Buchan Braes Hotel - Grill Room in Aberdeenshire

We met in the Buchan braes hotel for our first date 12 years ago and have been many times for meals, weddings and other events. Tonight we went back for our first meal in the hotel as our anniversary and we were thrilled with the welcome we received, the amazing friendly hospitality and the delicious food we ate. What a treat. So glad they are serving this standard of food again after the break due to covid. We will be back. Chef your lemon posset is the best desert I have ever eaten

Buchan Braes is back. Residents only at the moment but fabulous meal. Excellent variety of choice and wonderfully cooked and presented. Staff could not have been more attentive. Chef even came pver to apologise for the wait we experienced for our sweet. This was no problem having watched him with awe as he dished out main corses for a party of twenty. Wonderful to watch and great to have you back

Stayed for a couple of days for work recently. Double standard room was very comfortably furnished. The team in the hotel were all friendly and attentive throughout my stay. The food could be the best feature of this hotel though. Lovely breakfast and had a delicious evening meal in the restaurant. Overall a really great stay.

Visited for a meal while staying at the lighthouse cottage. Had steak and chips and peppercorn sauce. Steak was exceptional as was bramble sorbet. Best of all was the banoffee cocktail I had for dessert. I’ll be back next year for another.

Excellent greeting upon our arrival. Service worthy of a Michelin restaurant. With white gloved, formally dressed servers and a warm yet special atmosphere. The communication from start to finish was exquisite and the food served with lovely presentation, temperature and flavor. I would not hesitate to return. Special occasion or any occasion. Magnifique.

Well have been to Buchan Braes many times in the past and swore I wouldn’t go back due to substandard expensive food that they serve but we were given a voucher by a relative as a present so didn’t want to waste it and having been over a year since last visit it will surely have improved......how wrong were we!! Service was ok but again not 4star as it claims and the food is nothing short of laughable for a hotel that claims to be 4 star! I ordered chicken supreme with haggis and Drambuie sauce and what came was a car crash! Tough chewy over cooked chicken dropped on top of a haggis slice with 2 Brussel sprouts and some dry dauphinois potatoes drizzled in GRAVY!!! 😂😂 The wife had Pork escalopes with linguine which was better but again certainly not 4 star. 2 pathetic main courses, 1 glass of wine, 1 shandy all for £47 what an absolute rip off for such dross! Said it before and will say it again this place is a joke!

The rooms here are fine, but the food is really really good. The service is what you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. It's our third visit here on business and we will be back. The staff are polite and very efficient. Just the sort of hotel for a holiday or business trip. It beats all the other hotels in the area.

Three couples dined on a Saturday night, choosing the two course menu. All of the chosen starters were considered excellent, as was the beef dish chosen as main. However, the haddock dish was unanimously criticized as dry and overcooked. We would have liked a cheaper entry point to the wine list, and were disappointed when they could not produce a second bottle of the red wine chosen from their printed wine list. The service was friendly and efficient.

Enjoyed a lovely meal while staying in nearby Buchan Ness Lighthouse for a short break. I was worried about the lack of atmosphere as mentioned in previous reviews but on the night of our visit it was fine. Food and service were excellent and far surpassed our expectations.

We have been here a few times now and always enjoy our visit. The staff are always polite and helpful, the food is always very good and everything is always clean. Would certainly go back.

This is the old Officers mess, a relic from RAF Buchan days. The bar and dining area are barn like in size and lack atmosphere and the bar staff are so few that service is poor and slow. Once you get an order in though and are shown to your table, the food arrives promptly and we all had haddock and chips. Either breaded or battered it doesn't matter as it was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented though it would be even better if served with peas! I'll keep coming back for more! Highly recommended!

Myself and family had Christmas lunch at Buchan braes. The food and service was excellant, the staff deserved a medal that day as it was really busy and they coped so very well. I could not fault Buchan braes at all, on a particularly busy day. I visit here quite regularly and was glad they kept their usual standards on a really busy day.

I always stay here when I am visiting for work, the rooms are spacious and the food is always great! I always choose my salmon scrambled eggs and mushrooms for breakfast! Staff are always polite and will show you to your table, we normally sit for a drink, order our food and then we are shown to our table. My friend is also vegetarian and they are always more than happy to cook something of her choice which is not on the menu. Great service.

Visited for lunch on a Wednesday, politely shown to a sofa to read the menu, drinks order taken. Drinks provided and food order taken, left to chat. After a little while the waiter invited us to lunch and showed us to our table offering fresh bread. Food then arrived after a few minutes, breaded haddock was delicious, proper chips and a nicely dressed salad. Overall a very pleasant lunch with tasty well presented food and five star service all at pub prices.

2 course Sunday lunch was excellent we both had the prawn and sweet pepper starter followed by the rib eye roast dinner. Staff very attentive and very well trained . We didn’t book in but luckily staff found is a table no problem.

We called in as a group for a lite lunch, which was fine. We were not expecting a sit down formal situation but it was very nice.

Stayed here a couple of times - never been disappointed in the rooms or restaurant. Rooms always clean and tidy with good facilities - tea and coffee with shortbread ! Restaurant very good with varied food choice - although steaks are the best ! Staff very pleasant and eager to help.

My wife and I often dine here, other establishments would do well to take some tips and hints from this place. There isn’t anywhere else in the area that offers this standard of food and service. A great atmosphere inside, friendly professional waiting staff and absolutely delicious food. Treat yourself and try to forget about the couple of quid more it costs to eat here in comparison to the other mundane eateries in the Peterhead area. Definitely recommended.

I went with friends for an overnight stay, we were made to feel very welcome at our check in. My room was spacious and very clean the bed was very comfortable. In the evening we had a lovely meal waitress service was excellent. Had breakfast next morning, which was freshly cooked to order again very very tasty. Really enjoyed my visit as did my friends.

First time, looking for something different for Mother in law's birthday, thought I'd splash out but was presently surprised £22 for 3 courses of beautiful food, service and plenty of space between tables. I'll be back

well I've always loved the Buchan Braes,but such a shock to check out the menu before going and looking forward to our meal to find out they cut the menu in half or less because the holiday time is over. I was not aware folk only eat in the Hotel at the holiday period. I always enjoy our meal so I was surprised to be served a fillet steak that was not up to to their amazing standard. if I was a chef I would just bin it apologise and make another. I think because we were the only ones in the restaurant they just served it so they could clear up for the night. I appreciate they've had a busy time but if we are paying the full price I expect the same standard. the ribeye was beautiful. amazing chips where a lot of places serve frozen chips that are never nice. staff lovely can't fault this place normally.shame it ruined our after festive visit. thankfully they never charged for the fillet. will still go back. I just wanted them to realise if it looks poor bin it and start again,folk might only get one good night out in a long time and it can be your spacial night.

Aberdeenshire's only 4 Star Hotel and they deserve it! Well run hotel. ALL staff friendly and welcoming. Great food - a bit pricey but worth it for a special occasion, or like us frequently, a small snack. No matter how much or little ordered, you get the same service.

The service was impeccable and the food was really delicious, the desserts are a must too, the ambience of the place cannot be faulted and I have been back twice now

It's a 4* hotel so you'd expect the food and service to be top - which it is. Spent two weeks here and every meal has been great. Friendly staff in a pleasant atmosphere.

This place is well worth the visit. Lovely food. Waitresses were very attentive and food was served quick. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. A bit pricey for what I would spend on a meal but wouldn't rule it out on the price. Would recommend.

No nos trae diferentes cuando les experiencias pero claro que eran secos y negros así raro que pusieran ellos en un plato y servir a ellos en primer lugar!

He estado aquí en varias ocasiones para comida y bodas, es un lugar realmente encantador y la comida es de alto nivel. Las bebidas son bastante caro y creo que podría ser más barato pero siempre han sido caros y dout cambiará

Fuimos para nuestro aniversario. La comida era adorable. Excelente servicio. No es barato pero era para una ocasión especial. Había una gran boda en la sala de actos, pero claro que tenían contratado el personal suficiente para enfrentar, ya que teníamos la completa atención del personal que trabaja en el asador.

If you are in NE you should consider dining at this very pleasant restaurant in Boddam,6 of us lunched prior to visiting old Peterhead prison museum,food was excellent staff first class well worth the sat nav.

We had a family meal here today for New Year's Day. The food , which was a set 3 course menu was very good and the portion size above average. The choice of food was good and everyone commented on the great quality and wonderful taste of the food we were served. We had a very young baby and small child in our party and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We had a drink in the bar prior to the meal and the cost was very reasonable and again the service from staff was good. We will definitely return in the future.

A lovely afternoon tea with family. Plenty to choose from sandwich wise and the cakes and scones were delicious. Would highly recommend. Will definitely pop back here on our next visit to the area.

The Grill Room at Buchan Braes Hotel is quite high class--table setting, service, food. But the atmosphere is rather sterile with the restaurant not being completely separated from the lobby or bar. It is a good choice for dinner in the area, but never quite lives up to its potential or price.

We've now visited here for Dinner on three occasions & have to say having been to a few good restaurants in the major top cities This restaurant is up there with the best Can't fault anything & love the lovely lounge you can sit in before & after your meal with drinks They do the best French Martini in the area !

Stopped by here for lunch with my mum today, and enjoyed the lovely Cornflake Chicken dish. The service was faultless and the food was fantastic and worth every penny! Would definetely recommend coming here for a spot of lunch.

We went for dinner this evening and the food was beautiful. There was a fairly concise menu with only around five choices of starters, mains and desserts but they all sounded like very well thought out dishes. The food was, as usual, of a very high standard as was the service. The only slight criticism I have is the lighting. There are three (I think) very large and beautiful chandelier in the restaurant which provide a little too much light for such an intimate dinner. This is only a personal opinion as my partner feels the lighting is good.

We visited this restaurant in July for dinner and were really impressed with the quality interior as well as the quality of food and service.Had Cullen Skink to start which was top notch and for mains we all had steaks which were perfectly cooked and presented. The BB Trio sweet was sublime, altogether an excellent dining experience. The waiting staff were really attentive and wore white gloves during service which is something I have not seen for a long time. The Chefs cooking station was visible from the dining room so it was interesting to watch him at work. Well done to the team at The Buchan Braes.

Was my mother in laws 80th birthday so we thought we would book an afternoon tea for her. To be honest, it was very disappointing! The sandwiches were presented to us and they were good. We had 1 cup of tea/coffee while having sandwiches. The sandwiches were then taken away although there were still at least 8 left on each tray. Personally I think the sandwiches should have bn left.

My daughter and I are here on holiday from Australia. We took my sister and brother in law (widower of my older sister) there for lunch on Wednesday and it' s the best meal we have had out in the six weeks we have been here.The main courses were excellent, in presentation and taste. We don't usually have desserts, but couldn't resist and all had what I think was called the Buchanan Braes Trio. The staff were very busy, but smiled through it all and the service was outstanding. Even the bill didn't disappoint. Excellent all round.

The meal was excellent as was the service.The restaurant is set in a quiet area of Boddam near Peterhead.

this restaurant , within the hotel, is worthy of praise.The steak was cooked perfectly and the staff were absolutely brilliant , with nothing being too much trouble.will stay and eat here again.

Had the breast of duck with dauphinoise potatoes....small amount of potato and red cabbage so I had a side order of roast veg. Everything was very nice and the duck especially so. Complimentary sorbet was served after the starter I never had, but delicious. I had ice cream as dessert...very nice ice cream.Attention to detail by staff with everything served in white cotton gloves...nice touchA little pricey but it is a four star hotel restaurant.

The restaurant is far the best in Peterhead area as there is no real opposition. The food is always prepared fresh and the chefs plate up on open kitchen where you can watch their skills in cooking and preparing your very own meal.Now on to the food the menu is not extensive, which is always a good indicator of freshly prepared food and good quality. we have visited this restaurant on numerous occasions and always enjoyed fresh produce especially the fresh haddock and fillet of beef is sourced locally.Give it a go you will not be disappointed

Having been regular lunch time diners for years on this occasion we were very disappointed with the portion size of our fish and chips which was half the usual size. It was what in Aberdeen is served as a half portion. Hopefully this was a one off, we really enjoy our visits as the staff are brilliant.

Unplanned birthday lunch out - phonecall before hand- "of course we'll get a table for you".Spotlessly clean and properly set table; staff attentive, friendly not over familiar.Three local fish dishes, all different but equally superb! Easily self persuaded to have pudding... Looked almost too good to eat, but every scrap demolished!Can't fault on presentation or flavour- don't always get both. Very picky eaters with catering background- not easily impressed but can't fault. Great brightening of a grey Saturday! Thank you - we will be back.

We arrived at Buchan Braes at 12.50pm for one of our regular business lunches at the hotel. When we arrived we took a table in the bar area as usual. We were not acknowledged by any staff member for some time then we're offered two menus between five people. A member of staff put more menus back on the bar. We waited but ended up having to take menus from the bar ourselves. When it came time to order we asked the server if we could have chips instead of potatoes with some of our mains but were told this may not be possible because the chef may be busy (4-5 tables dining in the bar??) Our starters arrived without issue and were delicious but after finishing those we sat for 10 minutes with our dirty plates in front of us.When our main courses arrived the order was one main course short, surely alarm bells should have rang in the kitchen when they sent 5 starters but only 4 mains??. 3 of us had ordered mince with chips and stuffing, the perfect tonic for a cold winters day but what arrived was a total insult to traditional Scottish cuisine. The mince was of poor quality, cold, without seasoning or gravy and accompanied by a cloying, fat dripping misrepresentation of stuffing, completetely inedible.We told the server that we were sending them back and that we did not want the missing maincourse as it was also the mince dish.The three plates were taken away leaving one of our associates eating alone. Surely her food should have been taken away until the rest of the food was ready, or at least been offered this option.We reordered and when the mains arrived AGAIN they were a main course short and to add insult to injury it was the same persons food who had been missed in the first instance....unbelievable!!! The server/Manager said she was totally confused!!!This was now an hour and 30 mins from arriving at the hotel so we decided that we couldn't wait any longer and had to return to work. We did not have to pay but that was a small consolation considering the service we received thankfully it wasn't an occasion when we were taking an important client to LunchWe contacted the Hotel in order to highlight the afore mentioned issues. We received patronising email which made paltry excuses and vaguely skirted round the problems we had experienced.This is not the first time we have had to send substandard food back to the kitchen but alas will be our last............

Very good sandwiches, but why do you need to choose a filling for each guest? Much nicer to have a selection to share! Warm scones with clotted cream, jam and fresh strawberries were very tasty. The cakes were pretty and delicious. Staff were perfunctory .....why are they not trained to smile and make a bit of conversation to personalise the place? Good value though!

Took my wife here for her birthday and midweek the restaurant was very busy. The staff were very attentive and ensured our visit was memorable.The food was excellent and despite horror stories abounding about their pricing, I actually found it very reasonable considering the quality and service. We will definitely visit again.

Love the Buchan braes. Fantastic family lunch here today. Beautiful food and friendly service - a real delight to visit. My sister got married here recently and we will never forget the flawless service. Staff are amazing and can't do enough to make you feel welcome ! This is what hospitality is about.

Just been to the Buchanan Braes , again, for dinner. The food , as usual, was amazing. Scallops and duck were our starters, followed by rack of lamb for him and chicken for me. FLAVOUR.......The toffee cheesecake was heaven. Well done chefs. Attentive staff always on hand and very efficient. Roll on our next visit.

Have just eaten at Buchan Braes and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff were young and friendly and polite. We were shown to our table after after placing our order,with the food arriving a few minutes later. The lounge menu was varied. Food was tasty and good value for money. Hotel clean,but being situated in an old RAF base,some of the surrounding buildings need a tidy up. Good food, good staff, nice experience. Will visit again.

Hotel situated in middle of housing estate - derelict building nearby. Not happy at leaving car in car park short distance away with no gates. Staff however friendly and efficient. Had meal in bar and pleasantly surprised by quality - well presented, hot and well cooked. Room ok but gold velvety furniture a turn off.

We went there last night for a birthday dinner, won't be going back ant time soon. They managed to get my steak about right but my 'homemade' chips were not cooked properly and my husband's rack of lamb (the smallest I have ever seen) had to be sent back so they could have another go at it. My steak was accompanied by one mushroom and a tiny bowl of uninspired salad, the lamb was propped up by 4 sprouts, a spoonful of random veg and a little square of dauphinoise pots. Given that this place is the most expensive restaurant in town we expected better, or at the very least a bit more on the plates.Also (not really the hotel's fault) 4 bored kids were running around playing chase. Didn't help the ambience. 4 star gaff, tries hard to be posh, some way to go....

On a recent visit to this restaurant we first of all looked at the menu and noticed the prices were equal to a high class fine dining restaurants in other parts of the country,so we looked forward to a great meal NOT the case ,my starter of slow cooked belly pork was as close to a lump of uncooked fat as you will ever get,i sent it back only to be told by the chef what does he expect its slow cooked ,i changed it for scallops which were cooked from frozen not good,apart from the chef staff were very good ,i wont go into the rest of the meal as i think enough has been said ,wont be back i hope

Great atmosphere great meal well worth the price.We have been there 5 or 6 times now and we have enjoyed every time.They coped with a large function and all the dining room bookings very well.The service was excellent and they made it a real good Hogmanay

I have been few times there as a hotel guest and for business meals. Surely it is one of the best options for food locally.The lounge menù is very good and the buttered fish is to be tryied. Also the burger was pretty good.The grill lounge is of top quality. There is a lot of effeort also on the plates presentation.To be tried

I was invited to join some family members for a bar supper at Buchan Braes Hotel. The lounge bar is right inside the front doors to the hotel and was very cold the whole time we were there. One of the party felt so cold that he ate his meal with his jacket on. We enjoyed what we ate but all thought the portions were scant. There was 4 choices of dessert but none of us fancied any of the items so we left and went elsewhere for ice creams. I ordered a cranberry juice and it came in a tall glass but was less than half full. I did not pay for the meal or drinks so dont know how much they charged for this but when I have ordered a cranberry in other restaurants I have always received a full glass. Dont think I will be hurrying back.

Had a fantastic high tea here on Sunday night. Very attentive waiting staff, some waitresses had white gloves on, we had our napkin placed onto our laps and our tea/coffee poured for us. Lovely cream and jam on table for use with our scones. Our drinks were carried over to our table. If I had to be critical it would be that I would have liked more veg - I tend to find hotels nowadays very skimpy on veg, but I do like a lot of veg on my plate anyway, menu choice was adequate but far from vast. Also building on the outside isn't very appealing and plain but then it has been built to fit in with the other buildings around. Looking forward to having the opportunity for a return visit for high tea again in the future some time.

Met up with some resident friends for a meal. Starter prawn marie rose was ok but tiny. The lamb tikka curry was certainly chewy along with what I think was pilau rice which was solidified! Sorry but you only get the one chance with me. ps: barman was excellent, restof waiting staff very dour.

So looking forward to our High Tea,menu read Gammon Salad and New Potatoes, no new potatoes,salad had no toms,no coleslaw,no cheese,no hard boiled eggs,cakes after 4 very small cakes,one had butter cream in middle which was rock hard.Scone was warmed without being asked.We were asked if we wanted a voucher for a return visit we said no chance,we got a reduction in the bill which we felt did not compensate for the disappointment of the meal,we will not return to this hotel.Please think long and hard before you visit here for a High Tea.

Having driven through Boddam on numerous occasions this was the first time that I had ventured into the village. I am glad that we did, the Buchan Braes Hotel was not what I had imagined, it turned out to be a very chic, modern Hotel with a very nice lounge and and open plan restaurant. We decided to eat in the lounge rather than the grill room, the service was excellent, the steaks and especially the chips were of a very high standard. As someone who eats out on a regular basis this was a great choice, a hidden gem with numerous items on the menu I would have liked to sample. The ambiance was great, the restaurant and the hotel were very busy, a good sign. We will definitely return, the next time we will think of staying over to enjoy more of the good food and what seemed like very high standards.

Visited here with friends, got the choice of dining in the lounge or grill room, but opted for the latter as we were already sitting comfortably there. Service was rather on the slow side, only 2 waiting staff there, it took 10minutes before we were shown a menu or offered a drink but that was the only negative issue. Not very impressive from the outside but lovely, contemporary interior. There is a 2 course lunch option for a very reasonable £12.95 but we didn't select from there. We enjoyed the braes burgers and cajun chicken burger, both delicious, not greasy and chips were fab. We all had honeycomb pavlova with cinder toffee which came adorned with seasonal berries and passionfruit.The food was faultless, well presented and reasonably priced for the quality. We are now tempted by the grill room dinner menu!

Very mixed experience - some of my food was lovely (good haddock and haggis, well chosen house red), some OK and some awful (soggy chips and one of the worst cups of coffee I've been served in a long time). It just wasn't worth what I paid - just under £30 for 2 courses, small glass of house wine and a coffee. I expect a bit more for that price.

We visited during the change of menus and were informed that our choice would be limited. We never noticed!Good food well cooked. Ambience a bit impersonal.

Been to the restaurant a few times now for lunch & evening meals & highly recommend it to everyone! There is always a great choice on the menu & the staff are very polite & helpful. I also like the fact that you can see the chef etc.. working away in the back ground cooking your meal. We are getting married in the hotel next June & can't wait to pick our menu & be looked after during our day.

We have had dinner and also stayed over at the Buchan Braes and always enjoyed it. I took a friend for lunch there today. They have A La Carte and also a set menu of two courses, which is a very reasonable £12.00. We chose from the set menu and where very impressed at the food on offer. We where giving a choice of breads to start which are beautiful and then after our meal we had coffee and shortbreads. I could throughly recommend this Hotel and if you are looking for lunch I would say it's the best place to have it in the area.

We have been there quite a lot for Sunday lunch and everything is excellent. I don't like seafood myself but our guests said the fish was beautiful. The soups are always different but gorgeous and the bread is all made in house M mmmmm Excellent service with lovely staff !!! Douglas Claire Marius and Marissa etc go beyond the call of duty - they are so kind to our grand children and call them by name. Afternoon tea 's are yummy - lovely hotel and excellent staff !!

We went with relatives for lunch in March, the menu was extensive and it took some time to decide, in the end I ordered the battered fish, the flakes of white fish just fell apart, it was cooked to perfection, so compliments to the chef, it was so fresh that I swear they have their own private fisherman sat just outside and that he catches to order !!We will definitely return.

Went for afternoon tea with colleages, had two platters of mixed sandwiches although you can specify what you like, came with crisp and salad, tea was served in individual pots with loose tea rather than bags, onlt thing missing was a pot of boiling water as tea was quite strong for my taste. After the sanwiches the waitres came out with hot scones, good point was that they hadn;t just been heated in the micro, along with the scones cam three dish with fresh strawberries, jam and cream, which was good as you could make your scone exactly how you like. Not only were their scones, but a great selection of fancy pieces, (tray bakes, biscuits, cakes).We were a group of nine people so had a good selection of sandwiches and cakes.the only would be not to sit beside the door, as when it opens and closes there can be quite a draft. when we booked it i did think the £11 was quite dear for afternoon tea. But i would definately go back for a treat again.

We have been to the Buchan Braes for Dinner on a number of occasions and I cannot recommend it more highly. It is the best restaurant in the area. Lovely food, regular menu changes, great imaginative used of ingredients using locally sourced Scottish fayre, with beautiful presentation.Staff are very attentive, courteous and efficient. We love the mouth watering home made bread which cannot be resisted. There is always an extra course of a fruit sorbet during the meal and the after meal coffee is accompanied by chocolates. This is not a budget restaurant, but it is a little luxury we always look forward to.
