Been going to the Clifton for over ten years, not staying but dining, drinks etc, spent an absolute fortune, always been friendly and great place, since it’s been took over what a change, we were here last year, only managed to get in once, place was dead, but staff say they only serving residents, now we we spend a few hingmdred pound a time and the place is dead, what’s going on, staff rude , I hope the new owners see this review as we normally here in cromer 6 weeks or more a year, used to eat every day in here but never again will I return, been turned away, rudely too many times, good luck but I bet this place has lost a fortune, keep clear of the place head into cromer, much friendlier now

As a former senior manager for a hotel chain I am well placed to make objective comments. Whereas the Cliftonville used to be a warm friendly environment it has been replaced by a cold, uninviting layout. Totally lacking in atmosphere and what was once a haven of good food is now a shadow of its former self. Our food was slow on service, served on cold plates, and minimal in size. One has to question the calibre of management and the overall awareness of the owning company who clearly do not have a good understanding of customers needs. Like all the other numerous negative reviews I suspect this one will meet with the useful ineffective platitudes and excuses instead of facing up to the reality by actually doing something to resolve what is clearly an ongoing pattern of negativity and failure. Coming from a hotel chain where customer service was paramount it saddens me to witness avoidable failure We will not be back as there are other nearby venues that far exceed the drops that is the Cliftonville. It really saddens me to have to comment like this yet reality has to be faced

The Cliftonville Hotel is undergoing a refurbishment and so the Bistro was sharing accommodation with the bar. A good menu of sea food and other choices. Food looked good on the plates and was good sized portions, more importantly, it tasted good. The main drawback for the evening was a staff member who appeared to be in charge was very loud and over the top with his manner of speech.

Went for a light bite at midday. Lovely seat for two in a window alcove. Having been a month ago and enjoyed good service, an appealing menu and food which all of our then party of six were impressed with, our expectations were for a treat. Today's service was unhurried, but pleasant. Menu, more modest: no starters appealed, and although brown/white bread was initially offered for sandwiches this was changed to soda bread or wrap. My wife asked for her soda bread to be toasted - she didn't say anything, but she left several charred bits. She found the salad leaves "tired" with some wilting and pointed out to the waitress a piece that was slimy and brown [resembling a slug]. We were assured that this would be mentioned to the chef. Sadly, the kitchen chose not to respond. Thankfully desserts were of a high standard. I regularly eat with a friend also from the locality. Yesterday we decided to widen our horizons from our near Aylsham venue. Bolton's was mentioned; however, I shall email him to, reluctantly, delete it from the list.

Came here on a chilly night in January. The restaurant was cosy and quiet and service was friendly but slow. The trout was generous and tasty, but the "burger" was gruesome! Not sure what else was in it besides beef but it was mainly processed meat and very salty! Avoid! Come on Bolton you can do much better than this...

Lovely meal at the Bistro, huge cod, chips and mushy peas for hubby, I had chicken, spinach and chorizo linguine with blue cheese sauce. It was delicious but the sauce was very runny, so but difficult to eat, but tasted great. Hubby had really good salted caramel popcorn sundae and I had cranberry and orange bakewell tart which was good too. Nice ambiance too.

Having eaten here many times over the years, most recently only a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately I am compelled to now write a negative review. Booked a table for 7 to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday for the August Bank Holiday Sat night. Received a call the day before cancelling the booking, as the restaurant was shut due to staff testing positive for Covid (though no apology was given). After attending an amazing Cromer Pier show, we were unable to get a meal anywhere as everywhere (understandably due to the time of year) was fully booked. It was therefore surprising to walk past a seemingly full restaurant on the way home and I felt compelled to enter the premises to query the rationale for the cancellation. Suffice it to say, the receptionist knew nothing of the supposed !Hotel Covid outbreak’ and the ‘Manager’ could not have been less helpful. The outcome of the discussion was that ‘residents’ take priority, despite any prior bookings made, therefore bookings were cancelled to accommodate and prioritise such guests above ‘non residents’! I would never now book this restaurant again and would strongly recommend The Red Lion or Lily Mai in Cromer, Sammy’s in East Runton, or Rocky Bottoms in West Runton (all of which are excellent) above this joke of a place.

We read up on Cromer and had hoped for fresh seafood and ingredients. The burgers were ok, salad and deserts too but the crab was disappointing. May be fresh crab was too much to expect but I thought I might get this. Not so. It all looked ok, but no freshness to the fish/ crabs.

Went for a meal here 10 days ago, and truly excellent it was. A superb steak and an equally great seabass were both cooked, and presented, superbly. No long waits coupled with polite, friendly and very professional service made the whole visit a wonderful experience. What a lovely place. Shown to our table by a waitress wearing her mask. All cutlery, glasses, salt etc etc wrapped in sealed plastic bags so sterile. Lovely friendly waiting staff, the right side of chatty. The food was amazing. The steak highly recommended as is the crab. The choc pot should be essential! If I'm searching for a negative, all I can find is that we were told there was no more seabass (we had a late booking so that was no issue) but then half an hour later the next table got the "last 2 seabass). It did look delicious too :-) The cost was less than I expected. 4 main meals, 1 pudding and 7 alcoholic drinks came to £120. Having paid £107 the night before at Sammy's bar & grill for a terrible experience, I think this was amazing. A really lovely experience in all ways. Thank you!

Came to Cromer and decided to visit Boltons Bistro as have not visited for about 10 years What a disappointment! Covid lines and signs very muddled and in some places not visible. This needs addressing ASAP with some serious management lead. You must give your clients confidence. It happened to be a Monday so we were given Eat Out to Help Out rates – or so we thought! The fact we were overcharged is not the main problem, it was the fact the bar staff did not seem to care or have any idea of how the scheme works when we queried our bill. It was a sort of ‘I don’t know love’ approach. It is a simple scheme so would suggest all staff are trained on what it is! Also the excuse that the computer was not flagged as a 50% option against our menu choice was odd as it is to be taken off all food and surely we could not have been the first fish to be served that day. All very ‘fishy!’The food was OK, a little bland and could have been hotter. It is not cheap! The whole place needs a really good shakeup. We will not visit again for another 10 years - there are far better options.

We have been here before, last year. And the service then was awful! Booked a table and waited for an hour. But the food was SO good we decided to give it another try. We brought our nephew with us, 11, and was seated at our table. The lady that served us, looks like a manager, doesn’t look like she knows how to smile!! It was difficult trying to find something on the menu for my nephew, and presumed if there was a children’s menu it would have been offered. Because clearly, he is a child. We ordered our food and started to wait.A table next to us has children, and were given kids menus!!! I was so annoyed. So I called the happy lady back and asked to cancel the pie and requested the children’s menu. Why on earth this wasn’t offered to us in the first place is beyond belief. Once we had confirmed our order we waiting for our starter. This arrived and as usual was beautiful! We sat and waiting around 30 mins for our mains, with our starter plates in front of us. Staff walked past our table numerous times, and could have took them. We also had to ask someone to bring a drink we’d been waiting for, for a long time. Mains came, we both had lobster and it was beautiful, nephew enjoyed his meal too. I just wish the staff were a lot nicer to deal with, it isn’t the first time we have felt this way. And I don’t think we will be returning, because of this reason.

Came to cromer for the day and decided to try out boltons bistro after reading reviews as havent visited in about 12 years or so. Safely to say the food has advanced and I was pleasantly surprised. Service was a different story, I didnt see much of any management but the staff all looked run down and overworked. There was a young lad on who served us, looked scruffy and didnt act like he wanted to be there, seemed in a hurry all the time so didnt have time to talk. Never saw any tables sanitised when I was in the restaurant. The older guy behind the bar was very chatty and pleasant but again had his hands full as was on his own and he makes a lovely coffee and what I needed after a long day. I was expecting soft and tender lobster as it is the most tender meat of all kinds, but unfortunately my lobster was chewy, rubbery and tough. My husband's crab was decent but soaked in sauce which has gotten everywhere. Both our salad bowls were placed directly in the sauce which was on platters, in other words: messy. Service was nice but slow. I would rather go for small local seafood outlets next time.

We had a wonderful time at this most welcoming of restaurants. When booking online I’d left a message saying it was our anniversary, so was pleased to be seated in a window seat, decorated with balloons. The food was exceptional, with the Scallops starter a definite highlight. The Baked Crab main with garlic butter was first class. The Asparagus was cooked to perfection and our other main, Salmon Fillet was also well cooked and presented. our Son’s Fish & Chips were a 5/5, A’s was his Eaton Mess Sunday. A wonderful experience finished off with a selection of 5 Cheeses, and a glass of Port. Pricing was quite reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and all those attending our table were pleasant, with a good understand of the menu. The Sancerre was served very cold, which is perfect for the appreciation of the crisp taste of the premium wine. All in all a wonderful experience. The fact that my Mother-in-Law called and paid for some Pink Champagne to be delivered with our desert, just went to show that this establishment take pride in delivering a great experience, which we can certainly endorse. Well done to all concerned. Thank you.

On the ground floor of The Cliftonville Hotel there is no trace of Victorian style in here, where it has been nicely modernised and recently refurbished. Simple modern bistro style, with a very British menu, it works well in a town which has seen far better days and it has a sea view of sorts. The food was really well prepared and the service, by the General Manager on the day, was great. Would return any time.

We had a lovely meal at Bolton’s, usually they do Crab Thermidor but unfortunately it wasn’t on the menu (maybe out of season) however I picked instead the white onion soup which was probably one f the nicest soups I’ve ever had! This was then followed by a beautifully cooked piece of halibut. The service was attentive and wine good. Definitely remains a favourite when visiting Cromer.

Visited here recently, nice atmosphere, not overly warm inside, but not many diners in. why have they got rid of the big open fire in the bar area? Food was nice and tasty and hot, service was good, we will return

What a cracking lunch,my wife had baked sea bass, but I had their fantastic burger. Was it good,no it was wonderful, and came with a bacon and grilled cheese topping. The portion was so large,I sadly had to ignore the beautifully soft bun,and the garnish. The chips were to die for,and we both had to say no to a dessert.Service excellent, prices good, and we had a very pleasant corner table. Will be back for Mother’s Day,such good value in a great traditional hotel.

This was our third visit to Bolton's as we absolutely love it here. The food is wonderful with delightful, professional staff. The service and surroundings are a cut above and you can't help feel a little bit special whilst there as you can take your after dinner drinks and relax on one of the lovely comfortable sofas and enjoy your surroundings. You are made to feel so welcome and even though this always feels so special everyone is down to earth and so friendly. Whenever we visit Cromer we ensure we have an evening here.

Tasty and fresh mussels in a very nice sauce...not so impressed with the chips, especially with the local competition at fish & chip restaurants/takeaways...but i didn’t come here for the chips. The mussels were spot on!

We were a walk in and we were treated so well. I had a lovely kir royal cocktail to start and we went straight for mains. I had garlic swordfish with prawns and my partner had a crab thermidor, both of which were delicious. What I really liked was that the menu was labelled as gluten free - as a coeliac this makes eating out so much nicer and makes me feel more relaxed - thank you! Lovely service and great puddings too!

It was the first time we had dined here bing introduced to the place by some friends. We were very impressed by the restaurant. There was a lot of choice. The food was excellent, the service was very friendly. Not too expensive. Ambience great. Overall we were impressed by the hotel in general which was very busy being New Year’s Day but you couldn’t fault how quick the staff were. Would go again.

The quality of the food served is excellent. I had the dressed Cromer crab for my main course and it was beautifully presented and extremely tasty. The restaurant is smart, the waiting staff are very friendly but professional. It is very good value for money too (we paid about £25 each for two courses plus a drink). Shame about the plastic lobster outside and the tatty looking sign which really do not sell the quality of what is found inside.

My wife was perturbed to find crab shell in her starter and a fish bone in her main course "fish fillet". Staff were completely indifferent when she commented about this. My food was OK but not special. Overall feeling that the staff couldn't be bothered so I left without leaving a tip which is the first time that I have done that in my life.

The Good - the fish and chips were lovely, when you eventually get them (see The Bad). The Bad - their food is made on order, so not like a conventional fish and chip shop where the food is pretty much already made and the service is fast. I was in the queue for probably 3 quarters of an hour (no exaggeration). As soon as you’re inside the shop, you’re asked what you want, which gives you a false sense of optimism. It just means your food is made on order though. Meanwhile, all the customers in front of you, once they start being served at the till, take about 10 minutes each. There is only one person serving and two people cooking. I understand why they’re doing this - it’s to increase their margin and avoid wastage. But all that comes at a cost to the customer who suffers awful service. Maybe think about having two people on service and see your reviews regularly scoring 5.

We visited Stevenson’s Fish Bar in Sheringham after hearing it was one of the top-rated places for chips in the area, and while it mostly lived up to its reputation, there were a few bumps in the experience. To start, the shop is quite small, which can make it feel cramped on busy days, especially when you’re waiting for an order. Though the staff behind the counter were friendly and welcoming, we did have an unusually long wait. Unfortunately, it turned out our order had been overlooked, so several people who arrived after us received their food first. It wasn’t until we flagged this up that they realized the mistake. A simple ticket system could make this process smoother and help avoid any future mix-ups. Once our chips arrived, they were served piping hot, which was a big plus. The chips were well-cooked, with a satisfying crunch on the outside and fluffiness inside. Portion sizes were just right—not too skimpy and not overwhelmingly large. Overall, Stevenson’s Fish Bar offers a good product with a warm, friendly atmosphere, but a bit of improvement on the ordering system could make the experience more enjoyable.

Our second lunch before the end of pier show matinee & once again it was great. Most of the tables have a sea view. The service was attentive & both our starters & mains were great With some wine, one dessert & coffees the bill came to around £100 which these days is good value. Better value & better quality cooking than the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe. Allow a couple of hours for lunch and it sets you up well for the 2:30 matinee performance on the pier.
