Fortunately we had a £25 gift voucher. How can a coffee shop justify £29 for 2 x coffee, cake and a sandwich? The food was good but only 2 choices of sandwich? We had to ask to get the table cleared. We asked for decaffeinated coffee but only later we realised they had given us regular coffee and had a very bad night's sleep.

A Cambridge classic that’s fallen from grace - Tatler effect/resting on their laurels, one can say. Very loud music and cramped space—want a subdural hematoma and ready to be actively discriminated against since you’re above 5’3? Try using their inaccessible loos! Pastries are mediocre — guess what, you’re in Paddington station in London for the expected prices. Sorry did I say loud music yet? Couldn’t remember my own thoughts over their loud, mediocre selection. One to avoid if you value your senses.

Best oat flat white I think I’ve ever had. I’ll dream about this coffee. No sugar needed. Comes in a very small cup so feels doable to have a second coffee after (or before if journeying into Cambridge). Cost: £4.30 I read the baristas are trained for 6months and if that’s true, it shows. It also took a few minutes for it to come out, they really take their time. I lovvvve the vibes here. Inside has a chill, indie, boho feel with candles, sanded wood furniture, and beautiful art and oil paintings. I took my coffee to go but this is a great atmosphere to dine in and make art, write, journal, be creative. Cant wait to come back! I also want to try the potion, their take on a non caffeinated chai latte. And maybe a pastry.

Pretty average and on the expensive side. Nice setting and there is seating upstairs as well. The cinnamon bun wasn’t too moist and tasty, nothing to write home about. The latte was actually quite disappointing given the good reviews of the place - mostly tastes of milk and lacks any distinctive coffee taste.

All of the coffees that came out looked incredible - super clean latte art which tells me they know what they’re doing! I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk (an industry standard) and my coffee didn’t look appetizing at all (see picture). The first one I send back because it was boiling hot, which tells me they overheated the oat milk. I asked for another one, which they kindly gave, which looked the exact same. The coffee itself wasn’t bad but didn’t taste interesting or even had a distinctive flavor profile. I think as a barista you should be able to properly steam and pour oat milk, but I give 3 starts because all the other (cow milk) coffees that came out looked a lot better

We had a flat white and an iced latte, both of which were incredible and just the way we liked them. However, I noticed small flies flying around the shop. We initially planned to sit downstairs, but the number of flies was too much for me, so we moved upstairs. We ate half of a croissant and then realized there was a fly on it. We informed the staff, and the staff member apologized and offered us another pastry or coffee. We opted for the coffee. She handled the situation with kindness, which we appreciated. However, I felt that if there were a significant number of flies around the shop, something should have been done about it. The photo I posted of a wall with flies was taken upstairs, where the situation wasn't as bad, but imagine five times more of these in a smaller space while you're trying to enjoy your coffee downstairs. It's not exactly pleasant. Lastly, there were four ladies working downstairs. They weren’t very busy, yet no one cleared the dirty cups and plates on our table from the previous customers until our coffees arrived.

If this is Cambridge’s best coffee shop, then poor Cambridge. Called in to buy some ground espresso coffee. There were only two choices of beans and I chose Hard Lines coffee. The girl serving was quite grumpy throughout the transaction and I made the mistake of asking her if they used a burr grinder. She didn’t know what that was, which surprised me. The hard lines coffee was £15 per 250g, so not at the cheap end of the spectrum. Tried the coffee when we got home and we have agreed as a family, it’s the worst coffee we’ve tasted. So, Bould Brothers is not great for service, staff knowledge or coffee quality. So, I really can’t understand how it gets good feedback at all.

From the moment I walked in, the beaming smiles and welcome I received made me feel at ease immediately. I was expecting slightly pretentious ‘artisan’ arrogance (its a UK top 50 coffee house featured in Tatler and Vogue) but what I got was a relaxed, warm and seemingly very genuine ‘hi there, how are you, how can I help’?…… So many places underestimate the power of this basic human kindness and customer service. Great coffee (goes without saying and the reviews don’t lie!) but the welcome is what really sold it to me.

I then consoled myself by buying a cinnamon roll for myself and an almond croissant for my wife- both pastries were as dry as a dog biscuit and were put in a nearby bin - with hindsight we should have fed them to pigeons so as not to waste them. To rub salt into the wound it’s extortionate and two dry pastries cost about £8. I shall never return.
