Lovely dinner at Borders tonight, would definitely recommend the Atul Kochher designed flavours of India dishes. Kaela welcomed us with a great smile, knew the menu and worked tirelessly to make our night a bit more special, given the restaurant was very busy with 2 large golf society groups. A great big thank you to her.

Our first visit to the Borders Restaurant at McDonald Hill Valley, and we really enjoyed it. We were welcomed by the very friendly and well informed Servers and quickly served with drinks. The food was really beautiful ( and consistently so) we both had the Tomato Soup to begin, it steaming hot, piquant in flavour and served with Artisan Bread. My husband had the Butternut Squash and Sage Risotto, which he really enjoyed, and I had the 180g Rump Steak and Fries ( Jay was very good natured while I was ‘ customising’ it, and then patient ( and polite) when I was changing my mind about Chips or fries….the fries were fab !!) My husband really enjoyed the Apple and Raspberry Crumble and I had a mix of Aran ice cream which was delicious. Jay was helpful and attentive and in spite of how very busy the restaurant was, he was friendly and pleasant throughout. Hoping to go again later in the week. Thanks everyone.

Borders restaurant Had a complimentary cooked breakfast with our stay at the Hill Valley, Considering the high price point (e.g. rump steak sandwich with crisps for £18 or a club sandwich with fries for £17) the interior and main restaurant room looks more like a function room with chairs and tables, there isn’t any restaurant atmosphere to it. Considering at the time we went in there was 3 tables of 2 (including ours) the host at first asked for a room number and asked to sit help ourselves to Cold buffet which had juices, cereal, fruit and pastries. We’ve been asked if we’d like a hot drink. This alone took about 10 mins to come after ordering. Then no one has taken our breakfast order for nearly 20 minutes (timed it as 18mins) before it was taken we’ve had a staff member coming to 3 tables with breakfast that no one has ordered, so clearly the organisation is very poor considering they didn’t know who’s ordered a breakfast when they had 3 tables. The food itself was alright it was a cooked breakfast so didn’t knock us off our feet in any way. If anything we were frustrated with the wait and how the staff kept coming up with the wrong order to us. Overall wouldn’t recommend, and would much rather recommend a local Whitchurch breakfast bars / pubs. Much cheaper and nicer!

Felt like a transport cafe with groups of presumably male golfers on a package who were loud and using unacceptable language, menu was not as published online, but was very expensive for a limited basic menu choice , the price of drinks was extortionate, would not go there again or recommend to anyone

Group of 6 visited for dinner on 28/08/20. Restaurant service was a shambles from start to finish. It was almost comical how bad the service was. Staff clearly completely untrained and no manager taking charge. The bill at the end bore absolutely no resemblance to what we had eaten. The meal took almost three hours due to significant waits between courses. There were other customers in the restaurant also receiving the same terrible service. We witnessed an older couple be served one main, and the lady had finished before the man had even got his food, which in the end he said to forget it and they left very annoyed. The actual food itself once received was nice enough, but on the whole very overpriced. Left feeling very disappointed and shocked at how much such a poor meal cost us.

We were staying in hotel on a DBB basis (£25pp allocation) which meant you could rat off either the inclusive set menu or the a la carte - you just pay for anything over the amount allowed. Table was booked for 6.45pm a few tables were already in use and we were told that they were going to be busy tonight. Fortunately I wore my coat walking from our room, thank goodness as I needed to keep it on. The restaurant was cold and other people were complaining about it too. Heaters were dotted about, however didn't seem to be on. We were told that the heating was on but it kept going into standby- hmmm, personally I think the staff have been told to use the same excuses and my thoughts are this is not a one off occasion ! Back to the food - staff are friendly and efficient although it didn't seem to be a relaxed affair- felt like they gave fast service to free up the table. Some people may like that though. The quality of the food was good and hot. Dont look for big platefuls of food, however the size was more than enough for us. Dinner was very good for an inclusive rate.

Really friendly staff, a nice bit pool that wasn’t too deep for the kids and a December breakfast. Evening meal wasn’t explained very well and I think my pregnant wife’s vegetarian pastry was from Greggs. The food didn’t match the actual food either. For example; my daughters strawberry meringue was actual a meringue covered in blackcurrents and cherry’s. On the whole though it was great value. Pity we couldn’t see a lot of the grounds as they were nice but the weather was miserable.

The food at this restaurant is lovely and is very reasonably priced. The staff are very good although service can be slow on occasions. The only thing I would criticise is that the conservatory part of the restaurant could do with refurbishing .

Stayed here on a spa treat with dinner bed and breakfast. Spa, hotel, and surroundings were all lovely. Food was very good, but service in the bar and the restaurant was very poor. Very pleasant staff but just so slow. We were sitting in the restaurant for 30 mins before getting a drink. We had finished our starters before the drinks arrived. Same story at breakfast unfortunately. It would put me off staying here again.

We booked on line and were resident in the hotel on a half board package. The staff were the stars of this show, friendly and humerus, joking with us and making our experience special. The food was good, the bread excellent, our mains mixed, my chicken good but the black pudding croquet excellent, the risotto great taste but rice too al dente. The puddings delicious but missing elements listed on the menu, no honeycomb on the brownie and vanilla ice cream should have been chocolate, no praline with the passion fruit tart. These little things are irritating and the chef needs to pay attention to detail as everything was delicious but just not quite right. The wine list is good and a tad expensive but clearly quality, the French Viognier was excellent and desert wine to me shows class. Colin the food and beverage supervisor and Sam the waiter were so lovely they truly understand the concept of service, friendly and helpful with humour, well done both.

Stayed for a weekend of golf. It wasn't all bad, the main courses were generally very tasty with the meat/fish portion size plentiful. Outside of these (and a very nice parfait starter) things were not good. The breakfasts were massively overpriced and chaotic. The puddings for evening meals were absurd (tasteless, tiny and expensive). I also had the misfortune to order some chips on arrival, these were dark brown, yet as limp as a shoelace and utterly awful. A real shame they just could put a single whole meal together to make more of a bright side!

If you like slow service and overpriced bland food, then eat here! Dinner service lasted almost 2 hours! Waitresses clueless, utter chaos! DO NOT order the Peri Peri Chicken Burger! £15 for something you could get better at KFC! Processed breaded chicken, no flavour, definitely NOT Peri Peri! A table near to us hadn’t even had their starter by the time we were served main and desert. We complained to the F&B Supervisor, but she really wasn’t bothered. Sadly, I’d not stay at this hotel again due to this experience.

I don't understand some of the recrnt reviews. We were here for lunch and dinner and enjoyed both thoroughly. Dinner-I had the burger and my wife had the risotto with 3 drinks. The burger was delicious, home made from scratch and the chips were cooked perfectly. My wife's risotto was one of the tastiest I've ever eaten. Yes it was expensive (we had it included in the room rate) but the price is what you would expect from a country hotel/golf club. Breakfast- cooked to order, tasted really good and huge portions. The cold buffet was nice, with a good choice of cereal and freshly squeezed juices. In both cases the staff were really friendly and were happy to substitute items on request. My only criticism is that if you tip using your card the staff don't get any of it which is something that makes me very unhappy. Companies that do this should change their policies.

If you're paying £25 for a steak, you'd expect the chips to be cooked. They weren't. £13 for a burger sounds more reasonable doesn't it? But it was clearly a mass produced frozen burger, also served with undercooked chips.

Stayed here for one night for a friends wedding and had breakfast included in the room price. As Macdonald are a well known chain of hotel, I expected the usual sort of set up at a hotel, of a cold and hot Buffett breakfast with some drinks stations and coffee and tea readily available... oh how I was mistaken.

We were on half board tariff and so got £25 to spend, we ordered a bottle of white wine and they just left it on the table no ice bucket! The service was generally poor and we were served by many staff I didn't think there was much organisation in there. My friend had asparagus starter which was nice the goats cheese mousse was not what was on the menu as it said walnuts but there weren't any and portion wise it was minuscule. I had gnocchi for mains and my friend salmon these were much better delicious in fact. Then for desert we ordered desert wine with rhubarb and custard semi-freddo, also delicious.

Teníamos el menú de mercado de 3 campos. Para empezar, teníamos terrina y zanahoria y cilantro sopa, para platos principales risotto de squash tuvimos butternut y panceta de cerdo y por tanto tuvimos budín de pudin. Increíble. No creo que he comido tan bien en mi vida.

We were on a girls weekend away and choose this place as we'd been before and had a great meal. We all ordered off the market menu as we were on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal. We also asked for the bread and olives whilst we waited and ordered a bottle of wine plus a shandy.The bread arrived with the starter and the shandy came but no wine we had to ask twice for it.The food came very quickly and then when we asked for the bill to sign they took it back as they'd forgotten to put the deserts on. The next day at breakfast the buffet was in the bar! We were waited on by a lovely lady called Judy and a guy called Adam. Three of us ordered cooked breakfast and one a boiled egg and toast. The cooked good came but no egg, we asked twice, in the end we gave up and left. It seemed that there was no organisation, shame as the food was good and the staff really pleasant.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I has scallops and pig cheek for starters and my husband chose the mushroom soup. Both were lovely. My chump of lamb was to die for and a very ample portion and my husband's pan fried cod was white and fresh and beautifully cooked. The wine was good too as was the service. We would definitely eat here again.

MacDonald's have really upped their game since I last visited in January. They have been receptive to the comments they received from guests and the restaurant functioned very well this time at both dinner and breakfast. The staff were very attentive and sociable and made our dining experience special. The food was truly exquisite and of a very high standard. I can't wait to return!

The restaurant is small for a such a large hotel but on the night we ate dinner there it was fairly quiet. The food was excellent and the service good. I found the "Macdonald English Breakfast" taken in the restaurant the following morning was well cooked and the right size portion for my appetite.

We have stayed at this hotel 3 times and always look forward to the beautifully cooked food, both the evening meal and the extensive breakfast choice. For best value book DBB directly through the hotel.All the staff are very helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

The selection of starters was excellent. The main course extremely tasty with a good selection well presented. Dessert was tasty but lacked variety. Selection of coffee liquor was wide ranging.What really made this dining experience was the service we received.Well worth dining here.

Friendly staff, good food but service was dire. We waited 50 minutes for a starter even though we were the first diners in the restaurant. Breakfast on our first morning was chaotic and food was being brought out to people that had only just ordered and those like us had to wait ages as the kitchen were overwhelmed with orders and obviously unable to cope!!

Used the restaurant while on a 3 day break at the hotel. The food was delicious , all fresh produce cooked well with good portions. A very good menu maybe a bit pricey but you get what you pay for at the end if the day don't you. Breakfast was nice with a good choice again and all freshly cooked to order.

The service at this hotel is just awful. The staff appear to not have any sort of training whatsoever. We were three of us including one child. We waited more than 10 minutes to just have someone at a point where they would allow us to show us to our table. We then waited half an hour before we got the staff to get our water on the table. The bread with oil didnt arrive at all despite reminding the staff about it. Eventually, we got our food about an hour later. The food quality was poor. The risotto was dry, the fish was luke warm but hey! the child's burger was ok!When paying between £18 and £25 for a main course dish, I would expect better than that. We were not alone in the restaurant with teh same gripes. The two tables close to us had the very same issues. In fact one of the guests fell asleep waiting! and it was an hour before the waiting staff woke him up to ask if he had got his starter yet.I would not recommend this restaurant.

Great food on our first day in Shrewsbury. Went back twice. Staff very helpful, beautifully decorated and great selection of food on the menu. Also went back for cider again the next day. Well worth a visit. Would love to stay in the hotel next time rooms look amazing on the website. Definitely pop in

Really friendly pub, I was greeted by Caroline at the bar who was really happy. After a long day at work and away from home this was a lovely welcome. The mix grill was really good value and enjoyable. I will definitely come again.

Lovely people producing high quality meats. It’s difficult to pick a favourite as everything we bought here was delicious. Really well flavoured salamis, prosciutto and coppa and definitely try the black bacon cured in molasses for a really top notch breakfast. Also stocks a small range of good, mostly local preserves, cheeses and eggs.
