Bosun's Restaurant in York

Fantastic food and Alexcellent service. My wife and I had the Thursday fillet steak meal but started with the belly pork (the best I have ever had) and the pea and wild garlic soup, which was also delicious. The steaks, cooked to perfection as we had requested and accompaniments were perfect. Service throughout was excellent, especially with Alex who was very proficient and a good laugh! Altogether, a great evening and we’re looking forward to our next visit.

Delicious Sunday lunch at Bosun’s. The restaurant was very busy, but despite this the service was good. My husband had the roast beef Sunday lunch and I had celeriac. We both enjoyed our meals. The gluten-free sticky toffee pudding was absolutely gorgeous and the highlight of my meal. We were very pleased to see that they offer alcohol-free wines, but I have knocked one mark off purely because there are no alcohol-free wines available by the glass.

5 adultos y un niño de seis años para el almuerzo del domingo. Carretera de acceso un poco complicado, pero por lo demás la ubicación es excelente. Vivimos en este pueblo durante unos años en la década de 1970 y recordamos el astillero y restaurante chino regularmente inundado ( Octagon ) en este sitio . Buena mesa con buenas vistas, precioso día soleado. Mínimo £ 30 por 2 platos - OK - esto parece prometedor. Pedí agua para la mesa y pedí 2 entrantes de cóctel de langostinos para los compañeros , las damas tomarían dulces , hasta aquí tan buenos . El agua llegó en una botella tapada a temperatura ambiente - ¡día soleado cálido! ¡Llegaron los "cócteles de gambas"! 2 pequeños boles de pudín con una cucharada cada uno de lo que solo podría describirse mejor como camarones de un conocido supermercado alemán abultado con tomates cherry - al menos 6 cada uno - y recortes de verduras variadas , había una salsa de clases pero de cantidad insignificante . El intento más patético de un cóctel de gambas que he encontrado en más de 60 años. Los platos principales - teníamos 2 de cerdo y 3 de ternera , fueron servidos agradablemente , aunque de nuevo en platos fríos y la comida a temperatura ambiente . La presentación es inusual , siendo más una pila estilo hamburguesa pero no peor para eso . Los dulces de la dama se veían excelentes y nos hicieron arrepentir a los hombres de nuestra elección de un entrante. El restaurante es atractivo , el personal promediando atento , puede que les hayamos pegado en un mal día pero , con toda honestidad , esos cócteles de gambas fueron vergonzosos y sería pedir demasiado servir comidas calientes en placas calientes y servir agua helada ? ¡Cobran suficiente!

Hemos estado un par de veces en Bosuns ya que vivimos en el pueblo y ha sido realmente increíble recientemente. ¡Esta noche fue increíble! Solemos ir por la noche de carne, que es una gran relación calidad-precio y todo era perfecto! La comida es preciosa, el personal es muy amable y en la pelota. Ambos dijimos que esperamos venir una vez al mes si es posible! No podemos esperar a volver pronto, así que gracias!

Llamé para reservar en la mesa, pero el teléfono no fue contestado (dos veces) y su contestador telefónico buzón de mensajes lleno. Siendo un jueves por la noche, decidimos dar un paseo por allí esperando poder conseguir una mesa ya que éramos comensales tempranos alrededor de las 7. 00 pm. A su llegada, parecían estar llenos en un 30 %. Señora en recepción preguntó si habíamos reservado y dijimos "no" explicando que habíamos sonado pero no pudimos pasar. Entonces nos dijo que a menudo están demasiado ocupados para contestar el teléfono. ¿En serio? Oh! ¡Y los mensajes siempre están llenos! Entonces nos dijeron que están llenos y no podrían apretarnos (a pesar de que hay mesas actualmente vacías en casi todas partes). Customer UNservice lo resume. Adivina qué... no perderemos el tiempo sonando de nuevo, ya que parece poco probable que el teléfono sea contestado y ciertamente no estará conduciendo hasta allí. Un montón de grandes lugares para ir sin este lugar. Sugiero que todos los demás hagan lo mismo y vayan donde su costumbre es apreciada - ¡porque no está aquí!

Lovely place great staff food was great I had a flat iron steak which was cooked perfect the only fault I had was the meal & starer was to salty why do chief have to put to much salt in things isn't it better for the customer to put salt on the meal themselves

We visited on a Thursday evening for my mum’s birthday. There was a lovely lady waiting to book us in but I’d given the wrong name it was booked in. I felt terrible because I was complaining it was the second time it had happened, so may I publicly apologise to that lady. After the mix up was sorted we were happily shown to our table in the raised area, our waitress soon came and took our drinks orders. The rest of our party arrived and we ordered our food with a very pleasant waitress, we all opted for the steak menu. The starters soon came and looked amazing, the attention to detail was second to none. I had a little taste of the pork and the soup and they tasted as good as they looked. The house white included was also very nice and my mum opted for the Pinot Grigio rose which tasted great also. Four of us had opted for the flat iron steak and two for the fillet with sides of onion rings and mixed veg. They all looked great and tasted amazing and were nice and hot. We all thoroughly enjoyed our mains. A few went for puddings and they all looked and tasted delicious, there was a nice touch of a serving board brought out with happy birthday and a brownie on it for my mum which she loved. Great location and a very nice design / decor. Menu is comprehensive, reasonable pricing, service was ok however the food whilst tasting good was on the cold side particularly the ravioli!

Initially all of the staff were supper friendly on arrival and during service - dinner was good, special mention to the crème brûlée. The Decor of the restaurant is beautiful. No complaints there. Sadly our evening left us feeling very unwelcome. We knew the restaurant closed at 11pm and as we had made a special trip out to the Bosun on a recommendation whilst visiting York we intend on spending the evening there. However the music in the restaurant was turned off well before 10pm - killed the atmosphere. All of the cleaning up was happening around us. We really felt pressure the leave and it was a poor end to what could have been a wonderful experience. Nobody came to say goodbye when we left and it really did spoil the ending. It was a Saturday and it felt very rude and unwelcoming. Such a shame as it all started so well.

A few years ago I visited this restaurant and wasn't impressed, so I thought I would try once more. This time it was lovely, the food was good, service friendly and the wine was great. I will definitely go again

We were served by Alina who was very attentive and polite. She helped us choose our meal based on her knowledge of the menu. A pleasure to deal with.

We chose to come here to celebrate my 30th birthday as my 6 year old daughter has ceoliac and gets very nervous when eating out and this menu is amazing for gluten free food with 0 sacrifice to the taste and quality! Everything we ordered arrived in good time and was all perfectly cooked and both our children thourougly enjoyed their meals ❤️ Following out meal we had some car battery issues and the staff was amazing at calling someone to come and jump our battery so we could get home! Amazing place and will be a regular for us going foreward for any family celebrations! Thank you!

Relaxed Sunday lunch with family. Great ambiance, lovely round table with glimpses across the river. Waiting staff attentive and great interaction with our youngest family member. Food was well cooked and presented with smashing vegetable sides.

We visited this restaurant when it first opened, beautiful setting. However the menu has changed quite a lot since then and is now more 'nouvelle cuisine'. We were very disappointed with the choice available and even more so when the meals arrived. The portion size for the price is ridiculous. Prior to this visit we were planning to book for New Years Eve, however after this experience we had changed our minds.....good job at £150 a head for a 9 course tasting menu. Why not keep it simple, tasting menus are not for everyone and especially at £150! Just serve good pub food at a reasonable cost and I would be back.

Fabulous meal for the start of our sons 40th birthday weekend Chef came to speak to Lawrence as he heard Lawrence was in and knew he was a chef in York at pearly cow . Did not appreciate the service from the manager, she was very passive towards me and my partner and when it came to paying the bill, we stated we did not want to pay the service charge for the lack of good customer service, extremely let the experience down and rather than taking it maturely it felt she purposely gave us the incorrect change back. We spoke to her about this and she then gave the correct change however gave a snarky comment stating here’s our ‘extra’ money though was not extra at all. Also, the Sticky Toffee Pudding was fairly tasteless. The setting is lovely however the service is not.

En primer lugar, este es un restaurante impresionante, bellamente diseñado, como es nuestro favorito habitual ir al restaurante en el lado opuesto del puerto deportivo del río York en Fulford, que es nuestro habitual ir en nuestras visitas mensuales a York. Para variar, pensamos en “entrar” para un almuerzo rápido y darle una oportunidad... ... El menú es mucho más para una cena “especial” en lugar de un almuerzo ligero y simplemente entrar para nuestro almuerzo nos costó cerca de la asombrosa £ 100 con bebidas! Qué lástima que hicieran comidas más populares... es decir, quiches caseros, ensaladas de pollo, salmón, curry’s, chile o incluso deliciosos pasteles caseros n ofertas de café, etc., a precios más asequibles estoy seguro de que se reventaría en las costuras como es nuestro habitual ir a ‘The waterfront’. Apenas había un puñado de personas y es una pena tener un restaurante tan increíble y un ambiente impresionante, pero sin ambiente. Después de recibir el menú «especial» que era de 2 / 3 platos por alrededor de £ 30 por persona (pero seguramente no muchos podían comer un plato de 2 / 3 después del desayuno! ) nos dieron entonces el menú de bocadillos después de comentar que el menú limitado no tenía nada para un bocado a la hora del almuerzo, (los bocadillos eran alrededor de £ 20 ) ... . . O sí, podría sentarse en las cápsulas al aire libre y tomar una hamburguesa o bollo Hot Dog que de nuevo eran impresionantes, pero en nuestros viajes mensuales a York prefieren un buen 'almuerzo' con un ambiente encantador a un precio razonable... .. Tal vez en el futuro si el restaurante The waterfront en el puerto deportivo de York está reservado podríamos ir y darle otra oportunidad? Sin embargo, hay que añadir que toda la caravana y el área de glamping se ha hecho a una especificación muy alta y es realmente encantador, es solo una pena que el restaurante no está reventando en las costuras desde el principio que realmente debería ser... ... .

El asado del domingo fue increíble. Tenía jamón asado con miel. Y mi compañero tenía la carne asada. También con una selección de verduras de temporada. La comida llegó justo en el momento adecuado. E incluso arregló un postre. El crumble fue el mejor que he probado. Y 5 estrellas para el personal. Realmente encantadora experiencia.

Esperó un tiempo excesivamente largo para que se sirviera la comida, es decir, 45 minutos desde el pedido. Muy caro por las porciones servidas, las bebidas sobreprecio. Asegúrese de comprobar que se le cobraron los precios como se indica en el menú ... Yo no, por ejemplo, me cobraron £ 5. 50 para patatas fritas triples cocidas, menú indicado £ 4. El precio del menú de pollo BLT era de £ 15 Me cobraron £ 15. 95 . No volveré ni recomendaré.

Great food great cocktails. Staff lovely. My 5 year old son said he gives 100 out of 100. Definitely be back 💯 views are amazing from the restaurant. Beautiful decor.

Me and my wife had Sunday lunch at the Bosun’s and both really enjoyed our meal. The beef was cooked to perfection but my only complaint was the cauliflower was a little under cooked and the roast potato’s a little bit on the hard side, other than that the meal was lovely and the staff and service excellent.

Place is fancy and priced accordingly, but food was not up to scratch. Burgers were super salty, and table opposite mentioned the same. Patties were dense and dry.

Booked here because it had been recommended. The setting is lovely, by the river, quiet, out of the way. We all had burgers of some kind because the menu felt limited at the time we ate. Service was OK. Food was on the small side. Both myself and my son went away hungry and had to 'top off' somewhere else. Another problem with the food was it wasn't served on a plate, so the juices/fat weren't caught and ran onto the table. Won't be back again and regretted going.

Spent over 40 quid on pizzas and the were quite nice and hot but sadly lacking in the topping department. I know they can’t be loaded but 6 small pieces of pepperoni and a couple of splodges of mozzarella per pizza is definitely on the stingy side. I won’t buy another at £12 each.

We came here for dinner to celebrate our daughter’s graduation…. So glad we did. Absolutely delicious food, presented beautifully with so much attention to detail. The chefs are clearly very talented and passionate in what they do. Everything was perfect, the service was excellent and the staff very friendly. Such a pretty location too, overlooking the river. I just came across this looking for a restaurant near York with parking and I am so glad I did. We sat outside looking at the beautiful spectacle of the river and the many boats and canoes enjoying the gorgeous day. We were met so graciously and taken to our pre booked table outside and given a carafe of water, we then had a cocktail and a glass of beer and perused the menu, I opted for the tomato stuffed with fish and my husband the belly pork, both were delicious, I had the lamb (very nicely cooked) and he had the beef (delicious) we shared the sticky toffee pudding and ice cream - sooo good. We shared a bottle of Sauvignon blanc which was £25 - cheaper than our local! We thought overall the meal was great value for York, which can be very expensive and the restaurant was beautiful in a very pretty setting. All of the staff were delightful and we enjoyed a short walk along the river afterwards in the sunshine. Our first visit but definitely not our last! P.s. Even the toilets were lovely!!

We visited in the afternoon for a quiet meal to celebrate our daughter’s graduation. I can only say AMAZING. The Thursday steak with wine for two was excellent value but because there were three of us I had the burger, which was also superb. The nice touches - having the steak served with black pepper sauce on the side (and not having to pay extra) - being asked if we would like to add gratuity (which we did as the service was excellent) rather than simply adding it to the bill - the staff picking up on the fact we were celebrating a graduation and giving our daughter a small chocolate board - all added up to make this a memorable afternoon. And I must mention the beautiful location. We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and will be visiting again.

This review is for the on-site cafe/snack bar which is ab fab. Today was our second visit. We come here to launch our own kayak and pay the launch fee at the cafe. After a lovely paddle (last week to Lendal Bridge in the centre of York and this week to Nayburn lock) we have our lunch here, sat outside next to the river The food is excellent, as is the coffee and ice cream. More importantly every member of staff we have encountered there has been extremely pleasant/helpful, they all have a great attitude and make you feel comfortable and welcome. We love it here and will doubtless try out the Bosun's restaurant at some point. Thank you to all the lovely staff for making our time there so enjoyable.

The restaurant is on the banks of the Ouse but well outside of York in a tranquil setting . We went with friends. , who a regulars so we had a warm and friendly welcome . The menu offered a wide range of dishes and the drinks list was similarly wide ranging . My Yorkshire asparagus , pea and wild garlic was interesting and lemon posset was the perfect way to finish the meal . A bit lacking in atmosphere the day we were there as there were not many others lunching there that day , but the setting is lovely .

Lovely surroundings, front of house excellent service , goats cheese & beetroot starter yummy, pasta out of this world & rhubarb cheesecake is to die for ! Highly recommend 😁

Looking out from your table you have an excellent view of the River Ouse as it passes through York. Situated in the pretty village of Bishopthorpe on the outskirts of the City is Bosun’s. A lovely setting & with an equally lovely menu to accompany your dining experience, it all comes together to give you a thoroughly enjoyable experience. With a full compliment of drinks for you to choose from, these will cover most tastes & pockets. For that Special Occasion, Bosun’s is the ideal venue.

This is a fabulous location. Staff are helpful friendly and professional. We booked for Sunday lunch which was fabulous along with a great bottle of wine only minus was the small portion size of the starter (pate) and desert (sticky toffee pudding). For the price this was a slight let down. Overall though 5*****

What a place this is an absolute hidden gem, beautiful building, beautiful surroundings, fantastic food, attentive, polite and friendly staff. Would highly recommend this place for a spot lunch, evening meal or even a family, friends or works gathering. We will definitely be returning here soon.

Amazing Birthday Meal. This was our first visit and won’t be our last, the service was brilliant all staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was beautifully presented, tasted fresh and very delicious. The restaurant itself had a lovely atmosphere and decor. We look forward to visiting again!

Wonderful food in an idyllic spot, as our group of friends was 50 Ladies in total lunching I felt as though the staff worked really hard with nothing being too much trouble….a couple of glitches but these cannot take away the enjoyment of our lunch there and having read the comments from some of the Ladies who attended they agree with me and had a lovely time chatting away over our lunch time meet up at this unusual spot on the outskirts of York.

Really good food with lots of choices . Beautifully presented . Good portion sizes . The restaurant is unexpectedly tucked away down by the river but worth finding . We’ve been before , we’ll come again . A lovely position on the side of the river which you can see from the lower dining area . There is a nice buzzy atmosphere and good friendly service .

First time at Bosun's and wish I had discovered this hidden gem before! The restaurant and bar are beautiful and the surroundings of the marina really make it a unique setting. The staff and ambience were fantastic and I needed help to choose from the menu because everything sounds so tasty. I went with the belly pork for starters which was recommended and rightly so, it was delicious. For main I had the beef cheek, this is the best beef I've ever tasted, literally just falls apart on your plate, accompanied by a fluffy mash and beef jus. My mouth is watering thinking about it now. Thursday night is Steak night which was clearly popular and I can't wait to return for. You wont get 2 steaks like this and a bottle of wine for a better price. If you want to enjoy great value, high end British food in a fantastic atmosphere then look no further than Bosun's. Can't wait to visit again.

Beautiful food in a lovely location. Their knowledge of allergens was clear and it was nice to eat anything of the menu with some tweaks. The Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious and portion sizes do not disappoint. They do not rush you as some places do, and it all makes for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Went for Sunday lunch with family. Really impressed with everything. Nice setting , although the water level was frighteningly high, lovely inside , good welcome , friendly service and really excellent food. A little pricey perhaps - £20 for Sunday roast but you get what you pay for and drinks were reasonably priced. Only criticism - if you have run out of the kids chocolate brownie before 1pm , surely you should say so before they order it ……….
