Browns fish and chips in Chorley

Whenever I’m in Chorley . Browns is always a must have!!!!

First time at this chippy.. The staff are lovely and very friendly. Sadly that's where the good news ends... Purchased plaice and chips, just over £7 with the seafood basket at £5.80. Very quickly on getting home I found the plaice to be quite heavily battered and just didn't have that distinctive taste that you get from plaice - which for those who like it, that's why you buy it..! The size was impressive.. but the taste wasn't.. I'd probably give it 3 or 4/10. You need to look at your supplier and how you're storing the fish.. age and storage process to ensure keeping the flavour. But also look at how you cook it.. The classic style of cooking plaice is to breadcrumb it.. But if that isn't possible, then you need to look at your battering process.. You only need a very light batter on plaice, or else the flavour of the batter itself will inhibit the flavour of the fish. The chips.. absolutely bloody awful..! Tasted like cardboard and I even think probably made the fish taste a bit like cardboard as well when I put it on the plate! They need to try to source out Maris Piper potatoes instead.. They taste SO much better, and are worth any increase in price. These chips were completely tasteless like cardboard... You could even smell the cardboard before you tasted them!! The seafood basket was £5.80 and I know seafood is expensive.. But I couldn't help but feel that for nine small very heavily battered pieces £5.80 was quite a lot. Overall I'm afraid I would have to probably score this experience as 3/10... It's lovely that they are friendly and welcoming.. But they really need to look at the food.. It's just flavorless. Sorry guys.. more effort required 👍

Always a good meal. We usually buy cod, chips and curry sauce and head to Astley Park.

Just got takeaway fish and chips for two It was absolutely delicious best I've had on a long time would recommend and will go back soon. It was recommended by a friend and I was glad it was as it was superb

Best fish and chips in town , peas green like they should be , always hot , tried others in town and can’t beat this chippy , always wrap in paper like they should be not in containers, won’t go anywhere else.

Brown's Fish & Chip Shop. Wendnesday Aug 07/082024 At aprox 1-00pm. Small fish, had to ask the man three times as he wanted to sell me a large fish, small chips and a small carton of peas. Cheap at about £4-60. The fish must have been standing for a long time. Thick batter, so hard it was almost bullet proof, the fish inside was very dry and very small. Also it was about 60 percent inedible batter. Chips also left standing and they were awful. The mushy peas were very good. Generally the shop looks grubby. I will be going back to the Queen Vick. More exspensiv but the food is edible.

Last two visits recently, it has gone way down hill. Awful dry chips, never fresh and full of eyes. Smallest "large fish" @ £5.50 I've ever seen. Will be avoiding in future. And still cash only?

Called in at lunch for fish and peas... decided to have a haddock OMG when I saw the size of it all I could think of was the quote from Jaws, "we're going to need a bigger boat". And the taste was amazing. Very, VERY recommended. Thank you

Unquestionably one of the least hygienic Chip Shops in the entire town. The last THREE times we've had food poisoning from the fish and undercooked sausage. You may ask "why did you come again if you got sick?" well, benefit of the doubt and all that. Might have just been a one-off and this place USED to be one of the very best. However, the last time (just after 8pm on the 30th of May 2024) the fish smelled off right from the go and -once again- made my mum incredibly sick. Whoever runs this place nowadays should be absolutely ashamed. Will NEVER return to this place. You had two chances to clean up your act (benefit of the doubt) but that was the last time. Disgusting. Go elsewhere if you value your health.

Amazing chippy one of the best around and a lovely owner too.

What a shame this chippy is not good anymore the Queen Victoria on Carr Lane Chorley is so much better massive portions and much cheaper come on Brown's what are you doing small fish and chips very small portions less than child size and your chips are always dried up large chips £5 no no you will price yourself out of the market never a queue anymore not surprised!!!!!

Chips are so inconsistent nowadays it's getting close to the last visit which is sad because we've been going here once a week for probably 15 years. Sometimes there's skin on the chips and sometimes there's not. Chippy chips shouldn't have skin on and I can understand if the customers are asking for it but their not.. it has always been easily the best and busiest chippy why change a winning recipe? Prices are crazy, £5 for a large chips.. its justifiable if its amazing but at the minute it's not 😶.

Average food the potato scallops went back as weren't very nice but the owner swapped them for something else

Serious drop in quality since my last visit. A large Chips was £5; I threw half of them away as they were really soggy and the paper stuck to all the chips. I was picking bits of paper from my teeth all evening. Curry, gravy and peas all tasted bland. Loads of good chippies in Chorley to choose from, I won't be making Brown's my regular.

Been using here for a long time but I think it’s time for change . From cold beans over a warm steak pudding to lukewarm warm gravy over cold old shrivelled up bitty chips this really was a bad visit . Not to mention the chaotic service and lengthy waiting time . Needs to buck up .

This chippy is worth the drive to Chorley town centre. Chips are cooked well done, unlike many other pale pasty looking chip shop's fare. Fish cooked to perfection and always prompt, and polite service. Giorgio the owner obviously takes pride in his excellent customer service and it makes for a pleasant experience. Just be mindful of the "Cash Only" policy and closing times - generally 10pm. I heartily recommend this business and have No affiliation apart from being a satified customer. Tom Ashworth.

used to be good as used to come here all the time. Been going to leyland chippy but decided to try chorley. Just had it and sadly disappointed as the chips were too tough to eat the fish they fried fresh. Guess my experience isn’t great when I turn up and it’s cash only and then I went to cash machine then come back to get it and it was still disappointed. Overall, service is good at least.

Owner very friendly but the food and service is poor. The young lad made a complete mess of the gravy, getting it everywhere, didn't bother to wipe it down before bagging. Forgot the curry sauce until I reminded him, then when he handed it to me, I asked if he had remembered the barm, he said yes, but once we got home, no barm cake!! He also needs a lesson about bagging up properly so gravy doesn't spill everywhere. Chips were horrid and prices extortionate.

Rarely write a review, however Food 5/5 if your looking for a local chippy, could not recommend more. Girl on the F.O.H acting like I laid one out on the counter

I took my fish and chips to the car nearby. Luckily there was a lovely black cat that sensed the food. I shared half the fish with it and threw the chips away because they were just warm. Fish was wet inside. For another £2 - I could have sat down in Charlies Chips and have mushy peas, bread and butter, tea or coffee but I thought I would give Browns a whirl. They should change the name of this chippy as I'm sure the present occupiers are degrading the past reputation.

I had not been to this chippy for 15 mins and I was doing security last week in chorfest at Astley Park I paid them a few visits the staff are friendly and the food is delicious and not to steeply priced

I thought i would give the place another try because i hadn't been for a while, I went in at lunch time a week or so ago, ordered steak pudding, chips and curry, plus a can of pop, he charged me £6.20, shocking, and the guy had put gravy on by mistake, I won't be going back

This place is going down hill like many other through greed. No large chip portions anymore. Regular chip portions are more like childs portions. The new large size grave/curry sauces are now regular sizes and yet all the prices are still the same. If you want to be ripped off then this place is for you.

I'm sorry to say this but I was disappointed in browns chippy. Ive not been for years and went recently for a chippy tea. No large portions of chips and cash only. Only just had enough money on me to pay. Was once voted the best chippy in chorley. Hope this place gets its reputation back.

Browns chippy is not only the best food around but the freindliest place to visit. Been a few times now as was recommended by a biker friend,and seeing as we live in both Bolton and Wigan the distance to travel for our lunchtime special is well worth it. Small Fish n Chips and a soft drink for under a fiver 👍👍👍.Absolutely delicious,with the nicest crunchy batter ever. Also the added bonus of a seating area adjacent,so you can keep an eye on your bike while you eat. Must state again the friendly welcome and fast service,all in all the best chippy for miles around . Always friendly service & nice fish & chips. Although there seems to be a shortage of potatoes at the moment. There are no large portions of chips available & the potatoes are not of the usual quality, a bit gritty.

Well...the fact tht we travel from Wigan to this chippy should say it all...we won't go anywhere else for fish especially because I'm very fussy about hygiene standards where fish and poultry is...try this chippy..you will be happy 😊

Fantastic little chippy. I drive 15 mins to go here as it’s miles better than any local to me and good value also. The staff are friendly and very welcoming.

I wish I could give 6 stars the large haddock and chips....seriously it was the biggest I've had anywhere. And done perfectly with good crispy batter and the chips were great too.

This is one of our favourite chippy shops. It is in Chorley. You get your chips in newspapers wrap. Chips is very nice and in big quantity.

Mr regular Chippy. Consistent and reasonably priced. Can get busy at peak times, but worth the wait. Lunchtime specials are a great option and good value.

This is by far and away the very best fish and chips I've had for a long time. I googled fish and chips on my way home from Southport and by chance picked this one, I certainly dont regret it. Excellent value, well cooked....its a shame I would have to travel for 90 minutes to come here regularly. Will certainly call when I'm next in the area

I've been here many times in the past. I know fish is expensive, but I was disappointed with the size when we arrived home this time and opened the package. It was tiny - 3.5" X 1.5" approx. Not particularly good quality too. Chips were alright. Perhaps times are so tough, this is what to expect with takeaway food. I will think twice in future.

Not the best chips, the fish was better than average. The peas were good and the service was good. I hope the chips will improve when the potatoes get more mature.

This is by far the best chippie in the area but they did get my order wrong.

No were near as good as it used to be the meat and potato pies seems to have shrunk by 75%. The portions have also shrunk. Not good value for money better chippies around

We visited the chippy last Wednesday 27th. Myself and hubby both had steak pudding chips & gravy. The meal was excellent lovely fresh chips and tasty gravy just the right thickness. Lovely hot meaty pudding too. Can't wait to visit again. Not too expensive either.

Browns used to be the best fish & chips in the area - sadly this is no longer the case BY A LONG WAY! The fish is now completl;y overcooked and the chips are truly revolting - nothing like the 'chippy chips' you'd expect. Tried the place a few times lately, just in case they were just having an off day, but really bad every time. We'll not be visiting again until it's under new management or somebody I know personally has had an edible meal from here.

battered sausage was well overdone,chips were hard,I used to love this chippy but feel like I've just been ripped off 11 quid,fish isn't cod it's cheap white fish,seagulls told me to avoid on way there should of listened to them!!!
