I'm a real fan of The Bolney Stage, I've been visiting for over 30 years. But the fish and chips I had last night was just not good enough at any price, let alone £17.45. The fish was undercooked, so much so that halfway through, having discovered that the thickest part of the fillet was barely warm and the batter uncooked beneath the crust, I had to send it back for a re-fry. Presentation of the dish was none too clever either, with a broad pool of rather runny mushy peas, and a wide scattering of chips. The other two diners were happier with their meals, but neither said the food was excellent. I'll go again, but I'll be expecting better next time.

Menu sounds tasty but the food execution is poor. We ordered soup which was ok but it came with microwaved roll pretending to be freshly baked. My flatbread with slow cooked lamb was like a brick. I literally couldn’t slice it or bite it. Parmesan truffle fries were cold and dry with not even melted Parmesan. Service was nice though.

Hadn't been to Bolney Stage in a long while. We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary with my sister in law. We found the restaurant cozy and comfortable with warm atmosphere. THE FOOD.... absolutely superb with beautiful presentations 👌 👏. We haven't stopped talking about it, so we will definitely be back. Great service from the staff 👏

Beautiful countryside pub...varied menu Staff were not overly attentive, we were left standing at the bar for quite some time on arrival. Table service to start was great. Food came out and the difference between two plates of fish and chips was ...well let's just say I felt cheated ! ..mine was non existent dry fish and hard batter ... such a shame really not sure why it even came out of the kitchen. The other plate was actually lovely (so I'm told.) Other meals included pork rib eye with potatoes and cabbage which were also dry. When waitress asked if everything was ok we said no not really and the response was simply oh I'm sorry. This was my second time at this pub but will not return after tonight. (Not for food anyway) Might stop for drink as the garden is lovely ! It was a birthday celebration also. Left feeling upset

Read the previous reviews regarding customer service and totally agree - very poor service and very rude bar staff with bad attitude, left us waiting a good 5 minutes with no acknowledgement at all then proceeding to serve someone else, no apology and accusing us of being rude, not sure what the management are thinking here, will not return and do not recommend.

Absolutely wonderful place with plenty of outdoor space and beautiful surroundings. We were sat outside in the sunshine and were treated by the lovely Katherina and a girl called Cary(?) to some outstanding service. Food was delivered promptly and was delicious. Top selection of beers and a very broad menu. Heaven in Sussex!

What a great place. We visited on a Tuesday lunchtime and the pub was full. One of our party can only eat gluten free food and there is a wide selection. The food we ordered was well presented, served on hot plates and we had generous portions. We were brilliantly assisted and entertained by Posh Bob. Enjoy your holiday in France. It's hard to believe that we were deciding about Christmas in August, but we have booked to return in December as the pub is already getting booked up. Not a surprise when the welcome and food is as good as this.

Exceptional, delicious and faultless - and it also knocked spots off a nearby 5 star hotel’s afternoon tea! From the homemade sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls, scones and cakes, to the friendly staff who could not do enough to look after you, it was faultless. The service was outstanding and the food could not have been better. Highly recommend!

We popped in for a spot of lunch and were told no tables available in restaurant, we could have a table in the bar. There were in fact lots of empty tables in the restaurant but for some reason not available to us !! We felt like walking then! but persisted we had fish and chips and the roast lamb both very expensive no starters no desert not sure if wallet could take it. We count not fault the food very good well cooked disappointing mint sauce though but £27 for four small slices of lamb !!

Our second trip to the Bolney Stage, this time for a Monday lunchtime (and it was busy). A warm welcome from staff and all super efficient finding a table (we hadn't booked). Good range of draught beers. Food options were a good range to please everyone, and one starter in particular Muhammara is worth a mention/recommendation. Mains were all enjoyable, service was friendly and helpful. Plenty of lighter options too for those with less appetite. Parking also easy in a large car park.

We walked from Ansty to Bolney and decided to stop for a drink and food. The restaurant was fully booked as it was a bank holiday but there are lots of tables outside and some are covered or heated which was perfect. We booked late and were grateful they made room for six of us. The menu online was the same one, which I was really pleased about as I’d set my heart on a particular dish. The place was very very busy, and there is not much room at the bar or to sit in the bar and it was very cold and wet outside. We probably would’ve had a drink or two before dinner if there had been more room. However, the food was absolutely delicious so it really didn’t matter. I had sticky chilli beef with cashews, and the Goan King Prawn Curry. This tasted incredible and very fresh. I like spicy food, and could’ve had more spice, but I appreciate that others do not and it was still full of flavour with plenty of prawns. I didn’t have room for dessert unfortunately so will have to return! We were pleasantly surprised when the bill came, and the busy pub didn’t affect waiting times or quality of food.

Visited a few times recently and always a great atmosphere and even better food. The staff are so helpful, nothing is too much to ask! I'd highly recommend the pork or beef from the starters, and the burger from the mains. Truffle fries on the side are also a winner, and the waffle to finish. A special mention to Carys who suggested most of the above - thank you!

8th February - The food was amazing. Great service in the restaurant. We had an early dinner at 5pm. I asked the waitress if we could transfer to the bar for drinks. The waitress didn’t advise that there was no seating available. There are only a few tables to sit where you can order a drink. There were lots of empty set tables but these were not an option. I asked the waiter where could we sit. The male middle aged waiter ignored me and turned away from to the bar to avoid my query. Extremely rude! I then had to ask another young waitress where could we sit. She said the option was outside under the canopy ( it was a wet stormy evening hardly relaxing end to a lovely dinner). I felt that the Bolney Stage is only interested in dining guests. Once you’ve dined they don’t care about your business. Will not dine here again in the winter…

We absolutely love this place and the food is normally exceptional. Our visit yesterday was only ok but I’d still recommend it as they can’t be perfect every time! The reasons I’ve given it a 3 rather than 5 for this visit is as follows. There were 4 of us, all had roasts...1 lamb, 2 beef and 1 pork. Lamb and pork were great! Beef however, was a very poor piece of meat and half of each meal was left as it was chewy and fatty. But what really marked them done was one of the waitresses, who when asked how long our meals would be as we’d be waiting over an hour, we were told ‘the meals all take an hour so you’ll have to wait like everyone else’!!!! I was gobsmacked!! I couldn’t believe how rude she was!! All the other girls were lovely and super helpful but they all missed out on a tip because of their rude colleague.

We visited The Bonney Stage last night, Saturday 22 May 2021, to celebrate my wife’s 50th Birthday as a group of five, and enjoyed another fabulous meal. My wife is a Coeliac, and this venue has the best gluten free menu we have ever found! Everyone starved themselves prior to the visit as we know the portions are generous. My wife went crazy for the Sweet Potato Malaysian curry, as did my Mother in Law, and I enjoyed the Beer Battered fFish and Chips. My Father in Law loved his Trout Wellington, and my wife’s best friend loved her Ham, Chicken and Leek Pie.. All the ladies had the same dessert, being the Meringue Roulade, and my Mother in Law, who has a sweet tooth, said it was one of the best desserts she has ever tasted! We were all very impressed with the service as well, and our lovely waitress, Jenna, remembered us from previous visits and was very attentive and helpful. This is a great place, that we now tell everyone about, and highly recommend it for great service, awesome food and lovely setting. Thank you for making our evening with you special. We look forward to visiting you again soon!

No welcome drink, slow service to start, cheap crackers with plastic tack inside, average starter followed by a sloppy, tasteless Roast Turkey, no stuffing..had better at the Toby Carvery. Roast Beef ok but no Yorkshire Puds. Desserts poor ice cream melting. Accidentally knocked a glass of wine over which most places would of replaced without charge not here..! Starter- we ordered chicken lover pate - food arrived 35 mins after we ordered considering that these didn’t need cooking. The pate and the chutney were warm and the toast was cold. Seems that it has been sitting in the kitchen for a while.Wine - ordered sauvignon blanc and rose - both were not cold enough that we had to ask for ice.Main meal -butternut squash with tortellini was bad. Taste of cornstarch! The sea bass had a good crunchy skin and well cooked but salty. The rest of the mashed pea and sides just didn’t quite go together at all. Supersweet and super salty altogether. So disappointed with the whole experience. The first time we went there for light lunch, we waited for a while but the food was great. Not sure whether to come back or not as it is a gamble,Not worth what we paid for that evening.

Food was borderline inedible. My turkey with all the trimmings looked very disappointing from the get go. I couldn’t eat the pig in blanket as it was completely raw. Some of the turkey was okay but another slice resembled roast beef. There was another white substance on the plate that I think was stuffing.... It was horrible. The roast potatoes were stone cold and the red cabbage was overwhelming with cinnamon. My partner ordered steak medium which turned up blue. Just overall a really horrible meal and won’t be returning.

So, we enjoyed a lovely weekend at South Lodge, and on our way home, we decided to stop for lunch at the Bolney Stage, a fabulous 500 year old Sussex pub, close to the Bolney winery. I was particularly attracted by the fact that they offered a full gluten-free menu, as I am gluten intolerant (coeliac). We had booked and made this clear in our booking. The pub is a wonderful space, inside and out. Service was friendly, but lots of young people, who may not have been very experienced in catering. There was a good system for Covid - one-way systems and sanitiser stations etc. I ordered a GF roast from the GF menu. Oddly, it arrived with a big fat, delicious-looking Yorkshire pudding, which appeared to be exactly the same as the Yorkies on the plates of everyone else, who had not ordered GF dishes. I queried this and was assured by the young server that it was gluten-free. I asked them to check with the chef. The server returned, whisked away the plate apologising that in fact the Yorker was not GF. Very quickly the roast was brought back, sans Yorkie. Now I was suspicious that this was a non-GF roast which had just had the Yorkie removed (the food was covered in gravy). I asked the server again about whether this was definitely gluten-free and could they please check with the chef. They did and returned with reassurances that the meal was undoubtedly GF now. Anyhow, finally reassured, I tucked in. About 10 minutes after I finished most of the roast, I started to experience burbling in my belly - not a good sign. Luckily I was not sitting too far from the loos where I spent the next 10-15 minutes. It may be that this was a one-off with weekend staff who do not know much about food allergies, but this is very important for some of us. A lovely pub, friendly service, food looked lovely and tasted good, but not knowledgable and inept/incompetent in the kitchen, where it really matters. No point if it makes you sick. Better not to entice us with a GF menu unless you really know what you’re doing.

My first disappointing visit to the Bolney Stage after visiting numerous times over the years.Popular pub with a good selection of real ales , varied menu and friendly staff. Unfortunately standards on this visit were poor and it was if they wanted to quickly get us in and out of the pub so they could use the table again. When I booked my table on-line there was no mention that we would have to finish our meal by a certain time. I also received a confirmation e'mail where yet again nothing was mentioned. On arrival we were told that they needed our table by a certain time and from that point on everything was rushed. All our guests enjoyed their meals but mine was the worst I have had since visiting the pub many times in the past. The fries I had with my steak burger were hard and it was if they had been cooked a few hours prior to my visit. Not sure who checked the quality of my meal before it left the kitchen. I did mention this to the waitress but there was little response as yet again they seemed more interested in serving people quickly so further people could have our table. In addition since our previous visit COVID safety standards also had lapsed. Visitors were not following the markings for exit routes and the toilets and on this occasion no staff were wearing masks when walking around the pub.Overall a disappointing experience but a big difference in standards from previous visits.

Our parents wanted to treat us as a thank you, as they had been here before and enjoyed their meal on that occasion they booked it again. The restaurant was busy but we felt safe with the measures that had been taken. The first issue was the drink order, a lime and soda and lime and lemonade were part of the order, two lime and lemonades were served. We advised our server and she brought out extra lime; when we told her that the drink was incorrect she took it away and brought out the correct order.Next my husband ordered the fried Brie with chutney and walnuts, the walnuts were missing but we let that go. My mother and myself ordered the fried Brie as our main meals, my Mother’s Brie was missing and mine was cold so got sent back. When our meals were served the apricot chutney was missing so I had to find a server from another area of the restaurant and she returned with a pot of chutney and literally threw it on the table saying there you go and walked off.My Father ordered the steak sandwich and the chips were luke warm, by this time we couldn’t be bothered to complain but all agreed we would not be returning. To top it all the lime and lemonade that I had returned had been included on the bill.My parents are in their 80’s and were very upset that a family meal they were looking forward to turned out to be an unpleasant experience.

Superb Sunday evening meal, sitting outside in the garden. Excellent menu with plenty of choices. The crispy roast potatoes were the best I'd had in ages. The chocolate and orange cake was superb too, really good to have vegan dessert options.

I have dreamed of eating here after having to eat my own cooking all through lockdown and now Compass Bus have started the route past again (though only on a Monday and Friday) I was able to fulfil that dream. We both enjoyed the five spice duck leg starter (very filling) then I had beautifully cooked sea bass, while my companion opted for braised shoulder of lamb with new potatoes, swede & greens which he allowed me to sample (mmm, but too filling for my appetite).Greatly impressed by the safety measures in place – separate entrance/exit, hand sanitizer on arriving, visors for the staff, well spaced tables, open windows/doors (hope this necessary ventilation continues on cooler days and the public don’t bleat about it) cleaning of tables and chairs after customers leave etc. The friendliness and efficiency of the staff was appreciated.

What a lovely experience this was yesterday evening! From start to finish everything was perfect. The staff went out of their way to make us feel relaxed when we came in, the food was amazing too. The menu is excellent and varied. A definite plus was when I asked if the Malaysian curry was v hot, the chef sent out a little taster! All the staff are wearing visors and there is hand sanitzer for everyone. Felt totally safe.We loved it and can’t recommend The Bolney Stage highly enough.

Bob the Landlord is the most welcoming man we have encountered in mid Sussex. Attitude and service second to none. Exemplary attitude, checking on us for food and drinks. We will become regulars.

Post Covid- Lots of measures in place, one way system inside , details taken. Staff all wearing visors, when drinks are bought to your table you take them off the tray. Food was delicious, was a bit slow coming out but it was a lovely sunny afternoon and they were busy. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Well done to all at the Bolney stage you made out first family outing since lockdown a real pleasure.

Post-COVID visit for my first meal after lockdown. Service was fantastic, friendly staff, however the food was very bland, no flavours, which seems to echo a few of the reviews on here.

HAd a visit this week and was very happy to see the measures put in. Well above some of the resturants in London. One way system, staff wearing space visors, evidence of cleaning all the time.$ of us had a good table and the food wa sbrought and handed over at a distance. Drinks came on a tray and we had to remove from the try.Have to book online so no hassle of having to give details on arrival.Look forward to visiting again.

we were really excited having not eaten out for over 3 months. We have been here before so were happy when we were able to book a table. The Bolney have done well with the one way system and providing hand sanitiser at the door but the food was awful. We had soup and Pate to start these were just ok. We both had Roast Beef for our main, the whole meal was awful, bland, no seasoning, the beef was chewy and tasteless, the roast potatoes were hard, the Yorkshire pudding was dry, there was literally nothing nice on the plate.. There is no excuse for this on the FIRST day of opening, they have had 3 months to prepare I can only imagine complacency is the issue. In these times it will be survival of the fittest, we are unlikely to be back

Thought we would try the Bolney Stage after driving past it one day, so decided to make a reservation for a Tuesday lunchtime. Glad we did as the place was very busy, I think we got the last table. Really good tasty pint of bitter (long man best). Our party had chicken pie with mash (the comment was ‘the best mash ever tasted’), burger and cod both with chips. The burger was excellent. Each one of us really enjoyed lunch and we all plan to revisit. Service was efficient and the host very pleasant. Great English pub / restaurant ambience. Huge car park, lots of outdoor seating for the summer. Just a couple of tips - make a reservation, and request a table that is distant from the coffee making range (the grinder is noisy but fortunately was not used for long on our visit). The last tip is definitely eat there!

The pub consists of the original fifteenth century bar area with open fire with a new extension to the rear. Food was excellent; I had the venison cottage pie along with their mini dessert with a complementary cafetière. Great service and a very good atmosphere. Good range of Sussex ales including Harvey’s and Long Man Brewery. We were able to turn up without having a prior reservation. Dog friendly.

Having visited uni daughter in Brighton, I started homeward bound to Essex when I heard on radio that there was trouble on M25, so I knew I would need a short comfort break. Where better than to pull into Bolney Stage.Warm welcome, friendly locals (who happily looked after my dog for me whilst I spent a penny).Dog even got a couple biscuits whilst I was gone! I’m so pleased I’ve found this lovely pub.Welcoming and dog friendly!

This is the 4th time we have come to The Bolney Stage for Sunday roast and its been so good every time. Today I had the lamb shoulder which was so tender and beautifully cooked followed by one of the best puddings I have had, the Pineapple, coconut sorbet and rum sauce. Perfectly sweet and the flavours just worked.Friendly staff and swift service. Perfect experience! Would recommend.

Visited here for lunch. I was pleased to see a roaring open fire and the place was packed on a Saturday. We had a booking and it looked like you needed one as it was almost full. It’s a nice balance here - busy bar where you can take your dog and plenty of more formal restaurant space. The food was good - had a burger and it was pretty good. Large menu with lots of choice - Several pies, fish and chips etc.

Lunch booked weeks before as this place was recommended by friends for a roasty lunch. So disappointing really. 5 minutes or less after ordering our 7 varied roast lunches were delivered!Resting on top of the non veggie lunches was a feeds at least 4 Yorkshire pudding! Precariously balancing on top!The meats were just sliced and clearly not from a fresh roast. The veggies were warmed up slush. Carrot and Swede mash heated up. Red cabbage heated up and a small amount of green shredded cabbage. No veggies to get your teeth into. The roast potatoes had seen better times. Old and tired and everything clearly had been reheated and it arrived too fastMy husband hates complaining as it was supposed to have been a special family lunch So we came away with such disappointment.I would rather wait and eat fresh food as this lunch was sub standard I'm afraid and we will not be back.

Unlike many other pubs, this one really does tick all the boxes. There was atmosphere in spadefuls from an open fire which could only be refuelled by climbing onto the hearth and into the chimney, a local and his gun dog a wonderful taciturn landlord and service and food of great value. Our waiter was beyond reproach, helpful and polite; our food was served with style and was delicious; our Xmas dinner a great combination of roast turkey and a well cooked vegetables. Finally one of our group is gluten intolerant and was delighted to find the kitchen had made this the norm and was able to provide gluten free food for us all. We will be back soon and not just to find out if the envelopes we were given at the end contain vouchers for discounted meals in the new year.

Went here for lunch today the car park was rammed and there were alot of big parties having christmas meals so I was expecting a long wait. However staff were friendly and helpful and there were some nice little touches like a box of reading glasses on the bar. We still managed to have lunch in an hour which I think is seriously impressive. Highly reccomend

My friends and I booked for lunch at The Bolney Stage to celebrate my 75th birthday. The environment was very comfortable and we loved the ancient wood beams. The service was a bit on the slow side but that said, we did take a while to get ourselves settled, and the place was really busy so we cannot fault the Stage on that score. The food was excellent - well cooked and presented, and ample portions. The staff were very polite and helpful. One of my friends wanted custard with her dessert although it wasn't shown as an option. "No problem", said our waiter, and my friend had her custard. The village of Bolney holds a special place in my memory as it was where my late wife of 44 years spent some of her formative years - her maternal grandparents lived in the village for many years and worked at one of the big houses there. Without a doubt our visit to The Bolney Stage helped to make my birthday a memorable event. I would not hesitate to recommend The Bolney Stage.

We met at the pub for a girls xmas dinner. The staff were really accomodating as we had people coming and going at different times. They were also super dog friendly, including dog biscuits and water bowls brought to the table. The human food was good. Hopefully the menu will change with the seasons. 🤞

We have known and stayed at Ockenden Manor since 1975. Staff are superb. The catering, however, has now moved into the pretentious category with a menu that is specialised, limited in range and depth and wine list which is a tad removed from normality. Ockenden Manor is lovely but no longer a reasonable restaurant experience.
