Borough in Edinburgh, City of

They appear to have closed but are giving no information!!! I have a voucher as I have seen other people write here and I can't get any response or money back. It's atrocious. Surely they cannot keep socials open and be listed in Michelin guide when they've gone under by the looks of it. But why so secret with no note that they have closed??

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Borough restaurant in Leith. The food was amazing and the service was welcoming, attentive and pleasant. We were so happy with our dining experience here on our last night in town, because frankly all our other meals in Edinburgh (despite extensive prior restaurant research) were massively disappointing, including the very overpriced but underwhelming Aizle restaurant. A big thank you and compliments to the chef and staff at Borough!

We felt very welcome, the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere. We had a 5 dish menu, and every dish was perfectly balanced with amazing flavors. Our waiter was very observant, relaxed and friendly. A great plus is that they have good non-alcoholic options to drink. They made us amazing mocktails, that was perfect to the food. Great experience!

A nice spot for a special occasion. Food was beautifully cooked with some interesting pairings of flavours. The chicken was a stand out, I had forgotten that eating chicken in a restaurant could be enjoyable and juicy rather than boring and dry. The menu wasn’t quite as mind blowing as I would have liked on the day that we went, but it’s always changing. Service was very good. It was a bit slow, but I got the impression this was because they wanted to make the whole visit into an experience. We went for lunch because I wanted to try it for a lighter price first. I did find that the pricing here was unfortunately more proof that it’s becoming financially painful in general to eat in Edinburgh over the last year. I had seen online that the lunch menu was around £33 but when I arrived I was greeted with a £40 or £70 menu, plus service charge. So unfortunately I don’t think I can come back very soon, and certainly not for dinner.

Fully recommended, great experience of flavours and textures in their dishes. The service was awesome and a incredible cozy place to have a beautiful dinner. Thanks again :)

Really enjoyed our dinner here the other night. Wonderful food and lovely atmosphere. Standout for me was the smoked pumpkin seed pesto on one of the dishes, interesting flavour that totally elevated the dish!

A first but not last trip for lunch at this restaurant tucked away in Henderson Street in the Leith area of Edinburgh. Two different set menus available with supplementary courses available if wished. Excellent combinations of flavours in the various courses which were well presented. Add friendly service and a good time was had.

Loved eating here. Every new dish that came out was incredibly well thought out. The parsnips, brown butter and dark chocolate dessert, blew me away. Just an incredible pairing of flavours. Service was lovely too. £45 for the set menu for the food we got was great value. This was up there with some of the top tasting menus I’ve experienced. I can’t state this enough that I loved the combination of all the flavours in each dish.

We recently went to Borough for lunch and absolutely loved it. Chilled atmosphere paired with delicious food and drinks. We especially adored the oysters, the pork and the liver parfait. The wine and the bramble cocktail were also perfect. Thanks!

We went as a family group for my niece’s 18th birthday. The staff were fantastic and made a lot of effort to be welcoming and make it feel special. The food was delicious- lots of interesting flavours put together, and beautifully presented. The non alcoholic red wine alternative was very interesting. My only suggestion would be that the main course, although tasty, was very small and not hot enough. A more generous portion would have been appreciated. I’m sure we’ll be back - thank you for a lovely experience.

I’m far from having a refined palate but I thought the food was lovely and gave me something to think about. Cured Mackeral with pear and sea trout were my first 2 courses (I forgot to take a picture of the menu to give proper representation of the complexity of flavor in these dishes). The starter of toast and rosemary salt bread was to die for and the dessert of dark chocolate oats and pear was the proverbial icing on the cake. On top of it all the staff were very friendly and kind, accompanying my mother whom I had not prepared properly for a set menu (the cheese board was also fantastic). They even gave us a recommendation for a good fish and chips place for dinner. I would love to come back whenever I’m next in town.

Relaxed atmosphere, warm service, excellent food.

Innovative food, brilliantly-executed. That is how I would describe our experience at Borough. We opted for the set menu as we couldn’t decide on what to get, except that we switched out the roasted grouse for the Shetland cod. The Shetland cod became my favourite dish. It was brilliantly-executed, with tender, creamy cod paired with cauliflower, beurre blanc and caviar beads. In fact, every dish was excellently done. From the first dish of the focaccia with butter and rosemary salt - a simple-enough looking dish, and yet the focaccia was perfectly toasted that the rosemary-salted butter melted on contact; to the sweetcorn broth with curry and whey protein - the sweetcorn broth was elevated by the spicy kick of the curry and the crunch of roasted corn ears, raisins and (I believe) pumpkin seeds; to the squid sashimi strips with pickled kohlrabi, apple and grapefruit. Dessert was the perfect ending to this meal, with the caramelia cremeux with raspberry and malt ice-cream. The raspberry’s tartness was a perfect contrast to the chocolatey sweetness of the caramelia and cremeux. Service was excellent as well. The service staff are so warm and friendly, and make you feel really welcome. This was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in recent times, and I fully recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a different, innovative dining experience.

We had an amazing dinner at Borough last night. As outsiders, I'm afraid we hadn't heard of this elegant, friendly place before, so our experience was totally unexpected and completely mind-blowing. The 5 course menu is a crescendo of distinctive tastes, creative combinations, and wonderful textures. "Fried courgette and goats cheese" might not sound very exciting on the page, but on the plate it is a complete revelation of punchy flavours. Apparently the menu changes every week or so too, which is a major achievement in current circumstances when many other restaurateurs are minimising changes in order to balance their boats. Throw in the incredibly friendly team at Borough, and the conclusion for us was that we couldn't think of when we enjoyed a restaurant experience more. What a shame we live over 400 miles away . . .

6 course set menu. Food was nice, some dishes were excellent but others were only ok such as the steak main which was fine but not really that creative. Dill ice cream dessert was incredible though. Service was very slow, after 2 hours we had only eaten 2 courses, and it took 20 minutes to bring some bread when asked.

There was a set menu for lunch only. Two courses for 27 pounds. It took them over an hour, though there were only three tables taken at the restaurant. Extremely small portions. literally 10 pieces of chips for extra payment. I was disappointed, sorry.

I’m sorry to write this review because I know how hard it’s been recently for the hospitality industry. The need to make changes in order to survive has been key, however, when this is done in a way which reduces the customer experience this is sort of shooting yourself in the foot. We’ve eaten in Borough a few times and have always loved it, the flavours, the creativity and the generosity has been superb. Not so this time. Yes, it was a cheap, fixed price lunch, but I don’t want to sit there feeling I’m eating a cheapo lunch, I want to savour it and really enjoy every morsel. This was average at best, nothing to excite or interest. Everything felt like it was an absolute minimum. No bread no extras, no sauces…. We bought bread, (the best bit of the whole meal) was £3.50 for two pieces and olives £3.50 for ten olives. The staff were lovely. Our bill for our ‘cheapo’ lunch with 2 drinks and 2 glasses of wine was over £100. There are better options out there…….

We enjoyed a return visit to Brough yesterday to try out their new format menu. Same delicious food as before with lots of choices now and if anything a bit cheaper overall. We ordered a selection of nibbles to get us started and then three of the larger dishes to share. We finished with a delicious dessert and an excellent tarte tatin served with Scottish brie. Can also recommend the Welsh wine that was available this week. There were vibrant colours and flavours from the seasonal menu and we enjoyed it all. Great to see the place busy and the Shore looked wonderful in the sunshine. Leith has lots of dining options but the friendly team at Borough always makes this a brilliant choice !

We had a lovely lunch and drinks here on Saturday afternoon and were served by three lovely members of staff, Ciara, Bridget and Michal. Their hospitality could not have been better! While the food was amazing, the experience of it all was our favorite part! Everything we had was so tasty. Our waitress and all the other staff were super attentive, friendly, and described all the dishes very well. It was a unique dining experience that was very well curated. I’m not a huge foodie and would describe myself as somewhat of a picky eater, but I liked every dish I had- even the scallops and I’m not usually a scallop fan! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a dining experience that’s a little different than your typical restaurant!

Top notch, Michelin food. Wonderful combo of twists on traditional, solid cooking with new things we’ve never had before. Everything was an elevation from versions we’ve had before. Could not recommend Borough enough. We went for the vegan tasting menu and every component was well thought out and delicious, with flavours that on first thought might not have worked, but of course did. The mushroom truffle pasta, vegan pie and sweet apple tart topped with bitter mustardy endive were particular highlights.
