We go to Bolams food In Sedgefield a few times a year. Even though it’s a 40 minute drive away it’s worth it for the quality of the produce. This time we got 2 reduced beef joints, various chicken meals, cheeses, butter and strawberries. All good value

I have been coming to the restaurant for many years after spending a lot of money in shop . Myself and family were utterly disgusted with the quality of food offered and complained and fell on deaf ears wasn't bothered about customer service. Won't be coming back .

Lamb chops from Bolams have always been lovely and tender, the last twice this year, they have been so tough. I have been cooking lamb for the last 50 years, so don't blame the cook. Won't be buying any more lamb from Bolams.

We decided to go for breakfast on our day off because we have never been before and I have to say I was absolutely awful and my husband didn't feel very well after it . I didn't like the lady using the same spoons for everything when she was serving us. I didn't like the cardboard cups .

Meet had sell by date of 17/03/23. The night before I got the meat out of the fridge for Sunday dinner it had a green tint to it and smelled really bad, the pictures I have uploaded don't really show the full extent to the green tinge The smell was that bad when I broke the cling film my whole kitchen was stinking and I had to put it into two carrier bags before putting it in a black bag Complete waste of money and sell by dates are completely wrong. Bowlems needs looking into by environmental health for the standard of meat it is selling

We have just left George Bolam's, after a Happy Repast. Cooked & Served to Perfection, with a Choice that is Vast. The Meal includes Sweet from a Generous Display. The Seating : Less accomodating; However: Spare Chairs saved the Day! Clearly: A Successful Business, Established for MANY Years. Quality Counts TOO, in the Retail Shop : TO ALL STAFF WE SAY 'CHEERS'

After Christmas excess we were looking for something to restock our freezer and have a few different meals. Although the shelves weren’t full we still got some bargains meat wise and an apple turnover for the husband.

I said never again - but I unfortunately called in for some braising steak the other day on short notice, it's certainly not a butcher anymore, it was once, and a very well respected good one, it still owned by same chap George Bolam and his Family. So what went wrong, I don't know, but think it's profit over quality or customer service It's just an overpriced poor quality bulk meat packing shop that also now sells some overpriced fish, vegetables, and poor quality bakery items. Drive another few hundred yards to Sainsburys, all items cheaper and better quality and if you still want a proper Butchers, who haven't forgot that they are Butchers, go Taylors at Ferryhill or Coates at Coxhoe a few miles away. Braising Steak - 10 hours in slow cooker still not tender, not sure what cut of meat it was, maybe like that turkey bacon he sells in café now and again, he has spent loads of money on a new sign, so if you see it you should drive passed it, to Sainsburys or shops, cafes and the bakeries in Sedgefield.

My wife who grew up local to Sedgefield had been singing the praises of Bolams since we arrived from Kent for a short break. In much anticipation and with the full knowledge of some of the awful reviews regarding the cafe we decided to try it for ourselves. When you enter the cafe you immediately have the feel of being in a big transport type cafe. There is nothing refined about the place. Plastic dominates everything. The choice of breakfast is very limited with the ‘full Monty’ being bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, tin tomatoes and beans. The choice of egg is fried or scrambled. One slice of bread covered in margarine is included but tea or coffee in a paper cup is extra. Salt and pepper are on a table to be collected but are still in their plastic manufacturers containers and are grubby and dirty. No napkins are provided but you can pull some blue paper from a container on the wall much the same as you see mechanics use in a garage. On taking a plastic tray to carry our plates the first tray had food debris on it and had clearly not been wiped down. Cutlery was in plastic cup type containers that again didn’t appear hygienic. The food was simply dumped on the plates, beans swam in with the very liquid tomatoes. The sausage was not what I recognise as a sausage, it was something between a savaloy and a salami with a peppery taste. The single rasher of bacon was fatty and anemic looking and the mushrooms were tinned not fresh. The black pudding to be fair was nicely cooked and soft and the fried egg was OK but the scrambled egg was dry and shaped like a brick. My wife spoke to the manager to point out that the quality of the food was poor and mainly inedible however he was completely disinterested stating there was nothing wrong with the food. Considering the wide range of produce available in their own store right next door, the sub standard food used in their cafe is unbelievable and clearly shouts profit is the master. Because of the poor experience and attitude of the staff we chose not to give our custom to the food shop which looked to have a very varied and wide choice making the poor food in the cafe an insult. Ignore the poor reviews at your peril (as we did). Three customers who entered the cafe left immediately having seen the food served to us

Can say nothing positive Staff looked totally bored talking to other members when serving .Fruit n Veg terrible rotten strawberries black bananas should not be on sale Store appearence grotty and in need of a good clean and lick of paint. Went for the weekly shop consisted of chicken beef sausages and pork two days later everything including the bread went off 3 days before the use by date £80 down for me not to get to eat anything the sausages where off and smelled horrid the day after I purchased them.

Very disappointed with meat purchased, sliced beef had strange smell and aftertaste, binned with stamped date 6/9/23. Bought 8/9/23, disgusting should have not been on sale. Sliced ham very poor quality with lots of fat compared to previous purchased. Hopefully topside is better, last of my Bolams purchases.

We've recently moved back into Sedgefield 2 years ago, after living in South Yorkshire for over 20 years, we've used and always had used George Bolam Butchers since the owner started the business in his small butchers shop in Ferryhill Station. But we've noticed a sad decline since we've been away, both in the quality of the meat and the many other items they sell now, also a vast increase in the pricing of those item. We've certainly used it less since we returned, owing to the poor quality mainly, however as we can walk to the shop we still pop in for a few things, but at the current time both the quality and cost of their produce it's just not worth it. George Bolam butchers it certainly isn't now, it's George Bolam packed meat company, everything pre packed priced accordingly, to maximize his profits, can't even get cold cut meat cut anymore or weighed out peace pudding. So there is a big staff reduction owing to this obviously, who unfortunately now all seem miserable in their jobs, we've seen happy people working in Lidl and Aldi, and it never used to be like that. Reason I've reviewed this today, and won't be shopping there in future is my canteen experience this morning on the 6th of July, just came back from our holidays so popped in for some milk and bread. Though I'd get a bacon and sausage sandwich save cooking at home, only me and 2 workman in the canteen, they'd ordered 2 breakfasts which sadly didn't look like they used to, however thought you can't get a bacon sausage sandwich wrong, it's a butchers after all. I was wrong asked to put sauce on before they wrapped it, sausages looked like poor catering ones and bacon was like a slice of cold meat, asked cook fellow what it was "turkey bacon", "so not pork then you know from a pig", no "turkey bacon" as Mr Bolam had told them to do, I told them if it's not bacon I don't want it as I didn't order turkey. As I was leaving one of the workmen brought his plate back, with hair on it, so sorry George be last time I'll be filling your pockets, you and the family have lost all sense of what Bolam name used to be, and they are plenty of better cafes, better bakers and quality cheap local butchers than Bolams, plus Sainsburys 500 yards way cheaper than you.

Great deals to be had in food. Always a wide range of meats, fruit and veg and cakes and a very good cafe/restaurant with well priced and huge servings

A friend and I, came for shopping initially but decided to have lunch first. The food was excellent, where else can you get a full meal with a pudding for under £15 these days? A cup of coffee or tea is £1.20 yes its in a cardboard cup but you do pay separately unless you buy with your dinner but you must produce your receipt to prove it.. The staff are friendly and polite, they even welcome my assistance dog into both the restaurant and the shop without asking for id, which i carry. Now going on a regular basis for meat etc as cheapest around for miles.

Fruit, veg, bakery and meat all looked nice and fresh, good quality could have spent a fortune. One of the butchers, a young lad was really helpful and friendly and pointed us in the right direction when we couldn't find something but jeez the lasses on the tills, I'd stick them out the back somewhere instead of inflicting them on customers. The first one rudely told us to go to another till no idea why, at the other till they stood talking to each other didn't even look in our direction, tried to ask for a bag but was cut off, literally threw our items through the till it's a wonder they didnt land in the car park but luckily then slammed a bag down too, barked the price at us, no receipt and didn't dare ask for one, for some strange reason we said thank you, completley blanked again. Yes would recommend the products huge range, can't imagine anyone coming away without something BUT prepare yourselves at the checkout!

First time visiting via a friend recommendation regarding decent prices on their Tomahawk steak. On arrival it was an icy morning, alot of black ice in small carpark, no grit down, so it was a struggle. On entering not best first impressions very dirty flooring etc, for a place selling meat and veg out on counters you'd expect a bit more cleanliness, we had arrived for it opening too, so you'd think things would be cleaned night before, 3* is for the selection of products, especially meat and veg, staff to me are very unwelcoming, young lady serving on cake and pie counter and older lady serving at the cash desk (a smile and a conversation wouldn't go a miss) looking you up and down, saying what do you want instead of can I help you, to me not a nice attitude, we drove quite a distance to check it out too, won't be coming back.

Had to do some festive shopping sainsburys and having seen an advert for 'the full monty' breakfast we thought we would go and have some sustenance! How disappointing to say the least! Despite the picture of the breakfast showing 3 sausages, a mound of bacon, 2 eggs and fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and black pudding, the reality was somewhat different! I don't like mushrooms and it wasn't fresh tomato it was tinned so I opted not to have them. No alternative was offered. The lady serving us was remarkably miserable and looked at us like we were an inconvenience when we arrived. The breakfast I was presented with was 1 sausage 2 rashers of bacon, black pudding and beans with a slice of nice farmhouse bread, ruined with a thick layer of cheap margarine. The coffee was self serve so you had to do this yourself, which would have been ok if it had been a decent coffee offering, a maching with Latte or cappucino choices for example but it was literally tupperware with teabags, instant coffee some milk and a hot water caddy. The price for this experience was a whopping £5.80! Think it's safe to say we won't be returning!

Went shopping in George Bolams butchers shop and bought some lover joints of meat. Thought we'd try the restaurant for breakfast as friends of ours had said it was lovely. OMG. I cannot believe how bad the breakfast was. Bacon over cooked and looked like some of it was from yesterday's menu. The sausage tasted horrible and it was just to say luke warm. The beans were cold. The black pudding tasted nasty, was as hard as rock and dry as sticks. The mushrooms were just to say luke warm and there were egg shells (more than one piece) in the scrambled eggs. The tea & coffee are served in paper cups in the restaurant. The milk is served in open jugs on the counter next to the till and the serving area and the semi skimmed milk also had floaters in. I complained and ask to see the manager. She eventually came to the till and refunded me for both breakfasts without even talking to me or even finding out what the problems were. No refund on the tea though as we didn't complain about the tea. She walked straight out of the restaurant and left the food in that condition without ever checking anything 😒. Unbelievable to be honest and I'll never eat in that restaurant again. Eat there at your own peril 🤢 Had to give 1 star as had to fill in all fields for TripAdvisor. Otherwise I'd of not rated it at all.

Called in on Wednesday last week with my daughter and grandson. First time I've used the restaurant. My daughter had steak pie, my grandson had lasagne and I had cottage pie (the man serving didn't think there was enough mince with my cottage pie so added some from the mince and dumplings. All three meals were extremely tasty and the quantity is amazing. There was no room left on the plate. They stop serving at two and the later you get there the less choice there can be. This is comfort at it's absolute best. There is a wide choice and it all looked good. You also get a dessert with the main course. Would definitely go again. Combine this with the food available in the shop itself and you will leave with more than you budgeted for. The pies in the bakery, especially the steak and stilton are all delicious. The steak and stilton is really good if you warm it back up before serving.

I often buy the pastries and cakes in the shop which are fine. The restaurant is disappointing....the seating is uncomfortable, more like a factory canteen......we ordered a liver lunch, my friends was OK, mine was tough and uncooked......sent it back but the replacement was not much better........for a renowned supplier of meats, that was not up to standard. Would hesitate to eat there again.

for value for money you cant get any better then G bolams, £12,50 for roast beef and pork dinner (3 good slices of both meats) and mince and dumplings both with veg. then sponge and custard and a coffee and tea. for that price you cant go wrong, staff all nice and pleasant, often get Mr G Bolam going round the restraunt and shop making use all is well

Never again , maybe arrived at 1.45. No choices, finished up with the last portion of steak pie, which wasn’t to bad, but the veggies where cold and stodgy, the whole meal was really poor quality, my last visit was about a year ago, which we enjoyed, very low standards today , won’t be returning.

We usually visit the shop around once a month on a Saturday, this time we went on a Friday. What a difference in staff, the lady on the deli didn't say please or thank you and had a horrible manner, then at the cash out the lady was exactly the same, her manner was disgusting. It will be interesting to see what the staff are now on my next visit, hopefully with some manners. How on earth these ladies get jobs serving the public is beyond me.

Came here from Newcastle I have 2 shops stick up on meat chicken etc every few months took my mam 81 she decided to have dinner I only got coffee she had full roast the lady gives u carton cups 4 ya drinks and u make ya own coffee i went to get mams tea hot water and a tea bag the lady said in a nasty tone have u payed 4 that ! Excellent value for money on all fresh veg and meats. Hot food snacks like pie and peas pasties and fresh bread and buns. Restaurant is again value for money with the roast dinner and sweet for u see five pounds. Well worth a visit Steve

When I first visited, I thought the fruit and veg selection was brilliant however they didnt keep for long once I got them home. The chicken I got tasred of vinegar and couldnt eat it and the pork steaks didn't taste right not sure if this was defrosted or fresh meat.

been here a few times to buy meat for freezer great selection of meat at great prices the lamb is a favourit of ours also great choice of fresh fruit and vegtables also a great selection of freah bread honey and dairy products.

Family run business. Have visited several times and carvery has always been great with huge portion sizes. So much so there is never any room for the tempting puddings. Well worth a visit.

Bacon hard and dry, sausage tasteless, fried egg like rubber, black pudding crisp and you have to make your own tea. It was like eating in a bad works canteen. Definitely won't be back.

We went to Bolams for 1st time. We visited the shop, we found it very good. The shop was very full but getting serviced at tills didn't take that long. The we had asked a member of staff were the cafe was, she told us that the cafe isn't open week leading up to Christmas. So we will come back again to the shop and to visit the cafe.

The dinners are unbeatable if you're not bothered about stylish surroundings as the restaurant is like a canteen but the food is lovely if you like traditional English dinners. The shop is really cheap with a fish counter, deli, cooked meat. The cake stand is superb also selling sausage rolls and pies. Try the caramelized onion sausage rolls. The have an animal food section and an eggs stall, also selling duck eggs.. it really has a good selection of food and much cheaper than the supermarkets but it's very very busy over Christmas.

The place is full of every cut of meat. Loads of cheeses, cakes, take away meals and bread. I defy anyone to get out without finding something to buy. We visited this for the first time and we will be coming back. My husband said that his steak pie was the best he’d ever tasted and my meringue was so good, I want to go back now.

Called into this establishment for a take away sandwich when asked assistant for my order she said I'll have to get more lettuce on her return she started ripping into it and placing it in my husband's sandwich without washing the vegetable and not changing her disposable gloves so I contacted customer service manager which I was very impressed with how promptly she contacted me about this issue and that this was dealt with. Went and got some meat etc for a family barbecue was great, also bread and cheeses was a great selection to choose from. Highly recommend it.

Everything you could need is available in the supermarket, from fresh fish, meat, cold and hot sandwiches, eggs, bread and much more, excellent prices too!

The choice and cost of meat in Bolams is phenomenal, so cheap and so much choice, I always visit to stock up the T-bone Steaks and half the price of all Supermarkets. I love the selection of FISH you can get too especially the Claws. Great for Barbecue supplies, Brilliant Butchers and right on the Doorstep

Lovely quality meat and really nice fruit, veg, pastries and other produce too. I would also suggest popping next door to cafe too, fresh home cooked food , huge portions, with a pudding for about £5! It’s canteen style not posh but lovely food.

Doesn’t even deserve a 1 just paid over £5 for this disgusting plate full of vile food . Looking on the bright side the hair was free.

We love visiting this place. Don't be fooled by the canteen like setting. The food is great and they have a good selection of meals. Portion size is set at the very good eater level so don't eat before you go. They are only open day time.

Solid high quality food in café surroundings. Don't go for 'date night' but don't go just wanting a snack - portions are huge and prices are rock bottoms. Cannot recommend highly enough. Mince and Dumplings is off the scale.

The full monty restaurant - Cannot fault it! Cheap, cheerful and very tasty! Takeaways are massive and delicious!

Probably the best value cooked breakfast around Teesside. Its not fancy but it is very tasty. Afterwards you can pick up fruit, veg, cheese and of course any cut of meat you could probably think of :-)

Fantastice prices and very large portions. Good selection of plain british food i.e. mince and onions, dumplings etc. Also good selection of puddings.

Good old fashioned works canteen/ school dinners meals!
