Bottle & Glass Inn in St. Helens

First time ever been ,best book ahead for a table as we got lucky. Lovely meals and great place to eat,even got a pudding. Will definitely be returning again.

Great service, nice location but our Sunday visit was a big let down on the food. £170 spent on table for four. Four reasonable starters followed by two very poor mains, one a sunday roast and the other a trio of seafood. The latter being smaller than the starter but was one of the most expensive items on the menu. Roast dinner was a very poor effort indeed, pale hard roast potatoes not least of its failings. The two beef cheeks were OK, under seasoned but edible but accompanying veg not great. Food wise the only highlight was the small serving of bakewell tart. Saving grace were the serving staff who were absolutely lovely. I've not been to the pub for a couple of years and expected its former standard. Hopefully this Sunday was a one off bad day. Will check the reviews.

Dirty table, dirty plates, very average food, not piping hot. Wouldn’t recommend & won’t be returning.

Lovely meal 2 soup.starters were a little warm sent back no problem 2 more came roasting hot lovely service. 2 mains were spot on . 3rd visit will be back . Trying Sunday roast next time

Four of us went in for our usual drinks and a catch up, and as always were looked after by the staff, I have been going in for a while and the atmosphere had gone a bit down in the dumps feel but I am happy to say it seemed to be back with all guns blazing this last time.

Great family meal on New Year’s Day. Waiter Olly was very friendly and gave good advice on the menu. It was very busy but they did a great job serving good food quickly

The bottle and glass is one of my regular pubs and never fails to let me down. We have been for multiple meals this December and has been an amazing experience each time. Want to say thankyou to Ella for the servuce she deivers. Happy New year to the whole team!

We visit regularly for drinks and the odd snack and always well looked after. The staff are very friendly. My only complaint is that the wine is expensive compared to other Green king establishments who sell the same wine for less

One of many amazing visits to the bottle and glass! The staff are always so welcoming and the food is always amazing. We have our favourites but there is so many good options to choose from that we are never disappointed whatever we choose.

My 3 year old grand daughter sally was kept busy with the curing books and surprise read book. It meant that we could concentrate on the lovely food. Both vegetarian and gluten free were catered for and the food was hot and delicious. The hot salmon starter was amazing and the steak with peppercorn sauce cooked perfectly. The Christmas lunch had the veg option and it was a great experience. The waitress was very happy and helpful. We will be back next year! Thank you for making our day .

We had Christmas lunch here this year. It was fantastic. The food , the service, everything about it was incredible. The whole team of people were incredibly professional but polite and could not do enough for us. Well done to all in particular our waitress who’s name was Jayne ( thanks for Making our Christmas Day extra special) to be honest I’m not the biggest fan of eating out on Christmas Day but I’d go here every year because it really was that special. ! A big thanks to all you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Happy new year ! 🥳

Great value, service and food on boxing day

Been many times but sorry this afternoon I took my in-laws who are in their 80s for pre Christmas drinks and a bite to eat....it was that cold in there you couldn't enjoy your drink....the food we got 2 sharing platters which we ended up leaving most of it.... just not nice.... very disappointed...we spent a lot a money this afternoon.... sorry will not be returning 😔

Lovely breakfast with Santa this morning at The Bottle and Glass. Our third year. Santa was super jolly and all the staff lovely. Strongly recommend 👍

We were served by Ollie, lovely guy and made sure we were well looked after. We went for my Dad's birthday and had a lovely meal, well cooked and delivered quickly! First time going to the Bottle and Glass after recommendations, definitely will come again!

Pub is cosy lovley. Staff really nice. But twice now ive bern and food awful. 1st time let it go as bad day. But 2nd time lumpy gravy. Cold veg. Awfyl couliflowet cheese. Nesrly gagged. Christmas lunch menu. Hard spuds turkey dry. I spent 88 pounds on 3 meals. I wont ever go again .shame cos pub is really nice

Regular visit, food was very good as usual, much better than average pub restaurant, service was fine.

Had to wait for table to be prepared. Ordered a Sunday dinner, food was pretty cold, and not a good variety roast potatoes were hard and dry and not much gravy. X4 booked and all of us not really impressed with the quality of food and could tell it was prepared from frozen and not fresh wouldn’t return for Sunday roast again and very overpriced for what you got. I would have been happy to pay around £10 per meal but not £17 -£19 per meal

Ordered sirloin steak medium rare. Steak arrived massively overcooked with a few insipid chips and a hideous salad - won’t go again

The Bottle and Glass used to be a good place to go, but now you can't even get through to a member of staff. Even after saying, "Speak to the restaurant," they just put the phone down. They have now lost a large, regular booking due to a lack of service and not answering the phone to anyone.

Busy x but disappointed this time

This pub is relaxing and welcoming. The food is excellent and varied. The staff are friendly and will give an opinion on the best on the menu. Our waitress Cerys is a friendly, pleasant and advised us on the main menu and dessert, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Well worth a visit

Have always enjoyed this place until Saturday, very disappointed now the starter of Pork belly bites (around £8) was 3 very tiny pieces of pork with no crackling! it came with some leaves and i had to ask for the caramelized onion chutney that had been missed off! come the main I ordered the chicken and bacon ciabatta which was quite a large ciabatta with 1 tiny piece of streaky bacon and 3 pieces of chicken that barely covered 1/2 of the ciabatta! When i pointed this out to the waiter even he was aghast at the sandwich and had it remade. This time it had about 3 pieces of bacon alot more chicken , tomato and lettuce. If you are going to charge the prices you do to try and skimp on the quality is a mistake! After being a regular for years now off my list

This place is brilliant, and it's because of Jema, who is so helpful and kind and a first-class professional. If we were to give marks out of 10, it would be 11 , just amazing.

We often meet friends at this pub restaurant because we always enjoy ourselves there. The food is really great and the service too. Staff are very friendly and today we were served by Gemma; excellent!

I had the gammon which I have to say was so tasty and cooked to perfection. My eggs where also cooked the way I like them Gemma was our server who was very attentive. Nick was the chef hat's off to her. A beautiful meal.

Sunday roast with my family . Great food even managed a dessert .

This is one of the closest places to our workplace where you can have a lovely meal so I have been here a few times. Food is always fresh and good portion, staff is nice and the place has a lovely atmosphere. It is a place where it is nice to eat and have a chat with family and friends and prices are good, too.

Disappointed in the food. The brocoli and peas were very al dente. My friend sent the Hake back as it was slimy. I've been here before but I was disappointed on this visit. Service staff were very nice.

How to sum this place up in one word, AWFUL. Think the manger needs to work on not annoying the customer as they are booking in with ridiculous statements like " your table isn't ready" when the pub/restaurant is half empty in a silly attempt to get you to spend more money on drinks. Used to be a great place to visit but we won't go again.

I must confess that it was not our original intention take our Sunday lunch at the Bottle and Glass yesterday. However, our customary establishment had been incapacitated by an electrical fault. And so began our quest to seek an alternative. A member of our party recalled receiving a recommendation for your good selves, so we made our way post haste. Upon arrival we were greeted at the desk by two of your beautiful staff. Despite the already bustling assemblage of guests, you were able to find a table for our four. Taking our seats we were swiftly attended to by our delightful waitress who took great care of us throughout. Thus, the begging of our culinary experience. The drinks and food menus were an adventure of options which catered to each companion splendidly. We opted for a varying selection of your roasts, all delightful and cooked to perfection. Myself, taking the pork which proved to be a marvelous choice. After finishing we were charmed by our waitress into exploring the desserts menu which we would ordinarily decline. The pistachio tart was sublime. Having finished our meal and reluctant to leave the warm and friendly atmosphere we elected to take cocktails in the bar. These were professionally prepared by the excellent barman and provided the perfect end to our visit. Leaving with contented bellies and smiling faces our party unanimously agreed that the Bottle and Glass in Rainford would hold our loyalties forevermore. To avoid an unbearable disappointment we have already booked our visit for next Sunday. Thank you to each and every one of your fabulous staff for a delightful afternoon.

Waited 40 minutes for breakfast to arrive at 11 a.m., given free additional drinks for the wait which was nice. One breakfast was cold, egg slightly undercooked, runny egg white, and the Hollandaise sauce was lumpy and later advised the breakfast should have been hot as it had been remade. This was refunded on advising issues. The various staff members who interacted with us were friendly and attentive. We have been 4 times before at various times of the day and had an excellent experience. We will return, not sure if the chef has changed, not the previous standards this time.

Booked online, asked for a quiet corner table which we got. Lovely clean restaurant with delicious food which was well presented and reasonably priced. The lady that served us was lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. Haven’t been for a long time but will definitely return.

Bit of a joke this place. Only visited three times (including today) and on two occasions there was no food available for whatever reason. Would seriously suggest you check in advance if going there to eat as it is pot luck if there will be any food available.

Recently visited bottle and glass for lunch, not been for a while but usually always had a decent meal there till the last visit; really very poor and no longer surprised the place was quite empty for a weekend lunch. Had a special which was chicken leek mushroom and cheese pie with chunky chips; we’ll to start it wasn’t a pie; in fact it was a pastry case with a cheese mushroom and leak sauce in the bottom, this had been topped with cooked chicken and then a puff pastry top all warmed up separately; chunky chips were 4 pieces of potato wedge skin on, served with gravy. Also served with a few leaves of rocket, a few slices of radish and two dried out disgusting pieces of asparagus with woody ends; salad wasn’t dressed but who on earth serves a “pie chips n gravy” with a salad, really, when did gravy go with a salad; the plate was £17.99; it was a p**s take and frankly poor. Not surprised it was empty, won’t be heading back there again. Used to be ok for a decent enough meal, no longer IMHO

4 times to get a plain burger. Service not the best unless you like eye rolls...

Got there at 18.25 and was given our table that was booked for 18.30. Got our drinks at 18.50 with 2 dirty wine glasses. After asking a girl with blue hair to change it, there was no words said by her, no customer service, no apologie, to shy for customer service imo! Then ordered food. After eating our starter we waited till 19.30. Plates still there and hungry for our mains. After complaining to the manager who looked like a teenager. They then let one of their customers do their fighting for them! (A Karen!) After no apologie off anyone, we were asked to leave. I bet there will be no reply to this, but I urge the owner of the place to look at the cctv and rectify the issues they have. Me and my family will never return again.

I absalutley love the delicious food in the bottle and glass and does not disappoint I visit because it is a short walk from my house and it is dog friendly. The food is delicious the last time I went I got a burger and it was divine I love how it is dog friendly and wheelchair accessible. The bar serves many drinks and it has some of the best beer

Had a very strange experience here today. Arrived at 12:20pm as a party of 5 (fifth person was a baby in a pram, no highchair needed). The pub had a few tables in but not many for the size of the place. A staff member looked at the booking system and said they only had a table at 12:45pm, so we said we would wait at the bar and get a drink as I presumed all the vacant tables at the time had bookings coming in. It got to 12:50pm and we had get up and ask could we be seated at a table to which the staff member looked bewildered and sent us to one of the many tables that had been vacant the whole time we were there. Throughout our visit the pub still did not fill to capacity. Menus were just placed on table with no care or mention of the specials. I don’t think any of the staff could really be bothered. I was honestly so confused as to why we had to wait half an hour for a table (with children) when there were tables available the whole time. Now the food…. I have been here before and the food has been good, but this time was very very mediocre … I had the mushroom and ale pie and at £15 odd was an absolute rip off. Three tiny mushrooms inside the obviously bought in frozen pie accompanied by packet mash that was weirdly chewy and chefs hadn't even bothered to fluff up to at least make it look homemade. Chefs seem to be scared to use seasoning also. Whilst we did get a check back this was done when we had nearly finished the whole meal and took staff a long long time to clear plates. We noticed a few tables had already left before their plates were cleared. Have been a few times but won’t be coming back after today.

Food was average at best. Veggie options dreadful, basically a regurgitation of the same ingredients. We sat outside and people came along and parked right outside the pub rather than in the car park, so literally next to your table. Used to be such a beautiful building but now ruined by horrible white-ish paint on the original stone. Saving grace were the very nice staff. Can't help feeling that could be so much better though. Great location but missed opportunity to do something really special.

Great food. Initially, the service was fantastic. However, I had to go in search of a waiter to clear our tables, and bring a desert menu, and then again when we were ready to leave and wanted to settle our bill, a real shame, a good atmosphere in the bar as it was busy, the restaurant was quiet due to it being midweek, decor creates a nice ambience

Very disappointed with the service today, so much so we left & went elsewhere. Have been going to the Bottle & Glass for years, always great service & food, the dirty look and eye roll from the girl serving at the bar was so blatant, I was shocked. We hadn't booked a table & i asked if it was okay to sit near the bar & if it was bar service, I felt I had interrupted her conversation with her colleagues and this poor attitude was the result. Such a shame.

A massive thank you to all the staff last night who served our party of 11 from 8pm. From being greeted at the door to serving our food clearing away was outatanding. They were very attentive nothing too much trouble with a caring friendly attitude. The food was lovely all hot an fresh an even squeezed in some desserts. They made it a lovely end to a fabulous day of my daughters PHD Graduation. To put the icing on the cake he proposed to her in the Restaurant at the end of the night. 😘😘

we often come here and usually love it but this visit the food wasn't the best we had the roast and wasn't impressed yorkshires where rock hard filled with stodgy stuffing and the roasties where dry followed by the trifle which wasn't very nice either hardly any jelly and lacking sugar .. hopefully it will be a better visit next time

Went here for Father's day. Our meals came out cold, then we got it back hot, the rib beef was not edible, the beef was 90% fat. Child meal was very greasy too.

I visited last week. It is my local pub and I visit regularly. Food and drinks are all fab but I would like to leave a review about how caring the staff are. My cat often follows me to the pub and waits outside. When I last visited my cat had come and when I left she wasn’t around so went home. Ten minutes later a member of staff (Becky) to my house with my cat who had appeared at the door looking extremely distressed. She was pregnant and disoriented. I am so overwhelmed that not only did they recognise my cat as belonging to me but that Becky took the time to bring her home. That is a truly caring pub. And an hour later my cat had given birth to two beautiful kitten. I didn’t even know she was pregnant. I am so grateful xxx. Thank you Becky and the Bottle and Glass.

we like it here. one of the best places for many a mile, although there aren't many, there are a few give it a try, you won't be disappointed

dropped in on the off chance of getting a sunday roast, was welcomed very politely, was told there was a 45 min wait, so we ordered a drink at the bar, within 20 mins we were shown to our table, myself and my wife ordered the trio roast, probably waited 5 mins to get our food, and WOW what a sunday roast it was cannot praise it enough, each meat melted in our mouths, the stuffing was deeee-lish, will 100% be coming back to the Bottle & Glass inn, loved the sevice, stunning little place, what a find, thank you all for a lovely afternoon, I tip my hat 👍Tony & Michelle from warrington. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Lovely pub, plenty of space and fabulous history information. Trio of meat roast dinner had a good selection of food, although it was cold when I got it. Kids starter came with cucumber and carrots, they had been out a while. Kids meals were good sizes and hot. Overall it was lovely but cold food let it down.

The food was great. I was stuffed after a starter of pork & apple terrine, main of steak and ale pie followed by a strawberry and elderflower sundae. Staff were welcoming and whilst busy always checked if we needed any more drinks.
