We were staying in the Abbey Hotel on a dinner bed and breakfast deal. We were able to choose from a 3 course menu all of which sounded very nice. Starters were OK, I had halloumi and beetroot but it was a little short on beetroot and overly sweet with balsamic. My husband had gravlak which he enjoyed. Both offered bread but had one bite and left it as it was stale. For mains I had chicken and mash with onions and green beans. It needed another veg on the plate and again was overly sweet with another heavy handed addition of balsamic. My husband had 'crispy' pork belly - the majority of the pork was inedible as rather than being crispy it was an un crisped layer of fat and rather unpleasant. For desert my husband had a chocolate tart which was ok. I ordered the special of strudel with ice cream. It was unfortunately not a strudel and not edible. It was a parcel of very hard filo pastry filled with what we suspect was left over tinned fruit from the breakfast buffet, a few currents and a lot of what we think was bread crumbs. It was awful and I left it all. Service was ok except one waitress kept squeezing behind my chair rather than walking round the table next to us. We were not asked how our meals were despite leaving some elements untouched, and weren't offered a tea or coffee at the end of the meal - we aren't good at complaining and so didn't raise the issues and regret this. My husband attempted to pay for his wine and the staff seemed unable to work the tills properly. We guess they must be new tills with the refurbishment. All in all we wouldn't go back. Some elements were Ok but nothing was great and had we paid full price rather than as part of our hotel stay deal we would have been massively dissapointed.

We stayed at the abbey hotel through a secret escapes break. The reception staff were amazing. We were there for three nights and had two meals in the Tawnys bar ( an absolute shambles) as was the service of the spa booking team. But on our final night we were awarded with a fantastic meal in the brambles restaurant. The staff were really friendly and well organised. They told us exactly how many courses we were allowed, and the service couldn't be faulted. They left you to eat in peace but where there if you needed anything. The food was delicious and it made our last night really memorable.

We decided to give this restaurant another try after a disappointing lunch a few weeks ago. This meal was no better- over spiced soup, wishy washy vegetables, thin watery gravy and the cardinal sin for a Sunday lunch-no roast potatoes due to “delivery issues “ Won’t be coming again.

We ate there twice on a golf weekend, three course menu with plenty of choice and variety. With three courses there was always the option of after dinner cheese board if we were not filled up, but in fact that was not necessary and the portions were reasonable. Everyone enjoyed their choices, from mussels to braised beef, deserts were delicious. The staff could not have been more helpful.

Well, that's the first time I've eaten a delicious three course meal and come away hungry! Went for a Christmas party. Staff are lovely and helpful. Food was hot and very tasty, but if you're going to serve such small portions for a main meal, please use smaller plates. Many if us were waiting for dishes of extra veg there was do much space on the plates. I'm not a massive eater, and rarely eat three courses, but I was hungry after eating, which for neatly £40 is not acceptable. Disco was good, and he was happy to play requests.

Booked for Xmas Lunch. Car Parking absolutely stuffed - must be popular place. Polite reception directed us to dining area. Tables well laid out in festive theme. Unfortunately they had appeared to have adopted the Ryanair system of sardines in a can. Until one chair was removed, I had my arm around the guy sitting next to me. The service was good considering the enormous number of people crushed into the dining area. The carrot soup was tasty, although the bread roll was doughy and unappetising. The main meal of pork was quite tasty, what little there was of it. Two thin slices of pork, a small cake of potato, and an extremely disappointing selection of vegetables. Three miniscule two inch pencil sized over cooked slivers of carrot and three of parsnip. The whole lot - one fork full! Plus a helping of gravy...that was it! The addition of a single sprout would have doubled the portion, and also introduced a bit of colour onto the otherwise grey looking ensemble. The addition of some stuffing would have been most welcome, as would one of the small cocktail sausages (as was with the Turkey option). The sticky pudding and sauce lived up to it's name and went some way to filling the vacuous hole in my stomach. Tea or coffee finished off the meal. For a hotel that boasts a 4 Star rating, this meal was somewhat of a disappointment. The whole meal, what little there was of it, left the impression of coming from microwaveable catering bags. I would recommend potential diners investigate any of the local 'Two for a Tenner' offers if they have a normal appetite. Despite the previous comments which I hope the hotel can take on board, it was an enjoyable lunch surrounded by friends in a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Mixed feelings about my dinner here, starter was pleasant with well cooked scallops. Could have been more caramelised on the outside. Main meal took over an hour to arrive. There had been some mistake and they wanted to give me a different dish that had been cooked already but sadly I just didn’t fancy that. The meal came eventually with well cooked pollack and beautiful fondant potato. Not sure about the vegetables. Would have loved to try dessert but by that time it was just too late and I had to get to bed for an early start. However, the staff were very apologetic and made good attempts to make amends. I would try this restaurant again as I’m sure I was just a bit unlucky.

I attended an afternoon tea at the Abbey with some of my family, and a combination of 4 children. (2 with disabilities). Upon arrival, we were directed to an empty bar area, only to look round for a member of staff to book in. After a good long 5 minutes or so we were greeted by a lady who tried to find our booking, But was looking at the wrong piece of paper. We waited again for her to find the right paper for the day and show us to our table. The table arrangement itself was beautiful. But there was no ambience or any music in the back ground. It was extremely quiet. Felt like the children couldn't speak loudly. The lady that seated us, came back for our drinks order and was immediately confused when asked her to bring 3 milkshakes and 1 squash (drinks part of our afternoon tea) she asked numerous times what we wanted. This was slightly frustrating to say the least. Next we had our order arrive, with a pot of tea, but had to wait 50 minutes before we got any milk to go with it! This meant the tea was already cold and had to order a second pot. When the afternoon tea had arrived, it wasn't even our order! A poor family of a mum and 3 children were looking at us as they had arrived well before we did and it was obvious that the afternoon tea was theirs!! I helped the waitress take there tea over to them and I apologised. Finally, when the children's afternoon tea came, there were 4 fingers of bread,a couple of cakes and 2 scones. This was supposed to go between 4 children.....at £11 each child. £44 for this was not acceptable. I spoke to a lady in charge and said this is not what I ordered when I booked and the staff argued with me that this is what you get! So this would work out at 1 jam finger sandwich, 1 ham finger sandwich, 1 jam tart, a babybel and a half a scone for each child. £44. Jokers. Not on. I again complained and spoke to a duty manager. Again, being argued with is not fun in front of your family! She asked me what I needed to put this right! I said another children's afternoon tea would be great, she went off to do this! (Being the ever friendly manager, She Said we didn't have to pay for this extra children's tea - Ha!) So already we had waited over an hour to be served a very expensive piece of cake. I also ordered a gluten free afternoon tea between 2 adults. 3 finger sandwiches came out. How do you share 3 finger sandwiches between 2 people? And a mince pie from Sainsbury's cut in half. By this point I couldn't be bothered to ask anyone where the food was for the price I was paying!! Ridiculous! As for the children. They were very hungry and the 2 disabled children who had to wait so long were very upset when we left. It was a very traumatic experience. As we left, it was obvious that the staff were unhappy about having to help us - there was 3 families in the area for afternoon tea - so wasn't busy at all. The duty manager could have at least apologised instead of arguing with me . It's not my fault that whomever booked us in and advised us of how much food we'd need is clearly in need of more training. If you want a decent afternoon tea for your money, go elsewhere. It was a complete rip off and not so much as a treat at all, more like how much??? Where's the food?!! Didn't realise making jam sandwiches were so expensive! Feel really let down by the Abbey. Won't be booking again and will make sure everyone knows to keep their money! Utter shambles.

The Bramblings is located inside the Abbey Hotel, where I was staying. It's just to the right of reception as you enter the hotel. As you go in, there's a bar serving the usual suspects beerwise. But also there is a handpulled ale named for the hotel. I had two pints of it and very nice it was too.On to the restaurant. I was asked on entry whether I had a reservation. I didn't, but as a hotel guest they quickly found me a table. I was brought a complimentary roll with butter, plus bottled water. As a starter, I took the goat cheese bon bons, which were excellent and just set off the appetite. The main was the fillet steak with blue cheese sauce. Again, pretty good, though a tad overcooked for medium rare in my opinion. The service was attentive without being intrusive; just how I like it.Excellent hotel restaurant; highly recommended if you don't mind paying the price; not much if any change out of £40.

We ate as part of a DBB package. The three courses were equally excellent. My starter of galia melon with crayfish tails was so prettily arranged and deliciously cool and refreshing in the mouth, the rump of lamb that followed with mash and spring cabbage came with a delcious sauce [modified by the chef according to my taste] was succulent and tender. The sweet of ganache with passion fruit with shortbread was really unusual, tangy and delicious. There had been decor changes too - smartening an already modern restaurant. Service was prompt and knowledgeable and the wine list good to complement the food. All in all a delicious meal to end our first day.

We were then informed that there was no fillet steak or chicken left on the menu. I ended up having a rib eye steak instead, what a mistake, full of grisal and fat. Complained to the waitress who informed her supervisor/manager, she informed us "we'll take it off your bill" I told her it was in with our room rate, which I have to say, at £220 per night, we expected a little more of a choice! As we were paying our final bill, no mention of the discount for the sub standard meal. I'm afraid to say, they've lost a customer of me and my wife.

Redditch is rather a gastronomic desert. There's a good Indian ( Rilys) in the town centre but nothing much else. There have been some fairly pathetic recent attempts to create a "food hub" by the cinema but there's nowhere to get a good meal without travelling some distance ( unless you want Indian or Chinese cuisine). This Saturday we decided to try Bramblings. It wasn't too far away. It looked good on line and so we booked. The menu was not exactly adventurous but there was, I suppose, a fair choice. With starters priced at £5, a £4.50 supplement for seared scallops was rather ambitious. The wine list was not bad but I'm not going to pay about £18 for a very run of the mill Pinot Grigio. We in fact had a very good Cotes de Province, but at a hefty £23.00 price tag. We had been given the inevitable bread rolls when we ordered, but these were cold and the " butter" was some form of yellow spread.Whatever it was, it was most certainly not butter. We then started with anti pasti. So far so good but the ciabatta was stone cold . This was a theme which was to continue throughout the evening. For the main course we had both chosen sea bass with caviar and samphire. The fish came on a bed of something that might have been kale, but where oh where was the samphire? On detailed investigation there were two or three microscopic strands of it and what at first appeared to be half a dozen peppercorns turned out to be the caviar. The sea bass itself was ok but nothing special. The potatoes were...you guessed it, cold.We pressed on to the dessert course. The sticky toffee pudding was closer to parkin, but passable. I had opted for the cheese board. It was supposed to be £5.00. What does the £5.00 get you? Well...just the board actually, that is to say biscuits, a little chutney and some celery. Cheese? Certainly not. There is, in fact, a reasonable selection of cheeses but each one is at an extra cost of £1.25 !That was just silly. Having got this far I asked for some blue veined Brie and Hereford Hop. To be fair, the portions were generous but the Brie was a under-ripe and the Herefordshire Hop had obviously just come out of the fridge. It was stone cold to the touch. I'm sorry but that was just not good enough.Throughout the meal the service had been on the slow side but as diners left towards the end of the evening the staff appeared to leave too and the level of service just vanished. Our taxi arrived and I had still not received the bill. We were never even offered coffee and I had no chance to make my views known to anyone before leaving to get into the waiting cab.The meal for two cost a little over £80. For that sort of money I expect better. I had hoped to find something a little special but the reality was disappointing. A pity really as the locality deserves better than this.

We had a relaxed drink in the bar and then went into the restaurant and wre delighted to find that we had a round table for the 7 of us so it was easy to chat. It is all self service but don't let this put you off! The starters were a lovely roast pepper soup (my only comment was it could have been warmer) and the range of salads were extensive and looked very fresh. The carvery offered gammon, pork and turkey as well as a canneloni vegetarian dish. Big range of vegetables - peas, parsnips, red cabbage, ratatouille, roast and new potatoes, carrots.. plus yorkshire puddings, sausage and bacon and ample gravy - it was all delicious. Range of desserts were excellent - chocolate cake, trifle, cheesecake, profiteroles, crumble etc. etc. AND cheese and biscuits. The service was excellent - they brought our coffee through to the library without even being asked. And all 3 courses for £14!!!! (I think £6 for children and those under 3 go free). Had a really great evening here back in June with my partner, the food was some of the best I've had (British cuisine) and then returned in September to have the Sunday carvery with family. On both occasions I was really impressed with the food and service. Will be back soon!

Had a lovely time here. The service was spot on and the team were very attentive. Very pleased with this as they made sure we were all well looked after. A great choice of starters and mains. Veggies were very fresh and seasonal. My Salmon fillet was a bit overcooked for my liking. The choice of desserts was great, although my only gripe was that the custard tasted quite artificial, to the point that it left a powdery texture in your mouth.

We had a small family celebration and were looking for somewhere to hold it. We had tried the carvery here a couple of times before and were impressed so we booked for twenty adults and five children. I cannot praise the staff here too highly. We were well looked after from the time the guests started to arrive to when we left. They were very patient, especially when our youngest member spilled the basket of cheese biscuits on the floor. The soup was hot and tasty and came with several different breads. The cold table had a large choice of meats, fish, salads with coleslaw, potato salad and the like. The carvery was hot and the meats tender. For afters there was a hot dessert, crumble and custard and several cold ones, fresh fruit salad, cheesecake and chocolate cake. There were lashings of fresh cream, not the tinned 'squirty' stuff, for the afters. For a finale there were two cheeses, Cheddar and Stilton, with biscuits, which had been replaced following our little mishap. You may visit the food bars as many times as you wish, a couple of the group did manage to do so.There is a lovely lounge area where we sat and drank coffee after the meal and an outside terrace where the children could play.We all had a terrific afternoon.

We booked this hotel for our wedding reception on 24-7-2012, Kay organised the day for us. It was a spectacular day and we could not have been happier, the staff made us feel special and we will always remember this day for the right reasons.Based on our experience, we decided to get back there on or around our anniversary every year, starting with our first anniversary. We booked a table for 4 in the Bramblings restaurant (grooms parents with us). We ordered drinks at the bar, two small bottles of tonic water and two glasses, the barman was incapable of pouring them into the glasses equally and ignored us when we commented on this.We were seated quickly and were handed menus. We were asked if we wanted some table water to which we responded "yes". We had to ask for the water about 15 minutes later. We were asked if we wanted bread rolls to which we responded "yes", the butter arrived about 10 minutes later. Only one of us ordered a starter which was delivered fairly quickly, as were the main courses. We ordered side orders of chips which arrived lukewarm and had to be returned. Overall the quality of the food was good, which should be expected at the prices. There were approximately 6 covers including ours at the time. The staff were not attentive, they walked past us on several occasions to serve other customers with drinks etc. We were being ignored. We had to get ask for the dessert menu, we sat there for 20 minutes with the menu before we had to attract attention once again to order a sweet, at this point we were offered further drinks. One item on the sweet menu says to allow 15 minutes for preparation. 2 of us ordered that item, 1 ordered another item. the 2 sweets were delivered after 25 minutes, the other 5 minutes later. I had given up at this point and had gone to sit in the bar.We complained at the service at this point and were attended by Naomi who said "You should have told us it was your wedding anniversary at the time of booking", So we can assume you have two levels of service? one unknown and the other 'service' level we received. Naomi offered to provide us with free drinks but needed to clear this with the duty manager. The duty manager attended and the situation was discussed. She offered to reduce the bill for 2 diners which we accepted. The online booking confirmation via toptable states smart casual dress code which we adhered to, after all this is a golf club and they are supposed to have some degree of exclusivity. It would appear that shorts, sandals and t shirts are also acceptable. We emailed The Abbey the next day and received a reply stating that someone would be in touch. We deemed 4 working days an acceptable amount of time before we submitted this review. Last year before booking our reception venue, we visited and researched several venues in Redditch. The Abbey came out top for everything, our expectations were high and they delivered 100%, so a return visit was a no brainer! We were going to come back and maybe book the same room every year. This experience has soured our memory and changed our minds. We will not be returning.

We dined here during a night away in the spa hotel. With no other options within walking distance it seemed an obvious choice for us, but as with all hotel restaurants it's not cheap. The house menu offered two courses for £20.50 or three for £25.50. 8oz sirloin steak £21.95 and pan fried sea bass for £17.25 as a couple of examples (both from the al a carte menu). Having said that we were both happy...I had a starter of Asian style fish cakes which was perfect and a main of 'duo of English lamb'. At first everything looked like small portions, but with the free bread roll and butter was comfortably adequate. The service was attentive and polite, and the wine list seemed reasonable - we had a Pinot for £17.95. Not much was available by the glass though. The decor was lovely although some tables looked rather dark. On the Sunday evening we ate there was only five other tables occupied but the atmosphere was pleasant with soft backing music. I'm not sure it is somewhere I would visit again unless I was staying the hotel, but for what it was it was lovely.

I chose goats cheese terrine and then gnocchi. Both were good. Others had a burger and they looked seriously huge but also worth a try!

Bramblings is a restaurant that's part of the Abbey Hotel & Spa on the outskirts of Redditch. The restaurant is open to residents or visitors seven days a week.I first ate here during an overnight stay a few months ago and the food was bad - tiny portions with a very ill-chosen sauce accompanying the main dish. I like to give restaurants a second chance though as there's always the possibility that I've caught someone on a bad day, so on two recent trips to the hotel I ate in the Bramblings restaurant again.Bramblings consists of two main areas; the first is the bar area where they serve light meals and bar snacks, and the second is a proper sit-down restaurant with white napkin and full table service. Last month I ate in the less formal area and decided on an omelette - this is a good test for any restaurant the making of a good omelette is a skill that any good chef should be able to master: gently cooked and a light gold colour on the outside with a soft, almost liquid interior to provide a good texture contrast. Unfortunately there don't appear to be any good chefs in this place, since I was served a dense, overcooked concoction with the general texture of carpet foam, with a "side salad" that consisted of some finely chopped tomato and cucumber. For this, I was charged the astonishing sum of £8.95.On my most recent visit I took a gamble on the formal part of the restaurant again, and went for a butternut squash tart with salad. I almost burst out laughing when the dish arrived - the pie, such as it was, was approximately six centimetres in diameter, and about 2cm deep. It was sat looking lonely on one side of a long white porcelain tray with some kind of balsamic reduction arrayed in a jazzy pattern over the rest of it - this is someone's failed attempt at an arty presentation (see photo - compare the size of the pie to my fork!). For the second time in this restaurant, the accompanying dish was absolutely atrocious; last time it was a thin, watery passata, this time it was a "salad" consisting of near tasteless kale leaves, carrots and courgette. That is, carrot and courgette with shapes cut out of edges, again in an attempt to increase the posh quotient without actually considering what it adds to the dish (in this case, absolutely nothing). I can honestly say I've never had such an ill-chosen accompanying dish with a main meal; it's like the chefs just randomly decide what to put in each side dish with no thought at all about whether it will complement or contrast with the flavour or texture of the main dish.I attempted to generate some flavour in this flaccid combination by adding some salt, pepper and butter, but the butter turned out to be a thin margarine ill-suited to the task, and thus ended this sorry experiment. And the best bit? The absolute icing on the cake? The diamond in the sand pit? For this flavourless 6cm "pie" with a near inedible side dish, you will get five pence change out of £14. Now, I don't measure the value of a meal by the amount of food I get - I'm a "quality, not quantity" person when it comes to my dining - but when you get something that's so lacking in any thought for constructing a good meal, so depressingly devoid of any flavour, so cynically thrown together, AND the portions are child sized, you're in trouble. They get away with it because they have a captive audience in the hotel guests, because there are no other restaurants nearby (other than a horrid chain pub down the road), and because they will manage to convince a certain section of the population that wildly high prices with a dash of sauce "artily" thrown across a plate will automatically equal a "posh night out".It isn't posh. It isn't tasty. It is horrendously overpriced. If you want food prepared at extraordinarily high prices with no thought at all from the cooking staff as to what will actually work, then Bramblings is your place. I've eaten in some extremely nice restaurants around the world (the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, the Landau at the Langham in London) with prices that are not far off the prices here, but with quality that's stratospherically above this place. I've also been pleasantly been surprised by the quality of food in local bars with prices well below this and dishes that far surpass it.Bramblings? To summarise, it's a rip-off and I will never, ever eat here again.

First time visit to Duck ponds cafe after a trail walk around the amazing lickey hills. Stopped for a cup of tea before heading off home, Paid £3.60 for dish water I could not drink it had to throw it away. Don’t bother visiting after a walk I don’t normally put comments on social media but I hate wasting hard earned cash

After a long journey to Alvechurch Marina we were pleasantly surprised to find a pub on the doorstep before setting off on a weeks cruise on The Birmingham & Worcester Canal. We were more than disappointed to find no food available on a Saturday evening and to compound our woes a canal side pub that doesn’t allow dogs, What is that all about? Anyway we ventured into the village and found a lovely meal, superb beer, hospitality and a welcome for the hound. As for The Weighbridge NO.

The Sunday roast beef lunch was so small we thought it was a child's portion. 3 very small paper thin slices of bought in slice beef from the supermarket if it weighted 3oz you would be lucky. The plate arrived with Yorkshire pudding hiding the slices with the gravey on it but we then waited for the veg by which time all had gone cold. This was a complete Faulty tower. You couldn't make it up. Will certainly not be going back. And £18 for a cheap bottle of wine. NOT A PLACE TO VISIT.

We have been using this venue for ages and it never fails to please. Some time since our last visit and now under different management but good and service were as good as ever. We understand that hospitality is suffering and the menu now offers a reduced choice but no real problem. The only criticism is that the dining room was so cold! Several diners wore their overcoats throughout. We will return in warmer weather. Otherwise five star.
