Out for brunch at a slow time with only two tables total (including ours). There were four front of house staff, so as many waitresses as patrons. Staff were chatting and forgot our table! From there it went from bad to worse. The cappuccino was cold. The restaurant was cold - with door wide open in March. Strange food substitutions were made without asking first. £5 extra charges were made without notifying us of the cost. Condiments were offered but not delivered. The eggs were sunny side up AND overcooked - which I've never seen a cook do before! Like other diners mention, there were too many weird flavour combos. As the blonde commented "If you're doing something classic, don't f**k with it! Just do it really well" Don't combine smoky sauce and parsley ; 0 This should have been the best brunch ever at an expensive £28 for two breakfast buns and two hot drinks. Alas drinks, food, atmosphere, and service were all poor by comparison.

Arrived by ferry, short, steep walk up from quay and 2 minutes from the entrance to Brentwood, beautiful view over the lake and fells beyond, initially had cake and coffee then came back for lunch, different (and complicated) menu and wide choice of cakes, all the food was well presented, very tasty and good sized portions. We had a lovely time, many thanks, we would revisit just for the cafe.

First impressions, what an incredible location! Me and my boyfriend sat by the window and had a lovely view of Coniston. Perfect rainy day retreat. The menu was a bit intimidating for me but I bit the bullet and got the heaped sausage hash. OMG it was to die for! Absolutely stunning sausages and hash browns and the gravy was delicious. My boyfriend had the halloumi salad, he said it was nice but had major food envy over my meal! We'll definitely pop back next time we're visiting the lakes.

Do not really like the current menu. I am sure some will love it but for me it was all overcomplicated and nothing plain. I chose a bacon and hash brown balm but had to give up after eating half of it. Too many unusual flavours not at all to my liking. We visit regularly but will no longer have lunch..

Walked here (about 40 mins) in the aftermath of The Great Cumbrian Snowstorm slipping and sliding on the icy road. The Terrace had been closed for four days due to the snow, but its website said it was reopening that day. What it didn't tell us was that there was no food! Bit of a chat with a friendly waitress and she conceded that she could do two toasted teacakes. The were the worst teacakes of my long life (I'm 78). Preparation must have been as follows: take a two week old teacake, cut in half, bake in a slow oven until rock hard all through, leave on the counter until cold, serve with a pat of butter so ice cold it would not have melted on a hot fresh teacake. But what the hell? Five stars for opening at all in these conditions, for providing a destination for our walk, a roaring fire and a nice glass of wine. A great day to be alive, the snowscapes were magnificent, the sun shone (albeit briefly), and - so rare for the Lake District - the silence was tangible. Give me more days like this. Please.

The food looked delicious however we were unable to try the full range of food. We had planned to go here for lunch and arrived at around 1:30pm but unfortunately an event was taking place so not only was there no where to sit in doors, every table outside was dirty and all had used crockery and mugs on which was a shame. When we went in to order we were told they were only serving tea/coffee and cakes. We weren’t given a menu of what they did have so weren’t sure what drinks they had to offer and when I asked if they had anything savoury like a bag of crisps or sandwich I was told no. We settled for some cakes as we had come all the way to try this place. My partner had a scone which was huge and he really enjoyed and I had a brownie which was very soft but ultra rich and chocolaty. I also had a delicious cappuccino. The scenery was beautiful and the gentlemen at the register was polite but seemed very stressed as there was a lot of people hoping to get something more substantial than the cakes on offer. He also seemed to be the only staff member cleaning the outside tables and serving food to guests so things took quite a long time. It might be worth getting some more staff in when there is an event like this and perhaps pre-making a selection of sandwiches to sell to people in need of lunches when an event like this is on.

We came here after a lovely walk from the water. There was lots of room on the terrace and also inside the café. It was table service only but the waiter was quick to take our order and food was quick to arrive. The menu is rather simple but caters to people who are gluten free and vegans. Me and my husband both ordered a toastie which was tasted great and enjoyed a drink whilst taking in the view. The only slight issue we had was when it came to paying. We went inside to pay and due to how busy it was I stood at the counter for a good 3-5 minutes before my presence was acknowledged. Otherwise, an ideal lunch.

Tea - no Darjeeling on offer. Tea is tea bags not tea leaves. Cake - serviceable but not excellent. Scone - fruity but rather dry and maybe a bit overcooked. Jam - tiny glass pot. Music - finished up with some kind of rap. Overall disappointing - Chris and Gilly Addison - former proprietors till 2015 - you are missed and your standard of excellence has not been maintained.

Our premium priced food arrived in polystyrene takeaway boxes - AAAARGH! We'd enjoyed a late lunch (food ranged between good and ok) but the service was very poor - food arrived and left with no cutlery on the table and staff appeared generally uninterested in anything to do with customers. Even though the restaurant had quietened down, our plates were left uncleared for around an hour; we ordered some pudding which the male member of staff brought in the takeaway boxes, apparently because it was now 15-20 minutes from their closing time. It was sent back. Staff appeared more interested in themselves than customers, it seems this idyllic location guarantees trade, which results in this shoddy and rude service.

The food was delicious - toasties were just what we needed on a wet day. We added chips which were crisp and well cooked and the slaw was lovely and tart and a good foil for the richness of the brie. We arrived at this dog friendly cafe on a warm sunny afternoon.after a long walk in Grizdale forest, sat on the terrace with glorious views. We ordered 2 americanos and one fruit scone as we had seen one at another table and they were huge. The Scone was the best we had eaten on our holiday here and with a proper small jar of premium jam, not a plastic sachet (like Herdwicks) also a large pot of clotted cream. The coffee was excellent and all with table service, very good value all round. Would certainly return.

We were planning on coming back about 2, however I soon realised we would not get a table if we left as they were all reserved past 1.30pm. The food was amazing, some of the best we have eaten this holiday, and on their own worth 5 stars. The staff were very freindly and good with allergies, catering for dietary adjustments. The 4 star is due to "management of staffing level". They needed to have another 2 members of staff on as you could tell they were rushed off their feet and unable to turn over tables fast enougth to meet demand.

I visited this coffee shop/cafe with 3 others. We were doing a 40 mile bike ride around the Lake District and our route planner had picked this establishment for lunch. The facility is beautifully located against an idyllic backdrop of the lake and hills in the background. There are bike stands to leave your bike and the whole ambience of the restaurant is very welcoming. Sadly we missed lunch which was no bad thing considering the Lake District is all about hills but we did have cold drinks and cake. The sticky toffee pudding and the raspberry rocky road slices we had were very good value, large sizes and delicious food. The drinks and the food were very reasonably priced. Looking at the quality of the place I was expecting to pay more! The staff were friendly and very helpful. One of the waitresses kindly filled up our water bottles for us as it was a very hot day. A great place to go and dine/rest would highly recommend it. It seems popular but the view is sensational and the venue outstanding. Would definitely go again next trip.

We had been visiting the gardens and when we got here there was a bit of a queue outside. We were in no rush so waited patiently for a table to be free, there seemed to be a few people with reservations and eventually a "no show" freed up a table for us. It was very sunny but there was plenty of shade cover on the terrace, the view alone was worth it and we sat watching the swallows swooping from their nest under the rafters. They seemed quite understaffed and said they weren't doing sandwiches, but they had hot food options or cakes and scones. We opted for the scone, it was a very generous size, still warm, and had a mix of dried fruits in it (orange peel?)... delicious!

Called here for lunch. The place is delightful with indoor and out door seating and great views of the Old Man across Coniston lake. The staff were really friendly and helpful. My only criticism was with the menu. If you just want coffee/tea with cakes it is fine and most people seemed to be going for this even though it was lunchtime. However there were no sandwiches/light lunch choices on the menu - just 3 main courses which none of us wanted. In the end we ordered one of these which was a "foot" of Cumberland sausage in a ciabata with salad and sweet potato wedges. It was a very generous portion so we split it into 3! It was delicious but in my view could have been served as a half portion (and charged more than half the price). The same was true of the other 2 main courses which we saw being served to others. We took some cakes away with us to eat at home. They were excellent. Have knocked a star off overall rating for the limited menu.

We were pretty much ignored by the waitresses and waited at the entrance (as instructed by the covid safety sign) for ages only to eventually go inside and find the 4 of them standing around eating cake. Other older folks received the same treatment and clearly needed a seat but were left to stand for no reason despite loads of empty tables. Also the toilets were rank. I don't think anyone had cleaned them all day from the state of things. Not good in covid times. The view and the coffee were pretty good but it's hard to overcome the bad mood created by the staff. A lot of customers ended up instructing each other on how to finally get seated or service because it was clear the staff weren't going to help. The bad service had clearly become a bit of a joke to everyone.

We were looking forward to ‘tea on the terrace’ after an energetic walk around nearby Tarn Hows. Having visited several times in previous years, we remembered the cabinet displaying a tempting array of cakes, scones delicious treats. But where was it? We were pointed to the disappointing menu which had just 3 afternoon tea related items - all over-priced! The promised scone (at £4.50) was not available so I settled for what was described as a ‘lemon drizzle cake’ - it tasted like a slab of compressed sawdust, with a light drizzle of slightly lemon flavoured icing over it: quite the worst piece of cake I have ever been served! My companions were equally disappointed with their offerings. Such a shame, because the staff were friendly and efficient, and the COVID-19 arrangements were sensible. Quite why the previous afternoon tea offerings had been discontinued is anybody’s guess. Maybe it has something to do with their seeming focus on meeting the needs of vegan and vegetarian customers? Surely they would enjoy the tasty flapjacks and shortbreads and fruit cakes previously offered?

We were visiting Brantwood for the annual Christmas Fair and went for our coffee at the Terrace. Busy, but not overwhelmingly so, and we found a table inside. I ordered at the counter, coffee, pot of tea for one and 2 cakes, for which I had to pay over £12. Pretty expensive, even by Lake District standards. When the order arrived at out table everything was disposable, cakes in little boxes, wooden cutlery, and drinks in paper cups. And this was the problem, the tea was pre-made and milk added. When I said I'd ordered a pot of tea I was told that as it was the fair they were serving everything like this and no pots of tea available. So why was I not told this when I ordered, even though I had discussed the types of tea available. My husband is quite particular about his tea, he likes it strong with very little milk, and what arrived was definitely not this. I explained this to the waitress who did offer to put another tea bag in a paper cup of hot water, but by then he had gone off the whole idea of tea. She didn't offer to refund the cost of the undrunk tea. The cakes were ok, though far too much butter icing on the coffee cake. The scone was deemed to be good. But when I go to a café for a drink and cake I do not expect it to be served in paper and cardboard, especially not at those prices (or perhaps that was the reason for those prices). I don't think that the fact that you are expecting to be busy is an excuse for such a lack of standards. The café only holds a finite number of customers at any time, and they should be able to cope with that number with a suitable staff ratio. After all, if they are busy they are making more money and can afford to staff the place properly. We were extremely disappointed, and, as has been mentioned by others, there is nowhere else locally where you can get refreshments.

My wife and I have been going to this cafe since its inception many years , starting out as the Jumping Jenny .Our last visit was about 3.30 in the afternoon .The staff were more intent on getting ready to close up a little later . Their attitude to our inquiries was extremely rude . For example my wife asked if a menu item was available to take away for use that evening warmed up . “Hot food was finished “ was the gist of the reply in an abrupt manner . Our drinks were then served in a very peremptory manner . A visit to that cafe is usually one of the highlights of our annual visits to that part of the Lakes . We shall think twice about going again if the same staff are still there in future .

Great position for this Coffee House/restaurant with amazing views (if the weather permits). Had good homemade soup for our light lunch but my coffee was not to my taste.

With deeply-pleasing surroundings whether inside or out, on the premises of the fine house which was once John Ruskin's, how can such a place fail?

Been visiting Brantwood for over 20 years, and the Terrace when exchanged hands from previous owner moved on. Always good food quality, not cheap. Disappointed in my latest visit. Tasty mezze plate, sadly overpriced and flatbread was so hard impossible to cut.think had been reheated in microwave. Sadly hot cross buns same very hard nearly inedible, quite small and hugely overpriced at 3.75 each, over 12 pounds for tea for two and two hot cross buns.

We have been here several times and always enjoyed the food. Initially the menu looked a bit too adventurous for us (curried pastries, etc), but we settled for a wild boar sausage roll with chips and salad garnish, persian love cake and vegan super seed & fruit flapjack. The prices are not cheap, but the setting is great, and the food was fantastic. The wild boar sausage roll was a flavourful hit, the chips and salad dressing just right, and the persian love cake - wow, just amazing: moist with subtle flavours of rose, lemon and almond, with a pistachio crumb topping, and the flapjack was sweet, chewy and very filling.

nice location and was warm and food that did arrive was good but not cheap and please explain to me what artisan bread is and why is it so expensive apparently. Soup looked okay and pasties or sausage roll with stilton was as well, and coffees okay

We called into the café at Brantwood before visiting the house. The food was imaginative and of a very high quality. The service was helpful and friendly. The salad was really fresh and not the run of the mill lettuce and tomato.

My fiance and I were pleasantly surprised by the good quality of our lunch. I had a delicious salad and a scrummy chocolate and blackberry tart. The coffee was pretty good too. We can wholeheartedly recommend the attractive Terrace restaurant set in the beautiful grounds of this lovely old house and great little museum.

I tasted the best sausage rolls in the world in this cafe! Cumberland sausage with black pudding (but they change almost daily!) and honeycomb tiffin to die for. All in evoctive surroundings with the horse troughs still in situ!

Arrived after 1pm and almost all the hot food had sold out. Ordered 2 duck sausage rolls, soup and a cake plus drinks. Had a long wait but sat outside and took in the lovely views so didn't mind too much but did wonder why serving up soup and sausage rolls would take so long and finished our drinks before food arrived. The sausage rolls would have been good if the pastry hadn't been so chewy(probably due to reheating) and they forgot the soup.

Very pleasant, cosy cafe, with a somewhat limited menu (certainly it was on 15 August). Not particularly busy on this occasion but staff were friendly and very efficient. My flat white coffee and my wife's tea were excellent. Will definitely return.

Unimpressive, tired, and very limited selection of cakes awaited our eager eyes as free an intrepid and arduous adventure paddling across the choppy, gusty and rainy surface of Coniston water. The adults refrained from cake to leave enough for the children. The three meagre slices of remaining cake with 3 cups of tea came to around £20. A very underwhelming experience. Please keep your selection stocked or at least reduce the cakes standing.

We found The Terrace surfing on TripAdvisor when driving in the neighborhood. It is a little bit a hidden place but what a nice surprise. Excellent salads and quiches, great coffee house, good atmosphere, top price/quality. On top you get an excellent view on the lake.

My husband and I came here for lunch whilst holidaying in the Lake District - if you get the chance to visit, the views are well worth it! The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. Compared to other places, it was more costly for what we ate but given the view and surroundings, we didn’t mind this at all. I would definitely recommend this as a place to eat - the home baked cakes are incredible too!

We visited for lunch and could have eaten anything of the menu, all sounded delicious but we plumped for the feta and houmous sandwiches which were gorgeous. The salad was very tasty and I rarely say that about any salad so well done Brantwood.

We ate as a group a and whilst the food was great, the service was not. The gentleman serving us seemed very stressed and not the correct disposition for front of house service. Food was dropped on the table without eye contact and we had to guess it was for the person opposite. There were numerous errors with the orders and long queues to pay.

Visited with my son on a sunny Monday afternoon in June. We sat on the terrace and had a lovely pot of mint tea and a latte. The views were stunning! Absolutely beautiful! We were tempted, after speaking to the waitress, to climb the Old Man, even though it was quite late. Would love to go back! Friendly, lovely service and amazing views!

Called here for a takeaway lunch, used them several times before. Service was disappointing to say the least. Not a please or thankyou from the ladies working in the shop - even when I pointed out they'd only charged me for 1 flat white! Previous reviews also highlight the fact that the staff are miserable, they respond but do nothing to address the concerns raised. Also, I would've thought that as u was the only customer in the shop on a very wet day would have been positive for them - obviously not! Not sure I'll return here.

Visited here with my Dad today. Asked for a tea cake and then a scone both not on the menu anymore. I had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese paid over £8 and that was it no sides, no even a bit of salad - didn’t taste great. Dad ordered pancakes in the end 2 tiny pancakes on a dish - still hungry when we left. Not great service either. Disappointed!

Terrible customer service! The young girl at the till clearly did not want to be there. She was huffing and puffing at customers! Yes, it was very busy as yesterday, 15th October was a beautiful autumn day but I would think they would be glad of end of season trade! I could not sit down because they were so busy so opted to ask for take away coffee and cake, only to be told by her 'I'm not doing take away'. Really? The local co-op is closed for a refurbishment and they really could capitalise on that if they employed more capable, less miserable staff! Shocking!! Won't return!

Called in for a coffee and snack after our frequent walk along the bay and round back into Arnside. When this first opened I was a little wary as we are used to small intimate tea/coffee shops in Arnside. However this was our second visit and as we entered we were greeted by obviously the front of house guy “David”. Wow does this guy know how to do it Welcoming ,friendly, Northern (always a bonus). Had a lovely coffee and Hubby had a great crisp bacon bun. The vibe in this cafe/restaurant is great., modern but great service. We live quite locally and are encouraged to go in the evening now as well. In our opinion the best restaurants are always about the front of house and Crossfields has it right. Everyone in this place has a great view of our beautiful Morecambe bay.
