Boswells Cafe in Reading

Second time we visited and both times food was served half hot and half stone cold. Both times they just put it back in the microwave and bring it out again without a word of apology. Bad food, bad staff, do not go here.

First of all they brought me someone else’s breakfast after I realised they just swapped it with the other person who had my order who had clearly tucked into it a bit😳 But just gave it to me the fried eggs where like well over done boiled eggs the sausages where bad and I had to pay extra for a coffee. On top of this there was no apology for getting it wrong in the first place

Good tasty breakfast especially for the price staff helpful and friendly asked to change the chips for toast and it was no trouble at all

Popped in for lunch on a reasonably busy Saturday, staff were friendly and helpful, ordered cold drinks and 2 tuna jackets potatoes with salad, they came quickly, tuna and salad was really fresh, and plentiful, jacket potato nice and hot, we were asked on ordering if we wanted butter, obviously we did, very amusingly we were asked if we wanted a knife and fork when the food was delivered! We sat chatting for quite a while after our meal as the cafe was getting less busy. Whilst we were there they actually cleaned the loo twice which we were very impressed by.

I had some tea and toast. The toast came already spread with what tasted like margarine. Only the middle of the slice was spread. I would prefer to butter the toast myself, or at least have it spread with butter all the way to the edges. No margarine please.

Best service, great staff, excellent food, very fast internet and amazing atmosphere, keep it up and see you again very soon.

Found this little gem for breakfast while staying in Reading. It is a great stop for breakfast, good prices and happy to accommodate alternative changes to set breakfast menu. The staff are helpful and very friendly. Wish I had found it sooner ❤️

I enjoyed a nice panini here for a quick lunch whilst shopping in Reading. The staff were friendly although my panini arrived with salad - when ordering, I was asked whether I wanted salad and said 'no' but hey, ho - it was quite nice! Your food is brought to your table after ordering at the counter - this seemed to work well. I would happily eat here again.

In Reading for shopping and Brunch. I had an all day breakfast and my Wife had a slightly customised version, which the staff were happy to do. The food was very tasty and the mugs of tea were excellent. I don't say that often about a cup of tea when away from home. This was very good. The tea was served in a mug with sufficient milk provided. Much better than disposable plastic lined cardboard cups and sachet milk which taints and spoils the tea. The surroundings were pleasant, the staff courteous and helpful. The cloakroom clean and tidy. Returned hours later for a topup of tea and a piece of cake.

A delicious coffee and cake at Boswells Cafe. The team were very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere in the cafe was very relaxed and welcoming.

The best coffee bar in Reading, really. I go there most days, and I see people who go there every day. Sometimes solo sometimes with friends.Its so reasonably priced. Its our favourite. You can get the size cappuccino you want, you don't have to one you swim in. They have lovely croissants, cakes and lots of different savoury food. The cater also for vegans, veggies and do gluten free menus. The staff are excellent they work so hard behind the counter and clean the tables constantly. You get such cute little children there too they seem to appreciate the admiration they get. And dogs too.

I usually go to Boswells once I week. I meet my son there. He has a late lunch and I have a coffee or tea. The staff are always very helpful and pleasant. The young man with highlighted hair is very nice. It’s relaxing there. It has a varied menu, from all day breakfasts to jacket potatoes or salads to tea cakes.

staff were fast asf! Didn’t get any of their names but fella with colourful lanyard and girls at the coffee machine were quick & attentive. You got a sick team🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The American breakfast is to die for. Wonderful atmosphere that feels very homely. 11/10

Went in the cafe for breakfast 27/12/2022 22.30 am ordered large breakfast and normal breakfast plus 2 pots of tea........firstly the cups were filthy and after a couple of minutes what was stuck at the bottom came to the top and was floating absolutely disgusting !!!!! the sausages tasted like cardboard and egg tasted as tho it was fried in some cleaning fluid overall the whole experience was terrible needless to say we won't be going there again or recommending anyone else

Have to say any time I have been in this establishment from the first person to greet u to the cashiers to the waiting staff. Absolutely first class the young staff are so polite and always have a smile. The food also is first class . It does bring the faith back in younger kids such a wonderful place u always leave happy. Keep it up team .

Food is very good quality, would recommend if you're not in a rush. The service can be slow especially around breakfast.

Came in for 4 breakfasts during my recent stay in Reading. Was relieved and pleased not only to find Boswells as good as ever but in some small details even better. Mainly, it is the same. The food is simple and reliable; each of the different items on the plate is of good quality, which is rare. They do excellent scrambled eggs (which they're better at than fried). And they do the best fried mushrooms I've had in a cafe--a generous portion, tasting nice. Good, hot cups of tea go well with the breakfasts here. First cuppa of the day at Boswells is unbeatably Zen. Different staff from the ones I remember; but still an outstanding team. Friendly, polite, efficient, smart. The tall, dark-haired, smiling, welcoming manageress who was there on 2 or 3 occasions, is an absolute gem. Very good with old fools like myself and valiantly banterworthy. She, Kamal, and the rest run a tight ship. The cafe is impeccably clean, both out front and behind the counters. Boswells and Rafina are ahead of similar competitors in town, in my opinion. But on this visit, I felt Boswells now has the edge on Rafina--good though the latter still is. It's open more days. It keeps furniture and decor in good condition. Such things count for me. And since my last visit, there's been a marked improvement in customer guidance. The staff who serve you give you napkins or point to a dispenser by the till; they put the milk on the tray for you now instead of your having to pick a jug up yourself; and they offer you sauce there too. This leaves fewer bits and pieces for the customers to rustle together themselves. The servers give clear information about where the salt, sugar, and cutlery are. All this makes for a simpler experience than before. (The less a cafe intimidates new customers, the more new customers it will have. Not many businesses realise quite how many customers are put off from entering their eatery, or from returning to it, because of the apparent awkwardness or potential embarrassment of negotiating its protocols. A big part of McDonald's popularity, in my opinion, is how comfortingly simple they are to use. Boswells are getting customer ease more and more bang on now. ) Much love to Boswells and their awesome staff.

Lovely location but the food was really lacking, small portion, lots on the menu not available and when it did come the eggs were massively overcooked and the bacon was small A real shame.

We stopped here on a Saturday for a spot of brunch. I was tempted by the description of the bacon and cheese baguette which said something like "Bacon topped with melted cheddar" but was bacon (not very warm) with a cheddar slice, not the bacon...

Food and service was excellent. Ham and cheese baguettes are the best I have ever had. 😋. Clean restaurant and lovely staff.

A very nice lunch after Christmas shopping. I had the chicken salad and my son had the all day breakfast. My daughter had the nachos and they were all very good. Especially in this strange times. A perfect place for lunch after shopping.

This is a great place for hot and cold drinks, light bites and more substantial meals. It's got great atmosphere, very clean and tidy and the staff are polite, friendly and very efficient. They are certainly doing something right because they always seems busy.

Había tres miembros del personal en el área del mostrador, todos mirando un teléfono móvil. Me acerqué después de unos cinco minutos de espera para pedir ver un menú, que me dieron. Un joven tomó nuestro pedido y lo recibimos debidamente. Todo estuvo bien, pero la espera inicial no debería haber sucedido. Nos dimos cuenta de que los otros pocos clientes también tenían que esperar bastante. Inusual para que solo haya unos pocos clientes aquí. ¡Quizás el personal debería estar más atento a los clientes! My OH likes this cafe for the Lasagne, salad and baquette which he always finds tasty.I can't say I was happy what I chose, the sausage roll, found it too greasy. Would have liked to see some scones, but never do. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Still a good cafe to pop into, and if just before lunch time, you have a choice of where to sit, either inside or on the front of the shop which is cordoned off.

Paramos aquí para un almuerzo ligero y una bebida como un descanso en nuestras compras. Descubrimos que tenían pastel (bistec y riñón) con papas fritas y té para los jubilados menores de 5 años cada uno. Bueno, las porciones son pequeñas pero eso es todo lo que queríamos. Sin embargo, sí que teníamos dos tazas de té, así que había dos tazas de té cada una. El personal era educado y amable y las instalaciones limpias. El único inconveniente es que solo tienen un inodoro unisex, por lo que necesita una sincronización correcta o estar preparado para hacer cola:)

Found the prices a bit over priced ..the disabled loo could do wth a facelift ..and not have to move highchairs out the doorway would be helpful..

As soon as I walked in I was greeted by friendly smiles from the staff. Every table was regularly cleaned and the crockery, etc. was quickly cleared away. The English breakfast was beautifully cooked and with a mug of tea I was in heaven!

Apareció aquí para un desayuno y moly santo, ¡no vengas aquí sobrio! Comida muy grasosa y salchichas de baja calidad. Hash browns obviamente había estado sentado durante siglos bajo una luz cálida; sin contratiempos Salvar la gracia (y la razón para obtener más de una estrella) es el café, que era delicioso.

Un calentamiento rápido con una capa extra generosa de mantequilla en la parte superior lo hizo atractivo. Los huevos fritos tenían un buen fondo crujiente y la crisis añadió un toque agradable. Pedí un pan extra sin mantequilla para mi 1. 5 años de edad. Repetimos dos veces a la señora que tomó nuestro pedido y dos veces a la señora en hasta. Todavía se sirve con un brindis con mantequilla. Tuve que devolverlo y cambiarlo. El café estaba bien.

Stopped here for breakfast with my husband, we ordered the food and a tea and hot chocolate, 15 mins in and we had finished our drinks but breakfast had not yet appeared! Saw a waiter walking around with two breakfasts so my husband called him over and said 'is that ours'? He said no your number 83 I'm looking for number 2, he then continued to walk around table to table and then gave up and went back into the kitchen, he then came back out and came to our table and said these are yours my colleague gave me the wrong table number!! I said this breakfast is cold to which he said 'I'm sorry I don't understand'!! By this time we'd given up and just took the cold over cooked food, bacon that would break your teeth and crusty beans, have eaten here before but never again, I'd rather go to Bills and pay £30 for two breakfasts.

On a busy Saturday we managed to bag a table which was just being cleaned. We queued to order food and pick up coffee and cakes. One baguette arrived at the table quite quickly but the other took an age, on the plus side both were very well filled and tasty. Coffee on the other hand was smooth but bland in taste and the croissants were ok but again a bit bland. Overall an ok experience but I wouldnt go elsewhere for coffee.

Popped in for lunch, chose the jacket potato and chilli... it was a small jacket potato with a tiny amount of chilli-con carne smeared over the potato to make it look more than it was... only ate half as that's all the Chilli would spread on the potato... Coffee cup overfilled so Americano watery and obviously spilled by the time I got a table.

Visited Boswells with my wife and grandson for lunch while shopping in town. The service was prompt and efficient, Ola was very pleasant and persuaded me to order additional fries and cream on my caramel frappe. Food was delivered quickly and was very good although the jacket potato did not have as much filling as previously. Grandson enjoyed the larger than normal sausages.

This is a great coffee shop, what makes it special is that the staff are friendly and very helpful. The coffee is fresh and hot and the food comes quickly .. would definitely recommend this coffee shop for a break in shopping.

Always love a bit of Boswells and this one is just as good as all the rest friendly staff good food can't go wrong

A busy cafe situated in a shopping mall ,we popped in for Sunday morning breakfast . The usual fayre on offer but disappointed that they were unable to do poached eggs on toast . I settled for scrambled which appeared freshly prepared. My OH was more than happy with his full English

A lovely restaurant to relax for a hour or so. Friendly staff with a polite attitude made to feel welcome. With tables well spaced out we were able to stretch our legs out and enjoy there free wifi.

The shop seems a bit run down from the outside but it's actually quite a nice place to go. We had a drink in here with our kids and the value was great.The staff are welcoming and good at their jobs.

I have been here for lunch a total of 3 times mosquitoes. Every time I pay over 6/7 pound for very average food. I ate chicken which was very dry, had to use mayo to make it easier and tastier in my sandwich/baguette both times.Today I got potato and leak soup, it was tasteless. So disappointing as this is such a classic combo-added a whole sachet of salt, made little difference. To go with it I got their chicken bacon and mozzarella toasted sandwich, again chicken was so dry, even with melted cheese. Very much a let down.For a deli-counter they could really do with lowering their prices and bring up the flavours.

Everyone's taste is different but I thought the sausages here were horrible. Over powered with spices, so didn't enjoy my breakfast.I gave it 2 stars as service and the rest of the breakfast was ok .

The place is ok, but the food has it issues. Sometimes it is lovely and others only ok. Alway gd with drinks. Great place to have a break from shopping and have a drink. Prices not too bad.

I was in Reading Broad Street Mall having my shoes repaired while I waited so went into Boswells for a cappuccino. Service was good and the coffee nice and strong. Half an hour later I collected my newly heeled shoe.s

When shopping in the Broad St Mall I often pop into Boswells café for a coffee but just recently the standards have gone down. Last week I found the coffee was cold and not having much time I drank it and rushed off. Also, the two female staff were more interested in chatting to each other than serving customers. I might think again before I pay them another visit.

Popped into Boswells for loaded jacket potato skins, which when I visited in 2015 were delicious. Sad to report on this occasion they were burnt and, to be honest, I suspect they were from the previous day. My visit was at 11:15am, so a sort of brunch type meal as Id skipped breakfast. Deeply disappointing.

Really nicely cooked all day breakfast to start the day off in Reading. Not greasy, perfectly cooked and good value. Sausages are very good!Even got some latte art in each drink, with friendly staff what more could you want?Would recommend. Good variety of hot and cold food and a takeaway section.

A very large, spacious place to eat or drink with one of the best all day breakfasts around. Nice friendly staff and the prices aren't bad for the quantity and quality of food.

This coffee shop was ok, the coffee isn't great and the ordering system is confusing. There was quite a long queue of people waiting and the staff were taking order but not necessarily delivering at the same time.I don't think I would visit again

My and my wife went here for 'brunch.' Staff were very pleasant, but very busy and it took 10 mins to que to collect our coffee.When after 10 mins the coffee arrived, but I had the additional extra of someones lip stick around the rim of my cup.Cutlery was dirty and had to wipe them clean with tissues and alcohol gel.Breakfast arrived, kind of warm, with an undercooked egg.Some of the 'comfy' chairs you sit in don't reach the table and you feel like a small child trying to eat your food as the plate is about level with your chin.Customers coming in sand around looking at you as if to say, "Hurry up, we want your seat!"Music playing quite loud and so those wanting to talk to each other are having to talk louder and it gives the impression of a 'bad disco in a cattle market!'Only scored 2 stars for the staff, cafe and food would have earned them 1 only!Give this place a miss....

I have to be honest. The two latté I had and my partner had a coffee and then a pot of tea was good but after we had finished our first drinks I put the tray with the empty cups by the till just to see if the staff would see it and then take it away but it did not happen like that. It was there for about 5 minutes and it was a customer that gave it to a member of staff. I then noticed with both drinks we had in that time that when customers would leave no one would either clean or clear the tables, before we left there were at least 4 tables left with all the dirty plates and cups. It made me wonder if it was like this where the customers are what is the kitchen like.

First time wife and me have frequented this chain. Although we only partook of beverages, which were quite satisfactory, we did look at the menu of foods and prices and thought they looked fair enough. Adjoining tables who had food brought to them appeared satisfied and to us the food looked appetizing and well presented.For mid morning this outlet was busy and staff were coping well. A thing to note is that whilst busy used crockery etc did not pile up on tables and was speedily cleared away.

Extremely low quality food made in the microwave. Tasteless, effortless and dirty. Wouldn't even feed it to my dog. AVOID!!

Situated in not the nicest mall, but it's a lovely coffee shop serving a great full breakfast. Big you are in the area well worth a visit

This is the place to go for a snack with such a wide range of cakes on offer and the cold drinks are such a wide range in variety.

Dropped by for a quick "lunch for one" in between some Christmas shopping. Fancied a light bite, so opted for loaded potato skins with salad and a large Pepsi. I asked for some salad cream, expecting a Heinz sachet or two to be thrown on the side of the plate. They'd run out, so the manageress sent someone out to get some more salad cream...Skins were cooked to perfection and mixed creamily with cheese and onion. Salad was a few cherry tomatoes and mixed leaves - plain but tasty, and as for the salad cream - a good sized pot of it arrived at my table within moments of me sitting down. Fab service, good food and at a good price. Boswell's is always a local favourite - as can be seen each lunchtime by how packed it is.

Came in here for lunch with my Mum. We just wanted a sandwich or something quick. The menu is very good - lots of choice of sandwiches, plus jacket potatoes, all day breakfast. The food arrived quickly, brought to our table by smiling, cheerful staff. Good pot of tea, the place was clean (including the loo), choice of seating - armchairs or dining chairs and tables. Popped in here on a weekday morning for a breakfast en-route to the railway station.I had the standard English breakfast which was tasty, plenty to eat and everything was good and hot and the pot of tea was just the trick to wash it all down.We’ll definitely be back.

My husband and I always use Boswell's in Reading for lunch as it is always clean and tidy in there - no tables piled up with cups, saucers, plates etc., which is what we have experienced in other, larger organisations. The staff are friendly, polite and very efficient. We usually have the "senior special" which is hot and very tasty, though there are many other choices available. You can either sit at a table on proper seats or sit on comfy chairs at a lower table. They do food ranging from salads to something with chips, so most tastes are catered for.

After having breakfast with myself and my two young daughters I have managed to find the most ridiculously expensive cafe in Reading small portions and absolutely filthy cups and cutlery. Stay well away from this cespit.

My friends tried this place whilst shopping. My first impression was average coffee shop, Their Hygiene Rating was advertised at 5. I think this should be reviewed as we found their cups was dirty and had to be changed. We all had Panini's (toasted) which had very little filling. The side salad was off colour. For the rest of the day my friends and I felt very thirsty. We felt this might have to do with hidden salt in our snack. For a Panini and a cup of tea this came to £7.00 + Overpriced for the quality of our snack. Definately will not be going here again. Felt like we'd been robbed.
