Browns Bar & Brasserie in Edinburgh, City of

This was my first meal out for 15 months and what a disappointment. Firstly the non-alcoholic drinks a swizz. Raspberry Soda, more ice with some flavour. The food is amateur and ridiculously priced. Service was slow and sadly lacking in the realities of COVID. A shame, as I was looking forward to food I had not cooked.

Had an amazing breakfast. Food was delicious. would definitely recommend! The service was great and they couldn’t do enough for you.

Booked ahead for Sunday lunch at 12. Were seated out back in the booth area. Sadly the seats were not clean: stained and covered in bits. Was pretty off putting considering they had just opened. Pointed it out to the staff. Not sure if they were that concerned. Given the importance of cleaning everything in the times we are in, I would avoid this place - plenty other restaurants and brasseries on George Street that take better care of hygiene...

I took my two best friends here today for a festive lunch.My gift to them as this year has been terrible and I thought better to spend time with those you love than buy things.I phoned the day before to make sure all would be perfect when we came and it was.I received a lovely warm welcome by the man on the front desk.We were seated in a nice booth.The decorations are so pretty and it has a really delightful atmosphere to dine in.Our waitress,now I think her name was Marie but I'm not sure.She was so lovely and friendly.We got our menus and our drinks which were mocktails and really very tasty.Our starters were,prawn cocktails and a shallot tartin.Both were very well presented and delicious. Mains were of course turkey with all the trimmings.Again,absolutely wonderful. The meat is so tender and not too much of it.The roasties were superb as was the cabbage.Dessert time!I had the chocolate torte whereas my friends had the profiteroles and the xmas pudding. We all absolutely loved them.None were too heavy.The torte was a bit sweet and too much for me but I don't have a sweet tooth.I still enjoyed it.We finished off with coffees.It was an absolute pleasure to dine here as it always is.I love Browns.I just wish I could come here more often.The most wonderful time of year it is,especially when you have amazing friends like mine and we can enjoy a gorgeous lunch here.We all thank you for today.You made us all feel so welcome and wish you a very merry Christmas.

Our family lunch was completely spoiled by what we regarded as a lack of proper social distancing measures and the rude aggressive attitude of the manager. We were seated at a booth and had ordered our meals when a couple were shown to the booth immediately behind us. As a result my wife’s and son’s heads were inches from the adjacent group. When we politely asked the waiter if this was correct the manager appeared and told us that such back to back seating was allowed by the regulations. I said that whatever the regulations might allow, we were not comfortable and that it didn’t strike us that much of an effort was being made to socially distance customers. For example, there were no Perspex screens between the booths. The manager took offence at this and became aggressive and accused us of being rude. He said if we weren’t happy then to go elsewhere! We refused to be bullied by him and were moved to another table. But the lunch was well and truly spoiled by then.

Había un gran ambiente aquí, mientras que se implementaron excelentes medidas de COVID. El servicio fue de muy alto nivel y muy eficiente. Nuestro camarero Paul fue estupendo y nada fue una molestia para él. Gracias de nuevo Paul. Recomiendo encarecidamente una visita aquí y con suerte volveremos pronto!

Pedí pastel de pescado, lleno de pescado pero servido en un plato de hierro fundido, estaba tan caliente que no pude comer esto incluso cuando todos los demás terminaron la comida, el servicio no fue excelente, tuve que esperar que las mesas estuvieran despejadas y también tuve que la atención del personal constantemente para conseguir un trago más. Mi pastel de pescado parecía que había estado sentado bajo lámparas de calefacción durante algún tiempo y la cuenta llegó a 83. 00 para dos personas, noté después de pagar que habían puesto 7. 15 servir cargo en la factura. No me di cuenta en ese momento. Nunca hubiera pagado esto porque el servicio no fue excelente.

Solo vine aquí porque tenía un cupón de descuento del 50%. No había estado en un Browns durante años y tenía recuerdos felices. Este es un bar de tamaño encantador y parecía tener un gran ambiente en el bar principal. Es por eso que nosotros (4 de nosotros) decidimos tomar algo después de la cena allí. Había 2 mesas libres en la ventana, así que fui a sentarme. Inmediatamente le dijeron a mi esposo que no podíamos sentarnos allí porque estaban reservados.No había ninguna señal reservada.Nos acompañaron a la parte trasera del restaurante donde todo estaba en silencio, lo cual no era lo que queríamos. No tenía una máscara, pero tenía mi cordón de girasol alrededor de mi cuello (por discapacidad oculta), procedió a pedirme que me pusiera una máscara. Le mostré mi cordón y él se encogió de hombros y dijo que no sabía qué era eso. Capacite a su personal para que conozca la ley de discapacidad.Nos marchamos muy pronto después de eso y poco después, mientras salíamos, las dos mesas delanteras estaban llenas de chicas jóvenes.Obviamente, no teníamos la edad adecuada para estar sentados en la ventana delantera.La pérdida de barras. Regresamos a nuestro hotel y pedimos una botella de champán.

Disfrutamos de la cena en Brown's el domingo por la noche. El solomillo estaba preparado a mi gusto y los aros de cebolla eran excelentes. El pudín de caramelo pegajoso también era muy bueno. No estaba muy ocupado y todos los comensales estaban sentados en la misma área del restaurante, supongo que debido al personal limitado.

Acabo de regresar de un delicioso almuerzo en Brown's. La comida y el servicio fueron excelentes. Sin embargo, en el área de la cabina en la que estábamos sentados, estaba bastante concurrida con otros comensales a menos de un metro de distancia y de lo que pudimos ver, muy pocas otras medidas de seguridad implementadas (por ejemplo, no hay desinfectante de manos disponible, no hay un sistema lugar y sin pantallas, etc.). Felizmente nos hubiéramos quedado mucho más tiempo, pero decidimos irnos bastante pronto después de la comida porque nos sentimos un poco incómodos. En el entorno actual, lamentablemente, no regresaríamos basándonos en lo anterior.

Simplemente entramos cuando pasábamos sin saber a dónde ir. Nos cuidaron muy bien y la comida era muy buena. Se las arregló para obtener un 50% de descuento en la red eléctrica a través de su aplicación, lo cual fue bueno.El restaurante carecía de un poco de atmósfera, aunque probablemente las reglas de COVID no ayudaron sin música de fondo.Definitivamente lo recomiendo. Especialmente el entrante Camembert.

Los postres, brownie y profiteroles, estaban deliciosos. También me dieron un par de tragos y me impresionó mucho el mohito virgen, ya que sabía increíble.

El miércoles es mi 50º y no estaba seguro de dónde comeríamos, pero sé adónde iremos ahora. Recomiendo encarecidamente este restaurante.

El lugar en sí es agradable, pero podrías hacerlo mucho mejor en Edimburgo. Al entrar en el restaurante huele mal a pescado.En general, no lo recomendaría para el té de la tarde.

Goede prijs kwaliteit verhouding en de lekkerste scones en victoria spongecake die ik ooit heb geproefd. Na de afternoon tea, nog een Gin Tonic geproefd, die hebben ze hier in alle soorten en smaken!

Visité ayer para tomar un café y un bollo. No hacen bollos aparte de los tés de la tarde, pero el chef envió 4 pequeños porque eso era lo que quería. Muchos cafés, etc. están cerrados en este momento y realmente aprecio el esfuerzo. Los bollos estaban deliciosos. Regresé hoy para cenar, que fue totalmente delicioso. Following 4 months stuck working from home I was extremely pleased when my parents offered to have the kids to give us a break. After staying in Edinburgh we decided to have some lunch before heading home. We popped into Browns and were not disappointed. Manager took our contact details and then found us a table. Staff were wearing PPE and we were given menus printed on paper. We both had Sunday roast beef and it was perfectly cooked medium and served with lovely fresh vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. Staff were friendly and felt confident they were taking appropriate precautions re Covid-19. Very good lunch.

Excellent costumer service from Yilmaz. Was very impressed. He catered to our every need and was very friendly and chatty!

Nous avions réservé un soir de match écosse France pour être certains d'avoir une table, nous avons trouvé un bel endroit, assez vide et sans ambiance. Les assiettes sont copieuses, pas très fines, le personnel est bof... le vin quelconque même si au pays de la bière et du single malt ce n'est pas forcément ce que l'on vient chercher. Finalement on aurait dû aller jouer des coudes dans un bon pub !

Cena con la familia. Me gustaría decir que este es un hermoso restaurante. El servicio que recibimos de Ursula también fue excelente, pero la razón por la que solo obtuvo 4 de 5 fue porque, aunque mi bistec estaba muy bueno, me decepcionó que solo viniera con papas fritas y nada más

Las críticas de este restaurante son menos que justas. . . Es maravilloso, delicioso, los precios, bastante, con un excelente servicio. . . ¡y no deliramos por viajar durante 20 horas! ! ¡Volveremos esta semana! !

Booked Brown’s for brunch on our final day in Edinburgh. Sadly was not up to the standards of the last time we visited. The food was lukewarm, the plates felt cold and even the pot of tea was warm. I would not rush back.

Venus mardi à 21h15, très bien accueillis, bon repas, personnel au top. On prend plat et dessert, accompagné d'une bonne bouteille de vin. On ne nous presse pas, très cool. Tellement sympa que le lendemain nous décidons d'y revenir. Il est 20h50. Et là, ô surprise, ns sommes accueillis par une autre personne qui nous refuse l'entrée : les cuisines sont fermées ! Il n'est pas 21h, il y a encore des gens !!! C'est quoi cette manière de faire ? Très déçu. C'est pas grave, on a été super bien accueilli ailleurs, sans nous presser, avec le sourire jusqu'au bout.Nous ne retenterons plus.

A poor experience from start to finish. Hung about at the door until finally someone came to seat us at a table. Ordered drinks and food, the starter, duck parfait came almost immediately which was served straight from the fridge and uninspiring (no sign of drinks), long delay for main course and had to ask again for our drinks, got drinks after 3rd request. Main course was woeful, steak plonked on top of chips so the blood ran into them (yuck) it was tough and tasteless, my husbands chicken pie was equally underwhelming.... looked like a ready meal. Sat for ages after our main course with no one clearing plates/offer of dessert/coffee etc, finally caught the waiters eye for the bill, paid and left....awful. Will not be back.

The food was fantastic, I had the steak from the special menu and it was just perfect. The downside to my meal was my drink. I ordered an Old Fashioned and it was not well made, first one tasted weak and the second one just tasted like water with a splash of whisky.

I have been for lunch here twice now and it has been very good. The venue is pleasant,open and the tables are not too close. Service is very professional. The lunch menu is very good value given its quality. I have had the beetroot cottage pie twice as it is delicious but the starters were great too. I recommend this venue.

There where 4 of us and we had really nice food and the service was great. We had a really nice night out with good atmosphere. Will defiantly go there again.

Food ok, service a bit slow, we were a large group but didn’t seem to be able to cope! Took half our parties orders then left, had to ask for rest of us to order.

I visited recently with a friend for lunch, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The decor and ambience is lovely, and the lunch and main menus provide a nice variety. We opted for the set lunch which, is extremely good value for city centre fare. Service was relaxed and friendly, and the food was tasty, high quality and with lovely presentation. We hung around for a couple of coffees and enjoyed the afternoon there too (we don't normally have afternoons off - haha!). Highly recommend it and will definitely be back soon.

Visited this Restuarant on several occasions but this time we were left extremely dismayed with the overall experience. Lighting too low to read the menu we needed flash light on mobile as did a few other tables it was too low that you couldn’t see what you were eating. My wife was seated next to waiters travel and was constantly knocked by waiters passing only one stopped to apologise. Food was not as good a standard as usual and service charge added plus waitress asked if we wanted to leave a tip Will not be back in a hurry based on this visit

We were a party of 12 and had booked the restaurant as some of the party had said it was good with lots of options for vegans. Firstly the service was very slow. Next when the starters arrived 2 of them were the wrong food, the goats cheese, beetroot and walnut salad had no beetroot!! Apparently they had a new chef that didn’t realise beetroot was included!! There were 7 of us that had ordered this. The “salad” consisted of a small square of toasted bread with a minuscule piece of goats cheese on top, 3 walnuts and 3 halves of a cherry tomato all on a few leaves. For almost £7 this was atrocious! Next when the mains arrived a few of the meals were cold and the butternut squash risotto was dried up. The chicken Caesar salad had no chicken and this was brought as an afterthought!! All in all a very disappointing experience.

Was seated without a reservation, initially placed on a tiny table that was up against a wall and which would have meant either myself or my husband would have been sat in the main walkway. Asked to move and this was allowed, seated towards the back of the restaurant. Had to use light on phone as it was very dark in the restaurant. Food was ok, nothing special for the price we paid for pie and mash and a Sunday lunch. Think it’s rather cheeky to also add a service charge on the bill.

There was a party of 13 of us we walked in for lunch on 19th December 2019 the host was unsure if she had any tables but quickly found us once even though we haven’t booked and as i work in hospitality i know how hard this can be. The staff come over very quickly to take a drinks order followed by a food order. The food was great I got the three course festive menu witch was 34 pound if i recall. When i come to paying the staff quicky put my discount on the bill just watch out for the service charge witch is added on to your bill

Had dinner on Saturday 11 January just on 18:30. We did not have a reservation but were seated immediately by the hostess. The welcome was good but then the waiting started. Waited 20 minutes for a drinks order to be taken, i believe it would have been longer had I not called a server over and asked an order to be taken. We then waited another 15 minutes for the bottle of wine to be presented. Food order was taken soon after and appetizers arrived after only a brief wait. The food looked appetizing and tasted great. The main was also of high quality and tasty. The evening was slightly tainted by the long wait at the start but food was very good. I will return and encourage others to do so also.

Have loved this restaurant and been a regular for years however despite a recent makeover our experience today was very disappointing .

We booked a New Year’s Eve 5 course meal at Browns for a party of four and when we arrived we were seated very quickly and were happy with our table. The restaurant really is quite stunning!

We spent our boxing day lunch there. Although we were asked to pre-order nothing was ready on time. They even missed parts of our order. The service was very slow albeit the hostess was friendly and polite. Food was of medium quality

When I have a variety of people to consider, I always choose Browns. A good menu range to suit all. The inside of the one in Edinburgh is stunning and makes it feel like a special night out. It's a personal taste of mine but I feel drinks should be offered before chasing for the meal choice. However we ordered it all together as it took them a while to take our order. After that the service was very good. our waiter was very attentive.

This is the first time I've dined out on Christmas Day, it was a great experience.

Pre booked table for saturday evening. We were placed next to the serving table where cutlery was clanked about.

My husband and I met up at Brown's for lunch with friends who live abroad; we've been here a few times and it's been fine but today maybe suffering from a touch of Christmas fatigue?

We booked for what should have been a special evening for a birthday. We had to submit our menu choices (a somewhat very small menu with limited choice) in advance of our arrival along with a deposit. The decor would give grand impressions and hence expectations were high, thinking that a restaurant looking for choices for a table of 10 in advance should be able to perform to a high standard. Unfortunately we were incredibly disappointed, it took nearly 45 minutes for our first course to arrive, most of these were cold plates with only one soup being warm - soup. There must have been several mix ups as a couple of extra plates were brought out for food not ordered. Each course should a plethora of different waiting staff, most of whom were very clueless about dietary intolerances which was made clear at time of booking. We asked for our children’s mains to come our with the starters, unfortunately this did not happened despite the promises from waiting staff. Each course took some considerable time between and it was definitely not what I would call an efficient service. Our three courses took 2 hours 15 minutes. I’m so glad that we pre ordered.

A group of us 5 ladies arrived at Brownes restaurant for breakfast last weekend at 11am. We were shown to a table and asked to vacate it by 12.15pm. After about 15 minutes we were asked if we would like to order teas or coffees which we did. In the meantime we ordered breakfast. The 3 teas and 2 coffees eventually arrived after another 15 minutes and were cold. We complained and the waitress came back after some time to tell us that the coffee machine was overworked and couldn't cope with the number of customers (even though the restaurant was half empty). There were actually more staff than customers, all walking around. The waitress said

Booked afternoon tea with work colleagues ... seemed to wait an age to be taken to our table....told the servers 3 times we were booked for afternoon tea, despite being given all the menus!! finally was served tea and thereafter our afternoon teas, after what seemed a bit of an age......food is lovely but service is a bit lacking in service to the customer ( thats the paying one), as a result we didn't order drinks as would have been happy to stay, pity as food lovely and surroundings warn and Christmassey.....another venue gains

We hadn't booked, and when we arrived the restaurant was fairly busy, but the front of house managed to find us a table. Comprehensive menu from which I chose the salt beef hash and a blueberry, raspberry, banana & flax seed smoothie. My partner opted for the vegetarian breakfast. All delicious! Service was prompt and all of the staff we met were very friendly and efficient.

Average food. Brought wrong meal out. Didn’t have our first choice of food or beer. On the positive the bread was nice. Back to negative. Had 3 serving staff. First was good. 2nd made mistakes. 3rd questioned why I didn’t just pay the service charge! Browns should be embarrassed!

Came here with family and thoroughly enjoyed the visit! Food was great! I had the roast beef and it was delicious and perfectly cooked. The man who served us was very polite and friendly. Only downside was the restaurant was quite cold we were all sitting with our jackets on by the end! Will definitely return and hopefully it will be warmer!

The refurbishment is very nice, but disappointing reception. On arrival we noticed the entrance has changed so made our way up stairs and took a table. There was nobody at the desk in entrance, nor a sign asking guests to wait to be seated. After a while a harassed member of staff told a couple who had done as we had that they should have waited! We said there was nobody there and no sign. She gave us menus and then there appeared to be a rush and nobody to help so after waiting for a while we decided to give up, feeling a bit cross with reception and lack of clarity on part of management.

Did not enjoy the meal at all. Sat in a cold window with no heating. Service was very slow and felt like the prices were quite expensive for the quality of food we received.

We went in for brunch. Food is excellent. Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs were lovely. As was pancakes. Service was extreme slow and servers didn’t seem particularly happy. Would go back for food but there are better places to visit. Staff let’s this place down.

This is the 3rd time we have visited and by far the most disappointing, purely because of the painfully slow service. The restaurant was almost empty where we were seated and yet it took over 15 minutes for anyone to come and take our drinks order and then the same again to order food. The food did arrive promptly and was the usual excellent standard.

Five of us dined at Browns for my daughters 19th birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Decor, service, food and ambience could not be faulted. Everyone of us enjoyed what we ordered. Highlight for me was the butternut squash pie, see photo, which was so nice i recreated at home a few days later.

The decor is beautiful unfortunately the positive stops there! Cocktails ridiculous prices. Lunch well let’s just say pre prepared very very disappointed. Won’t be returning.

Just had lunch at Browns in Edinburgh. I have to say that I and my husband were utterly disappointed in the service received. Took 10mins to be seated in an empty restaurant. Ordered drinks and they did not arrive! An army of staff walking around and none of them asked how our food was or if we’d like anything else. A 10% service charge on out bill was an insult. I can safely say we will not be back again!

Walked in yesterday evening to eat dinner with my granddaughter. We stood waiting to be seated for several minutes, it wasn’t busy, we could see a waiter standing around but nobody came to seat us. A large group of people came in & eventually the greeter came to seat us. Having realised we weren’t with the large group he proceeded to sort out their reservation when we were first & he had spoken to us. Eventually we decided our custom wasn’t needed so we left and found a lovely restaurant which appreciated our custom.

We’ve been at Browns for the first time for a quick dinner. It was a very busy Friday but the atmosfere was lovely and relaxing. We’ve ordered two sirloin steaks with scallops, and we’ve been served quite quickly, but unfortunately the steaks were not on point, they were dry and over cooked. Our waiter it’s been great, he didn’t hesitated to replace the steaks with fresh ones. We got the new steaks and they were absolutely terrific, perfectly cooked and the scallops as well.

At stylish restaurant with great service in the centre of the city. From the initial meet and greet to the door on the way out I felt at home. Happy to make this a regular on my dining cycle especially for the Sticky Toffee Pudding which is genius and to die for. I’ll be back before you can say - Verdejo!

I loved this place. It’s really cosy inside. Good atmosphere. The menu is good, lots of chose. The staff is very friendly!!!

We were a table of 10 the Food was good except one stake which was poor. We should have returned it, but because the service was a bit slow so we did not bother. The afternoon was lovely relaxed afternoon thought.

On a very cold November night found this gem. Very nice atmosphere tasteful decor attentive staff and the food was very nice too at surprisingly sensible prices.

Fantastic food and service. We visited for my sisters 50th birthday. Slightly disappointed that we didn’t get a better table after booking around 3 weeks ahead and asking for a great table.

Lunch was beautiful. We hadn't booked but were seated without bother and the restaurant had a lovely busy but not chaotic atmosphere. Firstly I need to point out they're attention to sustaining their carbon footprint when sourcing their food. They fully utilize what is on our doorstep and if more businesses took this approach then the world would see a huge benefit! Thank you Browns!

I regularly use Browns to take important guests to dinner. Food is always of a high standard, well prepared and presented and good choice. Wine list is excellent. Staff are well trained and always polite.

Lovely affordable place to eat in Edinburgh. Good food, great staff and relaxing place to eat at this refurbished branch. Lovely decor and seating arrangements are spacious. Will definitely eat here again. Lot's of choice on the menu too.

We had our farewell dinner at Browns Brasserie at George Street. The atmosphere and ambience were great. The service staff were very attentive and pleasant. The set menu with choices were selected by the host. The staff added to the success of the farewell party.

We could not fault the food And the restaurant itself is very grand with superb decor, but we had a total of four different waiters, and the service was slow. We felt forgotten about despite a friendly welcome. In addition, all three of the Gents toilets were filthy dirty and when the bill came we had the discretionary service charge already added on (which I believe is wrong - this should be optional). In summary, great food but the service needs sharpening up and toilet cleanliness needs better monitoring.

My father, sister and I came here for dinner last night and we all had the 8oz sirloin steak which was delicious! It was well cooked, quality meat and a nice price. The service was friendly and was wait for food was a bit long but alright. And to finish for dessert there was a large menu that all sounded incredible however my sister and I just shared a honeycomb and raspberry sorbet ice cream bowl. The price at the end was good for quality and quantity. So it’s a great destination for dinner. And would say if your looking for somewhere to go that’s a good place.

We are no strangers to Browns. Our previous visit (in August) was a little disappointing to be honest, although our prior experiences had been very positive. But on this occasion it was truly a five star experience. The decor, ambience and atmosphere were excellent. The service was first class. But what really stood out was the quality of the food which has clearly gone up a level. It was just wonderful!

Rainy day, ran inside on a Friday lunch, good welcome, quick service and nice food. Good choice, almost too many glasses on the table, like too much 'stuff' on the table that you had to be careful when picking glasses up etc, need either bigger tables, or smaller quantities of stuff on them. All round good. thanks

We booked dinner at Brown's, as although regulars, we hadn't eaten there since their refurbishment. The refurbishment is great and it looks amazing, however our meal was really poor. First off, the Special Menu, which we chose from at 7pm, had the main item Chateaubriand as no longer available To give them their due, they offered fillet steaks and the vegetable trimmings at the same price. When the meal arrived everything was stone cold. The steak was a very good cut, but everything was by now lost. The young waiter was excellent from the start, and when made aware of this, it was dealt with to our satisfaction - except, we had by then bought a bottle of wine, plus two other glasses to go with the steak. This was not a cheap meal, and if it had been for a special occasion it would have ruined it. We did speak to the General Manager, who seemed to take it on board, but the kitchen let down the waiting staff who were excellent and professional. Edinburgh has dozens of restaurants in competition and this experience means we would not risk going there again.

Made reservations for a group of 44 and Browns handled it without any problems. We couldn’t order from the menu with this large group. We were all served the same dish but they were able to substitute for those with allergies or vegetarians. The steak and Guinness pie was very good as was the salted caramel profiteroles. Would love to return as a couple to try more dishes.

Family birthday meal today at Browns. Great experience - staff were excellent and the food was great. One of our party has Coeliac disease and their knowledge and skills in dealing with this was very impressive - especially in relation to cross-contamination - separate GF menu, separate cutlery and great food. Well done.

Three of us for lunch today. Uncomfortable table with bench seating. Soup cold, Goujons cold. Not great.
