Nice pub, and just that, a nice pub, no airs or graces, and probably the best pint of Guinness in town

Was OK in there with friends until we where leaving when I was stopped by the barman and asked to put back a beer cloth he accused me of taking, which by the way the landlord from the Southgate pub had given me the same night. 😡Didn't even get an apology.

Just dropped in for a "splash n sash" Not been in for years, but hasn't really changed much. Same atmosphere, same old crowd. Wonderful atmosphere, quick cheery service. Great British pub...

A great pub in the old fashioned sense. Wooden floors, old settles, and a three sided bar from where four ever changing cask ales are served. Always someone to talk to, staff are friendly and what Mike the landlord doesn't know about beer and breweries isn't worth knowing. No food, just great beer.

A blinder of a pub. Right next to the 49 bus stop from Swindon which takes you down the ridgeway past the Avebury Stones, a worthwhile adventure in itself with big views from the top deck. Brilliant untouched old school pub interior with a real atmosphere to boot. Clearly popular with locals. Excellent cask real ale.

If you like beer and a pub with lots of character(s) this is the place for you. If you want to watch football on mute and drink lager with the kids go to Neverspoons! A proper pub.

Nice pub. Didn't take any pics because I enjoyed my conversion so much Liked the prices of the beers. Affordable. The place is a nice locals spot. Great to have no TVs and just see friends having conversations.

The British Lion is the perfect proper pub. Does not serve food (just snacks, crisps and nuts and the like). But does serve fantastic beer. 4 rotating real ale pumps, plus cider and lager and wine and spirits. Lovely big and sunny beer garden. The perfect place for great drinks with friends. ❤️

Proper pub serving good proper beer

Exceptional pub. Returned to Devizes this week with work and was looking forward to a pint in the British Lion having not been here for a couple of years. They have four frequently changing real ales on offer. All were on perfect order and the range always included weaker and stronger beers. I particularly liked Liberation from the Channel Islands and Spire from Stonehenge but I doubt they’ll be there by now. The range changes daily which is great. Simple plan - pumps are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 with 1 being weakest. So easy . Order a pint of whichever number you fancy and they will look after you well. Just a great pub.

This is a very old school pub with old fashioned decor and drinks selection. Best part of this pub is the large pub garden out the back

We rated food 5 stars as we didn’t stay to eat and wouldn’t review badly unless experienced. However, we weren’t eating and our welcome, at opening time, was very poor. We were made to feel an inconvenience. This pub is close to canal, but, as walkers, it was made clear we were not welcome with our Jack Russell. Still, the nearby White Bear pub was amazing. Take your choice.

I can't rate the food because there isn't any, this is a wet pub! CAMRA award winning real ale and ciders. Proper pub atmosphere

I wrote a review in November 2017 but due to Covid restrictions on flights from Thailand (and the cost) this is my first time back since. What a wonderful pub! Fantastic rolling choice of beers and lagers. A lovely beer garden. A great Landlord and staff. Back in 2017 I called it a proper pub.... and it STILL is a proper pub!

There's a certain nostalgia as to how we remember things used to be. The British Lion encompasses exactly that sentiment. This is a pub in the truest sense, from the excellent well kept and ever changing ales that only a freehouse can offer to something you'd almost forgotten about as if a distant memory. There's no frills here but a warmth that makes you wonder. If you engage the friendly staff who have worked here for decades, they want to know your name. It's personal, it's community and why would one be surprised when as you leave, you're addressed by your name with, we hope to see you again soon. Excellence can't be faked, it comes from the heart and yes, you'll see me again very soon as the British Lion is my new favourite find!

Atmosphere, people and beer are superb. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Obnoxious guests not welcome.

Definitely a drinkers pub. The beer & cider was fantastic. Lot of choices of both. I am a fussy real cider drinker & loved the cider & my husband loves beer & we both enjoyed the drinks. I also liked the beer. There was a big garden which was lovely to sit in. Will go back when we are in the area. Well worth a visit.

What a warm and friendly place to go to! Had a great time, and Mike and his staff were amazing. Such a lovely, welcoming environment. Definitely need to try out the garden in the sunshine. Mistakenly taken for a restaurant though, it's actually just a pub.

Shouted at aggressively across the pub by bar staff. Very unprofessional and unpleasant for everyone concerned. Won’t be going back whilst she’s there.

The beers are offered on a 1 to 4 system delineated by strength - always an excellent selection but be quick as this is popular and your favourite will have been 'supped' if you don't get there in time!

A very typical old fashioned pub. Has a wide variety of real and commercial beers, lagers and ciders. Something for all tastes. Can get busy, but staff are on the ball and sort it out quickly. A wide diversity of clientel that look like everything fro university profs, accountants, farmers, bikers, ordinary joe and uncle tom cobley. All there for the great friendly atmosphere, the conversation, and the beer. All appear welcome. It has a large beer garden out back, and am lit and heated enclosure if anyone wants a smoke.We have been coning down to Devises for years, and on our pub crawls, this place is the one we stop and have a few, great place.

Not that Wadworths beers are that bad, but 6X every day can get a little wearisome. This is a friendly, no frills local boozer with a constantly rotating selection of top quality ales and ciders. Perfect place to while away a couple of hours over a few pints, a bag of crisps, and some local chatter.

Good old fashioned beer drinkers mecca with Black Rat for the real connoisseurs of God's own cider. Great choice at a reasonable prices. Staff are friendly and attentive.

Loved it in there!! It is known in Devizes to have a smell to it.....like proper pubs used to have...its from proper beer, proper people with proper banter! It is by far the best pub in Devizes if beer, banter and down right "normalness" is what you like. I had used it several times before visiting the Devizes' outdoor carnival this year. During the carnival I was drawn to a stall under the tree in the market place and thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon there. It was only later that I found out it was the British Lion stall!! Anyway, greetings from Thailand! I shall be back next year!!

This "spit and sawdust" traditional English pub does have a great selection of frequently rotated ales. I enjoyed my pint of Innocence (Plain Ales). I am only giving it three stars for its poor cleanliness. The pub itself is quite grotty inside, the tables felt sticky and there were flies buzzing around whilst we were having our drinks.

This pub is very good for the drinkers as it does not serve food. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the beer garden at the rear of the pub. Worth a visit.

The British Lion is a Devizes institution, great beer, great staff, wonderful atmosphere it embodies everything a pub should be, no frills, just great ale that varies week by week and a landlord and team who understand exactly what their regulars and visitors like. As my dad would say a Proper Boozer!

Had more than one here while in town on business. Great little place and exactly what I would want if I were in the UK and looking for a local place with local people. Enjoyed it.

This is very much a local boozer with very welcoming bar staff. It is basically a drinking pub and if you like cask ale certainly a good place to visit.

Visite el British Lion regularmente con mi perro de asistencia lyla otra y siempre nos dan una cálida bienvenida. La cerveza es verdaderamente insuperable y la selección cambia regularmente. Si te gusta la cerveza (o sidra), éste es el lugar a donde ir. No obstante las comidas.

Good typical no frills pub with various special ales advertising on a chalk board pub is a free house with good friendly people and bar staff a credit prices are good too

This is a traditional old fashioned pub and it's fantastic! Pool table, juke box, not to mention all the real ales, lovely friendly staff and a brilliant atmosphere, loved our visit we will definately return!

A "must" place to visit on every trip to Devizes. It is like a beer festival every single day. The prices are extremely reasonable too. Absolutely nothing fancy, just good beer. No food (except crisps, nuts etc.) and places to chill out

El British Lion ha sido mi agujero regular de riego en - Devizes durante 15 años, y durante ese tiempo ha sido siempre el mejor auténtico pub de ale en la ciudad. Es básico, con suelos de madera y acogedoras bancas y un montón de gente amable que están siempre listos para charlar. Los cuatro cervezas son siempre de primera y a un precio razonable. The only non-chain pub selling real ales in Devizes also the only decent beer garden. Also do a strong cider, the usual draughts and a good variety of bottles. A friendly and eclectic clientele, bar staff also very friendly.
