Popped in late on a Sunday afternoon for a snack, fantastic hospitality - everything you could wish for from a pub and nothing too much trouble. My wife is coeliac and even though it was later and we weren't spending a fortune they made a special order gluten free cauliflower cheese that was, without doubt, the best any of us had ever tasted! Good beer, lovely people and great food - wish it was my local!

Dropped in on the off chance that we could get Sunday lunch and were made very welcome. Good Everards beer on the taps which is always good. The Sunday roast dinner was generous and very well cooked. My wife’s allergies were listened to sympathetically and changes made to her meal specially to accommodate her. Thank you very much for that. A path out of the rear garden takes you down to the reservoir, so if you have an hour to walk off your lunch go and explore.

The Bricklayers has always been my favourite place for Sunday lunch. We lived locally and over the 11 years that we lived there, we must have enjoyed close to a hundred meals there and have previously left 5 star reviews. As a birthday treat my partner booked a Sunday lunch for 3 of us and we travelled a fair distance to get there. We soon realised it was under new management. I ordered a prawn starter but neither of the other two people with me bothered with a starter. It arrived in a very small drinks glass, what little there was seemed to taste ok but it was a bit pointless based on the tiny portion. I wasn't too concerned because it was the main course I was looking forward to. We had two beef and one lamb dinner after being given a choice of lamb, beef or chicken. Initially, they bought out a chicken dinner by mistake, but swiftly corrected it and bought the correct order. I was surprised to see the chicken was just a small chicken fillet and not carved chicken, so was glad i'd not ordered it. The food delivered to our table was just awful. The beef was rubbery and the lamb fatty, just cheap, badly cooked cuts of meat, just like the chicken they took away. They had put 3 very small roast potatoes on each plate with no mash and a few vegetables and a burnt Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes looked like small new potatoes that had been overcooked so all that was left was a crispy shell. The Yorkshire puddings, as stated, were just burnt. We did order a side of cauliflower cheese which actually tasted ok. The meal was just so unpleasant we decided it was probably just better to leave it and go home and put the BBQ on, so three uneaten and lightly picked at plates were sent back. When they cleared the table the waitress asked if all was ok and we informed her it wasn't. The manager then came over and asked what the problem was, it was explained to him and he said he wouldn't charge for the main. He then asked if we wanted dessert, and we decided against it just in case the homemade dessert was made by the person who couldn't cook the dinner. We overheard the family at the next table saying it was such a shame and that they like us, looked forward to dinner at the bricklayers and would have to find somewhere else. So we were not alone. Upon leaving we came to settle up only to find that despite being told that they would not charge for the main, two soft drinks, one beer and a prawn cocktail had cost £50. I don't know what happened, maybe it was just one meal that was not charged for or a mistake but quite frankly we'd had enough and just paid and left. Good timing on our part because a customer around the bar had clearly bought dog mess in on their shoes and the smell kind of summed up our overall experience but the irony was not lost on us. We would never return, I don't see how it's possible to serve food of such a low standard and not realise or not care. We were all so hungry and would have ate almost anything, this was a meal that didn't reach the low standard of almost anything.

No idea what's going on here but looking at other pictures of the Bricklayers Lunch (with cheese) it looks like it should have come with stilton and coleslaw yet both were missing. For £10.95 I would have expected these. I had the cheese and ham version and it wasn't on there either. What really annoyed me is that it was 1.56pm and we were told we had to order food straight away as the kitchen was closing at 2.00pm. At 2.12pm I heard someone else order food and then at 2.18pm someone else ordered. Not sure if they were locals but I didn't appreciate being rushed to order for no reason. The food quality and service was decent.

Location and most of the staff pleasant. There is an elderly gentleman who when I went to the bar and got the menu, I got told it was too busy to get food. However another couple got served food. Possibly because they are local. We only really wanted sandwiches. Anyway got a few drinks and then noted that this very busy old man came outside for a cigarette and then went straight back in only to come out less than 15 minutes later for another cigarette. I am not sure, but if all the other staff are so busy and you have time to come out and have cigs every 15 minutes, maybe you have time for serving some more food Even though we never got the chance to eat, I did see the food in the pub and it looked like good size portions and looked great. Pity one person can bring down the rest of the place.

Sunday lunch and only vegetarian option was the inevitable nut roast: breadcrumbs and peanuts (I tasted my friend's and it was as tasteless as I'd expected). So I asked if I could have something from the starter menu - fried camembert - with vegetables. The camembert consisted of two small round things, hard outside and molten in the middle. Tasted like they'd been bought in a Pound Shop and definitely not home made. The carrots were almost uncooked. The roast potato was soggy on the outside and hard in the middle - not cooked for long enough. The vegetarian gravy was full of lumps. And to add to that lot, when the waitress came to clear the plates - mine was still three quarters unfinished but she didn't bother asking if anything was wrong. I would normally have complained, but as my friend was paying for lunch, I didn't want to embarrass her. It was a truly awful experience and I'd never go there again.

Loved this pub it has a real cosy welcoming ambience and a great mix of tradition with the nod to king richard (artwork is fab) and modern layout. Loved the gin terrace and choice of gins. Hubby loved the choice of ales. Yummy vegetarian green veg risotto that packed a punch of flavours. Plus a tasty creamy berry pannacotta. Great atmosphere welcoming staff. Plus tikki pods outside next time might need one of them! X
