Bonghy-Bo in Bath and North East Somerset

Great food, but it was all let down by the AWFUL service. We waited nearly an hour for our food and only received 5/9 dishes, the rest were not made/forgotten about. The person we consulted was extremely unhelpful (man who mainly stayed on the bar) and was very unapologetic and refused to take all the late dishes off of our bill, one we didn’t even receive at all. We might have waited if we had no other booked plans for the day.

Sorry but chicken was rank - rubbery and chewey - not fresh or freshly cooked - reheated me thinks. Rice was stoggy and also reheated I think. Service was good though but won’t be returning

Regardless of whatever assumptions you may have already formed from some of the indifferent reviews that have previously been posted, I can only speak regarding our own visit yesterday and say honestly that my wife and I enjoyed what has to be our best ever Asian dining experience. The atmosphere was relaxing, the food amazing and presented beautifully. The charming lady who attended to us (sorry, I omitted to ask your name!) was genuinely eager to please and happy to help with our many questions regarding the wonderful cuisine. The beer we'd opted for was obviously new to us but perfectly complimented the meal. If you're a fan of Asian food then do yourself a favour and visit this wonderful restaurant. We will definitely be back! Stu and Jill.

Superb lunch at Bonghy Bo, had the roast duck salad which is amazing! Good vegetarian options for my wife too, she loved the dumplings and halloumi cheese salad, will definitely visit again and try other food there :)❤️❤️❤️

I would just strongly recommend not getting the "sharing platter" me and my partner and I thought it would be enough for both of us. The portions were absolutely ridiculous being tiny, and for the cost of £26 it was madness The sides we ordered being salt and pepper chips, were too salty, and they were way better value than the sharing platter again. I don't think I'd visit again

The food arrived on cold dishes, every dish was a massive disappointment. The waiting staff were attentive and helpful but that was the only positive. It was freezing and we and other diners kept our coats on. The waiting staff opened storage cupboards to retrieve stock right next to our table during our meal. The noodles were ‘not as good as a packet noodles’, the vegetable green curry was minute and lacked any vegetables, we had to persuade the chef to serve it with tofu not halloumi! We all ate the food and made the best of it as it was a birthday celebration but we were shocked at the lack of flavour, size, temperature of all the dishes we ordered. Maybe the meat is better we only ordered vegetarian and a fish dish but out of 7 people none of us thought the food was good. In fact it was the worst Thai any of us had ever eaten. When we got home we read the reviews d saw that many people had had the same experience. I would not want others to waste their money on such dreadful food when there are so many great Thai or Asian restaurants to go to in Bath. The one star is for the waitress who did her best. I am sorry for this savage review but it was really an outstandingly bad dining experience.

We had a gorgeous meal on NYE. The service was amazing, all the staff were so friendly and smiley. The food was incredible, the best pork dumplings! Would highly recommend.

A very disappointing dinner, saved by a great waitress. The food was very subpar, we had a lemon dish and I couldn’t quite get over how much lemon juice was in the dish, it was so overpowering. The starters (dumplings) were not up to Aldi/Lidl standard. I feel compelled to write this because I ordered an Asian delivery from a run of the mill takeaway out of town and thought that the quality of that takeaway blew this meal out of the water. The food here is way overpriced for the quality, the flavours were not great and the beer selection is really poor. Also some off the mains were unavailable, but I have not taken that into account of my review. A bit gutted about coming here as Bath has some great restaurant options, we were surprised at how empty this restaurant was on a Friday before Christmas but maybe that’s because the locals know to steer clear. Surprised that the restaurant has so many positive reviews.

The service was good but the portion sizes were very small. We had to order 4 mains and 3 sides to feed 2 adults and a teenager. Every bit of protein was fried, including the Thai green curry chicken - there was also salad leaves in the curry which I didn’t except. Flavours were a tad dull, just fried. I might have high expectations because I lived in Asia for 18 years, but was disappointed by my visit.

Saturday afternoon food. Noodles are the eating size for a child. I could 5 bowls and not be full. Prawns were soggy and not as deep fried as expected. Quite a high price meal that left me unfulfilled, the best part was the beer out of all of this.

Quiet Sunday evening , early dinner Service and atmosphere good 4 dishes with a side of jasmine rice , couple of cokes Salt and Pepper Calamari , Sharing platter (25.50 !) Sweet and Sour Chicken , and Soft Shell Crab Salad Food well presented and tasty but not exceptional . The sharing platter for 2 at £ 25.50 is well overpriced ( see photo) the remaining dishes fairly priced , the food good but not spectacular , but the theme of less is more portion size carried a little far - particularly on the sharing platter . We both thought the sharing platter too small for the hefty price ( see photo) Total bill £85 including £7.95 service ; probably somewhere circa £40-50 more appropriate - obtain mortgage for the sharing platter !

Got a quick lunch here and it was superb. Fast lead time and great taste for the green curry and jasmine rice! If you're walking around Bath, this is a great place to grab a bite of Asian cuisine. The atmosphere is serene and gives a relaxing vibe. Let me know how you find it 😎

Nice food helpful staff. Service was a bit slow today they appeared to be short staffed and are looking for more staff so I think this was just an unfortunate day to go. I highly recommend the chocolate brownie - see pic.

Well... unfortunately it seems all being and no zing. Ordered five spice chicken.mmm. the chicken was fried to within an inch of its life and smothered in sauce to what seemed like to disguise the dreadfully chicken, the staff were lovely and prompt, but the meal didn't go well. The rice was stoggy and unpleasant, I feel there is a need to do away with the fancy plates and concentrate on delivering a beautifully prepared dish. Shame.

I had high hopes for this restaurant given its reputation, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. While the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant, several issues with the food left me disappointed. The first problem arose when we asked our waitress about the soft shell crab dish. She informed us that it consisted of two crabs split into four pieces, which seemed reasonable for the price (around £9). However, when the dish arrived, it contained only one crab. This discrepancy was frustrating, especially since we were given different information. Next, the beef gyudon was disappointing. One piece of the beef was completely raw—not in a way that seemed intentional or appropriate for the dish. While raw beef can be safe, it didn’t belong in this context and felt careless. The Thai green curry, which was advertised as having three levels of spice, lacked any heat whatsoever, even though I have a weak tolerance for spice. Additionally, the curry’s consistency was more like a soup, and the flavors were diluted, making the overall taste feel watered down, the chicken was good though. Though the atmosphere and service were commendable, the food itself was average at best, and these small but significant issues detracted from the experience. I hope this feedback is taken as constructive criticism, as the restaurant has potential but could improve in key areas. I usually avoid writing reviews, but this experience compelled me to share. Hopefully, the restaurant will take this on board without dismissing feedback, as I’ve noticed they tend to respond defensively to other reviews.

Definitely not your average Asian restaurant.. Food was spectacular both visually and in taste.. can highly recommend the sharing platter to start.. the lightest and tastiest of batters was used. I had the Cantonese Duck and my partner had the Japanese Beef dish.. table next to us had Nasi Goreng which looked delicious too.. it was hard to know what to have off the menu to be honest. Will definitely be back to this little food gem.

Came across this restaurant whilst on a few days break away in Bath with my husband. The restaurant was very quiet but the food was gorgeous, service was great. Would definitely go again if we were to visit Bath.

My husband and I came for dinner on a Tuesday evening. To be fair it was very quiet hence the 3* for atmosphere. However, the food was quite delicious. I had spring rolls to start (which were ok) and honey and lemon chicken and noodles (which were nice) and hubby had chicken satay skewers and for mains he had 5 spice chicken and fried rice. All the food was nice. However, the highlight was the recommended carrot cake for dessert. The best we have EVER had! Keep up the good work team!

Popped in very late midweek, food and staff were both great. Was quiet but still had a good atmosphere.

Delightful "afternoon tea" platter of selected asian style foods, the prawn toasts and pork bau were excellent. They have some pretty teapots too to add to the experience.

Disappointing. Dusting the plate with tumeric does not justify serving bland fried rice covered in sweet chilli. The prawn crackers were stale and the not so sunny fried egg on top had a solid dry yolk. The fried chicken on the side was good, nothing special comparable to a typical takeaway. Wouldn't recommend going if you want your food to taste better than it looks.

After reading the positive reviews on here, was happy to go here for the first time trying Thai cuisine with my partner from India. Starters were really nice had the chicken satay and spring rolls, but nothing special. The food here looks fancy and nicely decorated but is average. For main I had the oriental style noodle (pictured) with chicken but was very bland, noodles dry and had little taste. Asked for some extra soy sauce but couldn’t finish it to be honest. Chicken was ok just drizzled a little bit of sweet chilli sauce on but nothing special again, could have made this at home. My partner had the Singapore noodles which also weren’t greatly flavoured and dry. Restaurant was quiet at 6pm on a weekday which wasn’t surprising but with the price of the food (expensive annd disappointing) and the lady who served us was very nice but wouldn’t go here again. First time trying Thai has given us a bad impression. Sorry to say.

The food was amazing, and the wait was definitely worth it. The plating was gorgeous, and each dish was expertly cooked, beautifully presented, and incredibly tasty. The ambiance was fantastic, and the service was attentive and friendly. Every dish was detailed and turned dining into a memorable experience rather than just a meal to fill up. As a vegetarian, I had the Oriental Stir Fry Wok Vegetables with Jasmine Rice, and my friend had the Bonghy Bo Spare Ribs with chips. Both dishes were well-presented and delicious. For dessert, we enjoyed a brownie with ice cream, which was surprisingly delightful and beautifully presented. Thank you for everything.

Delicious food, and the staff were great. A 10% service charge was automatically added to the bill (which I would normally have no problem with) but it turns out this goes to the management - which really angers me. Naturally, I refused to pay this management surcharge.

Really happy to discover this hidden restaurant in Bath city centre, very pretty courtyard garden! Me and my mum had sweetcorn soup and prawn toast for starters, never had such delicious prawn toast, soup’s amazing too 🤤 Mains we tried their Nasi goreng and signature Ribs, both 10/10 👍 At last we shared a Carrot cake which recommended by the very friendly waiter Marley and its the best we ever had! I hate to leave a negative review, but I wish I had paid more attention to the critical reviews of this restaurant. We visited based on positive reviews (which we subsequently found out that the restaurant incentivises customers to leave - against Google’s terms of service), and so I wanted to share our experience as it was hugely disappointing and we felt completely ripped off. We visited in February 2024. We paid £24.95 for the “Bonghy Bo Platter” for two people, and it was the smallest, saddest looking little plate of food. When one imagines a “platter”, priced at £25, one would expect a more generous serving. We were shocked when we were served a very modest plate (side plate sized) containing 10 small items (2 chicken satay, 2 prawn toasts, 2 tempura prawns, 2 vegetable spring rolls and 2 pork dumplings). Each item was small - one mouthful. Whilst the food was pleasant enough, it wasn’t anything exceptional by any means, and the feeling of being ripped off by the ridiculous price for this tiny, mean-sized “platter” left an unpleasant taste in the mouth. After we ordered, we saw a sign on the table offering “free macarons” if you write a Google or TripAdvisor review - but only if show the review to your waiter before you pay. This practice is against Google’s terms of service, for good reason - it’s manipulating people into provide a good review by offering a freebie, because who would write a bad review when they have to show their waiter to get a free macaron? I’ve uploaded a photo of the sign which was on our table. I would probably not have bothered leaving a negative review (we would have just felt it was a rip off and never gone back), but when I saw they did this, I felt the practice is so dishonest and manipulative that I didn’t want others to have the same poor experience we have had. There are many other far better establishments to eat in Bath that are cheaper, with better food, and that don’t manipulate their Google reviews with these practices. I would really encourage the restaurant management to make customers happy through improving what they offer - then they wouldn’t need to induce their customers into leaving positive reviews, as they will do this of their own accord. The positive I would say is the waiting staff were friendly, no problems there.

My friend and I had lunch at Bonghy Bo in Bath this weekend where we both enjoyed the chicken Caesar salad and duck salad. Both were absolutely delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive making sure their guests inside and outside were well looked after. We were especially impressed by this restaurants hospitality and wonderful quality of food. Thank you guys, we had a lovely service. 10/10

Very average food, quite poor service and very expensive, e.g. the mains were £13-18 but didn't come with rice or salad or chips as you'd expect, so we had to buy additional £5-6 sides with everything. Incredibly slow service. Nice atmosphere but there are plenty of places in Bath which have that so why not go to them instead.

Good selection of veggies and staff very accommodating. Portions on the small side especially starters. But great experience would return.
