Black Horse Pub in Barnet

I went here with my family for mothers day .All the staff were so welcoming and the food was excellent. We had such a lovely afternoon. Definitely will go back .Thankyou to all the staff and complements to the chef for the delicious food.

Had a wonderful meal in the black horse today, sublime fish n chips and a pint of guiness. Thankyou to the chef, proprietor and all the staff! Great afternoon.

Based on my first visit (weekday lunchtime) I found the pub extremely welcoming, clean and comfortable. I had time to kill before my hospital appointment so stayed for a coffee and wine, no food. Manager Amy was personable, warm and extremely hospitable and I watched her greet a handful of customers by first name. The pub is spacious though I'm told they get very busy in the evenings and special occasions.Toilets were clean, spacious and nicely decorated, the washbasin was lower than usual which I assume is also great for kids and wheelchair users. I would say this pub could cater to most accessibility needs. There is a large garden with wooden seating and decked areas but sadly the weather wasn't playing ball today, so I'll return later in the summer.

Lovely Sunday lunches. Largely prepped in-house, I expect - meat cooked how you like it.

Food presentation excellent. Came out quickly and on hot plates. Very relaxed and service was perfect. Have to try their warm cheesecake. Only critism are photos and menus needs update as don't reflect the restaurant.

Have eaten fish and chip lunch there before in the summer. But this time didn't eat but had a couple of drinks with huge bowl of Pistachios (good value at 3€). Very gentle early evening vibe, no loud music, easy to have a conversation, charming bar staff....very comfortable.

Sunday's are fun days , great roast dinners and the service by the girls is exceptional, great customer service with humour and professionalism, we will be returning again and again , thank you 👍👍

If you get Lenny, then you get good beer! The beer, as in proper beer and not the fizzy yellow stuff! Is now excellent! If real ale is your thing, then it’s well worth a visit!

Lovley old fashioned pub in middle of high barnet ,foods expensive but apparently nice ,took my dad here for few pints,friendly staff and a. nice mixed crowd of regulars, defo recommended,it seems the mitre is t as lovley as it once was ,enjoy !!

Great food, friendly staff who were polite and professional despite being short staffed and under pressure, caused a wait for the food, but when it arrived it was thoroughly enjoyable and worth it. Will have no hesitation in recommending or returning.

It's still a decent pub but the draft beer selection has suffered under the new management, it's much less interesting and often several pumps are off. Food prices are also totally bonkers now, even for London. £21 for a Sunday roast beef!

Asked for falafel wrap mentioned in the menu. They didn't have it. Asked for cheesy garlic bread. They didn't have it. Saw chilli nachos mentioned on the board so ordered it. Turned out it had beef in it although it wasn't mentioned on the board. The lady who served was not polite either and made it look like it was our fault that we didn't check. We had to leave in disgust.

Dirty tables, dirty glasses, poor service. Other people were eating food which looked o.k. Outside area needs a make over as most of the picnic tables are rotting.

A Great Pub, With Great People who Drink in it! The Staff are also V Friendly & it has a Good atmosphere especially when they have music in it!

Went for a Sunday roast and it was all a bit hard work. Ordered starters and we were asked if we wanted them with the mains (odd question really!). We confirmed we wanted them as starters. They then brought the mains out for the 3 kids with the starters, with the adults' mains arriving later. It wouldn't put me off ever going again, but won't rush back.

Based on my experience, the service was 100%. The food, 3 Sunday roasts, was lovely. The desserts were just as good. We will be returning.

It does annoy me when you make a legitimate complaint and it just gets ignored. I have emailed the Black Horse, but I have been ignored – I conclude they do not care We had a family birthday supper at the Black Horse on 7th August which was unsatisfactory because of the quality of the food. We had to return one Classic Burger as the meat did not taste right. A Signature Burger was supposed to be well done, but was almost raw in the center. A second Signature Burger was left part eaten as the burger meat was stringy and unpleasant. A chicken wrap was left part eaten as the meat was too tough to eat. Overall the quality of the meat, particularly in the burgers, was poor. One of our guests manages three restaurants in the south of England and was particularly critical of the meat we were served, it appeared to be reconstituted mince. Fortunately, the chicken and leek pie and the vegetable pies were enjoyable. Unfortunately, the young lady whose birthday we were supposed to be celebrating went home hungry and we had to order a takeaway. While we reported our disappointment to the staff at the time, I also wanted to let the management know about our meals, but my emails have been ignored.

The Black Horse benefits from being in a nice setting nearby to High Barnet, but just a bit outside the main town. It is a lovely old building and the outside area is very big and catches the sun nicely of an afternoon/evening. The food looked great too, although I didn’t sample any. Only criticism would that the keg beers weren’t very exciting. Perhaps one to consider improving. Other than that was a very pleasant visit.

My favourite spot to visit to relax or work from on my laptop (great wifi ☺️) - Staff are polite, friendly, professional & service always comes with a smile. The Pub has come on leaps and bounds since it's been under new management - the whole place is looking great, particularly their pretty garden and there is something for everyone; from live jazz, DJ nights to quiz night, sport events & Happy Hour (Cocktails on tap? Yes please!). Their mouth-watering menu never disappoints with a diverse offering to suit all - Sunday roast with a HUGE Yorkshire pud, delish! When celebrating a birthday, the staff kindly brought out a cake (upon request) and made the whole event so wonderful - Overall 10/10 on all accounts - thank you to all of the staff and lovely locals for creating a warm, welcoming home from home - well worth mentioning my dog is as satisfied a customer as I am! Well done guys, keep up the hard work 🥰

If you're after a vibe while soaking up the sun in the garden....kicking it back with a live DJ while munching a pizza from the stove. Great selection of drinks while being serviced from a young, hard working team.

Great little boozer. We popped in for a Friday lunch on a day off. Food was good, staff were very polite, personable and helpful and the pub and beer garden lovely. Would definitely go back.

Had a great night at the Quiz last night (17th May 2023) however within 2 hours of coming home my partner & I were both sick, this can only of been the Chicken Tacos that we shared that came out cold & greasy, at the time we thought nothing of it, in hindsight we should have sent it back to the Kitchen, be aware people, don't order the Chicken Tacos, especially on a Quiz night!

The blonde lady that claims to be the owner was extremely rude and spoke to us in a very rude and disrespectful manner, as well as being very drunk. Terrible customer service. Do not go.

Booked in person for a table for 7. At no time were we asked do you have children. We did, 11, 13 and 17. During our meal we were told normally children under 18 have to vacate the premises at 8pm, we hadn't finished our main course. We were told we could say until 8.30pm. I told the waitress I had a cake for my son. We finished our main at 8.15pm, the table didn't get cleared until 9pm. The cake eventually came out the waitress gave us plates. The another waitress asked us to leave. I was so upset. We were really looking forward to our evening, but we felt rushed and not welcome. I said if we had been told about this policy we'd would have booked an earlier time. Food was lovely, but didn't enjoy my main as I felt rushed. Didn't get to order a desert as we had outstayed our time limit. The manager said they did not have a license for children on the premises after 8pm, so why did they not make that clear at time of booking or when we arrived, we could have gone elsewhere.

Excellent pub restaurant in Barnet. Last week we attended their Start of Summer Weekend. 4pm till 8pm they had a great DJ doing a set. The beer garden was packed. Plus the pizza chief was on duty serving up excellent pizza’s at reasonable prices. Today we visited to watch the Coronation with friends. Another great atmosphere. Good food, friendly staff. You can understand why they were awarded the best pub in Hertfordshire. Well done all.

Just went for Sunday lunch and went to the toilet walking past the kitchen with there door open right by the toilets to see all the roast meats piled up touching each other on the side uncovered and clearly cold to be reheated. A massive contamination risk and food poisoning risk food should not be left out nor touching each other. We complained and left! Do not eat there!

Crispy onion rings are probably the best I've ever had, ever. Crisp, crunch and onion munch munch. I'll be back for them alone.

Respect for BH for caring about customer feedback! I was there for the Sunday Roast and I ordered the lamb. The portion was on the small side but adequate. I found the whole meal just a little bland and underwhelming. The Yorkshire pudding was great but the lamb and veggies lacked either the pop of amazing fresh ingredients or the seasoning to compensate. All in all, not BAD, just not GREAT.

Staff are friendly service good, good choices on the menu only downside there was a service charge put on our bill and I didn’t see anything on the menu about added service charge

Best Sunday lunch in Barnet, if not North London.

Excellent staff and venue. Had a baby shower here for my wife and the staff were 10/10. Food was great and service impeccable. Overall a fantastic pub.

This is a great pub, the food,atmosphere & staff are great! On a recent visit my friend and i had drinks/dinner! The food was delicious but the size of the bowl food was a bit disappointing, it was small for the price that was charged! I only came in for a drink with a friend, i didn't eat on this occasion. But the pub still has a friendly atmosphere & you always feel welcome!

It was good, it was a first time i went there with my friends, food is yummy, only onion rings was like extra oily we couldn't eat, plus gentlemen who were singing were super-duper loud and we couldn't hear each other, all the rest were fine. But we said to each other it's the first time and the last time we had been there. The service was good.

Had a great time.. Very tasty barmaid there as well.. Will be sure to be back

Do not eat there the food is atrocious I felt sick all night from the food greasy who ever heard of a salt beef sandwich being overcooked and on toast was salad olives cheese coleslaw all in the salad and the mate you could not show

Really good food, full of flavour and served quickly. Fish pie - best my sister has ever tasted! Halloumi and avocado burger was delicious.

Super friendly staff and great food made for a fantastic lunch. We booked for 8+5 kids and the table was ready and decorated when we arrived. The host was very kind, shifting tables around , moving chairs to accommodate high chairs - event blue tacking menus to the windows to stop the bright sunlight getting in the kids eyes The food was cracking, even the kids food is some of the best I’ve seen for some time. I would come back for the food anytime and throughly recommend coming back wether you’re a family or couple

Revolting. Me and my partner stopped off for a roast dinner, we called beforehand to check that they had availability as the original place we had planned to go to was fully booked. The woman that I spoke to, who I believe was the manager, was extremely kind and welcoming over the phone until she saw us both and that quickly changed (We are both black). She told us to take a seat and brought us menus, after we had ordered two soft drinks she very patronisingly asked whether we would like to pay immediately or she could take a card and hold it behind the bar.. We were very confused however went ahead and gave her my card and asked the couple next to us whether the same “policy” applied to them which of course it didn’t, and I am beyond sure it didn’t apply to every single other family having lunch there. We were clearly being racially profiled. After eating a below average roast dinner, a friendly gentleman was bringing our bill over to us to which the manager swiftly took over from him and proceeded to be cold and incredibly patronising- she brought the bill and a card machine but not my card .. After paying on my partners card we had to physically ask for mine back before leaving since she had clearly forgotten she was holding it in the first place. We chose not to say anything at the time because we didn’t want to disrupt anyone else’s lunch. But we have never felt more excluded and we will never step foot in there again.

Called in on Friday evening to find they now have a Excellent Pizzeria available Wed, Friday & Saturday from 4 to 11pm (Collection available) We had a freshly made garlic pizza and a vegetarian pizza. Both were delicious. We will definitely call in again. Well worth a visit.

Still the best Sunday Roast I've had in London

I arrived after lunch time but they still seem to serving food. Which looked delicious. I asked for a non alcoholic beer but was also offered a cider which was very nice. A very nice feeling pub staff were very nice and welcoming. I will return for lunch.

Had a Sunday roast here and was disappointed.. it cost £35 , no alcohol for 2 of us. Portions were small and I had the roast lamb which was not nice at all, not crispy, very school dinner kind of quality meat. Potatoes were cold with burnt bottoms. Once did was served we then waited five minutes for cutlery to be brought to the take, whilst meal went cold and then another 5 mins for salt and pepper. Would not recommend and definately wouldn't visit again

Update: new owners and a new lease of life. This has place has gone up a few notches, with everything just a little more polished (including the excellent Sunday dinners and all the work that's been done in the garden). Highly recommended and great to see the place busy again. Original: By far the best pub in Barnet. Gets busy at the weekends with live music, but the rest of the time a great place for a few fairly quiet pints in the garden.

Vastly improved pub since its change of ownership about nine months ago. Friendly, welcoming staff, good kitchen, large beer garden and occasional live music. A really good foundation to build on!

The only redeeming feature here is the friendly staff. The food is embarrassingly bad. Nachos with barely a scraping of toppings had been microwaved the chicken burgers were as dry as a bone accompanied by a handful of fries. The roast beef was as tough as old boots. The presentation of the food was also very poor. Definitely won’t go back to eat here.

if you're an immigrant don't go to this bar, they just made up a reason why we couldn't stay at the pub (this after we spent £120) the plan was to stay until closing, but a guy came to say we couldn't stay there, said that there was a law in England that under 21s could not stay in pubs after 7pm, and there were several children in the place, but when they saw that we didn't speak English, they only came to us, and asked if we spoke English, and as soon as we said that we couldn't speak English, he ordered us to leave the pub, you should have warned us before, when they asked for ID to enter the pub, the other customers were also embarrassed by the situation, I felt very disrespected , ended my day, I thought that in this country you don't have xenophobia...

Phoned to make sure there would be lunch available.Left message at 9_45 to let me know. Heard nothing so arrived to meet several friends at 12_30. I queried not hearing back from them and was told they are not doing lunch on Mondays any more.Young guy very off hand when I asked why they hadn't returned my call to be told there was no one in the kitchen. Everyone hungry and annoyed

Came in a large group and the errors with the orders were ridiculous. Two pastas that should have come with chorizo and prawn were provided with chorizo and chicken. They were taken away but then returned, now cold, and additional uncooked prawns were provided in separate bowls, they were cold and had clearly just been defrosted. Several other orders were wrong or incorrectly announced so given to the wrong person, e.g. steaks incorrectly described, chicken burger brought out as cheese burger. One order took over an hour to be delivered. Replacements were offered but took a significant amount of time to arrive. On an unrelated note, during our significant time waiting, a pub visitor next to our table had placed their dog's food bowl on the table and was allowing their dog to eat from it, and to climb over the tables and chairs. People who did receive the correct order were unimpressed. Would not return.

Visited The Black Horse this afternoon Friday 3rd June. Fantastic artists singing from 2pm until 18.30. Great vibes. Great food and service from all the staff. It’s got to be the best pub in Barnet. It’s always been friendly and welcoming. But now it’s on a different level. So much so I would be happy to send my wife there on her own and be rest assured that she would be safe until I managed to get there.

Nice looking pub with well spaced out dining tables. Shame there was no wine menu as the waitress had to keep going back to the bar to find out what drinks they had and the price. Drinks finally sorted we got the Sunday menu. Ah, roasts with roast potatoes, yorkshire and did I spot cauliflower cheese? I did but none to be seen on the plate. Instead there was green and red cabbage. One ordered sausages, mash and peas but that came with green cabbage and not a pea in sight. I would prefer the menu to be correct as some people dislike certain vegetables and order accordingly. One person ordered a glass of wine to go with her meal but it didn't arrive, so she had to go up to the bar mid way through her meal to find out why it had not been served. We were with friends we hadn't seen in ages and unfortunately couldn't hold a conversation due to the noise of a large party. When we had finished our meal we asked if we could move. No problem. Great. This isn't the pub's fault. Now to order desserts. No one had asked if we wanted anything. Finally we managed to catch a waitresses eye and was told there was at least a half an hour wait. It was ages before she took our order. Thene waited and waited, like we had for the main meal. We were just about to cancel when we were told they were now coming. At this point I will admit we were given the ice-creams as we had waited so long. In short, the meal was fine albeit not as described on the menu, but the waiting was too long. This I understand fully and is due to staff shortages. This sadly let them down. Basically, if you like to know what you are getting to eat, double check with the waitress that it is what it says! Sorry pub, but I'm being honest.
