Amazing food, especially the fish and chips. More of the popular food has been practiced more as the cauliflower tacos were cold and the rice was clearly microwaved.Chips were amazing;couldn't get enough of them ( the chunky chips). Drinks were quite pricey. Pizza was yummy and you were allowed to take it home.Service was great and quick. Overall, great quality and amazing food.

We celebrated a 90th birthday with a meal for 14 in the Signature Room at the hotel. Chloe and the other members of staff looked after us really well and we enjoyed a private room for our party. The food was great - we preordered from the full menu and vegetarians were provided for. They kindly accommodated a special dietary request no problem. Chloe also provided a plates for our homemade birthday cake, and helped us organise a family photo. We paid £85 for the room which was well worth it. Our 2 year old enjoyed the space to run around in. When booking I managed to pay this twice and the staff were already sorting out a refund when I enquired. Good job! Not too sure about the decor of the room- a scantily clad woman picture appears in our birthday flowers photo!

We'd spent the morning walking and had worked up an appetite so the generous and very tasty servings proved delightful in every way. One member of the party chose grilled haddock and the rest of us had different chicken dishes. The staff were charming and there was a calm and leisurely feel to the restaurant despite it being pretty busy. The meals were also great value.

For a special birthday during this testing time we booked this wonderful Bistro for that special meal. Ryan and Freya were fabulous hosts and deserve such praise; nothing was too much trouble and checked that all was fine numerous times. The food was excellent, my husband ventured away from his usual starter to have the scotch egg and black pudding; wow was the word! We had steaks, my daughter going with the chicken burger, all cooked perfectly. Having had the best birthday meal with the lit up pumpkins adding that special Halloween touch, Ryan brought out a wonderful 'Happy Birthday' treat with cakes and chocolate writing. A perfect ending to a perfect meal. Can't wait to return, if you haven't visited yet, give it a visit, especially at Christmas! Thanks again to Ryan and Freya.

Visited late September for lunch not having visited for many years. We were shown to our table in the conservatory which was well spaced from others. Covid rules were well observed and we felt very comfortable. Our drinks were served promptly while we studied the menu. There was a reasonable choice, we ordered gammon and a small haddock. We didn't have to wait long for our food even though the restaurant was fairly busy. The gammon was excellent quality and delicious, served with a perfectly cooked fried egg. The haddock was slightly disappointing as the batter was overcooked, although the fish was tasty enough. The hand cut chips were cooked to perfection, the best for a long time. The staff were very friendly, however we did have a bit of a wait for the bill, probably because they were busy. The prices were slightly higher than the average but the quality was there. We will definitely go back.

Me and my fiancee had a great meal and experience here last Saturday night the service was excellent we were served by Tom,Ryan and Emma. The food was delicious the whitebait was some of the best I've had in ages and the belly pork was mouth watering the house rose my partner had was delightful the only downside that I could find was the draught cider where a better cider could be had like thatchers or stowford press which are good all round medium ciders other than that the meal the atmosphere and service will definitely have us coming back for more.

Here is the recipe for Brackenborough tarte tatin with cherry tomatoes (£14 as a main). Cover a plate with a variety of lettuce leaves and add a bland dressing. Place a 10cm round of thin and soggy pastry in the middle. On top of this add a handful of whole cherry tomatoes warmed in the microwave, et voila! No need to offer any sides. As some others have said, if you stick to basics such as fish and chips or burgers you might be all right at this restaurant but as a bistro it doesn't cut it if this offering was anything to go by. Come on chef: if you can't make a proper tarte tatin, take it off the menu.

Stayed here last night as booked by my place of work.Pros - staff were brilliant, very polite and helpful. Definitely a credit to the hotel/restaurant.The belly of pork for mains was incredible, as was the smoked bacon and bourbon jam.Brownie for dessert was lovely and the raspberry sorbet complimented it very well.Breakfast was very good, although if staff are going to call someone scary (talking about me this is) maybe do it outside of earshot haha. Unfortunately my appearance and size goes against me sometimes, although I am just a big softy really.Cons - field mushroom for starters... the mushroom was cooked nicely but came with raw onions and tomatoes on top which I found a bit odd. Would've preferred them cooked but maybe personal preference. The triple cooked chips were undercooked (how that is possible when they are triple cooked i do not know) with a few of them still hard and not at all crispy.Overall the staff are a 5/5 and food unfortunately was a 3/5.I wouldn't hesitate to come back and try again though should my work book me in, which must be a good sign.

We went for a child free evening meal. Burger was ok. I mistakenly went off-piste and ordered chicken Thai green curry. I have never tasted anything less like Thai curry. Vegetables in clear soup - with no hint of lemongrass, coconut milk, or anything spicy - served with rice. I couldn’t bring myself to pay £16 for it so sent it back. I don’t remember ever doing that before. It was not even an approximation. Early bird menu advertised on their web page is not available. Staff were friendly and polite - just doing their job.

We have Sunday lunch here regularly as they cater well for gluten free diets, the portions are generous and the gravy even though gluten free is by far the best gravy we've ever tasted, on today's visit James took our order, he was very helpful with good knowledge of gluten free and going out of his way to check what starters would be suitable for me. We both decided to have the Lamb for a change, but had regrets when it arrived as the meat portions were half the amount of what we usually get with the other meats and it was very gristly and fatty (which wouldn't have been such a problem had there been more meat to compensate) there was also a small amount of mash potatoes which again is unusual! Wondering if it was a different chef as my gluten free lamb arrived with stuffing on the plate which at first I thought must be gluten free stuffing, but luckily I checked with the girl who brought the meal out who after checking with the chef said it in fact wasn't and offered to plate me up another meal, also the cauliflower cheese came in the same dish as the other vegetables and the gluten cheese sauce had gone on the other vegetables, so on request they sent some separate vegetables out for me! Just proves you always need to be vigilant if you have intolerances and never take anything for granted just because the place is usually spot on with it all, it's always best to check! Hopefully today was a one off we will be returning as usual in the future, oh and we love the points card as well!

We had the confit of duck, the goats cheese bonbons, the venison and the pork tenderloin. Tremendous quality which we've paid twice the price for in the South East. Our kids had the fish & chips and, the mac 'n' cheese. Both were given hearty portions which were high quality. We would return in a heartbeat! Having SALON, one of the finest grower champagnes, on the wine list was impressive. Not your everyday tipple with the Haddock & Chips etc also on the menu, but for that very, very, very special event an outstanding choice. This is a smart, yet cosy, place and, at a guess, a prefect venue for a celebration small or large. The food is not quite fine dining but excellent and imaginative with good service. Putting aside the SALON at around £600 a bottle, some may still find it a tad pricey but breaking through the "pub grub" ceiling is expensive. One of only a few good places in the area particularly for that weekend break or celebration.

The experience has been a little mixed in the past so it is a pleasure to write this new review. I went with my uncle for lunch last Saturday and we both had an excellent meal (fish and chips; Lincolnshire sausage and mash) with friendly and attentive service. The draught cider, Somersby, also deserves a mention - a new one for me and a real treat. My uncle had not been to the Brackenborough before and was very impressed. Have been a couple of times and find the atmosphere a bit stuffy to be honest. Both climatically and socially. If that’s your thing then probs ok but the conservatory extension bit makes the room boiling. And staff all a bit starchy and trying a bit too hard to be posh. Great if the food’s amazing but not so imo. I had Chilli burritos which were entirely lacking in any chilliness, more rice than anything else, stodgy wraps and a weird sweetness to the entire meal. Dined in the bar/restaurant last Saturday night with 2 friends, but honestly thought I was in the playground not a classy restaurant! There was a wedding on in the function room (that's inside the hotel) and children had left the celebration to play in the hotel's Reception area and through the doors in the 'courtyard' area, immediately outside the window we were sat next to in the bar. All through the meal were children shrieking and screaming. Upon going to the ladies toilets, we had to dodge around children running around to avoid being run into. I'm not a party pooper - I work with children all week but I do not expect to have to endure this level of noise whilst out dining on a Saturday evening. We didn't choose to eat somewhere that is known for family dining eg Pizzahut or Frankie & Bennies etc. For a Saturday evening the Brackenborough was exceptionally quiet with 1 larger party (maybe 12) plus a couple of other tables dining. I wonder does the hotel suffer each Saturday when functions are on with noisy children spoiling the atmosphere in the bar? Staff really should point out the reception is not a playground or an appropriate area to play.I had butternut squash soup to start - no flavour; it needed seasoning and it wasn't piping hot either. The Brackie burger for mains, that the waitress said would come pink and I confirmed that was fine. It wasn't pink at all and totally overcooked, making it very dry. So all in all not an enjoyable evening, apart from the company of my friends. Waiting on staff were all friendly and efficient, thank you. Strangely the best meals I've had here, are at Xmas nights in the Tennyson Suite when you're catering for large numbers of guests! Lovely food, hot and tasty!

Having visited two weeks ago and having a delicious two course meal, we couldn't wait to return. What a disappointment! We arrived 12pm prompt with our two year old in tow. We were shown to our table and before we'd even had the chance to settle and sit we were asked if we knew what we would like to drink! There was only one other couple in the entire restaurant, so I cannot understand the rush.Having previously ordered the delicious cheese soufflé, I decided to to order this again today. How two dishes can be so different is beyond me. It was dense, almost uncooked and cake like. Plonked in a bowl, nothing like the beautifully presented one of the past. No walnuts or diced tomato! My partner ordered Scotch egg with dipping soldiers. Oh the irony. It was the hardest boiled egg inside. Like dipping bread in concrete! My poor two year old loves sausages, he hardly touched them. They were like dry old boots.I find it such a shame that within weeks we could have two very contrasting experiences. Unfortunately, I think it will be a long time before we part with money to dine here again in a hurry.

Nice enough resturant.Pleasant helpful hardworking staff, though there really does seem a bit of a problem in the kitchen as the food seems to take forever to arrive, we waited 45 minutes, then it was Luke warm on arrival.Others were commenting with sighs and I over heard the three ladies say, at last. I honestly believe if the food was served quicker and hot, it might be acceptable.

The only thing we were a little disappointed with was the sandcastle brownie it was a bit dry and didn't taste of chocolate but everything else was delicious !!! Will be visiting again !

A wonderful afternoon tea with a very unique and tasty twist. Was very easy to book and changing the booking time and party size was no trouble. The food was very tasty and very filling. An entertaining and enjoyable afternoon spent perfect for a family treat and very reasonably priced.

We had a lovely stay at the Brackenborough last year, which I reviewed very positively in March 2016. Alas, our lunch today was a let down. Prices seem to have gone up (£17 for two courses) but It began well enough, with the souffle starter (although in the past we have been given brown bread and butter with it - none was offered on this occasion). My main meal, however, (Haddock and Herb Fishcakes) was burnt and leathery, and the presentation decidedly off - one of the fishcakes had been cut in half with a knife, so it looked a mess, and had slid across the plate, leaving a trail of mayonnaise in its wake. I pointed this out to the waitress who took the plate away without saying anything - not even an apology let alone asking me what I wanted to do. I didn't know what was happening until I went to the bar, to ask. Apparently a new meal was being cooked but by this time my husband was eating his mussels so he would have finished by the time my meal arrived. A bit pointless when two people have gone out for lunch together... It was only then I was asked if I'd like something different, but it was all too little, too late. I didn't have a main at all. Nothing was offered for the goodwill when the bill came. I was told 'the fishcakes had been taken off because I didn't want them' - but that was because they were burnt!! A very grudging discount on one of the drinks was eventually given by the person I presume to have been the bar manager - 1/2 pint cider (not even the full pint!) - with the advice that 'that was nothing else that he could do'. In fact, the refund was not the point; it was the principle involved. I was a very disappointed customer and a different attitude would have gone a long way to smooth the situation. I spoke to the duty manager afterwards and he provided a listening ear, for which I was very grateful. Hospitality is just that - things can go wrong but it is how the situation is dealt with at that moment in time that is crucial. And my advice, after years in hospitality management, is simply this: never say 'can't' to a customer.

We attended as wedding guests staying at another hotel. The specific arrangements for the wedding were very good, food ok.One big point to note. We spent a lot of time outside, photographs chatting etc. However. There were two people who relied on their wheelchair. On questioning the staff for a ramp they were told no ramp, have to go round the garden to the other side of the building to get back into the dining room, and again round to go back into the Terrace. Not good planning and one the management should consider. In this day and age, there are easily folding ramps obtainable and these should be a must on health and safety grounds for wheelchair users.

I phoned before we took my Dad for Father's Day lunch and was told it was a set Menu: 2 courses + coffee for £17.95 or 3 courses + coffee for £20.95. We always enjoy The Brackenborough setting and the food is lovely so we booked a table. First disappointment: despite the beautiful location/grounds and the glorious sunshine, they only had ONE working parasol/umbrella in the rear courtyard. It was over 31 degrees so nobody wanted to sit in the direct sun but we all wanted to sit out (there were 7 of us). Apparently the umbrellas in the front garden were broken. We then noticed that the rear one had seen better days, being held together with duck-tape & suffering a few moth-holes. Anyway, we were able to sit under the shade so we were fine but it does raise suspicions when such a beautiful, classy venue can't afford decent garden furniture. We went to our table (I had to go in & ask if it was ready.....nobody came to tell us) - second disappointment. We enjoyed our meal, very nice all round. Unfortunately the quality of the food just isn't matched by the quality of service. We had beer splashed on the menus/cutlery when delivered, nobody coming to check if we wanted anything, a bottle (empty luckily) knocked over by a waitress (no apology), empty glasses left stockpiling on the table till the end of the meal, Ice-cream which had melted to cream by the time it was delivered (appreciate it was a hot day but still, if you order ice-cream you want ice-cream), I had to go & ask where the final dessert was as the rest of us had finished ours - again no apology when it was delivered........it was just not what you expect of a place like this and was topped off (and prompted me to write this review) when I asked a waitress about the coffee & was told the price did NOT include coffee. I told her I was definitely told it included coffee, but she just repeated it didn't. I normally always tip at least 10% but I just was not impressed at all with the service so I didn't leave anything. On leaving we noticed a poster displayed on the wall advertising the Father's Day offer and, yes, it should have included coffee! I was annoyed so went to let the waitress know, to which she merely apologised & pointed out that it didn't say that on the restaurant menus! A decent restaurant would have made a gesture to rescue the situation at this point.....a voucher off another visit maybe? A part-refund maybe? Nope, nothing, just a smile and an apology as she got on with clearing up. Shame, this isn't the first time I have been disappointed in the cost:service ratio here. Probably won't re-visit.

We had a lovely lunch here, such comfortable surroundings and we were looked after very well by Tom and Ryan. It was warm enough to sit outside after lunch in the well furnished patio. Totally relaxed after an arduous hospital appointment. Thank you Tom and Ryan just what I needed. And Tom the cocktail menu looks great-I'll try one next time.

Fancied a nice fish and chips, which were lovely. Staff were really attentive and friendly and food and surroundings fabulous. However made a mistake of asking for a bowl of nuts presented on the bar, when bill arrived realised they actually cost me £3.50 !! Disappointed at the cost as when we go to other local venues these are complimentary. As a local business we will warn our customers to be wary of these extra costs.

Visit to the seaside wanted fish and chips, as I'm gluten free I usually struggle. Not here have gluten free on the menu, also curry sauce. We both had regular fish and chips, mine was wrapped separately from husbands as he had normal.Great portions glad we didn't go for the large.

Can't begin to say how bad this pub was, miserable landlady and landlord and the worst food I have ever not eaten. I say not eaten as we didn't get through even a quarter of the plate of awful food we were offered. My husband said the beer was okay but please don't bother with the food it REALLY ISNT WORTH IT.

We went specifically to this venue for breakfast. We ordered different breakfasts and made some changes to one of them with the helpful counter staff. The tea in the tea pot was cold and we took it back for a replacement hot tea pot. The breakfast was brought to us by a member of staff who did not smile or speak. Having ordered extra well done bacon we were surprised to note that it certainly hadn't been even well done. The plates were cold and so was half of the breakfast, the rest of it cooling rapidly. The toast and prepacked butter were placed on the top of the breakfast and we had to use our fingers to try and get them off the top, even though there was nowhere to put them (have they never heard of side plates)? All in all, very poor. Customer care is clearly not a priority.

Had a couple of roasts today which came with free desserts. Meal was lovely, fresh, hot, just what you expect. We was really happy with that.....but....half an hour after leaving we realised we had left a bag behind. Money, cards, car keys, medication, all stuff hard to replace when on holiday. We returned to the Windsor and the lady who was serving, cleaning etc said she saw the bag as soon as we left, so put it safe behind the counter. Panic over. We can't thank you enough xxx
