Saw the best cheese twist in the world in the window. It was the last. I secured it. I ate it. Delicious. Nothing left but crumbs

Given the multitude of choices for food in the Market area you might miss this bakery. But it is a great find and the baked items are interesting and tasty!

Walked passed looking for somewhere to grab breakfast on the go and found this place quite by chance. Hands down the best almond croissants ever! We were lucky to get the last two! Highly recommend checking this place out as they do lots of amazing bread and other sweet / savoury items.

The view the waiter and the tea were so good I really recommend this place for any tea enjoyer. NS: Don't be discouraged by the queue. It's worth it !!

Lovely bakery, have reccomened this to my friends, like any place there can be the odd miss but it's mainly hits here, only one staff member to my knowledge who is the proud baker/owner of these goods. Overall would reccomened

Great choice, friendly staff, good vegan options. Highly recommend. The vegan chocolate and mocha cake was delicious. My friend has a goats cheese and red pepper tart which she said was really good with lots of goats cheese.

Tiny little bakery selling The Best Sourdough I've tasted. Also a tempting selecting of cookies, cakes etc. Obviously baked with care and the best ingredients. Highly recommended.

The cinnamon bun was utterly unctuous. The balanced cinnamon sugar felt like a warm hug on a rainy day in York. I took a bite, brought it up Cliffords Tower, onto a train, into the fridge overnight, then into the oven the next day, and it was still fabulous! If you do heat it up, I recommend covering it so the cinnamon doesnt burn, else it develops a fennel like flavor.

The sourdough bread at this bakery is simply outstanding. Its crust is wonderfully crispy, and the interior has that perfect balance of tanginess and chewiness. As for the savory Danish, it's a delightful treat with a flaky pastry and a savory filling that bursts with pesto flavor. A must-try for bread and pastry lovers!

omg we found your bakery in York two weeks ago and we haven't stopped talking about it since! the savouries and cakes were hands down the best we have tried and our vegan teen approved too! We bought 5 savouries and 5 desserts and the hungry teens appetites were satisfied. everyone needs to try bluebird bakery ❤️ the mckinneys, Warrington.

Savoury Danish deserves all 5 stars. Weighty, delicious had to grab one early as I watched the pile shrink! Would post a pic but I ate it before I thought about it.

Discovered this bakery in the Shambles by chance. So pleased we have as the produce was superb. So many different unique combinations in bread, pastry and cake form. The lady behind the counter was a little reserved at first but I was interested in the different products and she explained the different grains. Purchased pumpernickel rye bread which is so tasty but the highlight was the honey spelt cakes. Great value for amazing products - will definitely be back 👍

Have used this bakery since it opened, bread is superb and always something on the specials to temp you with! Tried a new Italian style sourdough today and it was fantastic, very light with a nice chewy crust😋 Focaccia with sea salt and rosemary is also one not to miss!

Great cafe in Acomb. Lovely spot to meet friends for a coffee and a chat. Super bread and cakes too. I haven’t had lunch here but the sandwiches look equally appealing.

If I could give 5 more stars to this bakery, I would. This is a small, takeaway only shop in one of the Shambles lanes. We got their five spice roll and the spinach chickpea roll — and both were absolutely outstanding even cold! The flavors are so absolutely on point and so delicious that we will be going back tomorrow before our train back to London to pick some more up to take home!

Got a very frosty reception from the woman serving. I went with a close female friend and couldn’t help but feel extremely judged and self conscious. Definitely felt like she wanted rid of us the moment we entered, which is a shame because the pastry was really nice and well priced. Overall a little disappointed

I visited York today for the first time in ages, and I must return soon if only to revisit Bluebird Bakery. I popped in this afternoon for something sweet, and came away with a Honey & Spelt Cake. Sadly I can share no evidence of this with you as it disappeared rather quickly! I cannot recommend them enough - delicious!

I've reviewed Bluebird Bakery several times, but in my last review I mentioned the refusal of cash at their Leeds market stall. I was appalled by the arrogance of the response I received, basically calling me a liar. At the time I wrote that review, a member of staff had even put up a sign saying they did not accept cash, and I have had cash refused MANY times, most recently yesterday, Saturday 18th March 2023. The state of denial by Bluebird's management is an indication to me that they really don't know what is going on in Leeds. Their bread is good, and they produce a good range, but their staffing has always been very variable in Leeds. Currently, they have one really nice guy working there, but when he's not there, it goes downhill. The staff can be downright rude, and you often have to go and find them, as they are sat in the back doing college work or playing on their phones. I was recently kept waiting for 5 minutes, while a member of staff was doing some kind of 'word search' (puzzle book) over the counter, with his girlfriend. Yesterday, I was told to "Come back in 10 minutes", as the person working was doing something else. When I returned the bread I'd wanted had sold out. It's always been like this in Leeds, ever since Bluebird opened in the market, though I don't recall it being as bad as it is now. Who wants to buy their bread from some snotty, ill-mannered student, who treats you like he's doing you a favour taking nearly £5 for a loaf off you? Stop being in denial Bluebird, you have staffing issues in Leeds.

Not impressed, got a ciabatta that just is not a ciabatta. You can't just throw some flour on the top of a white loaf and call it ciabatta. Also I get the feeling that this loaf was more than 24 hours old at the time I bought it. Seriously unimpressed

Fantastic baked goods!! It’s not a sit down cafe or restaurant but definitely go in and get some bread and pastries. The best chocolate croissant I’ve ever had, such flavorful dough. The rosemary and sea salt focaccia is great. They have great pastries you just need to get them before they sell out.

It was truly incredible. Low amount of reviews because it’s not too visible, but the sweets were fresh and amazing. Must try the spelt cake!

Would get my fix from here every day if I could. The breads are lovely and so are the sweet pastries too! This visit I opted for the Earl Grey teacakes. Yum! I may eat all of them but I think my husband might object!

Bought the 7 seeded sourdough bread and it was just the right amount of consistency.

I picked up one of your delicious cinnamon rolls today. So big and hot the spot with my coffee!

I asked if they could take my order outside as I had a dog. Even although they only had a few tables they refused as it was too much trouble. They told me to tie my dog up around the corner. Terrible experience will never return to such a place when an inflexible and rude place.

We're not locals but visit York regularly. Bluebird bakery was recommended to us on previous visit. We walked from centre, 40 minutes, and tied in with visit to Holgate Windmill. This bakery fully met our requirements. Friendly staff, good decor, nice atmosphere and to top that lovely food both savoury and sweet. Highly recommended and well worth a visit.

Loved the city, York 🇬🇧, loved the market place, loved the street location, loved the shop… and really loved 🥰 the food! Freshly made daily. Quaint decor to match the entire setting. A quite varied delicious selections. We enjoyed a tasty unique creation, a tomato 🍅 and olives 🫒 rolled in a seasoned baked pasty. Delish! We engaged in a conversation w the lovely lady running the shop, perhaps the owner. Describing their bake process made this taste even better! 😁

Good quality bread and pastry. No seating area and they don’t have a machine to slice the sourdough.

Bakes and prices are excellent, with a range of sweetness profiles that are suitable for all. Being able to get a drink there as well would perhaps add to the experience but their excellent baking is their cornerstone and a certainly worthy one. I'd definitely recommend the cinnamon roll - easily one to share though as it was similar in size to my head. A delightful little place.

First visit to the Bluebird bakery cafe and I wasn't disappointed excellent coffee and toasted sandwich and my guest had Foccacia which she absolutely loved, we will return.

Got a jalapeno and mushroom focaccia here and it was really soft and flavoursome. Would come back for sure.

Came here to pick up some pastries so was a little disappointed to see that it was mainly breads. Did pick up some hot crossed buns but they lacked any spices in there so it was a bit plan

Such delicious bread! We tried a cheese twist so delicious and flavoursome, a seseme seed flapjack lovely and the caramel shortbread incredible the caramel is absolutely amazing! Lovely little shop aswell!

Absolutely amazing and delicious bread. I cannot get enough of the 7 seeds - sourdough bread, it is definitely my favourite. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. If Carlsberg would do bread, they would ask Bluebird Bakery for the recipe.

Our first visit when visiting the Acomb area . Over an hour before closing time on Saturday the staff were taking away the tables around us so we ended us having our coffee on the pavement as the only table . The order of two coffees came wrong . When I said I’m sorry this isn’t what I ordered the waitress looked down at me and said ‘what’ . One word . No more . We won’t return .

Do not even bother trying anywhere else in york for brownies, this place has the best I’ve ever tried consistently hands down!

Great little bakery near the famous Shambles in York where you will find a fantastic range of breads that might surprise one,, rolls, cakes, savoury pasties plus chocolate brownies etc. It is a quaint bakery shop that is in the ideal place. Friendly staff will explain all if required.

Bought the best date and walnut scones I have ever tasted yesterday from this amazing place to take away. You can really taste the date pieces and walnuts. The texture is amazing. Will certainly buy again on my next visit to York.😊

Hands down the best Belgian chocolate brownie I have ever had in my entire life. Absolute must visit when visiting the city. Beautiful breads are also available. But the brownies are out of this world.

Not all that special average bread .over priced .

I've been buying bread from this bakery for many years now, so when they opened a store in Leeds Kirkgate Market, I shopped there in spite of my dislike of the gentrification of the market. A stall which sells bread at £3 or £4 a loaf is part of that I think. They had a great manager - Shona - in Leeds at one time, but otherwise the service could sometimes be extremely poor. During the first lockdown, me and my neighbours organised bread deliveries from Bluebird, and I returned as a customer when that lockdown ended. They now refuse cash though, which I really think is a cheek in Leeds market, and stops me, and presumably some other customers, shopping with them. I do think Leeds Bread Co-op make better bread, and since I've found that I can now buy it nearby, I'm afraid it's Bye Bye Bluebird, if my cash isn't good enough, I'll go elsewhere.

Popped in for some bread the other day, it was busy but worth the wait. Lots of tasty treats and staff very kind and friendly, recommended the daily special, which were delicious blueberry buns with crumble and icing. Coffee also very nice. Will be back!

A new bakery to the area. Called at the one in town. And Kirkgate market Leeds. Product is good. A lot of sourdough. Even the baguette!! But was fine. Service so poor. Muddled. And the server wore single use vinyl gloves which is not a good idea. The glove is for single use. A lack of understanding and a bit of a hazard. Sure hopefully service will improve. Place seems to want to appeal to the ‘ gentrified “ brigade. Lots of blokes sat with a single coffee plus laptop. Never can understand why home isent quieter and cheaper for their “ work”. Acomb really not so gentrified. Place should be an asset for all Acomb wallahs. Let’s see. Not open Sunday’s. Would probably do a roaring trade then.

The produce of the Bluebird bakery is outstanding - you can tell it is all made from scratch and of fantastic quality. The brownie and caramel slice are absolutely delicious and I can recommend for anyone! Located in York’s beautiful historic “Shambles”, this lovely authentic bakery fits in perfectly.

Really welcoming atmosphere and delicious bakes!

I was disappointed with the Danish pastry as it was too sweet/too much icing for my liking- but a Danish pastry is meant to be sweet so next time I'll just choose something more savory. I left a disproportionately bad review about the sourdough crust not being crusty enough, which it wasn't when I bought it but it crisped up after i'd taken it home and then kept for days... And was extremely light and fluffy inside as well so I must apologise for my earlier grumpy review.

Always pop into here in the morning for freshly cooked homemade bread. Staff are always friendly and attentive. I shouldn't say this but to buy baked goodies you have to go early as the place is soon sold out. Looking forward to my next order....

Cute artisan bakery in a cute part of York that's worth visiting. On the pricey side (it's artisan) but worth it if you want nice bread. Receives 5* for bread. But for pastries etc try Flori bakery (if it's open) or the almond croissant from The Cornish Bakery (both are cheaper options and taste great)

We love coming here for bread!! They do the best (and only place in York that I know) Challah bread! We usually come on a Saturday morning and there’s already a queue before it opens! It’s always a good sign!! Their hot cross buns are delightful as are the sourdough!! A great little independent business!!

Very rude is the tall blonde Lady, huffs and puffs and doesnt like cash payments at all. The bread is also very inconsistent at the moment, EDIT*** TURNED Away for cash payment, 2nd member of staff is also very rude.

Excellent small local bakery with a great selection of breads, cakes and food. All ingredients locally sourced where possible and freshly made. Different speciality breads made on different days, means it is well worth asking what else they do.

I've been living in York for just over 2 years and it's the only place I go to buy bread. Once you've tried it you will not buy a sliced, prepacked loaf again. I haven't tasted better anywhere else. Their pastries and cakes are lovely too.

Wow!! The produce on sale here is amazing. Bought a Bengali roll and a roasted vegetable quiche but wish i would have bought more. The flavours were awesome but get there early as this place is so good it sells out quickly

Me and my husband popped in her on the off chance and it was lovely. We brought lemon cake, brownie, salted caramel brownie and carrot cake.... all amazing. Defo worth going and we WILL be going back 😁

This is a tiny bakery tucked down by the side of the market near the Shambles. The have a really good vegetable focaccia which I always call on for when I’m passing.

If you aren't gluten intolerant per se but (like me) suffer from indigestion when eating supermarket bread, give this shop a try; above all, this is a good place to get healthy and delicious bread that is a pleasure to eat, not just something to put a filling inside. I've been coming here quite a while now, might be over a year. They do various breads, including sourdough which I love and a few different ryes, as well as some nice savoury baked items (my current favourite is a spicy vegetable roll, cannot remember the exact name of it). They have a few different types of 'cake' on the counter as well; the chocalte-topped ginger flapjack is a favourite of mine, but I think just about everything they make is very good so you can't really go wrong. They also have flour and a few different bread proofing baskets in the corner to buy, should you want to try making your own bread at home.

My husband and I were very excited to visit the Shambles in York and did not expect to find an independent bakery here!

Spinach and chickpea roll, tandoori spiced roll, cheese and jalapeno bread, chocolate brownies ... all utterly delicious. Second visit, won't be the last.

I was in York on 9/11 And walked by Bluebird bakery, where there was a sign saying free sourdough starter. Yay! I picked some up from kindly Nicky, finished another week of travel, headed home to the Colorado in the USA where it survived thw plane trio packed in my suitcase, and reactivated it with equal parts flour and water by weight in grams. Unlike the starter I made 1 year ago in our semi-arid climate, it rose over the edge of the jar, and spilled down the sides and over the counter! I am so impressed! First thing I made was light, fluffy, airy biscuits, much to my delight. As I suspected, my homemade sourdough was just not yeasty enough to rise right and everythjng I made was dense and heavy. I am delighted with the lovely sourdough I received in York. Excited to bake bread today!

Every single loaf here is impeccable. Every single cake here is worth trekking a million miles for. You have never met a lovelier, more helpful staff team in the world ever. MUST VISIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

We happened onto this bakery while walking down the Shambles. My husband bought a chocolate brownie and three of us shared it. Then we went back another day and got one each along with salted caramel brownies. They are both fabulous and I really can decide which one I liked best. After the first trip my husband said the chocolate brownies were as good as his grandmothers. I have never heard him say that before!
