Black Horse Pub in Barnet

Very unpleasant; I went to that pub there one night during the summertime this year at 9pm and I got there within the time limit but the lady with the brown curly hair who worked there, answered the door to me was so rude; I told her politely that I just wanted to come in and use the toilet really quickly and be on my way, and she wasn't having it. But she'd shown an attitude and walked away; when I raised the complaint, they got back and told me that I was being rude and the staff there had all rights to refuse entry which I told them I wasn't. I'm never going back there again = don't even go there.

Great service, fantastic food, and Guinness is very good.

Love the Black Horse. I had Sunday lunch - lamb rump. Wait for it - melt in your mouth lamb - you have to go a long way to get a piece of meat like this - brilliant. And cooked the way I like it - very rare. My partner had fish and chips and our friend slow cooked beef. All great.

Lovely Sunday lunches. Largely prepped in-house, I expect - meat cooked how you like it.

Good pub lunch after an exhausting week. Ella, our waitress was wonderful and really helpful. We had 3 Neck Oils on tap ( very good) and one coke- waitress asking whether I would prefer a bottle or off the pump was appreciated because I really like a bottled drink with no ice. Our order was fish and chips (chunky ones!), Cumberland sausage (3) with mash, gravy (slightly saltier than I expected) and peas which were done perfectly, the classic burger and buttermilk chicken burger with upgraded dirty fries. We were told at ordering that the dirty fries instead of the skinny ones with the burger would be an additional cost which we were happy to pay. Food arrived promptly enough. Waitresses were attentive without being intrusive. Relaxing time with the family. Good pub vibe. One downside was the smell in the passageway to the toilets although the toilets themselves were clean.

We were at the pub for the Summer Soulstice evening. It was good fun with fantastic music, albeit the music changed later in the evening and it wasn't our cup of tea (a lot of others felt the same). It was a fun evening and all enjoying themselves. The pub and garden were packed. The toilet situation was terrible - the queues and the disabled toilet was out of order - not good. Staff friendly - one in particular, who seemed to be everywhere and doing everything was a lovely lady called Alexia I believe. Such a great person and working very hard. It was busy at the bar. We got the same round in for most of the evening so we knew the price. Our last round of the evening had one less drink in it, but the pricing was the same as the other rounds. Very strange. Not sure if a lot of the bar staff are experienced in customer service either. Lots good, but difficult to query the bill or discuss anything when it was so busy. Our second year at Summer Soulstice, we will be back next year as it's a very good event.

Exceptional service, Barnet Cab! From start to finish, my journey was nothing short of perfect. The driver was punctual, courteous, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the trip. We hired the Gin and Bubbles garden for the evening of our wedding reception, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The staff were so helpful in the run up, decorating the garden for us and communicating very clearly with us. We had drinks and pizzas for the guests, which everyone loved. The garden looked so beautiful with the fairy lights and the staff were so helpful on the night. It was the perfect end to our wedding day and we can't thank everyone at the Black Horse enough. We would strongly recommend it as a venue to anyone looking to host any kind of party, and the late night pizzas were a wonderful addition. Thank you so much!

Found out staff don’t get tips!! Don’t tip unless you pay you server with cash! So bad that businesses can still get away with this. Food nice but not impressed on the whole.

Vastly improved pub since its change of ownership about nine months ago. Friendly, welcoming staff, good kitchen, large beer garden and occasional live music. A really good foundation to build on!

very Crowded with functions on a Saturday afternoon, not very good for a casual drink with friends. Lack of choices on low and no alcohol drinks

Called at 2.30pm to book a table for 2 people to watch the euros at 5pm, was told that was all confirmed. Arrived at 5 to be told they had no time to book out a table as they had been so busy. Was asked to wait outside while they got us a table. The football started and no table had been found, staff were clearly unable to go and tell another table that unfortunately it had been booked but a sign had been forgotten. Their solution was to sit us with another man on his own on a table. Ordered a pizza which took almost 40 minutes to arrive and when it did it was cold and undercooked. Do not bother, very poorly organised pub with bad service. Feels like it needs some proper management as trying to do way too much and failing at most!

The draft ale selection has suffered under the new management, it's much less interesting and often several pumps are off. We popped in on Friday and only Landlord (not the most inspiring of beers) was still on tap, the rest were off. Not an isolated incident either, we've been a few times in the last year and found few or no ales available. Food prices are also totally bonkers now, even for London. £20+ per person for a Sunday roast. It's a decent enough pub but I'm not sure how it keeps winning awards. Our recent experience is decidedly average at best.

I've visited this pub many times over the years and we were so impressed by the improvement in the food. We ordered the specials, lamb chops and a pork chop. They were fantastic. This is now a bona fide gastropub and we will be back very soon. PS lovely beer garden.

Very mediocre experience. Food was ok, wouldn’t rush to go back. Others in the group I was with thought the food was terrible. Good service, staff could probably do with more training however. The lady who took our order was nice, but didn’t seem to know the menu very well. Told us chips have to be ordered separately from the burgers despite the fact it says below the burgers that they are all served with chips.

Live music Sunday from 3pm excellent Jazz band. Highly recommended and seems very popular Visited for a swift Guinness. Excellent 👍🏻🍺

Lovely pub great outdoor space for loads of people in the summer

Disappointed. We had a coffee takeout from a cafe in whetstone and then decided to head to the Black Horse for Sunday lunch. My wife was finishing her coffee as we entered, and we were seated and she placed the empty cup on the table. A young server was very helpful, already served my wife a glass of red wine and was taking our food orders, when suddenly a lady came over pointed at my wife’s empty coffee cup and said you can’t bring you own drinks in here. Absolutely zero perspective of customer service and politeness. We are about to order £80 of food and drinks and she thinks we are bringing in our own drinks? A takeaway coffee that’s empty? Laughable when the server told me she is the boss. So i figured if you can be greeted and considered a respectable customer by the person in charge, I’m sorry but my business goes elsewhere.

We visited this place twice. Both times it wasn't a very pleasant experience. Having paid around £8/9 pounds for a pizza, we expected to receive something more than an 8 inch pizza which took more than 20 minutes to prepare. The staff were also not hospitable - although we entered as a 6-person group with only two paying customers, they told us that because only 2 people were paying, we were not allowed to take a table or a seat - disappointing as some of them don't drink alcohol. This occurred on both occasions, where we were rushed out of the pub, despite it not being busy and plenty of space available. I don't leave a lot of reviews, but the customer service here was appalling and will never visit again. Pricey, especially for the food quality and a horrible experience.

I went here with my family for mothers day .All the staff were so welcoming and the food was excellent. We had such a lovely afternoon. Definitely will go back .Thankyou to all the staff and complements to the chef for the delicious food.

Based on my first visit (weekday lunchtime) I found the pub extremely welcoming, clean and comfortable. I had time to kill before my hospital appointment so stayed for a coffee and wine, no food. Manager Amy was personable, warm and extremely hospitable and I watched her greet a handful of customers by first name. The pub is spacious though I'm told they get very busy in the evenings and special occasions.Toilets were clean, spacious and nicely decorated, the washbasin was lower than usual which I assume is also great for kids and wheelchair users. I would say this pub could cater to most accessibility needs. There is a large garden with wooden seating and decked areas but sadly the weather wasn't playing ball today, so I'll return later in the summer.

Food presentation excellent. Came out quickly and on hot plates. Very relaxed and service was perfect. Have to try their warm cheesecake. Only critism are photos and menus needs update as don't reflect the restaurant.

Have eaten fish and chip lunch there before in the summer. But this time didn't eat but had a couple of drinks with huge bowl of Pistachios (good value at 3€). Very gentle early evening vibe, no loud music, easy to have a conversation, charming bar staff....very comfortable.

If you get Lenny, then you get good beer! The beer, as in proper beer and not the fizzy yellow stuff! Is now excellent! If real ale is your thing, then it’s well worth a visit!

Lovley old fashioned pub in middle of high barnet ,foods expensive but apparently nice ,took my dad here for few pints,friendly staff and a. nice mixed crowd of regulars, defo recommended,it seems the mitre is t as lovley as it once was ,enjoy !!

Great food, friendly staff who were polite and professional despite being short staffed and under pressure, caused a wait for the food, but when it arrived it was thoroughly enjoyable and worth it. Will have no hesitation in recommending or returning.

Asked for falafel wrap mentioned in the menu. They didn't have it. Asked for cheesy garlic bread. They didn't have it. Saw chilli nachos mentioned on the board so ordered it. Turned out it had beef in it although it wasn't mentioned on the board. The lady who served was not polite either and made it look like it was our fault that we didn't check. We had to leave in disgust.

Dirty tables, dirty glasses, poor service. Other people were eating food which looked o.k. Outside area needs a make over as most of the picnic tables are rotting.

Went for a Sunday roast and it was all a bit hard work. Ordered starters and we were asked if we wanted them with the mains (odd question really!). We confirmed we wanted them as starters. They then brought the mains out for the 3 kids with the starters, with the adults' mains arriving later. It wouldn't put me off ever going again, but won't rush back.

Based on my experience, the service was 100%. The food, 3 Sunday roasts, was lovely. The desserts were just as good. We will be returning.

It does annoy me when you make a legitimate complaint and it just gets ignored. I have emailed the Black Horse, but I have been ignored – I conclude they do not care We had a family birthday supper at the Black Horse on 7th August which was unsatisfactory because of the quality of the food. We had to return one Classic Burger as the meat did not taste right. A Signature Burger was supposed to be well done, but was almost raw in the center. A second Signature Burger was left part eaten as the burger meat was stringy and unpleasant. A chicken wrap was left part eaten as the meat was too tough to eat. Overall the quality of the meat, particularly in the burgers, was poor. One of our guests manages three restaurants in the south of England and was particularly critical of the meat we were served, it appeared to be reconstituted mince. Fortunately, the chicken and leek pie and the vegetable pies were enjoyable. Unfortunately, the young lady whose birthday we were supposed to be celebrating went home hungry and we had to order a takeaway. While we reported our disappointment to the staff at the time, I also wanted to let the management know about our meals, but my emails have been ignored.

The Black Horse benefits from being in a nice setting nearby to High Barnet, but just a bit outside the main town. It is a lovely old building and the outside area is very big and catches the sun nicely of an afternoon/evening. The food looked great too, although I didn’t sample any. Only criticism would that the keg beers weren’t very exciting. Perhaps one to consider improving. Other than that was a very pleasant visit.

My favourite spot to visit to relax or work from on my laptop (great wifi ☺️) - Staff are polite, friendly, professional & service always comes with a smile. The Pub has come on leaps and bounds since it's been under new management - the whole place is looking great, particularly their pretty garden and there is something for everyone; from live jazz, DJ nights to quiz night, sport events & Happy Hour (Cocktails on tap? Yes please!). Their mouth-watering menu never disappoints with a diverse offering to suit all - Sunday roast with a HUGE Yorkshire pud, delish! When celebrating a birthday, the staff kindly brought out a cake (upon request) and made the whole event so wonderful - Overall 10/10 on all accounts - thank you to all of the staff and lovely locals for creating a warm, welcoming home from home - well worth mentioning my dog is as satisfied a customer as I am! Well done guys, keep up the hard work 🥰

Had a great night at the Quiz last night (17th May 2023) however within 2 hours of coming home my partner & I were both sick, this can only of been the Chicken Tacos that we shared that came out cold & greasy, at the time we thought nothing of it, in hindsight we should have sent it back to the Kitchen, be aware people, don't order the Chicken Tacos, especially on a Quiz night!

Booked in person for a table for 7. At no time were we asked do you have children. We did, 11, 13 and 17. During our meal we were told normally children under 18 have to vacate the premises at 8pm, we hadn't finished our main course. We were told we could say until 8.30pm. I told the waitress I had a cake for my son. We finished our main at 8.15pm, the table didn't get cleared until 9pm. The cake eventually came out the waitress gave us plates. The another waitress asked us to leave. I was so upset. We were really looking forward to our evening, but we felt rushed and not welcome. I said if we had been told about this policy we'd would have booked an earlier time. Food was lovely, but didn't enjoy my main as I felt rushed. Didn't get to order a desert as we had outstayed our time limit. The manager said they did not have a license for children on the premises after 8pm, so why did they not make that clear at time of booking or when we arrived, we could have gone elsewhere.

Excellent pub restaurant in Barnet. Last week we attended their Start of Summer Weekend. 4pm till 8pm they had a great DJ doing a set. The beer garden was packed. Plus the pizza chief was on duty serving up excellent pizza’s at reasonable prices. Today we visited to watch the Coronation with friends. Another great atmosphere. Good food, friendly staff. You can understand why they were awarded the best pub in Hertfordshire. Well done all.

Just went for Sunday lunch and went to the toilet walking past the kitchen with there door open right by the toilets to see all the roast meats piled up touching each other on the side uncovered and clearly cold to be reheated. A massive contamination risk and food poisoning risk food should not be left out nor touching each other. We complained and left! Do not eat there!

Crispy onion rings are probably the best I've ever had, ever. Crisp, crunch and onion munch munch. I'll be back for them alone.

Respect for BH for caring about customer feedback! I was there for the Sunday Roast and I ordered the lamb. The portion was on the small side but adequate. I found the whole meal just a little bland and underwhelming. The Yorkshire pudding was great but the lamb and veggies lacked either the pop of amazing fresh ingredients or the seasoning to compensate. All in all, not BAD, just not GREAT.

Staff are friendly service good, good choices on the menu only downside there was a service charge put on our bill and I didn’t see anything on the menu about added service charge

Excellent staff and venue. Had a baby shower here for my wife and the staff were 10/10. Food was great and service impeccable. Overall a fantastic pub.

This is a great pub, the food,atmosphere & staff are great! On a recent visit my friend and i had drinks/dinner! The food was delicious but the size of the bowl food was a bit disappointing, it was small for the price that was charged! I only came in for a drink with a friend, i didn't eat on this occasion. But the pub still has a friendly atmosphere & you always feel welcome!

It was good, it was a first time i went there with my friends, food is yummy, only onion rings was like extra oily we couldn't eat, plus gentlemen who were singing were super-duper loud and we couldn't hear each other, all the rest were fine. But we said to each other it's the first time and the last time we had been there. The service was good.

Had a great time.. Very tasty barmaid there as well.. Will be sure to be back

Do not eat there the food is atrocious I felt sick all night from the food greasy who ever heard of a salt beef sandwich being overcooked and on toast was salad olives cheese coleslaw all in the salad and the mate you could not show

Really good food, full of flavour and served quickly. Fish pie - best my sister has ever tasted! Halloumi and avocado burger was delicious.

Super friendly staff and great food made for a fantastic lunch. We booked for 8+5 kids and the table was ready and decorated when we arrived. The host was very kind, shifting tables around , moving chairs to accommodate high chairs - event blue tacking menus to the windows to stop the bright sunlight getting in the kids eyes The food was cracking, even the kids food is some of the best I’ve seen for some time. I would come back for the food anytime and throughly recommend coming back wether you’re a family or couple

Revolting. Me and my partner stopped off for a roast dinner, we called beforehand to check that they had availability as the original place we had planned to go to was fully booked. The woman that I spoke to, who I believe was the manager, was extremely kind and welcoming over the phone until she saw us both and that quickly changed (We are both black). She told us to take a seat and brought us menus, after we had ordered two soft drinks she very patronisingly asked whether we would like to pay immediately or she could take a card and hold it behind the bar.. We were very confused however went ahead and gave her my card and asked the couple next to us whether the same “policy” applied to them which of course it didn’t, and I am beyond sure it didn’t apply to every single other family having lunch there. We were clearly being racially profiled. After eating a below average roast dinner, a friendly gentleman was bringing our bill over to us to which the manager swiftly took over from him and proceeded to be cold and incredibly patronising- she brought the bill and a card machine but not my card .. After paying on my partners card we had to physically ask for mine back before leaving since she had clearly forgotten she was holding it in the first place. We chose not to say anything at the time because we didn’t want to disrupt anyone else’s lunch. But we have never felt more excluded and we will never step foot in there again.

Relaxed polite staff love the beer garden and will come back for the quiz sometime,also loved that the barman added some Fruit to my Cider when I asked
