My family and I visited Brasserie Max for afternoon tea and had the most lovely time! The staff were incredible and were SO kind with my 18 month old daughter, providing her with coloring pages to entertain her while we had our tea. The food was delicious and we were able to relax and enjoy everything due to the kindness of the hosts and servers. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

As someone who goes to afternoon tea multiple times per year this remains my favourite budget friendly option. They are very knowledgable about allergens (gluten in this case), the service is excellent, and the food and tea are very good. When I've been with a group where we have different dietary restrictions they've been able to accommodate with no problems and it never feels like you're getting a substandard version of what everyone else is getting.

As soon as I arrived, the staff were superb, extremely attentive and polite, their customer service is exemplary. The lounge where we had afternoon tea was sumptuous and cosy at the same time. I met my American relatives for afternoon tea - which turned out to be the 'Royal' afternoon tea, which was perfect and added a nice touch for them. In terms of value for money, Basserie Max was very good compared to many other London hotels, and I had done my research. The food was very good and we were served three portions (rather than sandwiches refreshed or choices of cakes as you get in some other places) - but they were generous and tasty. Make sure you are hungry before you go! Very very minor things - tap water provided was warm and we were not asked if we'd like our tea refreshed but other than that which are incredibly small things - I would recommend Brasserie Max. I was pleased to find this quiet spot a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden.

For my second trip to London, afternoon tea was a must. After considerable research, Brasserie Max was on several lists for Best Afternoon Tea and the price point was right. The environment is so classy and high brow. I loved the continuity of teas, china and soap/lotion (Tall Trees) - do yourself a favor, and visit the restroom; the hand soap and lotion smell divine! Our hostess was so helpful. She made several great recommendations and allowed us to smell the teas before we ordered and we made the right tea choices because of those sniffs (Tall Trees and Mythical Creatures). Mythical Creatures was the absolute best tea I have ever had. I drank two pots so quickly I surprised myself. The scone with clotted cream and jam was heavenly. The sandwiches were pretty good, but I don't love cream cheese or egg salad so I went into it knowing I might not love all of the sandwiches. The pastries were fantastic! Absolutely fantastic! The strawberry tartlet, the peach and marscapone mousse, and the lemon macaron were outstanding. Again, everything was great. The service, the tea!, the pastries, the scones, and believe it or not the restrooms. For a first afternoon tea experience, this American would give Brasserie Max two big thumbs up! 👍🏻👍🏻

It's ok!! Lovely interior, polite staff. Food was average. Arranchini nice but tiny. Bread and butter appetizer was filling, but arrived at the same time as the main course, so we ended up having it for dessert. Orange skin-on wine less tasty than many other orange wines I've had. My friend had a steak tartare that was overpowered by far too much garlic. My main course was fine though, loved the carrots on the side! So overall, a mixed bag, hence the three stars.

The welcome in this boutique hotel in the most elegant area of London is decidedly warm and impeccable, but at the same time sufficiently informal to put every guest of the hotel, bar or restaurant at ease. Four of us had dinner at Brasserie Max on the ground floor and were won over by the savoir faire and affection of Luca, maitre d' in the dining room, and by Joao or Flavio, restaurant and bar manager respectively. The signature cocktails of Maria, the young and creative mixologist, really have an edge and were the perfect pairing with most of the dishes. My review is minus a star as we had 40 minutes after mains until we needed to leave to go to our show, we ordered dessert having been assured it would arrive in time and it sadly did not. The will they won’t they suspense of our desserts arriving was killed off when we asked for the bill and the desserts were not on it. There was also no real apology for this error. This is a shame as my family are great fans of this hotel group and all of our previous experiences have been exemplary.

For afternoon tea priced at £45 per person, this experience was slightly subpar. We were kindly greeted at the front door, where they held our coats and bags and shortly seated us after. After we were seated, we were served water and were pleased that the waitress made mention of our dietary restrictions that we listed in the reservation. After a few minutes, a different waiter (seemed like he was the manager?) came to ask if we were ready to order, to which we responded yes and after asking if we can order “a la carte” he proceeded to condescend us and said that doing so would cause a long wait time because the restaurant was "busy" despite not having more than 7 or 8 small parties and tons of empty tables. We brushed it off and decided to order all the traditional items along with the tea despite just wanting scones and tea. The tea was really good but we didn’t like that they just leave the tea steeping in the pot, which caused it to quickly become bitter and undrinkable. The desserts on the top tier were all quite tasty and we enjoyed them. We didn’t enjoy the sandwiches on the other hand because the bread was cold and stale. The scones were hit or miss: some were really dry while others were more moist. Overall, I don’t think I’d return to this establishment unless I couldn’t find another reservation for afternoon tea and I’d only order the tea, desserts, and scones.

Well this could have been a 5-star review all-round but for one very important issue. The booking was for 3 people (all school friends, two of whom had not seen each other for 42 years). I had made the booking and it so happened that one of my friends arrived first. She was told that the restaurant could not accept credit cards and was asked to pass that on the message to my friend and me. Although she texted me, the signal inside the restaurant was so poor that I didn't receive her message until I was on the train home. And she forgot to tell me in person as we were all so excited to see each other after such long time. The 'front of house' did not mention that it was cash-only when I arrived which was their omission. When it came to the payment (£67 each), I only had a £10 note as it is very rare to need cash anywhere in the UK, especially in London. They told me that I could use an ATM inside a convenience store up the road, but that had run out of cash, probably due to all the other diners that had had to withdraw money to pay the bill. At this point I phoned the restaurant in a very agitated state saying I could not find another ATM in the vicinity. I suffer from anxiety and was on the verge of a panic attack. The staff told me to return to the hotel/restaurant and that someone would escort me to an ATM on Long Acre which they did. This was a very stressful end to a wonderful meal. It was not my fault that their credit card system was down and that they had not told me. They had my details so could have texted me that morning. I will never go back due to the bad memory. I wish I had stood my ground and exchanged details with them so I could have paid by BACS or by telephone the next day. I am a very honest person so there is no way I would have not honoured that promise.

A lovely place in the centre of Covent Garden, very convenient to various shops and theatres, (near Matilda). We sat outside and people watched. We ordered cocktails, Chardonnay and Rathfinny sparkling wine. We also had scampi, fries and olives. The scampi was a little dry, however the fries and olives were delicious. The waiter Flavio is exemplary. He was friendly, attentive, professional and charming. I would recommend this spot and will return for sure.

The dinner date with friends started off very well in a sophisticated beautiful restaurant, however our evening was spoiled by the arrival of a party of over 50 guests attending a private screening in a downstairs room. Unfortunately most of the attendees stayed at the bar, they were extremely excitable shouting and screeching. The staff there tried to steer them downstairs and asked them to quieten their behaviour. Unfortunately they didn’t have much luck. I can only imagine this is what sitting in McDonalds for a meal would be like.

I booked because this was listed on the Condé Nast Traveller for 10 Best High Tea in London. Very berry tea was delicious. The scones were warm and fresh, although the crème was dry and pasty. The finger sandwichs were mostly bread and the sweets were just ok. Server was attentive. Over was just Ok, expected more from a CN Traveller recommendation.

Humble little pub tucked away near King’s Cross. I’ve become a regular for the great pint of Guinness here.
