no doubt that I really rate this small restaurant. Our friends who invite us to join them, said that Peter had left front of house, and they were anxious that standards may have slipped. Well I am delighted to say that a seemless change over has taken place, and we were warmly welcomed by a charming hostess. I will try not to go on about the excellently of the food, juicy prawns, crispy duck and fish, and several other delights which all arrived from the set banquet. You cannot fault any course. I just don't know how they offer the quality of food at the price. The wine too is unbelievable at supermarket prices. Do support this restaurant, it fully deserves to keep succeeding, absolutely a little gem.

This was the only restaurant in Hazel Grove that we hadn’t tried, and we certainly saved the best until last. The food is fantastic, the prices are crazy and the staff are so welcoming.
