We went there almost by chance as we were desperate to get out of the cold and grab a hot drink and we gals we did. The interior is very nice, it overly crowded or over decorated and now of the pretentious pseudo-half worn “shabby-chic”sofa and armchairs. The staff are really friendly and very efficient and attentive. The coffee is really good, a decent number of options and combinations without going over the top. The breakfast menu looked delicious and we will definitely go back soon to try that. They had 3 type of home made looking cakes, we opted for a chocolate and olive oil with blackcurrant, it tasted FANTASTIC! with hesitation, one of the best cakes I have tasted in my (subjective) opinion, and you can’t taste the olive oil at all, just a smooth rich unctuous texture without the greasy feel of cakes made with butter or margarine.

No hacer jus gordan ramsey! Estoy sorprendido que no conseguir algunas proteínas más añadido de ambos los chefs como su pelo se caía en sus ojos quizás sombreros son necesarios chef? ? Ella descuento nuestra comida, pero no pienso volver. Aunque el café parece ocupado en el frente/fuera de estas personas no son conscientes de la falta de higiene de los alimentos que va detrás.

The first time I came here for breakfast I had eggs benedict where they spilt the jar of hollondaise sauce all over it, the staff apologized so I didn't kick up a fuss (I should have done because it made it inedible). I came back last week to give it another chance, making sure I didn't order eggs benedict, I had poached eggs on toast. The eggs were cooked nicely if not seasoned, which I didn't mind. After seasoning them myself my friend noticed two ants in the salt. In a restaurant ants is the last thing you want, it just shows how unclean it is. The new branch in Barnet has such a good location and high footfall that it seems as though they're being lazy. Won't be returning any time soon.

I ordered a breakfast and I asked if they could swap the beans (which I don't like) for mushrooms, and was told it was company policy that you can delete an item for free (how generous of them!) but if you want to swap an item they charge it as a side order. When the breakfast arrived it consisted of two tiny rashers of tough bacon with about 5mm of meat on them, 1 sausage, half a small tomato, a little bucket of beans (which I didn't want anyway) and an absolutely tiny portion of mushrooms. Then when the waiter came to do that insincere box-ticking 5 minute check back thing they all do these days where they clumsily interrupt you mid-conversation to ask "Is everything ok?" without giving a toss how you answer, I told him that I thought the portions were stingy, the breakfast was overpriced, the company policy on swapping items was petty and inflexible and the portion of mushrooms was tiny, his answer to this was that the mushrooms shrink when they are grilled (so just grill more of them then, eh?). Anyway.... £10 for this breakfast was over the top and I presume they only justify it by the pretentious faux artisan ambience of the place as the money clearly hasn't been spent on the mismatched car boot sale-esque furniture or customer service training courses. They have their policy on swapping items but I have a policy of leaving poor reviews for establishments where they would rather save a few pence than keep a customer happy.

The new menu is lovely, imaginative and really tasty. The timing of breakfast and lunch menus means you get far more selection, although there are few consistent dishes. Even those keen on an all day breakfast will find something mouth watering at 3pm.. Burgers, hot dogs, creamed mushrooms, fancy egg dishes and the ol' dependables. The coffee is good and there's always a tempting sweat treat on the counter. You can see Ben (chef and owner) and Dennis have a real passion for the food they create and the front of house manager cares about the customers.

The first time I went here was summer 2015, I had a lovely full English breakfast. Since then I have visited around 6 times, I would usually get the the vegetarian breakfast which tastes great. In my 4th visit disaster struck! The waiter took my order and never took it to the kitchen! I saw meal after meal come out for customers who arrived after me. So I asked the waiter and he told me it was on its way. After 25minutes I got up and told the women to cancel the breakfast and I'm not paying for the coffee, she then found my order on the counter, it hadn't even been taken to the kitchen. All she said was sorry, a complimentary breakfast would of gone down better. 5th time I visit, it was 3minutes past the breakfast menu I asked the waiter if there would be any chance I could still get something from the breakfast menu, the reply was No. 6th time got the full English breakfast and it tasted nothing like the first time I went there. Such a shame. Seems to have turned in to a baby crèche now.

As others have mentioned, there's no similar café in Friern Barnet/New Southgate. I often drop in for a quick coffee and Danish. It's just the sort of place I would normally love, but unfortunately the erratic service lets it down – sometimes very friendly and efficient, sometimes totally detached and indifferent. Once I sat at my table for 20 minutes without so much as a nod of recognition from the waitress, who seemed to be on her own at a fairly busy time, and just wasn't able to cope. So I left, disgruntled and vowing never to return. But I did return, and happily the service was excellent on that occasion. In any case I warmly recommend the Welsh rarebit, which is very tasty indeed.

My wife and I have been irregular regulars of Boydens since it opened don Easter weekend in 2012. I hate today this, but the quality of the service and food is slowly but surely deteriorating. My sausage sandwich was okay, at least it was hot, as was the egg. But the sausage lacked taste compared to previous visits. My wife had a bacon sandwich, and that was rather streaky bacon we observed when she went to apply some ketchup as she felt the sandwich was tasteless. The coffees were served in newer smaller cups as opposed to the old IKEA mugs they used to serve the coffees in. Additionally the coffee and the sandwiches arrived at the same time, but the barista was more interested in chatting to the male companion behind the counter.I will continue to support Boydens but they need to pull their socks up. Couple of years ago, you often had to wait a few minutes for a table on the weekend. Not had that issue for a while, Maybe there is an underlying message out there?AJ

I have been here a few times and whilst service is often slow, prices are more zone 1 than zone 4, the place is always cold and you never really feel looked after because you are always asking for missing cutlery or serviettes etc...I have come back because the food is good. However, that changed on my last visit. I ordered the benedizo, poached eggs, chorizo and roasted veg. I specifically asked that the yolks be runny but the whites not at all runny. The waitress told me this was always the case and then decided to tell me how she thought I should eat it, "You should always eat poached eggs straight away when we bring it to you"...um ok...When the poached eggs arrived I noticed that the eggs were extremely runny. Despite my request the whites of the eggs were only partially cooked with massive globules of uncooked egg white dribbling all over the other food on the plate. I told the waitress who apologised and looked dismayed (presumably at the chef) and promised to rectify it immediately. 5 minutes later, with my original plate of food sat in front of me cold and with egg whites dribbling all over it, I received another plate of two over cooked, shrivelled up poached eggs...but NONE of the other food with it. I queried this and the waitress explained that she thought I would be happy with two new poached eggs plus the original plate of cold food that she had left in front of me. Um, no I was not happy with this. So I told her that I would not pay for the food (that I had not eaten) but that I would pay for the coffee. The waitress did not apologise, did not refuse the money for the coffee and instead let me walk out of there unhappy and hungry. To make matters worse, amongst the change they gave me for the coffee, was a fake £1 coin! Which I discovered when I tried to use it at another shop and they refused it. I then had to take the fake coin back to the cafe and exchange it...again with no apology. To say I was upset with the service is an understatement. And now the only reason for me ever going back there (the food) has been taken away.

This place always looks buzzing from the outside . I get the whole shabby chic alternative thing - infact I actively seek these sort of little places out but it was cold and tired inside .Brunch was luke warm and had to go back to be reheated . Real disappointment . Glad they appear to be doing well but staff would benefit from a smile and a bit of customer service training .Perhaps it was just a bad day ...

Working close to here means I worryingly eat in here way to often. It is also a place I 'take' people too as it is so good. I have seen a celeb who forgot to pay last time and not given an ounce of hassle and rarely queues to get into this little cafe. Firstly I am addicted to their hot chocolates at about £2.50. As an avid Hot chocolate fan it beats my old fav of costa. I have taken family, friends and my boyfriend here and none have been disappointed. I have had a lovely chai latte recently and tried practically everything off the menu. I love the decor, outside seating, superb friendly service, interesting healthy/unhealthy menu with its spanish style twist. The staff have always been lovely and attentive and have not changed much since this place opened. Once I asked for eggs on toast quickly and I did not wait long at all. This week someone mentioned the venue is having a face lift soon and the menu will be altered to include a seasonal one so that should be interesting (in a nervous -I hope they don't change too much way). This week I had smashed avo but my favourite is their amazing take on eggs Benedict. The brioche is also really good. I usually alternate here with Monkeynuts in Whetstone on an embarrassing monthly basis with the bf. I tend to try and find the best of everything and compare each new place to that. I am a self confessed judgemental foodie ;-)

Was taken here for a meeting recently and enjoyed a perfectly pleasant brunch in a simple, down to earth little cafe. Friendly staff, a happy ambience, a fairly decent coffee, efficient service - I could have no complaints at all, especially not after the chocolate cake I greedily took away with me. The interior treads a fairly well worn path that has been rolled out countless times and the menu was a bit small but then how many choices does a man need? All very pleasant and simple but effective.

Great home cooked food and pastries. Small menu but everything on it is delicious (yes, I've tried everything!) the coffee is also amazing! Very family friendly, they even have different size nappies and wipes in the toilet. I love the coffee in this place and love going there after dropping my son at school. My only comment is (and that's why I rated this place only with 3 stars) that they do not cover their cakes stands. They are just there, getting dry and germs from everyone who stand above them. Isn't this a health and safety issue? The cakes should be covered to be protected and stay fresh.

There is so much to like about my local cafe/ kitchen. excellent english breakfasts, american pancakes and very nice but quirky items; breakfast burritos and an egg chorizo, jalapeno combo. also worth mentioning the excellent coffee. Some nice items all well cooked and nicely presented by friendly staff. The place has a nice atmosphere and doesnt try too hard with its up-cycled fixtures and fittings. What stops this place getting 5* is the very short menu, i have tried everything on the menu. The dishes are not short on ingredients and but the lack of options stops me going back to this place regularly. I also feel it is on expensive but it never disappoints.

Visited here recently on a Thursday morning, place was busy with the breakfast rush but still found an empty table. This is a family friendly place which i liked as i had my toddler with me they brought over a high chair and a box of toys which was appriciated. The lady took our order quickly and food arrived shortly after so not a long wait. Now for the not so great bits: Spinach on the eggs benedict was very wet and runny probably needed to be drained more, they brought over my pot of tea with no milk or tea spoon so had to ask for both, tea cup looked a little stained so asked for a fresh 1 and found it a little expensive for what it was. 2 slices of toast (for the little 1) Eggs benedict a tea and apple juice was £14 which I found a little pricy considering we are only in barnet not in central London. So although I did enjoy my food a few things let it down. Doubt I would visit again but it wouldn't take a lot for them to fine tune the little bits iv highlighted. So you never know

It must be great to have Boyden's as your local caff. Staff are friendly, customers are just the right side of hipster, coffee's okay. But the food is - sad. I'm from the country - I admit - just visiting, not too flush with cash, not metropolitan - so I think that 9.50 is a lot for a brunch dish. Down here in Bridport our local Soulshine cafe does a fantastic scrambled egg with chorizo on sourdough. Lovely eggs, chunks of deep red and tasty chorizo, nice bread. So at funky Boyden's I chose scrambled eggs with chorizo this time on a bagel and with roasted vegetables. Yep, I'm not adventurous. But here. Oh dear. The scrambled eggs were a kind of deconstructed omelette (a very thin one with perhaps one egg) in flakes, well burnt at the edges and with some bits of beige, flavourless sausage stirred in. The roasted vegetables turned out to be possibly stir-fried but not roasted peppers and some wet spinach. All this sat on a bagel so that was good! Around the edge was a salad drizzled (I didn't think this was still done in London) with a really, really vinegary dressing. Being with friends and not wanting to make a fuss I ate it. It wasn't all that nice. When the waitress came around I plucked up courage and said what I thought. Then I got offered money back. I tried to say no, not money, I'll pay, I just want you to know what I think. 'Oh,' she said and went off to the kitchen. And didn't come back. No comment, no apology - nada. So I thought about that some more and then wrote this. At our table the club sandwich looked pretty dry and unappetising but I didn't eat it so can't say more. The coffee mugs looked like they could do with a good wash. In fact the whole place looked the same. But still, if it's your local you're lucky it's not a chain, eh? But for me the next time I travel 320 miles to Friern Barnet I'll get Sunday brunch somewhere else.

Everything I said in my last review of Boydens Kitchen, I stand by. I do like the place, and the food and drinks are good. Here's the thing... When the Manager is away, the service quality quite literally 'walks out the door'. To get served... You need to make your needs known quite assertively, and not wait for service to approach. Great for the extroverts among us... Not great for those who prefer live under the radar.Shy people... Expect to wait... I waited 52 minutes and left without being served, while my companion on the SAME TABLE was served THREE TIMES !!On the positive... A month or so back, when the flat upstairs flooded and the water came down the walls, and last week(?) when the light-bulb popped and showered glass everywhere, the staff were professional, fast to act and kept the café open and running. Summing up then, good café, potentially good staff. I will be returning, regularly no doubt.

We have been going to the New Barnet branch for Sunday brunch fairly regularly since it first opened. We like the style of the place and have always enjoyed the food. This hasn't changed but unfortunately the service is now really letting the place down. This week we went on Friday and Sunday. On both visits our drinks didn't turn up until after the food and that was only after we had to ask for them twice. Today we were not even acknowledged when we came into the cafe and sat down, despite a member of staff clearing up the vacated table right next to us. Really a smile and 'I'll be with you in just a moment' isn't difficult. When we wanted to pay one member of staff was talking to some customers. There were 3 younger members of the team just to the side of him. None of them came to help us so we had to wait until the other guy was finished. For such a small place, 4 staff members should be plenty to ensure drinks are served on time, people are welcomed and orders can be taken and bills paid promptly. Really hope the management try to address staff training so we can still come and enjoy the amazing pancakes!

We've been coming to this absolute gem of a place since chancing upon it 18 months ago with 2 very hungry parents and 2 hungry, overtired, moaning (but cute, of course! ) young children. The menu reminds me of the best cafes in Sydney or Melbourne (see Sydney's phenomenal Two Good Eggs for a prefect example) - all breakfasty and brunchy, lots of eggs of different types, avocado, mushrooms, breakfast burritos, pancakes, brioche french toast (wickedly indulgent and addictive) etc.As a veggie, it's such a pleasure to have a fantastic choice. My favorites include:* BIG VEGGIE BREAKFAST - toasted muffins, perfectly cooked poached eggs, houmus, big fat juicy mushrooms, soft avocado, nice portion of salad.*MUSHROOMS ON TOAST - I can't do justice to this stonking plate of food! Sourdough toast pulled high with gorgeously cooked mushrooms, avocado, artichoke and perfect poached eggs.*VEGGIE BURRITO - tortilla filled with guacamole, toms, onion, pepper, spinach, creamy scrambled eggs, cheese. Heaven on a Sunday morning! Loads more, but these are my personal faves. Mrs S loves their granola with fresh fruits and yoghurt, or smoked salmon & scrambled eggs, or their wonderful, wobbly, packed, flavoursome omlettes. And our kids are most likely to go for the boiled eggs with toasted soldiers that come served staving up in a jam jar! It's the only place they really eat boiled eggs, so happy days! The staff are extremely friendly and attentive and extra patient for those of us with little kids. Most people in here are couples aged late 20s through their 30s, and usually a couple of tables of families. Not the Bugaboo crowd - more mellow! We often fail to get a table on a weekend by the time we get there - there are about a dozen tables I reckon - so I look forward to warmer months when the 4 outside picnic style tables become a more viable extra option. Or a day like today when the kids are at the grandparents and I can get here just before it gets too busy, and enjoy a leisurely brunch over a newspaper! And I'll probably have to buy a slice of one of their delicious cakes to take away for later. Tip - the Chocolate & Guiness Cake is incredible.

If you like stripped down shabby chic (be honest, it's just cheaper than actually decorating) and a menu of overpriced, self-consciously 'hipster' food combos most of which you could make in your own home at a fraction of the price and probably better, but which nevertheless makes you feel you're wallowing in cafe culture somewhere far trendier than New Barnet, then Boyden's Kitchen on Potters Road might be the place for you. Go. Enjoy. But don't make the mistake of going for a quick bite to eat. Boyden's Kitchen doesn't do quick anything. Living round the corner I rejoiced at the opening of this cafe last year. Rejoicing began to wane when I repeatedly started to encounter the same issues with service. It's not that the staff are unfriendly. Like a lot of cafes in London they are staffed by minimum wage youngsters who are perfectly friendly yet perfectly untrained in how to do anything at pace - from taking an order to making it to bringing it to your table. If this happened once I wouldn't review it thus. But this has happened almost every time I go in. It may be that I go in at the wrong time, which is to say at lunch time during the week, for a quick sandwich (by which I mean served and eaten within half an hour). I can put aside the fact that I don't really like being called "mate" or "buddy" by someone more than half my age (I'm 48) who is neither my mate nor my buddy, but irritation mounts when you wait an age for a basic club sandwich (nothing needs cooking, just assembling - it should take three minutes tops but I'm usually waiting for 20 to 25 minutes) to see the staff drifting aimlessly around the cafe, fiddling with the volume of the music control, leaning back against the equipment and chatting amongst themselves as if at a nightclub, ignoring spent plates and cups and glasses that need clearing. When I go out to eat, even for a simple sandwich, I expect a degree of professionalism/training from the staff of the cafe I've gone to that leaves me feeling the experience was more enjoyable than eating at home in my kitchen. Staff being amiable isn't enough. That's just the nature of young people, even when they're being exploited on low pay. The last time I was in the cafe - and it may well now be my last time - I went with two others and we were left waiting without a word of apology for 50 minutes for two club sandwiches and eggs and vegetables on toast. When my friend complained that his vegetables were actually burned (which they were) and showed them to the waitress, she smiled, didn't apologise, and charged him full price. I've been going to another cafe in the area, Sam Widges, for years for a lunchtime sandwich but Boyden's Kitchen is far more convenient. Sadly, it's service is routinely very, very sloooow. So easily resolved (1. better training; 2. pay for better staff). Such lazy management. Unfortunately, Boyden's dishes (and their prices) aren't good enough to compensate for the length of time it routinely takes to wait for it. Other cafes are available...

Went to Boydens Kitchen today for brunch with friends, at the newer Potters Road branch. The space is stripped back and cool, and has a nice feel to it. We got a seat immediately (I was expecting it to be busier) and ordered. What arrived was varied in quality but overall, for the prices that we paid, none of us were impressed. I think I felt most hard done by of all with my choice of eggs benedict - a halved, dry muffin with two overdone poached eggs and far too much tepid, largely flavourless hollandaise sauce which tasted like it was out of a jar. Without so much as a token bit of greenery or anything to accompany - £7.50!!!Need to liven things up in the kitchen a bit as the food was pretty uninspiring.Service good and nice atmosphere though - I really hope that this was a one off.

Boydens Kitchen, on the Friern Barnet Road is as good as any other cafe in the district, it has an ambiance all it's own, suited to some, possibly not to all, I find it errs on the side of a little austere and chilly... That however, is my personal opinion, and mine is a winter visit. The food was hot and well prepared using good ingredients, the pot of tea for one stretched to four cups (excellent news !) and tasted like a good brand. I do have feel I would like to see the cakes on display arranged under cloches rather than open to the elements. The prices are maybe a little high for a kitchen Cafe, but the quality of food reflects the price. Hygiene... Everything seems to rise above minimum standard, and so I have no particular complaints. I'd prefer to see a fully tiled floor, Painted concrete is maybe taking shabby Chic one step too far ? The staff are all friendly and approachable, service is at the table, payment at the counter.
